Now that we’re wrapping things up at our current house and we’ve spilled the new house beans it’s like we’ve finally given ourselves permission to LOSE. OUR. MINDS. So yeah, this new house video tour is full of chirpy excitement that only a home in your dream neighborhood can produce. Forgive me. It’s not a good look. And watching it produces the same embarrassment that my way-too-enthusiastic mom elicited back in high school. Which confirms that I’m turning into her. Uh oh…
Woop, there it is. The first set of stairs we ever owned, and the house that’s attached to them.
A few notes:
- I’m not awkward at all in the beginning.
- We used John’s phone to “time stamp” this video thanks to Googling “today’s date” on Friday when we filmed it. We’re nothing if not high tech around here.
- Drinking game: count how many times I say love.
- Keep an eye out for John’s finger coming into frame to tell me which direction to walk (yes, he holds the camera and I walk next to him to chat since his description of the house would be three sentences mixed with long silences and if I held the camera you’d lose your lunch).
- Sorry about the audio getting odd in a few areas (empty rooms have weird echoes and it turns out the bathroom fan upstairs is crazy loud on film).
- I sing about stairs. My life is officially a musical.
- Ahhhhhhh! I can’t think of any more. Did I mention we’re crazy excited?!
Oh and please bear with us when it comes to questions about our plans and the ol’ to do list that we’re compiling. We promise we’ll whip up a floor plan post and share our new masterlist with all of our To-Dos on it as soon as we have those laid out (we’re still in that changing-our-minds-every-second phase). It might be a little while before we’ve fully segued into the full new house mindset since we still live in our current house and definitely have a lot of stuff on our plates with selling it, getting packed up, and moving.
And now, I’ll end this with a completely understated “AHHHHHHHHHHH!” and another big wet kiss for you guys. So excited to share this next chapter with you. Also if you’re my mom and you’re reading this, I’m not that scared of turning into you. Except that none of my shoes will fit anymore…
Tasneem says
Wonderful house! : ) Thanks for sharing.
I am looking forward to seeing the outside too in the coming months. What I have always loved about all your homes is how spacious your lots are. Here is the Los Angeles area, $600K – $700K will barely get you a ~6,000 sq total lot size, and that’s if your lucky! Im so used to how squished things are around here. So refreshing to see all the greenery and large back/front yards! : )
Ally says
Awww, soooo lovely, Petersiks! Will be wonderful to see how your new dream home evolves over time :)
(I think I’m most impressed by the fact that your “cameraman” didn’t make any quips or comments during filming! :)

SO excited for the two of you and Clara!! The house looks awesome and I can only imagine the magic you and John will do with it!!Did you sell the old house?
I grew up with slate in the foyer EACTLY like what is in your new foyer. I remember when I was little I loved it in the summer because it was so cool on the bottom of my feet!!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw that’s cool about the slate! And as for if we sold the house, we’re trying! Haha! We’ll share a post all about it when we do :)

So incredibly excited for your family! And to be honest there’s a lot of my own selfish excitement thrown in there as I think about all the projects you’ll be highlighting… and if I’m really being honest I’m extra super excited because we close on our “forever home” next week which is in need of a lot of love and we’re trying to sell our current home at the same time so you’re kind of my shared stress/excitement buddy in a totally non weird even though I don’t actually know you way… so what I’m trying to say is YAY! and CONGRATS!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Sarah! And congrats on your dream house!

So exciting! thank you for sharing the video with us!
Was there another room on the left going to the laundry area?
Btw, im getting your book on the mail soon!!! I cant wait!!
YoungHouseLove says
That doorway on the left while walking towards the laundry room was Clara’s room. There’s also a door on the right that you don’t really see that leads to the stairs to the attic :)

Can I just say that I am so impressed with the fact that you can talk while John video’s?! That’s impressive! I think I’d get all out of sync if I tried to do that with someone!! CONGRATS on you new house! I love so much about it and am SO excited to see it all transformed by you two :)
Jessica says
Our first house had red brick laminant. We quickly covered it with wood. Love the house.
Tiffany says
Lovely video! <3
Meredith Jones says
How exciting! Can’t even wait to see all the awesome and fun new stuff you do to every inch! :D
Casandra says
I watched the video with my 8-month old on my lap – I thought I’d have to entertain him from getting bored. But he was going crazy over hearing your voice! It was very cute – flapping his arms and babbling like crazy. I think he thought you two had a very deep conversation/connection. So yes, you’re his new soulmate. Just thought you’d enjoy that visual. :)
YoungHouseLove says
Hahahahaha! I love it!

Autumn Beach says
Oh my gosh…I CAN. NOT. WAIT. to witness all of the fabulous transformations! This house is delightfully ugly (only interior-wise)…the tackier, the better! It will only make for an even more amazing “after”. Sherry, I couldn’t help but smile while watching this video…your excitement is contagious. Congratulations once again. This is going to be FUN!

