Many of you know that I have a giant binder full of clear plastic sleeves where I shove a ton of tear sheets from magazines, catalogs and other places that inspire me (read more about how I organize that magical binder right here).
And one ripped corner of a magazine that has been in my binder pretty much since its inception has been an image from Elle Decor with gorgeous vintage looking glasses in green, yellow, blue and pink with recessed designs on them that create a light and almost sea-glass-ish effect. They’re credited as being from this super swanky store (which doesn’t happen to have a shot of them on their site- boo) and they’re listed as being $13 a pop there. Kind of pricey for drinking glasses but they’re just so lovely I’ve kept the torn magazine corner around for years. I guess I have eye candy abandonment issues.
Then something serendipitous happened this weekend.
I found insanely similar looking glasses at World Market. For just… wait for it… $2.99 a pop! They were available in clear, green, blue, and pink- but you know we grabbed the green and blue ones (three of each, six in total) since they feel the most like “us.” I can’t wait for our next gathering so I can break out these babies and liven up the table. I love that it’ll be a subtly mixed and matched tableau thanks to the two layered tones that we went for. Because there’s nothing like green and blue glass goblets (with fleur-de-lis on them, no less) to make you feel oh so luxe whenever you sip from them.
And sip from them I must. John actually has a huge rule that I’m not allowed to purchase anything that we won’t use regularly (which is great because we don’t have cabinets full of “special occasion only” servingware and china). So whenever a craving for lemonade or chocolate milk has hit in the past few days I’ve just reached for one of these babies. And let me tell you, I feel very posh indeed. Much more so than I used to with my clear Ikea glasses of yore. I’ve even been thinking of going back for more since they’d also make adorable votive holders or even pencil cups on my desk. Gotta love something that multitasks (and looks so good doing it).
Of course we love that we spent $18 for six (as opposed to nearly that amount for ONE of the designer ones). In fact six of the designer ones would have set us back $78! And I even laughed to myself when we later came across another similar version of them (in green and blue only) at Anthropologie- which incidentally is charging $6 a pop. It’s definitely a break from the $13 designer price, but our $2.99 World Market finds are still the lowest that we’ve seen for anything even remotely similar. So there you have our recent drinking glass victory. Cheers to hunting down deals! And speaking of sleuthing out the look for less, have any of you found dead ringers for something a lot pricier and couldn’t believe your luck? Share and share alike.

Love the glasses from World Market! I bought them in every color for our Easter table and it made it so cheerful and bright. Just be careful, they’re fragile and we’ve broken one already :-(

First – love the glasses and will be heading to Pier 1 (no World Market here) to check out its likenesses. Second – I am so glad to hear you’re already using them, as you should! Third – don’t you feel totally justified in purchases like this when they’re in your binder? I know I do. It seems like a real treasure when you find what you’ve pined for. Enjoy :)

Our deal was pure luck! We just moved into a new apartment and our kitchen is technically an “eat-in” kitchen, so we have this very large space with nothing in it. I decided I wanted a counter of some sort to put there for extra storage and counter space, and they were running about $100+ (for a SMALL one) from Ikea, Target, etc.
Then our landlord tells us that the former tenants left behind an old (real!) wood dresser, and did we want it for free? Thanks to your posts on Baby P’s dresser/changing table, I sanded it, painted it, lined the drawers, and now it sits in our kitchen and holds utensils, kitchen towels, etc.
Best Deal EVER! :)

I bought those exact glasses in blue a few weeks ago, and LOVE them! I use them everyday…I am going to get more!

Very pretty glasses! I live in Short Pump and have never been to the World Market. Looks like I need to make a visit!

I LOVE shaker furniture and my husband and I fell in love with a bedroom set that would have set us back more than $6,000. I found a very similar set on craigslist for $600 and we had the dressers and night stands professionally refinished for $1200. So I was so excited to get a bed, 2 night stands, dresser, mirror and armoir all for the whopping price of $1800!!!! Less than 1/3 of the price. And the construction was fabulous with dove tails and it makes me happy every day when I wake up and go to bed.

