Now that we’re wrapping things up at our current house and we’ve spilled the new house beans it’s like we’ve finally given ourselves permission to LOSE. OUR. MINDS. So yeah, this new house video tour is full of chirpy excitement that only a home in your dream neighborhood can produce. Forgive me. It’s not a good look. And watching it produces the same embarrassment that my way-too-enthusiastic mom elicited back in high school. Which confirms that I’m turning into her. Uh oh…
Woop, there it is. The first set of stairs we ever owned, and the house that’s attached to them.
A few notes:
- I’m not awkward at all in the beginning.
- We used John’s phone to “time stamp” this video thanks to Googling “today’s date” on Friday when we filmed it. We’re nothing if not high tech around here.
- Drinking game: count how many times I say love.
- Keep an eye out for John’s finger coming into frame to tell me which direction to walk (yes, he holds the camera and I walk next to him to chat since his description of the house would be three sentences mixed with long silences and if I held the camera you’d lose your lunch).
- Sorry about the audio getting odd in a few areas (empty rooms have weird echoes and it turns out the bathroom fan upstairs is crazy loud on film).
- I sing about stairs. My life is officially a musical.
- Ahhhhhhh! I can’t think of any more. Did I mention we’re crazy excited?!
Oh and please bear with us when it comes to questions about our plans and the ol’ to do list that we’re compiling. We promise we’ll whip up a floor plan post and share our new masterlist with all of our To-Dos on it as soon as we have those laid out (we’re still in that changing-our-minds-every-second phase). It might be a little while before we’ve fully segued into the full new house mindset since we still live in our current house and definitely have a lot of stuff on our plates with selling it, getting packed up, and moving.
And now, I’ll end this with a completely understated “AHHHHHHHHHHH!” and another big wet kiss for you guys. So excited to share this next chapter with you. Also if you’re my mom and you’re reading this, I’m not that scared of turning into you. Except that none of my shoes will fit anymore…
Phoebe Koehler says
I watched this video, got super pumped for y’all, and immediately started stalking Zillow for my own new house! You’re terrible/wonderful influences. Can’t wait to see the next step!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, be careful! You never know when The One will strike!

Just a heads up that we got from our realtor, check out realtor.com for the most up to date info. Apparently websites like zillow (which I had been using) don’t update as quickly when houses sell, so we managed to get our hearts set on one that had just accepted an offer :(.
YoungHouseLove says
That’s a great tip!

Christine says
You guys are too cute!! Love the video & the new house! I’m so excited to check back and see what you create!
Jennifer says
So many cool spaces in this house! I really can’t wait to see what you’ll do here, where do you think you’ll start?
YoungHouseLove says
The nasty carpeting has got to go!

Cassie says
Oh my! So exciting!
How would you rate this against your other two homes’ “befores”? Ignoring the relative sizes of the your first home vs. your current and your new home, which do you think needed the most work?
YoungHouseLove says
In our first house we gutted the bathroom and the kitchen as well as removing wallpaper, converting a dining room into a bedroom, etc (in other words it needed a lot of work). Our current home was more of a blank slate (no wallpaper, three bathrooms that could just be upgraded instead of gutted, a kitchen that we redid while using the existing cabinets, etc). Meanwhile our new house is a lot more of a fixer upper like our first house (all of the bathrooms need a full overhaul due to damaged tile, wallpaper everywhere, etc) and it feels like the most long-term possibility for our family, so we’re looking forward to taking our time and really making thoughtful decisions that could work for decades if we stayed here that long :)

Sarah in Florida says
I am going to be completely honest……I am super bummed that you are leaving house #2 as it has been a great source of inspiration to my own home. However, I am very excited to see what becomes of all that blue trim (what the?!?!), beige carpet, fake brick linoleum, dark wood and let us not forget the forest behind the house you didn’t even really touch on. I look forward to seeing how you take on #3 as I seem to still be tackling the never ending, always growing and changing, pages long list around my own house. Prior to move in, is there one room in particular you are going to direct your attention to first?
YoungHouseLove says
I think the stained and holey carpet has to go, so we hope to dive into getting that up before we move in! We also would love to spray some of the blue trim white and maybe even peel wallpaper in the meantime :)

