First lets rewind to this post where I said “As for if the bed can move, the floor plan of this room is a definite challenge thanks to “things” on each wall (two very off-centered windows, a nook across from the door, and a nook with the sink tucked into it on another wall – and a chandelier in the exact center that looks off if the bed isn’t in the right place). So we’ve tried the bed in a bunch of spots, but the place that works best for us is where it lives now (it’s the only long flat wall in our entire room).”
Well, after seeing a few inspiring glossy mag photos, we decided it might not be the weirdest thing in the world for the bed to be right next to a window. See, moving the bed would do one major thing for us: allow us to ditch our sadly-too-small-for-our-giant-room side tables (which we couldn’t do on the old wall where they lived, since the door would swing open and hit anything larger).
So although we weren’t 100% sure how we’d handle the odd nook to the right of the bed and the window that would nearly touch the bed on the left, we just decided to go for it and see what we could come up with. But before we moved anything, we got new curtains from Ikea for $5 a pop (Vivan panels, which are our favorites from our first house). They come two per pack for $9.99, and aren’t super heavy or super sheer, just sort of breezy and light – which we thought this room could use since it has a big dark rug on the floor (and we’d eventually love to stain the wood floors a dark mocha color).
They definitely layer right in and add some softness (we hope to reuse the old green curtains I made in the playroom). Didn’t hem the new guys yet though- but I probably will someday. Haha.
Then it was time to move stuff around. First we removed our insanely heavy organic mattress (which can best be described as the equivalent of lifting 50 dead bodies, not that we’d know…) and then we slowly inched the bed over to its new spot across from the doorway (so you can walk at least ten steps into the room instead of three before slamming into the side of it, which happened in its old position by the door).
Next we shimmied the rug into position under the bed in its new spot before nearly blowing a gasket moving the mattress back onto the bed in its new spot. It still looked really really weird.
I was excited to start moving some other furniture around, but John had to duck outside to work on some deck stuff and Clara was napping so you know what I did, right? That’s right, my 5’2″ self got it done on my own. Haha. I hauled our dresser into the nook to act as a much larger bedside table and then stared at the blank space under the window on the other side of the wall for a nice long time while I caught my breath. It wasn’t functional to give up a night table and we definitely appreciate the balance of having two bedside lamps (especially along a wall with an off-centered window and an odd corner nook without any sort of symmetry going for it at all).
So I literally walked around the house (avoiding the nursery so as not to wake the dragon Clara) to see if there was something we already owned that I could bring in to use as my bedside table under the window. Sure enough, my eyes rested on this guy who has been hanging out in the dining room:
The funny thing is that this cabinet is actually meant to be a bedside table, so here I was thinking I was being a rebel to stick it in the dining room, only to drag it into the bedroom and realize that I loved it under the window. Don’t get me wrong, I loved it in the dining room too, so for one of those places we’ll have to grab something else (it might just be a placeholder in the bedroom and we’ll get another table and return it to the dining room eventually – or vice versa). Update: Folks are asking if the chandelier is still centered over the bed, since it’s hard to tell from this angle. Thankfully it’s still perfectly centered! If the nook were a foot wider this arrangement wouldn’t have worked – and if we had a king-sized bed instead of a queen it would have been no dice! Whew.
Then I hung the art that used to hang above the dresser in the nook, and put up an old oil-rubbed bronze mirror over the bed – which used to hang in our living room, but was replaced with a white mirror about six months ago. It added a little more “something” to the big blank wall above the bed, but we’re thinking that down the road we’d love to make a big upholstered headboard for that area and maybe move the mirror up so it’s closer to the height of the big round chandelier in the middle of the room since we think height in the center of that wall might be really nice and will further disguise the fact that our bed is jammed between an awkward nook and an oddly off-centered window.
Here’s Burger stretching. That is the only reason I took this shot. Cracks me up. I actually really liked the smaller white table on one side with a larger wood dresser on the other side since they both seemed to fit into those spaces well and the matching artichoke lamps added some nice balance. Ideally the white night table would be a bit taller so both lamps would be at the same height, but for now I just grabbed a stack of books to add some height to that light on my side of the bed. Maybe down the line we’ll add castors or little legs to give it a bit more lift, but for now it does the trick.
Moving that art into the nook to sort of balance the window on the other side of the bed seemed to make an instant difference since that nook no longer looked like a big blank wall, and the two frames felt rectangular and balanced with the window on the other side of the bed (admittedly more so in person since the window is blown out in this pic, but is very easy to see in real life).
I also mentioned that I dragged the leaning mirror from across the room to where the wood dresser used to be, which seemed to add even more balance to the new setup since it was a nice shot of dark wood next to the white nightstand to tie into the wood dresser on the other side of the bed. We had that guy anchored on the wall so Clara can’t pull it down on herself, but thankfully the system just uses cable ties, so we were able to reuse the same system with two new zip ties in its new spot (you can see how the whole anchoring thing works here).
Here’s another view of things. Of course those two botanical frames look crazy on the wall with no bed under them, so we’re planning to rehang them in the corner of the room that’s on the other side of the sink nook (not pictured, but there’s a chair and a side table over there). And then anything from a cabinet or console to a large piece of art could end up on that wall someday. But this view definitely looks extra weird since it’s so unfinished on that back wall.
At this point we were tired but hopeful. It still looks kind of crazy to us, but not bad for about an hour of work. And we definitely have bigger plans to help it make more sense over time, so we’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, here’s Exhibit A that we’re dorks for life. Yes, we had the tripod all set up so we took a moment to pretend to be angry monsters under the bed. Although looking back John just looks like a mischievous kid and I look like a sullen teenage vampire.
Then we pretended to sleep. Totally normal, right?
Then we thought we were done taking pictures, but later that night we found ourselves standing in the hallway – just marveling at the new view.
We couldn’t find a recent pic of the old view into the bedroom, but this is one from over a year ago, just to give you an idea of how the side of the bed was sort of the only thing you’d see before:
Now instead of seeing the bed, there’s just a straight shot into the room with the dresser in the nook. It’s actually really nice not to see the bed from the hall anymore, and the nook looks a lot less weird and bare when there’s actually something in it.
So that’s where we landed after a few hours of bedroom noodling. Although I must admit that we did something a little more DIY-heavy after this little furniture-move-a-palooza, so we’ll share those details this afternoon (just have to upload the pics and write the post). In short: we’re getting somewhere, but we’re definitely not completely there yet (but what else is new around here, haha). More soon!