Love the glasses and your site! Did you know that if you sign up on World Market’s email list you willl get notices of sales and occasional __% off coupons. For example, most recent was Friends & Family for 25% off–even more money saved! I always make a list of things I need from there (mainly the replacement bowl or glass) and wait for the deal.
Hope it helps and again, love the site! :)

I was on the hunt for cheap lamps for our bedroom and had the stacked ball lamp style stuck in my head. I finally, after lots of looking online, found an affordable one on Lamps Plus–$60 on sale. (http://www.lampsplus.com/products/Stacked-Ball-Acrylic-Table-Lamp__63462.html) It was the cheapest that I found anywhere and was ready to buy. I decided I would wait until I looked at Home Goods…and I’m so glad I did. They had almost the exact lamps there, and had two of them–for $40 each. I almost died. And not to mention these were crystal instead of acrylic like the Lamps Plus one. I hadn’t grabbed a cart and I literally ran to get one before someone else came and grabbed them. It was maybe the best shopping day of my life.

I was looking for some Marais stools for our kitchen. But $300 for one stool was never going to happen. So the Tabouret stool from Overstock finally became available again last week. We got 2 stools for $99.95. And the $2.95 shipping from Overstock is outstanding!

Love those new glasses! I would really love to see what else you have in that inspiration/wish list book!
Just wondering if you & John have a set of melamine/plastic dishes you use for outdoor dining? I would love to see it! I am looking to get a set for the patio bbqs this summer!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Andrea,
We actually don’t use melamine or plastic dishes (in our greenification efforts we’ve moved away from anything that’s not glass) but we’ve seen great sets at places like Target (they even sell stemless plastic wine glasses that you’d swear were glass until you touch them). Hope it helps!

TBH the only places ive found that i would love to have my reception are all in the US. Maybe we should come over to get married!! hehe.

We think you should both come over for a nice little US vacation and fill your backs with World Market glasses on your way home!

I had been looking at the M & L glasses in amber for over a year and broke down and got the Anthro ones because of cost and while I loved them they felt funny when I would drink from them. Something just wasn’t quite rigth so I reluctenly returned them and registered for the M & L glasses for our wedding and we were so fortunate to get them. I absolutelylove them!!!!!!! I love them as juice glasses in the morning or as our water glasses when we have multiple glasses set on the table. If you are up for the spurge, I can’t say enough about them! Thanks so much for your website. I love it!

I bought some of these at Pier 1 2 weeks ago for 1.25 a piece. I chose blue and a dark purple. 5 of them have been rocking up a storm with votives in them, it looks great. They also aren’t half bad with a dose of S Pallegrino either! Cheerio!

This is too funny–I used to work in sales/marketing/interiors at M&L in New York before that shop closed. In fact, I’m pretty sure I packed up those VERY glasses to send to Elle Decor for that shoot! One of the benefits of my time there was the discount–I used it to splurge on six of those little juice glasses when they were already on super sale, and I would cry if any broke.

We recently moved from Charleston, SC to Norfolk, VA (not too far from the Richmond shops!) and I really miss having World Market at my fingertips. :( I might have to make a Richmond run to IKEA and WM and whatever else we’re missing up that way. It sounds like all the shopping is the hour or so north where you guys are!

I found these exact same gorgeous Crate and Barrel Lamps http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=1220&f=26065
at a store called Christmas Tree Shops that started up here in New England. At Crate and Barrel they’re $90 bux each! I got mine for $20! :) I’m very proud of my good bargain find!

