Some of you have asked how Burger’s getting along in the new house. Short answer: great. Short answer with a fancy Mary-Poppins-ish twist: just splendidly.
It only took him a day or two to figure out where his food bowl now lives and which door to wait at when he needs to go out. Other than that, he seems to be having fun discovering (and re-discovering) his favorite spots to hang. Here are some shots from the last two months to document his love for the new casa.
This one was taken pretty much right after we moved in. He quickly identified this sun-warmed corner of the rug in the living room and loved to park his keister there every morning.
It was part of his very own GTL routine – growl, tan, lick myself. Yes, we watch Jersey Shore since it’s my wife’s home state.
Though that routine has been interrupted by the introduction of Karl the sectional (since he blocks the sunspot), Burger has discovered a few new sun-drenched locations lately- including the windowsill itself. He’s such a cat sometimes. Here he is snuggled up in Clara’s hospital blanket (we brought it home for him to get used to her scent and now it’s his official “blankie”).
Sometimes he’ll move his relaxing into one of our laps, which really is a win-win for everyone on a cold morning.
And occasionally he even helps supervise Clara during playtime. Although he tends to sleep on the job. Unless of course a noise is heard outside. Then all howl breaks loose. See what I did there? I replaced h-e-double-hockey-sticks with the word howl. Booyah.
But when he’s not campaigning for the laziest chihuahua in the world title, he does his fair share of “quality control” – which basically means he helps us test out new purchases. Like our duvet:
And our new sectional pillows (even before the sectional was here, we tossed them on the sleeper sofa in the office and Burger took them for a test ride):
He also manages to squeeze in some playtime too, usually with his favorite toy: Divalectible. It was a gift (for Clara, actually) that Burger took an enthusiastic liking to. Don’t judge us for the name of this tiny stuffed chihuahua with a pink feather boa on it (Divalectible is actually its given “Beanie Baby name” and somehow it stuck). But feel free to judge Sherry for the weird noise that she makes during this video. I call it her “excited dolphin call.” She does it to get the dog to come a runnin’. Just not usually in public. Or on youtube.
Of course, it should come as no surprise that Burger continues to spend most of his days under the covers. So even though there’s a whole new house for him to explore, we’ve definitely got the same ol’ Burger on our hands.
So that’s what our oldest kiddo has been up to when he’s not “supervising” as we paint or demo something around the house. Life’s good when you’re an eight pound chihuahua.
Psst- If all goes well we might just have another post today or tomorrow for ya. Let’s just say that we’ve finally started gaining guest bedroom momentum (with just 6 days until the inlaws arrive – yikes) so we’re most likely working away as you read this. And Burger’s probably supervising.

Burger and Clara are the cutest! Sherry – did you ever go to “the shore” back in the day? Love that show! Can’t wait to see how they take GTL to Italy!
YoungHouseLove says
Yes! My friends and I went to the Jersey shore every year and had an especially memorable time there after senior prom. Basically our entire graduating class ended up out there and we had fun, Jersey style. But it was much tamer than the show. There was platinum hair and fake nails, but not as much excessive drinking and hot tubbing. We were classy back in 2000.

This post made me smile and even more excited to go home tonight and see my three pups for the first time in seven weeks (I love college, but I miss my dogs!)
Jennifer K says
That’s it! I’m officially in love with Burger. :)
My dog, Buster, always finds the sunny spots. Unfortunately, the way my house sits, they are hard to come by sometimes.

LOL….that might be my favorite video to date..why?..I dont really know..It is Friday after all.

Wahoo Friday!

liz @ bontempsbeignet says
Ahh, don’t you love when a dog can keep you warm and you can return the favor? Or dog is like a heat lamp. Love it.
He weighs about 3 times as much as burger, so sometimes it gets a little TOO hot.

He is like a cat, haha!
Rachel H. says
Burger is such a cutie! How did he get his name?
YoungHouseLove says
He was a tiny guy when we got him, and when he curled up he looked just like a hamburger patty. He also had a funny spotty belly like a cow. It was the perfect name.