Emily says
Congrats and it looks amazing! Our next home will be a fixer-upper too, and there is so much excitement in that! :)
Mercedes says
Oh, how exciting! I can’t wait to see what you guys have in store for that house!!
Oh, and now I want to go out and buy a new house to fix up too!! I’ll have to live vicariously through your blog for now though. :-)
Jenny Sara says
Ahhh! That’s so exciting! We were ridiculously excited when we bought a house with stairs, too…I so get it. Congratulations!!
Melissa Busby says
Love love love this house! Great floorplan and so much potential! Can’t wait to see what yall do with it!
Ayisha says
Its so funny. I started following your blog before we bought our house. I looked and looked for a ranch like your current house and just could not find it here in the Detroit suburbs. I settled on a two story colonial and it drove me nuts that I faced so many 2nd story challenges. Fast forward and now you guys have the same house that I have. Its almost identical but we have a basement and it was built in 1966. I can’t wait to see how you change this house and tackle the challenges of this style of house. Im so happy for you guys. As much as I love our house, our next one will be a ranch with a walk out basement.
YoungHouseLove says
That’s so funny Ayisha!

Summer says
The house is wonderful!! So happy for you guys! But question.. is there an intercom throughout the house??
YoungHouseLove says
Yes, it’s one of those old intercoms from the 80s but it’s broken! Although we can sometimes get the radio to work intermittently. Haha!

Susan M says
Have you thought about keeping the door to the room with the toilet in the master bath, instead of making it all 1 big bathroom with the sinks and tub? We have a separate “room” in our master bath, and I can’t imagine having just 1 big bathroom ever again.
YoungHouseLove says
We have thought about it (and have a door between the sink and the tub/toilet in our current house) but just prefer one big room I think :)

Kate says
Wow, so exciting! I am eagerly waiting to see the fabulousness that you guys come up with. Sherry, you are SO cute on video. It would be fun to see videos more often. Best of luck renovating the new house.
Kia says
Ahhhh! Amazing! I have serious house envy right now and I CANNOT WAIT for you all to give your new place the Young Love treatment! Congrats!
maddy says
I think it’s weird people are upset about you guys not sharing about the house sooner…i kind of wish i didn’t know because i’m just so excited to see some before and afters!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, thanks Maddy! We’ve just learned that everyone wants something different from our site and it’s hard to give everyone everything, so we just share things as they make sense for our family (some personal things we never share, and some things we share the second they happen). It’s kind of the deal with being a blogger, you just have to choose what to talk about and know that some folks will want more, some will want less, and some folks will want something else entirely :)

Lisa Reed says
I honestly love it! Great house, awesome setting… The upstairs windows seem to make you feel that your in a treehouse! Can’t wait to see how it all comes together, congratulations!
Genevieve says
Love it! You’re so lucky to have such a beautiful large house. I live in Newport Beach, CA in a tiny apartmnet, which I also love, but it just doesn’t compare. I guess its a trade off for the location, but man does this make me a little green with envy! :)
Jenn says
Oh. My. Gosh. This looks so similar to my parents house and a bunch of other houses in our area in Yorktown, Va, and my friend’s parents house in Colonial Heights. So nice to see things that so much remind me of home! I cannot wait to see what you guys do with the house. My parents had similar awful wallpaper, bad carpet and weird paint combos and I still remember all-family, all-night wallpaper removal parties.
We’re closing on our first house on Thursday and I’ll be removing some insane wallpaper and glittery popcorn ceilings of my own. I’ll be living on your blog for ideas and inspiration for sure!
Robyn says
Gosh I love this house! It’ll be absolutely amazing once you guys have put your stamp on it! I’m even kind of digging the trim! ;-)
K says
I can’t wait to see what you guys do with this place – so much potential! And you both have such good taste and so much talent. :)
Michelle DuPuis says
The entrance is super cute. I love the windows! Can’t wait to see which room you start with. :-)
Becca Moss says
I LOVE IT! I’m so so excited for you guys to get started making it into your home. And, I’m stoked to see what all you do with the rooms! Yayyyyyy!
Laurie says
I love the 80s color scheme of colonial blue and mauve. You get extra points if there is a goose with a flowing ribbon around its neck somewhere in the house.
Seriously though, great bones on that house. It is going to be stunning when you finish with it. Can’t wait to see all the things you do. Especially the garage. Finish the garage, OK? I’ve been waffling about the shelving storage system I should use in my garage and you guys do a great job researching and comparing.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, it’s like a scavenger hunt! I have to go find the goose no! And as for finishing the garage, I think that’s John’s idea of a good time. Haha!

