Something about the knobs in our kitchen make us feel like we’re being watched.
Maybe you don’t see it, but after staring at them for the last few weeks, they’re starting to look a little something like this to us:
My favorite is the pirate.
But something’s definitely going to have to be done sooner or later. We feel like we’re living in that crazy Geico commercial – only without the good fortune of a stack of money sitting nearby (with some techno music blaring in the background). Speaking of which, we highly recommend playing the Geico commercial below while looking at the picture above. It really enhances the whole experience.
Now we can’t eat breakfast without singing “Somebody’s watching meeeeeeee.”

So this totally reminds me of when you were a kid and you’d look at the fronts of cars and think they looked like faces ;)
Elizabeth says
I still do that! Have you checked out the front of a new Mazda 3 lately? They are totally SMILING at me! LOL
Elizabeth says
Oh my…look at this pic I found…ha ha!

Love it Elizabeth! I totally won’t buy a car that doesn’t look happy – some just look downright mean!
Tara says
You guys are too funny, thanks for the laugh – I really needed one. My favorite face is the one on the far left, he looks a little crazy!
Ronda says
I read your comments and I know you are planning, waiting, building momentum, whatever.
But please just get a can of oil rubbed bronze spraypaint and go to town on those knobs. Please. Just do it NOW. Clara is in her formative years, she can’t be gawked at my cabinetry.

Hahah you guys just made my day. I love it! I think my favorite is the little guy under the sink who looks a little sheepish (with the squiggly mouth).

Hilarious as usual!

How timely!
I woke up in the middle of the night and my first thought was I wonder when John and Sherry will tackle their kitchen, will they repaint the cupboards? or do a complete overhaul?? Then my mind wondered what you guys were like ‘in real life’ haha
I pictured you would be like Marshall and Lily in how i met your mother… Okkaaaaaayyyyy (I am a little sleep deprived at the moment due to a teething 14 month old so forgive me!)

Oona says
Ha! My fiance and I see faces everywhere. In tree bark, flowers, car design… I even spotted a face in the rust of a truck door he’s restoring!
Carmen says
Haha! This made laugh out loud! (Very loudly, at that!) I think the snake is my fave. You guys are too silly!
Kelsey S. says
My parents have the exact same hardware on their kitchen cabinets. I never thought of them as eyeballs (despite being an imaginative child), but my point of view might be changed forever!
Jenn L @ Peas and Crayons says
OMG good thing its still light out! You just scared me with that! oh thank heaven my knobs are not eyes

hilarious! I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

THAT’S why I never liked knobs like that! My parents had them in their kitchen, and although we didn’t have the eyeball version, we did have the ceramic/metal pulls on all our cabinets in our house when we moved in. One of the first things I did was switch them all out for brushed nickel hardware. Cheap (about $20 for the whole kitchen), easy, and now I can live with our poorly-done laminate counter and refaced ancient cabinets.
The cabinets are original to the house, but the previous owner put on cheapo doors and facing to make it look like he’d done a major rehaul.
Briel K. says
Hahaha too funny! I can’t wait to see what you do with the kitchen! I know it won’t be for a while but I’ll be eagerly waiting. :)
katy says
LOL…eyeball knobs. Creepers.
Korinne says
My parents have those EXACT knobs AND…wait for it….I’ve said the EXACT SAME THING since I developed an imagination! :)
PRICELESS!
Runeatrepeat says
I love the pirate eye! Ha :)
Cair says
I have those same knobs (and cabinets, too). Now I’m going to start seeing creature eyes instead of ugly knobs.
I’ll be watching for your kitchen redo, it’ll give me inspiration for my own kitchen.

Do you have a html/java button we can post on our blogs to link to yours? I didn’t see any available, and I’d love to post yours as one of my favorite blogs (because it is!).

A friend of mine has a backsplash just like yours! She’d like to “paint” the tiles so that they are all white, covering up the pattern. I’m not sure if you guys are planning on leaving your backsplash as is, or re-tiling, but I was wondering if you had any suggestions/ideas/knowledge on alternative options to spruce up existing tile backsplash. I also have a tile countertop in my bathroom that is super outdated – I’m trying to get ideas on how to take a shortcut to update it too!
Thanks guys! Huge fan! :)
YoungHouseLove says
We’ve seen people use stick-on tiles (they now make all sorts of them, even stainless steel tiles that can be stuck right over dated old tile) so that’s always an idea. I’m not sure painting or reglazing would work in a kitchen since it has to stand up to steam and sauce splatters and stuff. But we have seen people use beadboard or even tin flashing right over their backsplash as well. We’re planning to demo ours out and retile, so of course we’ll share those details when we get there!