Aw thanks Autumn!

The style & layout remind me a lot of many friends’ houses as a kid. Really looking forward to seeing what you do with it!!
Hannah says
I have an irking feeling that the time stamp is photoshopped. After Listy McListerson +1000s of other countless, blatant lies, I’m doubting the transparency of this site.
YoungHouseLove says
I don’t know what to tell you other than that we don’t have any program that can photoshop a video, but if you’re dead set on calling us liars because we didn’t share the new house info earlier, I will never be able to convince you of anything else. The day we revealed that we bought the house, people used public records to look up the address within minutes, so we’re 100% sure that not “over-sharing” in the case of our new home’s safety was the right choice (now the alarm is in and we can rest easier). It’s a hard balance to try to please everyone (some people thought we shared too much about potty training yet not enough about the new house) so we’ve learned that we just can’t win ’em all.
xo,
s
Tanya says
Hannah, seriously even if the time stamp WAS photoshopped, why do you care? The sun will still rise tomorrow.
Jill says
My goodness, Hannah. Who cares? The Petersiks share so much about themselves, including the fact that they didn’t share certain facts sooner. They are, like, transparent to a fault, and it’s what makes their blog such a pleasure to read and makes us all feel like such friends to them even though we’ve never met them.
I wouldn’t share my last name on a blog on the Internet, and my sister won’t let me post photos of my nephew (her son) on Facebook (which is just the hardest thing ever for me to keep to, as you can imagine). Most people are very, very guarded about their privacy and their safety just in case.
I don’t believe they’ve ever lied to us. They simply don’t tell us things till they’re ready, and for heaven’s sake, that is more than okay.
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks so much Jill! We truly never expected anyone to care that we closed on a house earlier! We figured you guys would be sad if we secretly redid the whole thing without blogging about it, haha, but not if we just grabbed the keys and put it on hold until we were able to get in there and start working :)

xanthe says
I don’t understand how anyone can be annoyed that you didn’t announce the new house sooner. Safety people!!!! I can’t imagine how unsettling it must have been for loads of people to have found out about your current house address just as you moved in. Love the layout of your new house and your excited enthusiasm is infectious! X
Abby says
I know you said it wasn’t smellivision, but I could practically smell the sunroom carpet and wished I could wish it all away for you! :) (Too many experiences with dingy carpets…) I really liked the stencilling you did in your first house and I’m curious to see what you’ll do with the flooring in your new sunroom one day. Here’s to fresh, clean smells and fun, new starts!
Kelly says
So excited!! The enclosed patio reminds me of your 1st house, just bigger. Can not WAIT to see what you guys do with this house. Yay!!!
Cynthia says
What a great house to work with! Do all houses in your area have sunrooms? That is not something I see much here in Seattle.
About your stairs and your plans to remove the carpet…just wanted to share something that I had to learn twice (I’m a slow learner): uncarpeted wood stairs are VERY slippery, especially for people wearing socks. I highly recommend AGAINST it. I slipped on mine while wearing socks and broke my tailbone, and because that wasn’t bad enough, our sock-clad toddler later fell down them too. (No injuries thankfully, but THAT was enough to make us install a carpet runner…)
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks for the stair tip! We definitely will do something to keep them from being slick! And as for sunrooms they seem really common here in Richmond, although I had never heard of them before we moved here :)
xo,
s
Sally says
I agree they are slippery, but we dealt with this by not walking around sock-footed. Our stairs were fine if you were barefoot or in shoes/slippers. And hardwood stairs are so much easier to clean!
YoungHouseLove says
Love the tips guys!

I can see why you loved it, that house definitely has potential. And what we can see of the outsides looks great too (I like ‘the house in the woods’ vibe with all those trees).
Thanks for the tour!

I am so excited after watching this! For some reason this house just seems so so so cozy and homey. I hope you guys stay here a long time :)

Even a simple paint job alone will transform the new place! Can’t wait to see what you do with it (esp the master bathroom!!)
Amanda L says
I just have to say I love the blue hexagon tile in the master bath! I know it might be outdated, but I think it could be awesome if you update around it. :)
YoungHouseLove says
I love it too! Sadly it’s cracked and damaged in a few areas, and there’s not enough to do the full bathroom if we reconfigure it, but it’s totally going to be my inspiration!

