How’s that for a title? Haha. We’re about 20% there with this room, but we’re sharing these pics in the name of the work-in-progress reality that is our new house. We definitely think some paint on the walls (we’re flip-flopping between soft gray and mocha) will tie things together and better integrate items like the shower curtain and the bathmat along with the sweet vintage yellow tile. And of course bringing in better art, fun window treatments (maybe a bright roman shade?), changing out the light fixture, and implementing other tweaks down the road will hopefully take it from “meh” to “how you doin’?”
The good news is that it works and it’s clean. You can brush your teeth, take a shower, and use the “facilities” without issue. And thanks to the previous owners’ meticulous housecleaning skillz, there’s not a dot of crud or mildew to be scrubbed. Anyway, enough intro. Here she blows:
That’s right, I folded the toilet paper into a little triangle like they do at hotels. Because I’m crazy.
I apologize for the lack of sweeping see-everything photos, but it’s a tiny room. You can stand in front of the sink and touch all four walls – that’s how small it is. But as for our other little additions, I added a small acrylic trash can to the left of the toilet (you can see it peeking out in that top pic) and we used one of those suction cup shower caddies to store some little sample shampoo & conditioner bottles along with body wash in the shower. We also plopped a mini tube of toothpaste in a cup above the sink.
I thought offering bar soap and liquid soap would please anyone with a strong preference either way, and we hung some “placeholder art” above the toilet (three food related wedding pics – cupcakes, grapes, and lemons – that we already had framed) just to fight the Complete Bare Wall Syndrome that was going on. We figure they’re good for a bathroom because they’re just photos that we reprinted and framed ourselves, so if they get damaged from the moisture over time, we still have the originals and can easily reprint them. Although someday we’d love to hunt down or DIY something that ties into the printed shower curtain and deep teal walls in the adjoined bedroom for a little more pop.
We don’t have much by the way of “countertop” in our tiny bathroom, but we kept the lid of the toilet tank empty so people can drop their toiletry bags there if they’d like (since our sink doesn’t have any lip to speak of). And bringing in some plush white bath towels, hand towels, and washcloths completed the mom-and-Jack-ready makeover. It may not be done but it’s definitely grandparent worthy. Haha. And at least we’re not dealing with this awkward see-your-whole-body-while-sitting-on-the-toilet issue anymore:
Three cheers for a non-reflective door in front of the John. And by John I mean both the commode and my husband. That’s right, it’s a toilet-related double entendre.

I vote grey. If for no other reason that a yellow and brown bathroom is… well, yellow and brown. :)

I remember a while back yall mentioned you use mainly flat paint in your home. I just repainted one of our rooms with flat (had a sweet sale on breath friendly flat paint at Home Depot for $10/gallon!) but didn’t know if yall did your bathrooms flat too. With all the moisture do you guys stick with satin or glossy? Can you do flat in a bathroom? I’m just curious. Great work on the room and bathroom!
YoungHouseLove says
In our old house we did all rooms except for kitchens and bathrooms with flat paint (doors and trim semi-gloss though). In this house we have been using eggshell (for the dark guest room) and satin paint (for the bedroom, living room, hall) for all of the rooms except for the kitchen and bathrooms (which we haven’t painted yet) and it’s not much shinier at all, but they say it’s more durable and kid friendly. We’d never do a bathroom or kitchen anything other than semi-gloss (although we’ve heard some people do eggshell or satin, we have the best luck with semi-gloss). Hope it helps!

Thanks so much for the paint tid bit – I appreciate you taking time to answer that for me. And while I was looking through the comments to find yalls response to my question, I couldn’t help but notice all the comments people leave with their opinions. Bet yall enjoy a handful of laughs each day at how open people are with their ‘suggestions’ :) Always love the upbeat positive responses yall give back too. Very classy. Hope you had a great weekend with family!

Here’s a random question for you: Upon noticing John’s toes in the bathroom pic…(My husband has similar LONG toes) Has John ever tried to interlace them together? It’s a favorite trick in our house, of course mine don’t do it. But my kids think it’s hilarious!!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, I don’t think so but now I’m going to beg him to try! Clara has the same super long toes, so maybe it’ll be a party trick of hers someday!

