We’re back with another update on John’s sister’s little-boy-on-the-way nursery that we’ve been transforming for the past few weeks (see how we painted stripes and hung mirrors here). This week’s project is a custom crib skirt that we easily whipped up on the cheap with fabric that we snagged on sale and without the use of a sewing machine- or even a needle and thread! Here’s how:
Simple, right? We love that all you need is some fabric you heart, a measuring tape, an iron, hem tape and a bit of velcro. And this was actually our first time taking on a project like this, so if we can do it on camera you can totally follow along at home (hopefully with an iron that’s on). John’s favorite part was when I said “you’ll have a ribbon of stick” when I was struggling to describe the iron-on tape. Eh, you win some, you lose some.
And speaking of winning, how great is it that Emily can now shove a ton of stuff under her crib and no one will ever be the wiser? Especially since she thought she couldn’t have a crib skirt in a modern baby-boy nursery for fear that it would look too frilly or traditional for her tastes. Thank goodness for that inky blue geometric fabric! We love that it’s clean and modern yet oh-so-kid-friendly at the same time. Kids like shapes, right? Especially paired with zoo animals.
So that’s the rundown of our crib skirt adventure. Stick around for more DIY nursery undertakings and of course the big reveal. And because we know you appreciate a budget breakdown, we’ll leave you with our total cost for this entire project: $35. And that includes velcro, iron on hem tape, and two yards of high-end-but-on-sale fabric. We probably could have done the whole thing in under $15 but we fell hard for the fancier fabric and didn’t look back. And a custom $35 crib skirt still isn’t bad at all when you consider that this one from Restoration Hardware Baby can run ya $80.
Oh and we even had enough extra fabric leftover to make a pillow for the chair next to the crib so that’s also included in the total (we’re going to use the fabric in reverse for a complementary lighter blue pop of color nearby). Can’t wait. Seriously is it nerdy that this stuff gets us all giddy and hyper? Do any of you guys have a DIY nursery project of your own going on right now? Any buns in the oven out there? Any kid room makeovers in general (from toddler to big boy or tween to teen for example)? Let’s hear it.

Hi there! I love this project. Do you know how many yards did you used for this project? I am woking on my first baby’s nursery and will for sure do this project.just want to make sure I’ll buy enough fabric.
thanks a lot!

Just measure around the perimeter of your crib with a tape measure and see how long each side has to be. Since you can create two ends and one long middle piece it might take around 2 yards, but I’d measure just to be sure. Good luck!

Hi there, I have my fabric and adhesive and I’m ready to go but wanted to clarify some things first..the crib skirt you made for Clara’s room you put all 3 pieces together into one piece using the adhesive. For this skirt is each panel hung separately or are they adhered on the sides too? Also, you left an extra inch on all 4 sides? 3 of them for the adhesive and 1 of them for the velcro? Thank you! This is my first big attempt at something crafty so I’m a bit nervous!

They were all ironed together into one long strip, so it sort of looked like a long strip with seams in each corner. Then I took that long strip and velcro’d it to the top edge of the crib all around it (no velcro was used on the sides, just along that top metal rail as shown in the pics). The extra inch on all sides was for the adhesive (since we hemmed all four sides) and then we just velcro’d the top to that ledge and it seemed to work out well! Perhaps make it an extra inch taller if you’re scared yours will end up too short after the velcro step? You can always velcro it a bit higher if it drags too much at first. Good luck!

Thank you for this! I just couldn’t find a bedskirt in the design I wanted to so I used your tutorial this past weekend and love it! Our baby’s room is now complete…except for the baby who may make her appearance any day now!

Love this! Thank you for such an affordable cute way to make a crib skirt. Was wondering if you have thought of doing something for a changing table? I have one that has the two shelves underneath…and have thought about doing a changing table skirt…didn’t know if you would feature something like that also?
YoungHouseLove says
That’s sweet! We have a changing pad on top of a midcentury dresser, so we didn’t actually buy a changing table, but you could probably make a skirt in a similar way and attach it with heavy duty velcro. Hope it helps!

Love this idea! I like the look of lots of fabric and somewhat bunched on the ground for a soft look – I was going to spend $$ on the crib skirt but after seeing this post I’m going to give this method a shot to save some moola! Thanks for the great idea!! :)

I love this tutorial! I’ve used it as a guide in making two sets of curtains from drop cloths and it makes it so easy! :) http://mrsbomb.com/629/drop-cloth-curtains/

This is amazing! ♥ I don’t sew (I can do little patches here and there) and I don’t know anyone who does, I’m also relatively cheap and can’t justify spending $50+ on a crib skirt especially when there is a chance it might not even fit our crib right so finding this just made my day. On top of that I can go with pretty much any design/fabric I want! :)
Thank you so much for sharing this!

I’m working on a little boy of my own and wanted to make my own crib skirt. However I can’t seem to get this video to load. Is it still on YouTube?
Can’t wait to see what you two come up with for the new nursery!

If you’re on a smart phone it might help to go to a real computer/laptop (sometimes it’s glitchy on a smart phone). This is the direct link to it on vimeo (we don’t believe we have it on youtube.com).
Hope it helps!

I’m standing here with a hot iron and my new fabric ready to follow your roman shade tutorial and the video on how to use hem tape won’t come up…I’ve tried refreshing my page a couple times. Any suggestions? I’m hoping to get them started before my son wakes up from his nap! I’m sure you can relate :) thanks in advance! LOVE all your tutorials and your site! I don’t go a day without checking in!!

I see your comment above about the video…didn’t catch it before. I’ll try that link! I’m using my phone. Our computer is down at the moment.
