Now that we’re wrapping things up at our current house and we’ve spilled the new house beans it’s like we’ve finally given ourselves permission to LOSE. OUR. MINDS. So yeah, this new house video tour is full of chirpy excitement that only a home in your dream neighborhood can produce. Forgive me. It’s not a good look. And watching it produces the same embarrassment that my way-too-enthusiastic mom elicited back in high school. Which confirms that I’m turning into her. Uh oh…
Woop, there it is. The first set of stairs we ever owned, and the house that’s attached to them.
A few notes:
- I’m not awkward at all in the beginning.
- We used John’s phone to “time stamp” this video thanks to Googling “today’s date” on Friday when we filmed it. We’re nothing if not high tech around here.
- Drinking game: count how many times I say love.
- Keep an eye out for John’s finger coming into frame to tell me which direction to walk (yes, he holds the camera and I walk next to him to chat since his description of the house would be three sentences mixed with long silences and if I held the camera you’d lose your lunch).
- Sorry about the audio getting odd in a few areas (empty rooms have weird echoes and it turns out the bathroom fan upstairs is crazy loud on film).
- I sing about stairs. My life is officially a musical.
- Ahhhhhhh! I can’t think of any more. Did I mention we’re crazy excited?!
Oh and please bear with us when it comes to questions about our plans and the ol’ to do list that we’re compiling. We promise we’ll whip up a floor plan post and share our new masterlist with all of our To-Dos on it as soon as we have those laid out (we’re still in that changing-our-minds-every-second phase). It might be a little while before we’ve fully segued into the full new house mindset since we still live in our current house and definitely have a lot of stuff on our plates with selling it, getting packed up, and moving.
And now, I’ll end this with a completely understated “AHHHHHHHHHHH!” and another big wet kiss for you guys. So excited to share this next chapter with you. Also if you’re my mom and you’re reading this, I’m not that scared of turning into you. Except that none of my shoes will fit anymore…
Meg says
I love how excited you are for stairs! My husband and I just moved and got our first set of stairs since we had both lived with our parents in high school (we are 30 and 31) – I echo your excitement!!
I’m sure you have 1000 other people asking, but how is the sale process for your current house coming along? Do you have fans of the blog and book come by just to see it in person? I can’t wait to find out if the new owner follows you guys :) Exciting…if only we lived in VA rather than Chicago, we would so want to buy your old house!
Congrats again!!!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Meg! We’re working towards a sale and can’t wait to share the whole process with you guys!

For Serious. I have 20 of your blog posts piled up in my blog reader, and this is the random one I chose to read. You sure do miss a lot in 20 posts… and even though (or maybe because?) I am a Realtor, I get super excited when people fall in love with houses!

Aw thanks Kelly!

Hi there. Congratulations!! This is exciting. Not asking for a reveal of info or anything, but I am curious about whether you’ll stick with open cabinets in the kitchen this time around. Your current house gave me the courage to want to try it, but I’m wondering if, going forward, you might opt for upper cabinets instead. Our kitchen remodel is a ways off (5+ years since we have no skillz), but it’s never too soon to start thinking about it. Just curious if you now have a preference—the good, the bad of open shelves versus upper cabinets. – Julie
YoungHouseLove says
We’re obsessed with open shelving! It makes setting the table and unloading the dishwasher so easy! I hope hope hope that we can work it into the new kitchen, even though we’ll probably live with it as-is for around a year to see what we end up liking, and what else we want to change :)

I’m so excited for y’all! I can’t wait to see how you guys transfer all your current furniture/decor into this new space.

You guys need your own show on HGTV!

Katie,
I totally agree with you!