I love how serene Clara is with Burger scampering around her. She just takes it in stride. What a good baby. :)
stephanie says
LOVE that first shot. Why have I never noticed how amazing that window is? My daughter was just watching the vid with me while waiting for her carpool ride to school…she said that Clara is the cutest baby she has ever seen:)
EMMA S says
I LOVE the second shot – he looks like he thinks he’s the king of the world. Very regal ;)
Julie says
That video made my morning. Both your kids are so sweet. I would love to know how Sherry came up with her dolphin sound – that is pretty amazing!
YoungHouseLove says
Hahah I have no idea where it came from. Seriously, it just popped out one day. And Burger came running. So it gets used sometimes- usually not when the camera is rolling. Haha.

My 90 lb lab/great pyr does a great job of keeping me warm! With our winter being so cold, I haven’t minded. Have to love those sun bathing cat/dogs! :) So cute
Cait @ Hernando House says
Too cute!
Our dogs like to “help” with DIY. Dots likes to sit on fabric that we’re making into curtains, lick paint swatches, etc. Freckles just supervises (and sometimes hides when it’s too loud) and checks things to make sure they aren’t edible. We call him “Helper Dog”.
Laura in LA says
This whole post describes my chihuahua Penelope perfectly! She does all of these same things and even has a “freckle belly” like Burg.
Lindsey says
Those pictures are so precious!! I love the one of him on the pillows!! I can’t wait until we can live in a place that allows pets!
Stephanie says
I love how Clara is thinking about getting in on the action around the :50 sec. mark. She is just too precious. She looks like such a gentle baby and very observant! Very cute!
Alisa says
Sherry! We make that noise when we’re trying to get our dog Wilma to “talk” to us! She goes nuts when we make that noise and she starts making the most hilarious noises in response. So funny. I thought we were the only weirdos ;)
Stephanie B says
Burger has so much personality! I just love him!
Erin says
Great post… I loved everything about it! Clara is so good and so cute! What a great family you have :)
JZB says
This may be my favorite YHL post ever. Can’t decide which is my favorite picture. Love him.

I have a cat who thinks he’s a dog and you have a dog who thinks he’s a cat. I’m pretty sure they’re the same person(?) especially after seeing some of those sleeping positions. My cat Macky also hides under our comforter, though he doesn’t do laps. Maybe he’s more puppy than Burger himself?
Oh, and he’s pushing 18lbs these days. More than twice the size of Burger…whoops.
Katie @ Newcomb Home says
Haha, I was going to say the same thing! I love that Burger has cat-like tendencies because my cat is definitely a dog. He’s 17 lbs, plays fetch and has figured out how to open the front door. Time to get a dead-bolt :)
greenbean says
ha! Burger’s side-eye stare at Clara when she reaches for Divalectible at 0:49 is hilarious!

I love that you went to Seaside after prom! I’m from NJ too and everyone went to Wildwood after. :) Feels like forever ago..
ALison says
Sleeazeside was where my New Jersey class of ’99 went after prom…ahh memories. :-)
Rebecca @ the lil house that could says
Haha we did Seaside after junior prom and Wildwood after senior! All I remember from Wildwood is the “wa-watch the tram car” recording

Holy cow I forgot about that! My mom used to mimic it and it embarrassed the heck outta me when I was younger.

I think our pets switched identities at birth. You have a cat-dog. I have dog-cats. They fetch, they come when called. Oh pets!

Love the crossed paws in the second photo! My cats lay like that all the time.

Jake just happens to be home today sick. I took the laptop into his room so he could read this one..He was sooooo happy! Poor little guy has been so sick the past few days but this cheered him right up! Thanks for the Burger post!

Aw so glad! Tell Jake that Burger gives him a big drooly lick.

About the video above he said (and I quote) “I just don’t think Clara baby appreciates Burger as much as I would”.
How cute is that?
YoungHouseLove says
Hahaha, adorable! It’s true. Burger knows that Jake is his biggest fan.

That just made my day..I expected the dolphin noise to be weird but it just made me like Sherry even more!
Heather says
I’m glad to see we aren’t the only mean ones that fake throw a few times just to watch the dog’s reaction! Our schnauzer Teddy Bear loves a good game of toss, but he’s four times Burger’s size easily and can’t stop his big ole self quickly on our wood floors and often hits walls and furniture when trying to stop and catch lol…
Mindy says
Love this post! Burger and my Howie would get along fabulously! He definitely squeezes in his GTL every day too, between his sleeping under the blankets or on the bed. I think short haired dogs have a sixth sense and it’s seeking out sun spots in the house (even if it’s only a 1 foot by 1 foot area under the dining room table).
As always, Clara is adorable!! Her and Burger make quite the pair :-)
Krysta says
Cute post! I’m sure my dog wishes he was 100 lbs lighter so he could fit in all those fun places. I wonder if he actually thinks about things like that…
Sarah K says
Adorable!

how funny – i have the same computer wallpaper as john. side note, clara is the cutest.