First- to Jessica J.(above)- did you know that there’s a World Market just across the HRBT in Newport News? I’m in the Norfolk area too and that’s the one I have to go to… kind of a pain but it’s closer for us than Richmond.
Second- Sherry, I was in World Market a couple of weeks ago and was dying over these green and blue ikat print placemats that would probably look so cute with your new glasses! Alas, I don’t have a rectangular table and our outdoor dining accessories are all in reddish tones so I didn’t get them… but for me they were one of those things you want because you love it so much, even if you don’t have a place for it!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Sonya,
That’s so funny because we think they made little seat cushions in the same ikat fabric and we were oohing and ahhing over ’em! So pretty. We’ll have to keep an eye out for the placemat versions (although we’re super fans of the runner so that would be even more exciting).

Add me to the list of folks who have a similar set from Pier 1. I bought them a year or so ago and I ADORE them! I actually use them as casual wine glasses.
I saw Michael Chiarello use similar glasses for wine on an episode of Easy Entertaining. I thought it was such a great idea that I had to find some for myself.
Andrea P says
Hey Sherry & John,
Did you already own a couple of these glasses before? I noticed one in the 2nd pic of this old post:
https://www.younghouselove.com/2008/04/glass-act/
I absolutely love them! Nice find!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Andrea,
Wow, good eye! We actually already did have that blue one for a few years (it’s a bit taller and I used it to hold pens on my desk for a while- among other things). I still have it and love it. Anyway, I snagged it for around $7 at Sur La Table but of course didn’t want to splurge for six at that price… so picking up one to use as a votive holder or pen cup felt like a nice compromise until (fingers crossed) I was able to hunt down a more affordable option.

Love those glasses! And I adore World Market, unfortunately there isn’t one close by here. :( although it’s likely better for my wallet. I too keep a binder for home ideas and even made up one with folders and pockets to put swatches etc… in when they moved to a new home this year. It’s the best for keeping all your inspiration and ideas in. I also find it helpful for pinpointing items and themes that I like. If it shows up over and over I suddenly realize, “Oh, I obviously really love that style of lamp!” I even keep a binder for fashion and makeup/hair ideas as well.
As for my shopping bargain, there have been a couple over the years, but my favorite was a craigslist find. I needed a tall cabinet for storing books and school supplies in (we started homeschooling our son this year) and loved the ones from Ikea that matched two of our other pieces we already had. Couldn’t afford them new at $275 each. Then I came across two being sold together for only $75 each! They were in great condition so I snapped them up. Gotta love Craigslist! :)

I was obsessed with finding those Crate and Barrel pictures (Classical Symmetry set) from Abbey’s makeover (on your portfolio page) that I went to a fabric store and started to make my own. THEN, i decided to find the name of the print and google that. I found them on posterunlimited.com for $17 instead of $70! Granted, they are not framed…but I will just use some JoAnn’s coupons for some black frames.

I have a “dream book” similar to what you have, but not nearly so pretty. Mine is just ripped out pictures taped on sheet protectors in a notebook. For years, I had ripped out pics (starting about age 10) and always wanted to organize them pretty. I decided if I did it pretty, I’d never get it done, so it just a ramshackled mess. My notebook is about to explode. Perhaps as I move to “dream book number 2” I will be encouraged by your “photo worthy” dream book to make mine a tad less shoddy. :)

Similar story here… there were some glasses that I loved at Z Gallerie, but they were pricey. I longed for them for about a year, and then I found them at Marshall’s! I scoured my nearby Marshall’s and TJ Maxx stores and ended up with the exact amount that I needed!

I started laughing when I saw this post! I had been drooling over the ones at Anthropologie and debating whether or not to spend the $6…I was SO excited to find something similar at World Market. Love how you’ve displayed them- thanks for the ideas :)

Hi
I read your blog when my sister tells me to, and the day you posted this just happened to be one such a day. Lo and behold, the very next day I was walking past a shop not too far from my apartment in London when I saw glasses identical to those in your magazine sitting in the window. I can take a look at the prices if you’re interested?

Hey RSammy,
That’s so funny. We’ve heard from other readers that they’re substantially more expensive overseas, so we’d love to know how much they are at that shop if you don’t mind. Either way it’s such a coincidence that you noticed them the day after our post. It’s such a small world!