The Nester ( http://www.thenester.com/?s=beadboard+backsplash ) put up a bead board backsplash right over her tile. My girlfriend tried painting her tile and it looks like crap, honestly. She was told by the “experts” at home depot that you can’t put beadboard over tile, or use it in a kitchen as a backsplash. They claimed it wouldn’t be “moisture resistant” which is nuts. I have had beadboard backsplash in my kitchen all the way down to the granite and have zero problems with moisture. I have had it for a year. Good luck!

Love that project! So smart!

You got my apartmenttherapy homies vote for making me laugh out loud over the door knobs and then 10 secs later have a tear up over the fire stories. So true about being prepared. Could be flood (like here in Queensland Australia) or storms or fire. You never know what a day might bring!
Karla says
Hahahaha I totally see what you mean!
Phoebe says
I literally choked on my popcorn when I got to the picture with the doodles. That’s hilarious!
Connie says
LOL! I was just looking back at house pics yesterday and thought the only thing I would change PRONTO in the kitchen was the totally yesteryear knobs! (Not that I’m not on board with painting the cabinets, etc. eventually!) I had no idea I felt uneasy about them because they were looking at me! Yikes :)
michelle says
We had a cabinet with those too, you can paint just the screw in the middle white, will look sooo different if you do. aka no more eyeballs
salley says
Hilarious! I’m partial to the winker over there on the left.
Did you know the Geico commercials are homegrown? The Martin Agency made them. Such creativity coming out of Richmond these days!
YoungHouseLove says
Yes! We have lotsa love for Martin! John and I almost both worked there when we moved here from NYC (we were in advertising back in the day) so we’re so proud of RIC’s big agency!

My cabinet drawers have double red knobs similar to yours that look like the upper portion of a female torso! (that was me trying to find a classy way to say it) It could be worse!
Candice and Alyssa says
Oh my goodness! You guys are too funny!
casey says
oh my gosh this is too funny!! Now all I see is faces on the knobs too! hahaha
Melissa @ Sassy Mommy says
That is entirely too funny… I needed it after a busy day like today. This is the type of stuff my husband and I would do (more me than him). I would probably take it further and name them. I guess you understand the naming of objects since you have names for the future couch. Have a good weekend!
Anne G. says
You guys crack me up! So fun to visit your website at the end of a long week. I knew it would cheer me up, but had no idea how much! I’m kind’a hoping you will leave the eyeball cabinet hardware, just so I can always go to your site and hear the “who’s watching” music in my head, and laugh out loud. Thanks for this awesome post!
Sheri Fuhrman says
I hated my kitchen cabinet knobs too! I found a great deal at Amazon.com on some in old world bronze finish for less than $1.00 a piece! Knobs are so expensive and I had found these at one time for over $3 each and put them on my wish list just to remember what they looked like. One day, not long ago, I was editing my wish list and noticed they were marked down. I just bought 53 of them! They were the same knobs on the bathroom cabinets and 2 bedroom bi-fold doors. What a deal! I don’t blame you for wanting to replace those in your kitchen – they are kinda like freaky eyes!! LOL
Sheri Fuhrman says
Oh -and here is the description if you want to copy this and look it up on Amazon for yourself. They have a large selection and great prices. I noticed when I looked this up the price had gone up but still a great deal. Worth checking out and watching the price on if you are interested.

Beth says
Oh my gosh! My parents have the exact same ones in their kitchen from a mid 90’s renovation. I’ve been trying to get them to replace them for years because they really creep me out. I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks they look like eyeballs! I’m definitely showing them this post- maybe I’ll finally convince them. I always threaten them that I’ll come over sometime when they’re on vacation and replace them. :)

My favorite is the gigantic smiley face below the stove…of all the rooms you’ll transform I’m really eager to see how the kitchen changes! Kitchen #1 was stunning and with the bones this one has I know it will top the other…and…I’ll never look at hardware the same again :)

My husband is refusing to paint our kitchen cabinets so we went and got anthropologie knobs and stuck them on our MAPLE cabinets…there’s something not right about that. I’m waiting for your kitchen cabinetry update, hoping it will sway him :)

haha. I love this!! Can’t wait to see what you do with the kitchen!