I just bought my first house last year and it was built in 1978 and barely touched since. I see a lot of similarities to your new house. I have the same tile in my entry way. Most of the wood in the house was stained, so I’ve been priming and painting all the doors, all the trim and a big paneled wall. A couple of rooms had the trim painted cream, but you can see in spots where it used to be the same exact blue as all your trim. :p
My bathroom has baby blue sinks, toilet and tub/shower. The whole house was wallpapered at one point too, but luckily only one room was left for us to strip. Still, I’ve found bits of wallpaper sticking out of window trim and behind a toilet we replaced. So much work to do!
Good luck with your new project!
Michelle says
You guys must be nuts! haha another house and it looks massive! Seems like just yesterday you started on the last house. I can’t believe all you accomplished in just a couple short years and with a kid!
I have an old house that I bought just over a year ago and slowly making my way through each room but compared to what you guys accomplished I feel like I have done nothing in the last year! Your site is truly an inspiration and I look forward to seeing what else you guys get up to…
Now I better get moving on my place!
Julianne says
The house looks like it has amazing potential for you guys. I can’t wait to see what you do with the nooks and special little spaces! I can’t believe you’ve owned it for 6 months and haven’t gone totally insane with thinking about what you want to do with it!
Justine says
I was so shocked when I read the post about your new house! Not sad, but shocked. And also excited to see the changes you make, because holy cow, that is a fixer upper!
Travis Potts says
Hey guys,
You’re pretty daring in taking on such a huge project, I’m sure plenty of people would be heading for the hills after seeing the blue trim, wallpapered light switch and the amount of paneling.. As for the kitchen, are you going to keep the peninsula or rip it out and have a large island that you can eat at, or Clara can be doing her thing on one side while you guys cook? (I think you’ve mentioned that John does a lot of the cooking?)Also, I’d love to go completely open plan and have the kitchen, breakfast room and living room all one open space, but that would probably mean removing a lot of load bearing walls and you mentioned you wanted to keep some of the built ins for storage. Like everyone says, can’t wait to see how you guys make it your own!
On a side note, I dreamt that I was moving into a small cottage-y house overlooking a park, and I had all these major renovation ideas and was in the process of moving everything in, and then I woke up.. Can you imagine how cheated I felt!!!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw man, I hate when I wake up at the good part! And as for the kitchen plans, we have no idea! We usually live somewhere for about a year before those became clear to us (that’s how we got to a peninsula for our current house after debating an island or a banquette – and it’s how we realized we could close a doorway in our first house and gain an entire extra wall of cabinets and counters). Living with something while you “process” how you use a room definitely is our favorite method :)

Ahhhh, congratulations on your new house!! I am in LOVE. That’s my dream house! A beautiful brick Colonial with lots of ‘charm’ that you can make into your own? Love love love! We are thisclose to closing on our first home, in fact (a ranch, ironically!) and I have been scouring your blog daily for DIY projects to update ours! Thanks for taking us into your homes – you guys are the best :)
Molly says
Hehe, I just showed this video to my husband (we are talking about moving from our ranch to a house with stairs in the semi-near future) and I totally forgot – whenever he isn’t sure of what a color is called, he calls it Mauve. It’s his default description of any color. So when you said the trim was Mauve he said “I like this girl” … stamp of approval :)
Dawn says
I know I’m late to comment on this one, but I have to say that Sherry’s excitement is adorable! I’ve got a video or two of myself sounding the same way about a house. ;)
I love your idea about creating a double sink in the master bath! I think it will make the space look twice as large!
And that blue trim takes me back to my childhood when my Mom was in her “country” decor phase (think 1985). Thankfully, she kept the trim white, but we had more than one room painted that same shade of blue.
Kate says
I don’t know if anyone has said this yet, but your new house reminds me in some ways of this one
https://www.younghouselove.com/2012/07/house-crashing-where-soft-meets-bold/
that you house crashed in ATL. Or at least it could once ya’ll get working on it.
Congrats! Very excited to see what you do with this new ADVENTURE!

Aw, we loved that house!

Soooooo you mentioned a nursery in addition to Clara’s room… does that mean you guys are gonna try to expand the fam? I ask because in Clara’s birth story you had mentioned that it was a very intense event and it made you not so flippant about going for a second. Either way, I’m really excite for you and your family and this amazing transition!
YoungHouseLove says
Yes, we definitely would love to have another child someday!