First time commenter – long time reader. This is very exciting. :)
I just had to say that I LOVE the new room!!!! It really is amazing how much more character the room has now.
One question I have – can you both reach your bedside tables easily?? They seem to be a bit of a stretch – especially the dresser since it sits far back. Is this a problem or does it work just fine for you?
YoungHouseLove says
Thankfully the nook side is John’s and he has nice long arms. The old side tables were low and these are nice and high, so even thought they’re a little further away we don’t have to reach down anymore so it’s all ok!

If you want to move heavy furniture around the next time you could try the potato trick. Just put raw potatoes cut in half under the legs and you can move whatever you want very easily. Does not work on carpet :-)

No way! Love that.

I love the changes to your bedroom! To me the new arrangement looks really inviting. I love using non-matching furniture pieces and tying them together in some way, i.e. with your matching lamps. Nice job!

Perfect! Always better to leave the walk way into a room open…looks fantastic!

This really looks so much better! Pretty amazing that the light managed to stay centered with the bed. The view into the room makes your hallway look so much longer! Much better than seeing the bed :)
Mona says
By Feng Shui’s standards, you get an A+. I’m not a zen master by any means but I read that putting your bed at the farthest side of the room facing the door brings in good chi…or something like that.
It looks good.
domestiCate says
Yay! I’ve always felt like your bed would be best on that wall, though I never commented. Funny how we can be so opinionated about other people’s stuff, huh? Anyway, it looks great! There’s just something about a bed facing the door that feels right (as opposed to the side of the bed facing the door). It’s much more welcoming. And I’m all about the asymmetry of the bedside tables. Well done!
Kahley @ Ambiance says
Totally love this new layout! Good job on balancing out the window too!