Great house guys! I honestly didn’t notice the awkwardness at all, so don’t sweat it. Your excitement came across and rightly so! I’m happy for you! I’m surprised that you haven’t done anything yet, not that you had time, but sometimes I wonder when you two sleep because you get so much accomplished. Wow, that’s a whole lot of wallpaper. Instead of the usual painting party, I’m thinking you need to recruit loved ones for a wallpaper removing party. All the best! Can’t wait to share in your new adventure!
Lisa E says
Wow, just hit submit comment and it disappeared so hopefully it won’t post twice. This is a great house and I’m so happy for you! Again, congrats! I am surprised that you haven’t done anything to it yet, not that you have had the time. I sometimes wonder when you two sleep as you seem to get so much accomplished! I think you should have a wallpaper removing party because there is certainly so much of that to tackle, ;) . Best wishes and I can’t wait to share in this adventure through your posts!!

I wasn’t sure, but does this house have stairs?? Haha, just teasing. Congrats on your dream home!
Julie says
Ahahaha a wet bar! My dad has one in his house and I can’t think of the last time anyone used the sink. It’s even got glass shelves filled with breakable shot glasses that my dad collects. It was a game of “don’t break anything!” when my sister or I had to dust them. lol
I can’t wait to see what ideas you two come up with for the house.
Karen hornsten says
Let’s settle this once and for all! NO BASEMENT! I am reading this on my ipad at 4 a.m. and the words ‘bones’ and ‘basement’ are standing out in my mind. I live vicariously through you all and your adventures. I am a grandma of 13, and live in a tiny house with few windows, and fewer possibilities, now on our daughter’s property in California. We raised our kids in Minnesota in a grand house on the Mississippi River and would have loved to have had you guys around then to give me advice. Right now you make me smile and remember the good ole days. Stay happy and committed to your dreams.

Great house! I can’t wait to see what you guys do with it! Seeing the den must have been déjà vu! Love it! Thanks for sharing.

I can’t wait to watch you guys transform this place. My fiance and I are searching for our first home and it will most likely be a fixer upper.. he says it’s the budget, I say it’s because I want to DIY!!!! We’ll be tagging along for inspiration :)
Kim says
Maybe this has already been mentioned, but I just couldn’t read ALL of the comments. Do the wood floors and stairs before you move in!! It is so messy once you move in and you will be dusting the rest of your life even with a wetvac connected to your sander.
You will kiss yourself later for doing it first.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, we learned that lesson after redoing them in our first house while we lived there (and never getting to it in our current house since it was such a pain the first time! Haha!).

WOWEEE! Lots and lots of blue trim! I can’t wait to see what you two creative kids will do with it. It’s really a great house though, nice large rooms and windows, big kitchen, lots to love! (and paint).
Lilli says
This is so exciting! Can’t wait to see how you guys transform this beauty.
Teresa says
I can’t wait to see the transformation.
Jean says
I don’t know how you resisted ripping those curtains down on the first floor. Yowza, they’re dated! I’m excited to see what you do with the place!
Amanda says
This layout is so, so similar to the house I grew up in. Big “awwwww” for 1970’s/1980’s colonial-style homes! Not that I haven’t loved seeing what you’ve done with the last two houses, but because of it being like my old house, I’ve already got warm fuzzies and can’t wait to see what you’ve got planned!
Natalie says
As someone who just finished painting the trim white in our house, I was cringing looking at all that blue trim. I know you’ve done it before, but I that didn’t stop me from feeling bad for you guys! Can’t wait to see what you guys do in the new place.
Colette says
What great potential! I especially love all that natural light, which is something my house needs more of, so I am quite envious.
Brooke says
Look at all that wood trim!!! There’s a whole ‘Merica out there with wood trim – rock it!
Brooke says
And OMG – you are going to LOVE having a desk in the kitchen. My last house had one and I miss it so much. Great place to monitor the kids while they’re doing homework or surfing the web.
Jyl says
Wooo! So much potential! I think your previous owners were reading the same decorating magazines as our previous owners. What is up with the blue and pink trim?! You’ve got your work cut out for you, Sherry “The Paintbrush” Petersik! Congratulations! It’s going to be amazing!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, thanks Jyl! Better do some wrist stretches to get ready…

I have a stair parts company in Oklahoma so I am excited to see what you do with the stairs in this new home. (This is not spam, I am an avid reader and made sure not to mention company name or anything) – I really enjoy the site. Will be sad to see the wet bar go. :)
Julia says
I think what speaks volumes about your video is how layout of square footage makes a huge difference in the feel. From the pictures of your current house, the feeling isn’t “smaller,” per se, but it’s hard to believe that these houses are the same square footage. When Charlie and I were looking at houses, we looked at one that was 200sq/ft less than what we settled on, but felt SO MUCH SMALLER because some rooms were too big, others were too small, and the flow between the rooms was “off.”
I’m so excited about your new adventure, and can’t wait to see the progress you make. It’s a huge inspiration for Charlie and I!
YoungHouseLove says
The funny thing is that some comments have been “your current house feels so much bigger than your new house” and others have been “the new house feels so much larger!” – isn’t that interesting?!