Debbie Smith says
Oooohhh, I’m so ecstatically thrilled for you!! Happy, happy, happy!! May you continue to be blessed in this home and in your wonderful lives together!
Sarah says
I am surprised by the lack of storage closets. Is that normal in Virginia? In TX we at least have one closet off some hallway for linens, etc. Sometimes more than one.
YoungHouseLove says
We have a closet in the hallway upstairs off of the master as well as a linen closet in the bathroom and two storage closets in the foyer downstairs. Other than that each bedroom has a closet, we have a kitchen pantry, and there’s a walk-up storage attic – so I hope we’ll be all set :)

Wow, I wish you two could renovate our 5-story townhouse in Richmond. We need some young blooded energy to get it done. This is our life project. Terrific you are “moving on up” into the home of your dreams. It was great to be young, healthy and energetic once. Blessings to you three…
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks so much Lynda!

You know, I totally love the fishbowl aspect of the sunroom. It’s just as near as possible to being outside even if the weather’s foul or the wind is terrible or mosquitos are out or something.
Such a luxurious deck/sunroom! That really makes the house for me. But in general, the layout inside and all the windows is so, so great, and I am so happy for you guys!
My only suggestion would be to get the floors settled now (carpets removed, hardwoods laid/refinished) before you move in because it’ll never be easier to do than it is now when the whole house is empty of furniture.
How did you ever manage to sit on such exciting news for so long?! I can’t wait more than a week to give people their birthday presents.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh my gosh it was nearly impossible for me! I’m someone who makes some weird face when I know a secret and ten minutes later John’s like “ok, what’s that face for” and it’s out! Haha! We really just mentally wouldn’t even let ourselves go there (we were touring and doing current house stuff and had the holidays with family and stuff to keep us busy, so that helped!). But once we spilled the beans our brains went crazy because we finally let ourselves think about it! Haha!

Oh, what a great house! I am so excited for you guys. What a perfect layout, great windows, all around peach of a place.
Keeley @ My Life on a Plate says
I can hear the excitement in Sherry’s voice! Congratulations on your new home. My husband and I just signed a contract on our second home and we’re also very, very excited. It’s not really a fixer upper, though… we’re not as handy as you guys! I really enjoy your blog.
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Keeley! All the best with your new house!

Kaija says
What a great house! I’m guessing you’re going to keep those kitchen cabinets? They look really nice all-wood cabinets. Making them over will be so much fun! I’ll come help with the sanding, ok? :)
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, thanks Kaija! Sadly in a few areas (like around the desk, under the sink) they’re damaged (dinged, dented, splintering, etc) so we’ll have to see what we can do :)

I take a little break from your blog for a couple weeks and when I come back I find “BAM! New house.”
I love it.
I was noticing that blog content was slowing down to more craft projects/organizing and I was wondering why you weren’t tackling a bathroom makeover or anything big. Now I know!
Your new house is gorgeous, that office spot will be perfect, I love the deck, and I am excited at what is to come.
May I ask, will you take any unexpected design choices ala The Novagratz? (You never know what they will do and I LOVE them for that). Or will you stick with more of a similar style from the last two houses?
YoungHouseLove says
I think our first house and our second house are pretty different if you look at the House Tour pages for them, and since the new house is a different style we think it’ll be even more different and can’t wait to see where we end up! I think we just tend to evolve as we go. Ahhh, can’t wait! :)
xo
s
tjack432 says
Ah, yes for sure, your first and second houses were different. The first I would describe as kind of beachy chic and the second more playful suburban? But they were still along the same design aesthetic.
But what I meant by unexpected is something completely out of left field like red kitchen cabinets or even a completely different design choice for a room (like Asian [think Korean hanok design] or Scandinavian inspired). Something way way different.
You went out of your comfort zone for the second house (open shelving/penny tile) so I’m sure you will step even further out for this house. Looking forward to what y’all decide on.
YoungHouseLove says
Yes, I have no idea where we’ll end up, but I can’t wait to see where it takes us!