I love those IKEA curtains. I have them all over my weekend house – they give privacy, but allow such a lovely soft light in. And I love how long (and cheap) they are as we have REALLY tall windows (I don’t even have to hem them). And if you ever want to go something darker and neutral, the light beige LENDA at $19.99 a pair are AMAZINGLY GORGEOUS when hung. They look like really expensive linen curtains. I keep just wanting to hug them.
This arrangement looks really good. I have to say that I’m not a fan of everything lining up and being matchy matchy kind of decorating, so this suits my style a bit more. I like to mix things up. In our bedroom my husband has a low modern bedside table and I have an antique tallboy. But it works; AND the only place for our bed in the whole room was with two windows right behind our bedhead (off center- more behind mine), so you can definitely work this with a nice big wall behind. And I can totally understand you loving the view from the hallway. I would keep finding excuses to walk down the hall…
cathy says
Hey! I love the changes. Also, I love the 2 different “side-tables”. One is feminie and dainty in white and the other more masculine due to its dimensions and wood tone. I think it`s great that it just happened to be Sherry’s side so “yay for happy accidents”. GREAT JOB!!!!
Ashley@AttemptsAtDomestication says
It definitely makes for a better view down the hall! It’ll take some getting used to for sure though!

Just noticed something here!!!!
All through your home you have all WHITE frames…. cept here in your bedroom!!
Looks great, but am curious as to why?
YoungHouseLove says
Isn’t that funny? When we moved into this new house we wanted to try doing some things different (not all white curtains, some with patterns and color, not all white frames, some in dark colors like ORB, etc). Just wanted to play around and see how it turns out. We still love white frames, but ORB isn’t bad either! Haha.

I really want to move our bed to the wall opposite the door like this (ours is now like yours was, right in the door) but there’s an AC vent on that wall that would be covered if we did that. It drives me crazy! It’s the only vent in the room. And before you rearranged I used to tell myself “well Sherry and John have their room set up like this so it’s got to look better than I think it does.” But now I can’t rationalize it anymore! I hate it! And I’m super jealous how well it worked out for you. Love it.
YoungHouseLove says
Aw man, can you reroute the vent under the bed so it blows out? They sell little “elbows” that you can attach to direct air out from behind things like cabinets or furniture I think!

Are you getting rid of your old bedside tables? I’ve been jealous of them since you scored them!
If you are looking to get rid of them, email me because I will definitely pay you what you got them for or more. And I’ll pick them up!

Thanks Margo! There have been a few requests for them but we’re not sure we’re selling them or just reusing them in another room. We’ll post the link to our craigslist ad if we ever decide to sell them though!

I love how the lamp on the dresser ties into the lamp on the console behind Karl. I love the progress and wish I could buy your old nightstands off you!
Paula Bartlett says
I prefer the old arrangement. The room seems smaller now and the bed wall seems cluttered and busy. Also, whoever sleeps on the left side of the bed has to reach back into the alcove to grab a book or turn the light off, so that seems very awkward to me. I would have left the bed where it was and made the wonky little alcove into a seating area. While my tastes generally are eclectic and that is why I love your website, I like bedrooms to be calm, sparse, and serene like the old set-up was. I adore the rug. Love your website, and that little Clara is a pure delight.
Aimee says
Ohhh a risque post title? I like it :)
S says
I think it looks great with a much better flow! If you were worried about the bed being right next to only one window, I wonder if a mirror in the nook (either leaning on the dresser or hung on the wall above it) might make things feel more balanced?
YoungHouseLove says
Always another possibility down the line- just using what we have for this phase of things!

Aly says
Is it bad that the pun of the title didn’t even occur to me, because clearly nobody would discuss moves in the bedroom besides movig furniture? The room looks absolutely wonderful. Way better in pictures at least. And the view from the hall made me slightly drool.
Jennifer G. says
I really, really like the new move! Great job!
SG says
So – what do you do about nail holes when you move art, mirrors, etc around? Do you just leave them be or do you try to patch them? I worry that my patch will stand out more than the hole did.
YoungHouseLove says
We leave them if we just hang something else over them and try to remember to patch the exposed ones (haven’t yet, but the next time we go to the basement I’ll try to remember to grab the paint so we can touch things up!).

