Something about the knobs in our kitchen make us feel like we’re being watched.
Maybe you don’t see it, but after staring at them for the last few weeks, they’re starting to look a little something like this to us:
My favorite is the pirate.
But something’s definitely going to have to be done sooner or later. We feel like we’re living in that crazy Geico commercial – only without the good fortune of a stack of money sitting nearby (with some techno music blaring in the background). Speaking of which, we highly recommend playing the Geico commercial below while looking at the picture above. It really enhances the whole experience.
Now we can’t eat breakfast without singing “Somebody’s watching meeeeeeee.”
Deb says
Hilarious. Only you two!
Cait @ Hernando House says
Does this mean we should expect a post on new cabinet hardware very soon? Haha
PS- I like the pirate, too.
YoungHouseLove says
Someday down the line for sure. But for now we’re just entertaining ourselves by picturing different faces every day. And humming the Geico song.

AHAHAHHAHAH!
Kristie says
Eeek! I *see* your point. Very eyeball-esque now that you mention it. Do you have a *vision* for the kitchen yet. Ha! (No charge for the bad puns). :)
YoungHouseLove says
It’s starting to take shape, but we’re still not ready to pull the trigger. We’re big believers in living with things a while and going over lots of potential options in your mind before jumping in and doing something major that you might regret. Things like wall color can so easily be changed, but kitchens and bathrooms are usually much bigger projects. So we’re happy to gain a little momentum before tackling the major stuff in there. Although brainstorming ideas is one of our favorite hobbies these days. You can never be too prepared!

Y’all are so cute and funny. Your blogs really brighten up my day!
Cara says
So… does this mean you will be painting those bare cabinets soon?! I think we’re all dying to see the kitchen makeover sooner, rather than later.
YoungHouseLove says
We have big plans for the kitchen, we just like to live with things for a bit before making huge changes, just to be sure we think them through. We would never want to be hasty and regret things down the road!

My favorite is the dinosaur/loch ness monster.
I love the way you two think and I hope Clara turns out just as silly!

I am cracking up! That’s exactly what it looks like. I see a change of hardware post in the near future, because that’s pretty creepy!

Haha! For me, the microwave was a great big open mouth below two tiny eyes — creepy! :)

Your post reminded me of this commercial I saw a year or so ago… http://www.furrypuppet.com/blog/?p=223 and the fact that my creative husband actually wants to re-create one of these appliances makes me think we may be one day sending you one of the funniest/creepiest before and after photos of our kitchen!
Jenna says
Haaa! awesome; gonna be singing that song alllll day :)
& yes – that is creepy looking!
Jaimie@AtHome says
Haha! I totally see what you mean! Sooo many eyes!!
Peggy says
I’ve felt that way in my Dad’s knotty pine kitchen. At the very least, paint the centers of the knobs to match the knob?
Holly says
i love the full face man on the left!! he is cute =)
Julie says
Too funny!! Now I can’t stop seeing them when I look back at your first pic!
Can’t wait to see how you transform the kitchen..
stephanie says
i love this.
psst one other thing… i subscribe to a whole lot of wonderful blogs (a bit of an obsession… i’m working on it) and i think you two and annie’s eats still have the top place in my heart. yhl has the special distinction that i typically read all of your posts every time i log in to my reader. you really do a wonderful job. just wanted you to know. ;)
Zoua says
I just looked up Annie’s Eats from your comment on YHL.. and you got me hooked!!! :)
Krystal says
Oh my goodness, this is so funny! And I totally see what you’re talking about. I used to find weird stuff like that all the time in my parents house. For example, there was an area on my closet doors where my dad added too much stain, and in my mind’s eye it looked like a turtle climbing up the door. Rather than take a picture and photoshop what I was seeing though, I just took a black Sharpie and drew in the turtle’s eyes and shell. My eight year old brain was so proud and I exclaimed “Mommy, look! I told you it looks like a turtle!” Mommy was not happy…
Abby says
LMAO!! I will always laugh when I see those knobs in anyone’s house now!
Christine B says
We have those same knobs in our bathroom-super creepy in there too. Maybe they use to be trendy back in the day. . .