This is a late comment but I just can’t get enough of your new house! I was clicking around and saw an old photo of your first house. The dining-room-turned-nursery had BLUE trim when you bought it! As if you needed another “it’s meant to be” moment for your third house, but there you go!
YoungHouseLove says
Totally! I love that about the old house and our new one. They’re like sisters :)

Wow, I’m SO excited to see what you guys do to this new house! I was feeling a little bit sad and nostalgic about you selling the old house, but not any more! I think that this house has sooo much potential to be absolutely gorgeous.
Connie says
Oh my goodness oh my goodness, I am so happy for you guys. Believe it or not I have those same intercoms in my house. I can’t wait to see your plans for them. LOL! Congrats! How do you even comprehend where to begin, create plans for redesign and décor, and balance everything. I always get overwhelmed.
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks Connie! So funny that we have matching intercoms! As for where to begin, we just write everything we want to do out on a giant master-list and circle the stuff we need/want to do first. Then we just take it one project and one day at a time to avoid getting overwhelmed :)

So, crazy question? Has anyone mentioned that your kitchen curtains look like the couch dress that Kim K wore to the MET Gala?

Haha, yes! I keep telling John that when we pull them down I’m going to fashion a dress from them!

So excited to come along for another full-house transformation. It’s going to be beautiful, I’m sure.
Are sun porches really big in Richmond? I’m surprised you’ve had one at all three of your houses. I guess we just don’t see them around here very often (in Kansas City)
YoungHouseLove says
Yes, sunrooms seem to be in nearly every house here!

OHMYGOD…That foyer reminds me of the Beetlejuice house! Wallpaper and “veridien blue!” (at the beginning when Delia and Otho are running through the house with their renovation plans.)
Tell me you know what I’m talking about!!!!
If yes, or if no, you should revisit that movie while you work on the new house.
Geena Davis & Alec Baldwin might live in your attic.

Haha, totally know what you mean!

So excited for you guys and your new house! I love it! Can’t wait to see how it looks when you put your touch on it. Yay!!!
Angie says
Also, you can replace the intercom system with a new unit, using the existing wiring. It is very handy to have it at the front door when you don’t want to open it for a stranger. We had the vintage intercom and updated it with a newer model.
YoungHouseLove says
Sounds cool! Any link to the new model you went with?

I can’t wait to see what you do with the sunroom, especially the floors. Ours is 13X13 with a cement floor and rug that needs replaced.

I have dining room built-in cabinets too. What we did was knock off the glued on ornamental bits, take off the scroll bit at the top and add new hardware. We also painted the exteriors white and the interiors dark grey. This really showed off our china and stemware. Good luck, we all look forward to seeing what you’ll do.

you guys are going to make this house bad-astronaut! I can’t wait to see what you do. It’s pretty scary now, but it has amazing potential. Thanks for the grand tour!

Was in a really bad mood before I watched your video but your enthusiasm for your new home and all potential the home has to be gorgeous with a YHL makevover brought me out of my funk. Thank you guys -and thanks for getting John to do the filming :)

Nice new home! I think my favorite part though was what you said to your mom at the end. I assume you were saying that as though you’d have some pretty big shoes to fill :-) That’s so sweet.

i cant wait to see how you progress with this house!!!!!!
in my ideal mind,id love a diyer house but i lack the creativity.love it!

I am just catching up, but I am so excited to see how you guys handle the whole house! Looks like a real find with SO much potential. Also, SO many features (Classic 80s wetbar, gigantic dark wood builtins, hideous dining room chandelier, desky kitchen nook, intercoms all over) that remind me of the house I grew up in an the houses nearby (mostly mid-late 70s vintage.)
I only started reading you guys in late 2011 when we purchased our home (1976 ranch which I call The Bicentennial House) and much of the major work on your last house was finished. So cool to see all the befores. I know you guys are going to do so well!
Samantha says
Wow, what beautiful bones to your house. BTW I am not even past the sunroom on the main floor, looking onto that massive back deck and to hear this home is in your dream neighborhood. Just Wow.
Congratulations!

Hey guys, I’ve never written to you but I follow you everyday. I’m just wondering if you plan on painting the oak doors and trim in the main floor? It’s similar to mine and I’d live to paint it but am so afraid.
YoungHouseLove says
Hi Carol – we do plan to paint them at some point down the line. You can read about how we did it in our last house if you’re looking for some help: https://www.younghouselove.com/2011/01/glad-thats-out-of-the-way/