No pressure or anything but y’all need to get to work. ;)
My hubby and I (and our 3 kiddos 3 and under!) are closing on your new houses’s cousin here in MI on Monday (seriously, it has a very similar layout!) and I need some decor inspiration!!
YoungHouseLove says
Hahah! Good luck with everything Erin!

Congratulations on the new house!! I have to say, it looks like A LOT of work, and would scare the HECK out of me to take on something like this, but I know you guys will give this home a ton of love and it will end up looking amazing! And PS, I am obsessed with the deck! It looks HUGE!!
Claire @ Claire K Creations says
Like it? I love it!
We’re house hunting at the moment and it’s so nice to see something that clearly needs a lot of love and hear your ideas for it. Gives me a much more open mind. Oh how I’d love for us to find a house soon and maybe follow along with you! I wish there were more houses like this in Australia. I’m desperate for a house with the kitchen on the bottom floor (or one story) but would you believe it’s really hard to find?!
Love the video. Oh dear now I’m saying love too much!
Can I just say… going back down the stairs was a bit like being on a roller coaster. I felt like I should hold onto my chair!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, thanks Claire! Hope you find your Aussie dream house soon!

You guys have your work cut out for you! Though I must say, you’ve made me see the hidden potential I fixer-upper houses. Our current house had a lot of “special 80’s touches” (to put it nicely) when we moved in, but I just keep telling myself, “Look what Sherry and John can do!” And keep pushing through. I’m so excited to watch this house transform!

Congratulations! Your new house is awesome, with so much potential. I love all the mature trees, deck, sunroom – so beautiful and peaceful. Oh, and the inside will be so much fun to renovate too! Looking forward to seeing the transformation.

I wish I had HALF the vision you guys have! Beautiful job on both houses! Looking forward to seeing what this next home has in store! My husband, an artist, has ZERO patience for fixing up a house. I feel like I live in a bachelor pad combined with a zoo and a preschool. We have 4 kids, 2 cats and a dog… and in 13 years of marriage, NOTHING in our house is finished and pretty. I’ll be escaping to your blog often!

will your decorating style change with this house? Are you going to keep things fresh and modern or go for a more neutral classy look? Im curious if you will have board and batten walls, the rug under karl, and overall “young” feel?
YoungHouseLove says
I definitely think it’ll feel like us, but we look back at our first house and our current one and see how much we have evolved so I’m sure with a new style of house in the mix we’ll keep changing and it’ll be fun to see where we end up!

This is so much like my house growing up in Richmond. I loved that house, picked my room because of the closet and it was the exact same as Clara’s, with the slanted ceiling, loved it in there! So many good good times, enjoy!

I have the same intercom system! Planning to remove it (had radio and burglar alarm wired in) because everything is wireless now. What about you?
YoungHouseLove says
Yeah it’s mostly broken and very old looking so we’re definitely not going to keep it but we’re not sure what we’ll do with the spots where it once was. Will definitely keep you posted as we go though!

I love the house! I do have a suggestion for the sun room if you like the carpet but just not the smell. Spray it with a solution of 50% cheep vodka and 50% water and let it sit until it dries on its own. The alcohol will “eat” the bacteria/mold that causes the smell and there are no added chemicals or fragrances like there would be with Frebreeze. I shared this with a friend a couple of years ago whose dog had become incontinent and she didn’t have to replace her carpet.
YoungHouseLove says
Never heard that!

Sherry, I love your excitement!
Do you have old hardwoods under the upstairs carpet that you can refinish before moving in (do it! do it!)
Also, your dining room totally reminds me of my first house…same built-ins, same color scheme, but our wallpaper was under the chair rail!
YoungHouseLove says
I wish! It’s just plywood up there. But we definitely want to get it taken care of before we move in :)