Nice guys!
I found the same bathmat, but with the mossy color line, and after seeing the type of shower curtain you paired it with, I went back to look for a better option. I’ve never bought more than one at a time to compare, but I think I am sold.
Worked like a charm.
Thanks guys. I love your blog.
OH, and the guest room is so, so cheery!

Ahhh…,my husband mocked my folding of the toilet tissue so I caved and unfolded it. (well, tore it off…I wouldn’t want fold lines on the first square, what kind of greeting is that?!) Your post makes me think I should stand my ground and keep folding the TP and making my dorky self happy. :)

What a cute little bathroom!! I actually really love it! That yellow tile is fab.u.lous! I actually like the paint on the wall from the pics. Not that you are, but if you’re taking votes for a new paint color, I’m voting for soft gray! I think it would be lovely in such a small space and would complement the guest room color well. Plus, gray + vintage yellow = perfection! But, like I said, I like the color as is. Super cute!

Sherry! Love that you folded the toilet paper. But this will knock your mom’s socks off.

Call me crazy…I love that little bathroom about as much as anything in your lovely new house. Thank goodness the tile isn’t pink. Instead it is a unique color I don’t think I’ve ever seen in another bathroom. Charming! (Glad it isn’t scheduled for demo!)
You two never cease to amaze me. You are so creative! It is astounding how you work together so well. Aren’t renovations supposed to split couples up? I’m ridiculously glad you are smarter and tighter than that.
Thanks for giving me ideas to dream about.

Oh, I know how hard it is to take a picture in a teeny room. It looks great! and wowza, is it clean. You guys were lucky that the house was so clean when you moved in. Each of the houses we’ve bought have been SUPER SCUZZY…bleeeeehhhh!

A lavenderish gray would be great! I have a retro-yellow bathroom (the tile is a more brown tone than yours) and we painted it a really pale lavender and it works really well with the yellow tile.

I love, love, love that you are keeping the vintage yellow tile. It adds character to the space. Beautiful job!

I’ve never left a comment before, but I do want to throw my two cents in for your paint colors. Don’t go with Mocha. Brown and yellow in a bathroom are just a bit too . . . um, yeah. Just don’t go there. Pick something a little less . . . toilety!
Other than that, I do love your stuff!

Not sure how I missed the original post of this bathroom on your blog as I read your blog almost daily.
In any case- what IS it with people and putting mirrors across from a toilet? SO creepy. We had the same thing when we bought our house. In any case, you can’t see the toilet in this shot http://tinyurl.com/6zb7syt
but this was our hideous bathroom (prior to demoing it) with mirrors built in to woodwork across from the toilet (don’t mind the miniature towel- this was prior to moving in). We demoed the entire bathroom to rid us of them (and that hideous linoleum that would never fool anyone into think it’s real rock/stone/slate or whatever they were going for). For more amusement- here are some more. It was ONE classy bathroom with a skylight with a custom stick to push it up with, a pink toilet, and more. http://tinyurl.com/66tsnx8

Soft gray vs. Mocha, huh? Not that my two cents has been requested BUT mocha= brown. And brown and yellow in a bathroom might be taking the “theme” more literally than your guests would like. Just sayin’.

I think we have the same sink(s). If you look on the bottom it says “Made in United States of America by American Standard Radiator and Sanitary Louisville” and the date of manufacture.
I have two original baths (and sinks) one peach, one green.
For those of you wondering about storage, I have found that a tall narrow basket intended for magazines is just the right size for holding a few things and sliding under the pipes.
YoungHouseLove says
That’s too funny! I’ll have to go peek under the sink.

Bummer, ours doesn’t say anything under it (no date either) but it’s super rusty and the original (or so it seems) faucet says Kohler.

awh, man! It took me a few years to notice mine. It’s raised lettering so it didn’t show up without me really looking. Maybe they are a different brand.
I think it is so neat. It is honestly what has kept me from ditching them. I love the thought that so many things in my house were made in the USA which is sadly not the case anymore. : (
YoungHouseLove says
It would be really neat to see lettering and especially a date! We love finding old things with the date on them because it just makes them feel that much more authentic!

I personally think its more than Meh :) I have a QUESTION! Does that suction cup thingy really hold up well with bottles in it? I need some more storage like that in my kid’s shower.

Yup, ours seems to stay up well. It’s from Target a while back (I used to use them in college for years at a time). Hope it helps!
