Well, our new washer and dryer have arrived! And we promised to share how the installation went, what we did with the floors under them, and how we like them so far (that’s where things really get interesting). We realized a few days ago that we’ve had a whole bunch of different laundry situations. In our first house we had front loaders with a counter…
In our second house we had stacked front loaders with cubbies next to them…
… and in this house we’ve had top loaders with cabinetry above them. Here are the new guys sitting pretty (although not quite as pretty as the others since we haven’t tackled the rest of this nook yet).
Honestly, each of these setups have had pros and cons:
- We loved having a counter over our first house’s front loaders, but it usually ended up cluttered with stuff (it became sort of a dump-this-here-until-we-deal-with-it-later zone). And this setup required the most bending, which wasn’t that bad at the time, but now that we’ve had top loaders a while, we definitely can appreciate less of that.
- Our stacked loaders were nice because we had cubbies for storing everything we needed, which didn’t tend to get cluttered like the counter (there just wasn’t space to drop grocery bags, returns, and other random items there). There was still a fair amount of bending and lifting when it came to doing laundry, but again – at the time it was just fine, and we really only realized how nice top loaders were once we moved here.
- The obvious con to top loaders is that there’s no place for a counter, which we did really like having, but we still have the top of the dryer to work with (we can put the laundry basket there for example – or lay things out to air dry). The cabinets might be our favorite storage solution (as compared to open cubbies or pull-up blinds) just because everything is tucked out of view but still really easy-access.
*Note: We got some questions on Friday’s post about why we don’t bring our appliances with us when we move. It seems to be one of those regional things. Here people tend to leave them, but it’s not like you leave nice ones without getting anything in return for them – it’s just factored into the listing price here (a seller can command a higher asking price by saying “there are new top of the line appliances” which obviously add a lot of appeal/value).
But now onto our new washer and dryer! When it came to delivery, the guys were really nice, although I did realize about half-way through it that I needed to lay down a dropcloth to protect the runner, even though they wore those nice little shoe-booties (the runner was getting dripped on by the old appliances as they came down – but it was thankfully nothing I couldn’t just wipe down to remove). With the booties/dropcloth combo it looks like a slip-n-slide situation (I begged them to take off their booties because I was afraid they’d fall) but thankfully they went slow and steady and all was fine. Turns out I’m just a worry wart.
You might remember that we couldn’t wait to get the old appliances up and out of there so we could finally replace the old pan under the washer and remove the remaining carpet scraps that were sitting under the dryer.
We decided that laying down some thick 3/4″ plywood (which is the same depth as our hardwoods) would be a nice way to give that particle-board subflooring a more finished look – especially since we could stain it to match the floors so well (we used one coat of Dark Walnut followed by three coats of SafeCoat Acrylacq to seal them). We actually added plywood under our last washer and dryer (more on that here) since we heard it was easier on them to have reinforced flooring (something about them lasting longer) so we’re hoping it gives these a leg-up.
As soon as the guys carried our old appliances downstairs we ran up into the laundry nook for a quick floor presto-change-o, which we did in a blind panic because we knew it would only take them a few minutes to get the old ones downstairs and the new ones upstairs. First we had to remove the old carpeting, which was more secure than we expected (John actually had to scrape up the staples in a mad-dash after we yanked up the carpet and underlayment). Look at him go:
Then we had to get the boards down. Here’s the first one going in. We had pre-measured them and stained/sealed them beforehand so they were all ready to slide into place when the appliances came up.
The second one went right in after the first, but there’s still a small gap that we have to fill where the molding jutted out too far for us to get a flush result. We hope it’ll look nice and complete once we slide that missing piece in (we’re just going to cut one more slice of plywood and stain it to match). Wish we had time to prime and paint that blue trim hiding in the nook while the old washers were out, but it might have to wait for a rainy day…
When you step a little further back, you can hardly tell it’s not the same hardwood flooring running under those appliances (we didn’t photoshop the crack out of this pic, it’s just barely noticeable from this distance). And we’re really happy with how well the color matches. We also plan to add some nice white folding doors (there were some blue ones hanging there originally) so that’s another reason we thought the subtle flooring change should work really well.
As for leak protection, since these guys are on the second floor (and we REALLY REALLY don’t want them to cause damage to anything below them, we were sure to place the washer in a plastic water-catching basin and also upgraded to those nicer reinforced steel water lines instead of the plastic ones.
The crazy thing is that during installation there was actually a small leak where it was attached to our water line, but we caught it while the installer was still here, and he ducked back there and fixed it by tightening things a little. The lesson? Check those lines!
So now onto the fun stuff: how we like our new washer and dryer! Well, we LOVE the dryer so far. It has been quieter, has a much larger capacity, doesn’t shrink things nearly as much as our older one did (that one practically “burned” things and this one has a heat sensor so it doesn’t over-dry). I also love the charming little chime sound it makes when it’s done (which can still be silenced, but it’s so much better than the loud buzz that our old one made).
We also really like the digital setup of the washer and the dryer. It’s easy to see things, like how long each cycle still has left.
The washer’s capacity is also really awesome. It fits a lot more than any of our previous models (especially the old one we were replacing).
And now for the womp-womp. Remember how I worried that bad things happen in threes? Well, our new washer is broken. I’ll pause for effect, as I quietly weep into my dirty laundry pile. The installation just included starting it to make sure there were no leaks when it filled up, but they didn’t stay to watch it run a full cycle (which is completely understandable… that would be close to an hour of washer-watching time).
So imagine our surprise when we ran our first real load of laundry well after they had pulled out of our driveway and heard a crazy-loud grinding sound during the wash cycle (whenever the agitator is moving, there’s this jarring metal-against-metal sound). You can hear it all the way from downstairs with the TV or radio blaring.
I woefully called Home Depot to tell them we already had a problem and they told us to call Maytag, who told us they could get a tech out in seven days. Ack! A full week without a working washer after buying a new one and expecting it to run without issue? I sweetly asked if they could get that service call moved up a bit since we were expecting a working machine upon delivery (our laundry had built-up a bunch already, so the prospect of another seven days of waiting stunk) and they said we could call Home Depot and see if they could do anything. I explained that I called them first, but would try one more time.
Well, when HD heard it was going to be a week until Maytag could make a service call (which might not even fix things, it might just diagnose that I needed a new machine, which then had to be ordered) – I could feel them trying to work something out for me, which I really appreciated. They had mercy on my sweet laundry-missing soul and agreed to take back the first one and deliver a new one on Thursday.
I’m really happy with Home Depot’s customer service (I’m sure it’s a lot easier for them to just say “call Maytag, it’s a mechanical issue that they’re supposed to handle) and I have to be honest that I wish Maytag had been able to come out for a service call within 48 hours or so, which is what I expected when my brain reached that “oh snap, our brand new washer is broken” moment.
So that’s where we are. Still sleepless in Seattle washerless in Richmond, but we love our dryer and the new flooring under it. And here’s hoping that by Thursday I’ll be whistling while I work that new washer. I’ve never looked forward to doing laundry this much in my life! Have you guys had any unexpected delivery or new-appliance issues? We’re happier than ever that ours have a one-year warranty given this little curve-ball, but we hope this third house snafu means we have all of our bad luck out of the way for a while…