What a great sunny spot to park it- oh the life of a loved Burger.

When my Dad’s dearly departed cat, Purvis, sat with his paws crossed like that, we told him he was dainty and put a string of fake pearls on him. Burger might not like that…. Ethne of http://www.wom-mom.com

OMG – how do you get anything done among such kissables?? I’d be smootching them both all day long! Such sweetness!
Molly W. says
i love the video!! clara seems so happy around burger…she was smiling the whole time…they are both adorable!
Nikki says
I. Love. Burger.
Felicity @ Our Little Beehive says
Too cute. I can’t decide what I like more, Clara’s eagerness to watch Burger, or Sherry’s dolphin mating call. Which, btw, was totally worth waiting for.
Denise says
Burger,Burger,Burger…I have a chihuahua, named Daphne. She has the same actions/reactions as Burger…they could be girl/boy twins. My chi gets real snippy and crabby when it’s past her bedtime…she can be as sweet as pie, but when it comes around 7pm, you as much wiggle a finger in front of her face…she is a ferocious as a lion and scares the living daylights out of everyone. Wondering if Burger ever gets crabby or what he’s like its past his bedtime?
YoungHouseLove says
All day is bedtime for him! Seriously, he’s the most well rested dog ever. So we don’t really know what he’s like when he’s crabby since he’s always taking cat, er, dog naps.

Oh my, this was so cute! I love how Burger and Clara interact. I don’t think they could be any cuter!
Question: How does Burger get up and off the bed now that it is substantially higher?
YoungHouseLove says
We have a bench at the foot of the bed that he uses like a step. Very smart pooch!

Our dog is a cat too! Her favorite thing to do is sit on the window sill. Or really, to hang off the window sill, she is 25 lbs and can’t exactly fit up there.
Liz F. says
Excited dolphin call for the win!
You guys inspire people so much, from your minimal yet warm home design to your DIYism to your thrifting, your dog love, your less is more approach to child rearing (less stuff, not less children), your humor, and the joyfulness with which you go about your life together. Just keeping up with your adventures has affected my life in a positive way, and I know I’m not alone in this.
Regina says
I have a 4 lbs chihuahua who will be NINE years old in August!! He does the exact same things though….lays in the sunny spots, curls up under the blankets, fetches his toys. Even those nails clicking on the hard wood are a very familiar sound to me! Anyway, I just love how Clara smiled sweetly the whole time at Burger. What a cutie pie! I also have an almost 8 month old, so I really loved this post and video. :) Good luck on the projects! I have a few this weekend too!
Paula says
While my husband and I are finishing raising our kids (all boys), you two are just beginning! I agree that a growing family HAS TO have a dog as a member. Yall have the cutest baby and doggie. Love your blog (found you about 4 months ago) and can’t wait to see what you do with the rattan chairs you bought. I have two similar and not sure how to “renew” them. Thanks for sharing!
Jenny @ Bakography says
I can’t get over how happy and adorable Clara is! She is just too cute watching Burger go back and forth while playing fetch. It kinda makes me want to get a dog, maybe even tiny like Burger, so we have one when we have kiddos. Gotta love free entertainment!

You guys are the “picture perfect” family!! You have THE MOST adorable daughter I have eva seen….and Burger is the cutest dog eva!! I look forward every day to see what you guys are up to-(love that you post couple times a day too)!! Thanks for sharing it all!!

Really? Even with my strange dolphin calls you think we’re “picture perfect.” I always refer to us as “weird but happy.” Haha.

I wasn’t sure where to post this (because it’s not related), but I just checked out Clara’s photo for this week, and my first thought (after “awww!,” of course) was “I LOVE that fabric!” and then immediately, “And it even coordinates perfectly with Sue the Napkin!” I hope you’re planning to use it somewhere in the house!
YoungHouseLove says
Seriously! As she posed I was like “hmm, maybe we should use this to recover the bamboo chairs we got from the thrift store. But sadly it’s too thin. Maybe I’ll double up (use something thick and white and then cover it with this fabric). Could be fun!