It sure seems like you are having trouble in this house. Doing and re-doing and buying and re-buying. Must be nice to have that kind of budget! Now its going back to the old serene look of your old bedroom, funny. One way to do art cheaply is to buy Fabric and staple it onto wooden frames. You could do three large ones for the wall with the botanicals. I know choosing things for the long haul can be a hit or miss thing I guess. Good Luck getting it the way you like it!
YoungHouseLove says
That’s funny because it seems like we did a lot more redoing and rebuying in our first house to us! It took us 4.5 years to be “done” there and we’ve just been here for 1.5 years! As for the budget, we got our night stands for $10 at a yard sale and plan to resell them for $10 each if we don’t want them anymore! Most of the art is homemade and we used yard sale frames or canvases we got on clearance at a craft store. The dresser was a hand-me-down from John’s parents. The curtains were $9.99 each. And decisions like working with our bed instead of buying a new one (and rearranging the room, which is also free) helps to keep the budget down! Our chandelier was just $50 from Ikea and has stuck around, and the old rug will go in the living room, where we wanted to buy a jute rug anyway! I actually think we’re slowly getting better at “wasting” less, so we try to reuse things or craigslist them to make back our money back so there’s not much loss! Hope it helps.

I like the new setup. I just moved what wall my bed is on in January after giving the room a new paint job. I didn’t think it would work on the wall but it really did open up the room on either side of the bed. I originally had it between the two windows in the room. I also couldn’t help thinking about this, are the lamps kind of a far reach from the bed now? Or does it just look that way in the photos?
YoungHouseLove says
Thankfully we can still reach them. The old tables were a stretch because they were low, so these are just a stretch out since they’re wide, but so far so good!

s
Vivian says
I AM SO GLAD YOU MOVED THE BED!!!!! I always thought it was a little weird right next to the door, plus I always have a “who gets killed by the ax murderer first” fear of being the one sleeping right by the door, so I would never want my bed by the door. At least make the killer walk across the room, right?
Chrissie says
Haha I know what you mean, but I’m just picturing an axe murderer creeping up to the door and then being all, “Oh gosh, I have to walk all that way to the bed? *sigh*” and leaving.
It’s like the blankets theory – it’s safer under the blankets.

Andrea Melberg Thompson says
Very curious… Can you reach either the white bedside table or the dresser from the bed? Could you actually turn on either lamp while lying in the bed?
Whatever works for you and so enjoy everyone’s own look, but I wondered about functionality. I am sure you might also explore a round table there at some point.. I am betting???!!!
Also, thanks for clarifying the mirror. I always wondered WHY it sat on the floor and wasn’t hung up. Interesting to learn it is anchored on the wall, but meant to sit on the floor. I just thought you didn’t hang it because you moved it around and weren’t settled on placement, so wouldn’t commit to putting big anchors to hold it’s weight in the wall. It feel unfinished/uncommitted to me… but that is what I love about our homes, there isn’t wrong or right ways, just each our own ways.
Thanks for ALL you do and SHARE! Much enjoyed!!!
Andrea
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, we both can reach. The old tables were low, so we had to stretch for those too, and these are nice and high but just a further reach outward so it’s sort of the same. Thankfully we don’t have a problem so far! Especially since tall John has long arms, and he has the side with the nook! Haha.

Koliti says
Ahhh…better feng shui.
Having your bed in the pathway of the door allows too much (not so good) energy to flow in your path.
It would be interesting to see if you both (especially John since he slept in direct line of the doorway and Sherry on the other side of him) notice any differences. Like sleeping better, not as many colds, allergies, just a sense of enjoying the space more etc.
As you noticed already, the view is much improved.
Good to see that you don’t seem prone to having electronics in your bedroom (computer, tv, etc) – not good energy for your sleeping area.
Diana says
I just think it’s funny that I suggested this when you first moved in and you guys didn’t even let me post my comment.
YoungHouseLove says
Not sure what you mean about not posting your comment! Why wouldn’t we post a comment about moving our bed? We post all critical comments about decor – the only ones that get nixed are when someone says something truly snarky like “your baby is ugly.” We might delete one comment a year! Perhaps you posted as “anonymous” which sometimes gets caught in spam? There are tons of comments from people telling us what we’ve been doing wrong (decor-wise or blog-wise) over the last 4.5 years! I’d guess over 500! Haha. Like this one and this one for example. Hope it helps!