Sidenote: We’d love to see you guys this weekend at the Richmond Home & Garden Show! We’re speaking at 2pm on Saturday and Sunday (with a book signing following Saturday’s talk). You can get half-price tickets online right here. Oh and they gave us the shock of our life when we were driving down the highway and saw our giant faces on a billboard.
Seriously, we screamed so loud it probably scared other drivers. It’s exciting, unbelievable, and terrifying to see your own mug that big.

Totally awesome billboard! I am very impressed you got that flooring down in such speed! As for HD, we’ve always had good luck with their customer service too. Good luck Thursday!

The same thing happened when we got a new washer! There was something wrong with the motherboard and the water wasn’t heating up, no matter how many times we switched the hot and cold inputs. Luckily, we could just do all of our on cold. Glad they were able to push up the date for you!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh man, that’s lucky you could still use it on cold!

Ironically, I thought the new washer sounded a lot like a washBOARD, as in old-timey jug band, “you play the banjo, I’ll play the spoons.” Or maybe I’m just really in touch with my hillbilly roots this morning. ;)
And I suppose it would be funny to suddenly see your face along the highway (I mean, unless you sell auto insurance or anchor the news)… but have a Happy Home & Garden Show, y’all! Congrats!

We installed a new washer at my MIL’s once and didn’t read all the instructions and yes we hadn’t removed the transportation screws and it was an easy fix.

I had seen in some of the reviews for this machine that people had this issue, got a little worried about how reliable all of the 5-star reviews were. Sounds like it is a common, known problem and everyone has been able to get a repair/replacement with little issue.