My daughter makes it a habit to always find a “face” in random places, when I showed her this, after composing myself from laughing so hard, she too had the giggles!!!
LOVE this post!!!
carolinaheartstrings says
Yep, look at the first picture, stare at the second one for a minute or two, watch the video and then scroll back up to the first picture. You don’t even know the drawing to see the pirate patch. Scary! Time to get new hardware. YIKES.
Trista says
I think it’s fantastic that YHL is in the top running for the Homie Awards at Apartment Therapy, and you haven’t even asked for votes.
My husband and I are about to buy our first house, and I’ve loved getting ideas from your new place. Keep up the good work!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Trista. We’re just happy to be nominated among such amazing fellow bloggers!

I think the corner cabinet looks like it’s having a conversation with itself.
I’m sure you’ve thought about spraypaint, but I’m going to give a little testimonial anyway. I used oil rubbed bronze spraypaint with a clear topcoat on our bathroom hardware; it looks exactly the same now as it did six months ago when I first did it.
Kris says
Those curtains must have worn you guys out yesterday. Two “easy” posts today? LOL
Dawn says
LOL!!!! Too funnny!!!! My next door neighbor had those and the same color cabinets. She sanded the cabinets then stained them a dark mahogany color and put lovely brushed nickel pulls on them. Beaut-i-mous…:)
Kim says
We had the exact same knobs in our kitchen (on white cabinets). I bought new brushed nickel knobs on ebay for like $1.09/each. It was a 15 minute project that made a HUGE difference!! Love what you are doing with your new house. You are an inspiration!!
Jamie says
Uh-oh, John’s turn to go loopy!
Pam Redington says
Maybe paint the cupboards white then the knobs would blend in better?
You guys are awesome!
YoungHouseLove says
We definitely have plans to paint those cabinets and replace the hardware down the line. Can’t wait!

You two are master bloggers. This was the perfect post after the very serious (and very good) post this morning! I laughed out loud when I saw the second picture.
Can’t wait to see what you do with the kitchen!
Janice says
Every time I see that awful kitchen I just want to at least slap some paint on it or preferably take a crow bar to it! The cabinets, the back splash, the paneling, the counters, the floor – so many things to fix. If you could just let me at your kitchen and your parquet floors with a crow bar, I would be a very content girl. But I’d be stealing all your fun!
LOL at the pirate!
Have a great weekend! Love the blog
Brittany says
I haven’t laughed that hard all week {and I laugh alot, trust me}!!! Thanks for the humor. Can’t wait to see what you’re going to do with that kitchen. We just remodeled ours a month ago!!
Jessica says
I totally see it too. I have a similar issue with the tile in my shower, the patterns in the marble have me seeing a samurai, a scottie dog, and a dragon. Seriously.
Jo says
That’s hilarious! At least it’s an easy fix. When I was a kid, there was a scary face in the textured ceiling above my bed. Made for some freaky dreams.
Kai B says
HAhaha! I love the snake! I think she’s a she. :)

Tanya from dans-le-townhouse.blogspot.com says
Too funny! I love this post and I totally get you. I see faces everywhere – especially printed fabrics and drapey cloths.
DJ says
LOL! You should hot glue little googley eyes to the pulls! That would really freak out your guests (or you guys, if you hadn’t yet had your morning coffee…)
Susan @ Retro Restyling says
Hahaha! I love it! You are so right! Eyeball pulls… why is it that people design stuff for the house to very slyly represent parts of the body? Like, and pardon my silliness, but boob lights… what’s up with that? Like I want to look up in someone’s house and feel like a lit up breast is lighting my way. For example:
http://www.homedepot.com/Lighting-Fans-Indoor-Lighting-Indoor-Ceiling-Lighting/h_d1/N-5yc1vZbvnl/R-100686832/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053
Stephanie Phillips says
YES!!! My husband calls them the boob lights! Ha!
Julia M says
I can’t stand those boob lights….these knobs are right up there though. Like, did they really not see the correlation?

Susan @ Retro Restyling says
For real! I mean “Tune in Tokyo” if you want to replace the bulb, you know??? LOL
Snickrsnack Katie says
Those knobs are freaking me out! LOL
Sarah says
Whenever I hear that song it makes me think of the Jim Carrey flick *The Truman Show*….that movie changed my life! well, exaggeration, but it definitely made me more self-aware.

hahaha those knobs gotta go…they are a bit freaky. When are you guys going to start the kitchen renovation?

Ha! I think the snake is my favorite. Haha on the previous commenter’s boob lights, S and I call them the same thing. I’d love to see painted gray cabinets with darker pulls. Can we vote?
Rachel says
Lol!
We had similarly delightful kitchen cabinet handles too…..they were twigs. Yes, little metal stick inspired handles. So happy to have those gone!