Can you reach the lamps to turn them on/off from bed?

So I rushed right out this afternoon and bought 2 sets of the IKEA Vivan (or Vivian as some packages said) for my bedroom. IKEA is 5 minutes from here!
Tomorrow, I’ll head to Home Goods to see if they have some lamps that I like. And I’m even thinking about moving the bed but even with my furniture mover pads I’ll probably need some help. I’ll end up with windows on each side of the bed that are not the same shape but I think it will work with curtains that are the same and furniture in front of them.
I love the new look in your bedroom and I’ve already read about Ed’s changes. Thanks for the inspiration.

I love this site so much! I love all the things you do around the house.

Sherry, you’ve definitely got the Kristen Stewart thing going on. Except you’re a better actress.
Love the switch-up. My bedroom is laid out so bizarrely that I really only have one option for the bed, which is right in front of the one window. However, it faces east, and as much as I like natural light, I DO NOT like it blasting in at 5 a.m. — which is why I have a blackout curtain.

This is the second design blog I’ve read today that seems to reference some rule about beds not being next to windows!! It’s so weird to me, because we have our bed centered between two windows and I love it!!! I love the air coming through the open windows at night, and after living in a cave for 4ish years, I’m loving the windows in every room in our new place!! Lol seriously, what is this rule?!?
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, I don’t know that it’s a rule, I think I just always look for a long flat wall and assume the bed should go there! I even had our bed under a centered window in our last house (the curtains were like a headboard) but somehow an off-centered window had me stymied! Haha.

This looks great! I’ve been following your blog for a few years now, but I’m a first time commenter. I’m not an expert or anything (but my husband and I finally just bought a house last month after moving SIX times in the 3 years we’ve been married, and I’ve done this every time) but I’ve always found that in 99% of bedrooms the arrangement looks best when the foot of the bed is pointing at the door (I call it my own personal “feng-shui”). I completely think this rings true in your room! I think it looks so much better, and it looks like the walk-flow is a bit roomier from the pic. I always try this type of arrangement first because it’s almost always the right fit!
Chrissie says
One of the downsides of being in such a different time zone… I accidentally read the afternoon post first, and was getting really confused by the pictures!
“Wait, was that like that before? Where did that window come from? Isn’t there a door somewhere?” Yeah, I’m a little slow on the uptake in the morning. And all the time.
But on the plus side, all of these changes are amazing! The room looks so much less cramped with the new arrangement, it seems to make better use of the space that you guys have.
Amy says
LOOKS AMAZING! I’m all about the Feng Shui (is that the proper spelling?) and having the bed face the door totally follows the laws of Feng Shui :)
What size of duvet do you use on your Queen size bed? My hubs and I just upgraded to a Queen and I’m wondering if our double sized Ikea duvet & cover is going to do the trick or if a King size duvet is needed to allow for some overlap. I like the drapping on the sides of your bed so I thought I’d inquire :)
YoungHouseLove says
We splurged for a king-sized duvet for the reasons you describe – we wanted a little bit of extra room for it to drape over. And so we don’t have any cover stealing issues going on!

I really love how this arrangement worked out. When you mentioned in your previous posts that your old layout was your only option, I agreed (I’m a sucker for symmetry) – but seeing this surprised me. I am so impressed that you can move things around in such little time and come out with a seemingly effortless “after” that looks like it’s from a magazine. IF ONLY!
I do wonder though if it will get old really fast for John not to have a side table within comfortable reach (having to reach over AND back). Is the top drawer being converted to house night table belongings? It seems like while before you were tied to a small side table, you are now living with less storage on that side because I assume the dresser holds clothing and not all night table things – right?
Even still, really impressive job. I envy your fearlessness and thinking outside the box.

It’s actually funny how many people think John can’t reach that- he has quite the wingspan so it hasn’t been an issue! He actually complained more about the old side tables (they were low, so we had to reach down a lot and couldn’t open the drawers from bed since they were beneath us) but the new “normal” height of our side tables has been great so far!