We have the same washer/dryer combo and we had a problem with the dryer the very first day (it wouldn’t dry!!) Also called HD and then Maytag and they had to send 2 different people out to fix it. I was not a happy laundry doer, but since then its been fine and we love them. Happy Laundry doing!
Paige @ Little Nostalgia says
Gaaaah! I would have FREAKED out. And I’m surprised that Maytag said it would be a week to get somebody out there to look at your brand new item. That’s… really lame. Good thing The Depot knew what’s up. :-)

Hope you get a working washer soon!
We’ve had different laundry set ups over the years too, but one thing I can’t live without is an area to hang up clothes as they come out of the dryer. I would totally add a rod in your nook to the right of your cabinets with a shelf above for extra storage. Do you already have plans for that space?
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yeah, someday we’ll tackle this nook! Just doing things like the nursery right now, so because the washer purchase sort of snuck up on us, the rest of this space’s update is down the line a bit.

Oh, what a bummer new appliance mishaps are: when we moved into our house we had a new washer, dryer and range delivered on the same day. The delivery guys did not make the gas connections (totally understandable) so I left them scooched out from the wall until my hubby came home to help finish that up…well, the new range was about 1 inch wider than the lip left from the built-in that it replaced, so that was a no go until we busted out the side cabinet, retiled the floor and re-installed the cabinet to give it room. The water line to the washer cracked, and the dryer vent had some crazy problem too! I was 0 for 3! I sat in my house (with a new baby) and cried because I could not do any laundry or cooking (no microwave) in this house. All of the issues were soon remedied, but man that was a big disaster. I have since declared that I love my appliances most of anything we have ever bought for the house!

I responded to you last week telling you how much I love my washer just like your new one. When we had our new washer installed also in a laundry pan to protect our floors our first load was also had a very loud grinding….we called the appliance store and the next day they came and listened. The problem was the weight in the tub from the wet clothes pushed the laundry tub down and it was rubbing on the plastic laundry pan.We raised the hight of the washer by adjusting the legs and the grinding sound gone!!!!So the tub was now not touching the pan.I hope this helps.

That looks awesome! So when we bought our new appliances and I went to do my first load in my brand new washer the same thing happened. It was shaking so bad and jumping all over the floor. When I called to find out why my brand new washer was not working the sales guy asked if we took out the bolts that manufactures installs to hold the tub in place during moving. No we didn’t and had no idea that we had to. A few minutes later my husband removed these huge screws from the back of the machine and I was back to washing laundry. Could this be your issue?
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks for the bolt tips guys! We double (and triple checked) and everything they should have removed has been removed, so it’s some issue with the agitator when it’s on the wash cycle.

Could the shipping rod still be in place in your washer? I read about it recently in the reviews of new washers at Home Depot’s site. This isn’t the same brand/machine as yours but maybe your machine has one, too? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HB2fd0BWfRo

We just got a new washer and dryer (the other Maytag model you guys were looking at) and when the guys from Lowe’s came to deliver it, the dryer wouldn’t fit through any of the doors to the basement! They told me I’d have to order a new one without the steam function since none with it would fit through our doors.
After a minute of sad face and thinking about the solutions, I took out a crow bar and mallet to remove the door and door frame and voila! it fit! I’ve never seen two delivery guys so surprised (and somewhat horrified) in my life.

We bought a brand new set from Lowes a few years ago and on Day 6 our washer broke. I called Lowes who immiediately said , hey in the first seven days we’ll just replace it! It was a huge blessing and we weren’t without a washer more than a day or two. It made a bad situation so much better. I’ll also give another plug. We have a whirlpool set and 18 months after getting it the 700 washer needed an 800 repair. Yes, we were glad we got the warranty. Anyway it took over a month to get the parts in. Whirlpool, even on facebook was zero help. Lowes on the other hand after a few phone calls and kind words offered us a bottom of the line loaner. It was wonderful! I didn’t have to spend the time or money at the laundromat and just so appreciated the kindness of our local Lowes! Hope the new washer works great!

Oh the joys of home ownership! This past summer our water heater started leaking and needed to be replaced. No big deal, right? WRONG! Apparantly our home inspector forgot to tell us that our chimney had never been lined, which meant it wasn’t up to code. Since our heater vents out of our chimney, this means it really should have been lined YEARS ago by the previous home owner. Long story short, no one would install our water heater until the chimney was lined and we were without hot water for ONE MONTH! And we have two little ones under the age of two! Terrible. Luckily my parents don’t live too far away and we were able to take them our laundry and bathe there. I feel your pain.

Do you love that the washer and dryer sing a little tune when you open the door? That is my favorite part. I’m so sorry that yours were broken upon arrival. I promise, they’re a good unit! We have the largest model of Bravos XL and have been in love for the last 3 months.
Our home warranty is replacing our dishwasher and it is FINALLY set to arrive this weekend. It was on backorder. Perfect timing too because the old one, that we aren’t using, started leaking water on our floor last night. We got it stopped but have to open the door and drain the tub and take it outside. I’m a little too excited for Saturday to arrive so I can wash dishes in a brand new, shiny dishwasher. If I run into the same problem where it is broken upon arrival, I’m sure that I’d be so disappointed that I’d have a good cry.

Maybe you can pull the washer back out while you wait for the new one and get that trim painted:) Looks fantastic!
We are in the middle of building our dream home and doing a LOT of the work ourselves (great time of year to be under an unheated house running the plumbing…NOT).Cannot wait to get in there and put to use some of the decorating ideas I have seen on your site!

I’m in Zambia and we recently got a new washer installed here. The plumber had to come and change out some pipes (they hand wash here!) to accommodate the washer. He set it all up and did the original run and it ran fine. However after that for several months actually, it was off and on doing that same grindy sound you mentioned and not working properly (stopping mid-cycle etc.). We finally turned the washer over and realized the guy had not removed the metal brace that they put on for transport. So, not sure if that was also the problem with yours, but was an easy fix and we are happy we did not have to replace the washer as things like that take alot longer here than they do in the US! Hope you get that new washer soon!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh man! We made sure all the bolts and rods that were supposed to be removed at out, so we’re pretty sure it’s not that. So glad it was an easy fix for you though!

Hate to be a Debbie Downer (whomp whomp) but I hated hated hated our last Maytag washer. We had the one year guarantee at Home Depot. The Maytag broke at one year and 3 months. Maytag sent someone out 4 days later and charged us $85 to tell us the fix was more than the washer cost in the first place. So off we went to Home Depot to buy a returned LG for half price- 3 years later and we couldn’t be happier!

Womp. Womp. Womp. (side note, my daughter has picked that saying up from me and says it with perfect timing. Kids are awesome.) So stinky about the washer!! Glad HD is going to take care of it for you all though!
I actually have a washing machine issue right now that I’m trying to diagnose! I have a 8yr old washer (that has moved with twice… we rented when we were in the military and the military housing didn’t supply washing machines for the laundry rooms. Yeah, awesome, right?!)
My machine is currently possessed. Like, it will randomly beep. Now, it’ll randomly beep throughout a wash cycle, though it still washes. Been spending a couple days googling and it’s either the front panel circuit board that needs replacing or…. who knows. :) I did just clean a massive chunk of built up detergent from under the detergent drawer and hoping that maybe it was trying to warn me that was there? Wishful thinking right? LOL Here’s to hoping…
You’ve definitely given me some thought about our next machine… the top loader looks nice and deep… I just took my comforter to my SILs because it wouldn’t fit in my front loader, but it fit in hers. So, when mine finally bites the dust, I might consider a top loader wash!

So sorry to hear about the washer, dang! Glad to hear they will bring a new one out!
Okay, here’s my random thought, maybe this goes with the Monica Geller closet, but like a junk drawer in the kitchen, where do you keep those random things that easily pile up on a washer and dryer counter? Things to return to the store, or a friend, holiday decorations that you haven’t finished collecting and putting away with, etc.? I think my house needs a junk room! (Or perhaps junk closet.)
YoungHouseLove says
Those all end up in the dining room on that table for us. It’s a mess in there! Nothing seems to collect on the washer and dryer in this house since they’re down the hall on the second floor, so it’s not much of a drop zone since it’s out of the way.

Well aside from the horrible noise, everything looks great! Do you think you two could pull out the broken washer and prim and paint the baseboards like you wanted? I wouldn’t want you to scratch your floors, but if you could- maybe put it into a thick moving blanket- this might be a (very thin) silver lining!
YoungHouseLove says
Yeah, I think we could try (these new ones are a lot lighter than our beastly old ones) I just have to see if I feel like spending that much time on the floor – it takes four coats and I’m feeling pretty sick/prego these days… haha!

Omg – I can’t believe the washer was defective :-(
We had a newish washer (front loader) die with wet washing locked in the machine. The repair guy ended up smashing the door off with a hammer so I could get my washing out and they replaced it with a new machine a few days later. It still involved a couple of trips to the laundromat to keep up with the laundry though.
Hope the new one runs like a dream on Thursday :-)
PS – I hate bending but not ready to replace yet so we’re raising our washer and dryer on a plinth when we remodel the laundry.
Darcey says
We had to replace our ancient washer/dryer pair just before Christmas – it didn’t have any sort of buzzer, and the dryer could only run 30min at a time, which means it took restarting it at least 3 different times, so a minimum of 90 minutes, and that’s if you remembered it exactly on time!
After doing some research and seeing the amazing deals HD was running, we ended up getting a front-load LG pair, and are so happy with them. I actually enjoy doing the laundry now! And the whimsical little chime is just too precious for words! (It also has the digital count-down, which I, too, love.)
Lena says
Oh – noooo. That sure seems like you’ve guys had one of those months. I hate those and I hope it will be limited to no more this year.
BTW since you guys are getting a new one it might be worth pulling out the washer and dryer to paint behind there and if there is any issues for you to get them back in then you can have the installer help you with the dryer. I’m guessing the washer doesn’t need to go back in.
You might want to look into those auto shut off things too in case of a leak. I think it senses water and will then shut the water off so if your hose or washer starts leaking it will turn off the water. I mean try to make having to have the washer out into a good thing to improve on this as well.

Thanks for the tips Lena!

Yeah, I’d be less than enthralled if my brand-new washer wasn’t actually washing anything — and was basically informed the company would get around to it within a week. Do what? Glad to hear it’s being resolved by Home Depot in a more timely and efficient fashion!

We had to replace our 3 year old washer recently (in fact our new one is being delivered tomorrow). Luckily we had the foresight to get an extended warranty. After 5 repair visits (always being a week or so apart) and being without our washer for almost THREE MONTHS (that’s a lot of laundry) the warranty company decided it was in their best interest to replace it rather than continue trying to fix it. Our last washer was a Maytag and after talking to our repair guys they both recommended getting an LG. At this point I just want a machine that works rather than giving the stink eye to my ever growing pile of laundry. I will always get the extended warranty on all our major appliances. It definitely saved us. Home Depot’s warranty cost about $120 per machine but that will cover the initial diagnosing visit from a repair company.

Love the washer & dryer set. Wish I would have splurged when we bought our last dryer. It’s less than a year old & we just discovered that the timer knob doesn’t work anymore :( Machine would have run all night if it hadn’t dawned on me that I hadn’t brought up the laundry before bed one evening. THAT could have been a disaster!!
Come to find out that so many parts/teeth/wheels are made of plastic now a days & they just break faster :(
I’m disappointed on how poorly things are made anymore, as you know, even an inexpensive dryer isn’t cheap.
And we did splurge on the new gas stove we had purchased about 3 months prior to the dryer dying. Worked great the first day – next day the oven wouldn’t stay on.
Samsung did get someone out within 48 hours though – after begging when I was told it would be a week.

ooh, the stained plywood under the w/d is genius! I’m glad you went with a top loader after having had both….I’ve never had a front loader, so now I’ll feel less like I’m missing out on something ;)

Oh! I forgot to add, I called and complained and got a 25% off next coupon from Nebraska Furniture Mart. Which was a win win, I went and bought a new dining room table the next week!

Maybe the silver lining is that you can attack some of that blue trim paint when they remove this one!!

Ooh… sorry about your washer. :( That stinks. You had me at hello with your post title though! Funny enough, we have those same words plastered on the wall of our laundry room! Die hard Outkast fan here!

Sherry,
I can totally relate! When we moved into our home in Fredericksburg on June 1st, I was 8 months pregnant and we had issues with both the washer and the dryer! YIKES! Luckily we got it all squared away about 1 week before our daughter was born…
Planning on coming down to the home show this weekend. We’ve got lots of projects ahead and we’d love to see you guys talk!

Isn’t that crazy?! When VA Tourism contacted us for their “real people campaign” we were so flattered. You know we love VA!

That’s such a bummer that it didn’t work – boo! They sure don’t make them like they used to! I’m glad you talked them into exchanging for a new machine. I refuse to buy any appliances at Home Depot because of there “no returns” policy on appliances. When I went through two lemons, Lowe’s exchanged them no questions asked. I would suggest the extended warranty most definitely though since everything’s electronic. If I remember correctly, HD gives you 4 additional years for $100 (which pretty much would cover a single service call when you think about it). I’ve heard good things about squaretrade.com for warranties as well – supposed to be better priced.

Thanks for the info Dana!
