Now that we’re wrapping things up at our current house and we’ve spilled the new house beans it’s like we’ve finally given ourselves permission to LOSE. OUR. MINDS. So yeah, this new house video tour is full of chirpy excitement that only a home in your dream neighborhood can produce. Forgive me. It’s not a good look. And watching it produces the same embarrassment that my way-too-enthusiastic mom elicited back in high school. Which confirms that I’m turning into her. Uh oh…
Woop, there it is. The first set of stairs we ever owned, and the house that’s attached to them.
A few notes:
- I’m not awkward at all in the beginning.
- We used John’s phone to “time stamp” this video thanks to Googling “today’s date” on Friday when we filmed it. We’re nothing if not high tech around here.
- Drinking game: count how many times I say love.
- Keep an eye out for John’s finger coming into frame to tell me which direction to walk (yes, he holds the camera and I walk next to him to chat since his description of the house would be three sentences mixed with long silences and if I held the camera you’d lose your lunch).
- Sorry about the audio getting odd in a few areas (empty rooms have weird echoes and it turns out the bathroom fan upstairs is crazy loud on film).
- I sing about stairs. My life is officially a musical.
- Ahhhhhhh! I can’t think of any more. Did I mention we’re crazy excited?!
Oh and please bear with us when it comes to questions about our plans and the ol’ to do list that we’re compiling. We promise we’ll whip up a floor plan post and share our new masterlist with all of our To-Dos on it as soon as we have those laid out (we’re still in that changing-our-minds-every-second phase). It might be a little while before we’ve fully segued into the full new house mindset since we still live in our current house and definitely have a lot of stuff on our plates with selling it, getting packed up, and moving.
And now, I’ll end this with a completely understated “AHHHHHHHHHHH!” and another big wet kiss for you guys. So excited to share this next chapter with you. Also if you’re my mom and you’re reading this, I’m not that scared of turning into you. Except that none of my shoes will fit anymore…
katie says
Can’t wait to see what all y’all do! All that colored trim reminds me of my house growing up…
Sarah says
I know you said you’ll spell out the plans in full detail..but quick Q! Do you plan on painting the wood windows on the main level to white? And if yes do you have a good tutorial?
YoungHouseLove says
We do plan to paint that blue! And we’ll share a tutorial as we go!

Hanna says
Haha… I first read that as “we are going to paint the windows blue” and I had a “huh?” moment. I actually did a little lecture to myself “this is Sherry and John, whatever they decide always turns out great in the end…” Then I realized you meant you were going to paint OVER that blue. Relief!
But if I am wrong and you DO intend to paint that window blue, I vote for a dark navy. :D

Oh.my.word! I am beyond thrilled for y’all!! Love the tour, so many possibilities. I can’t wait to see what you are thinking of doing and how you transform the space to make it your own!!!! :D
cynthia says
I LOVE IT!! I would have snapped that up in 10 seconds. AMAZING. Just the deck and sunroom alone would have sold me on it. Can’t wait to see the “plan”
Congrats on your dream home.:)
Evelina says
AAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! I can’t to watch this video with sound after work! SO excited.
Congratulations again!
liz @ bon temps beignet says
This is CRAZY!!! I know I said it before when y’all first told us the big news, but this house is like your first house’s big sister. And now that we’ve seen the inside, I feel it even more. From the fireplace in the living room to the sun room window frames, to the exterior…. There are just so many similarities!
By the way. I had a super awkward dream last night that I stumbled across your new place and kinda just invited myself in while y’all were cooking dinner. Katie Bower was there too, and everyone just kept giving me the side-eye, like “when is this overly excited girl gonna leave?” Like I said, awkward.
YoungHouseLove says
Hahah! Such a funny dream! And yes, the new house’s living room is SO reminiscent of our first house’s den, which was our favorite room ever. Still miss that little room! Haha!

Are the corner cabinets actually built in cabinets with sides and backs, or are they more like a cabinet facade where you can still see the wall through them? I’ve seen them both ways.
Anyway, we had similar cabinets with giant finials in our dining room and it was surprisingly easy to take off the top trim part with the finial, cut it down on the table saw and reattach it so our cabinets feel a little more modern.
YoungHouseLove says
I think you can see through them to the wall, but the modling stops around them (so if we pulled them out, there would be no molding in those areas, but they would be backless. You solution sounds awesome, so thanks for the tip :)

I literally squealed when I saw you guys had posted a house tour because I wasn’t expecting one yet. But SO happy for you because the new house is AMAZING! I can definitely see why you snatched it up. It’s gonna be gorgeous!
mindy says
I can’t wait to see what you will do with the kitchen and eating area. The layout is exactly like mine, down to how the fridge is placed across a walkway to the garage, and the peninsula and eating area. So excited for you guys!!!
DeeJay says
Fabulous! It is very reminiscent of our current home. It had the exact same gray carpet as your problem carpet, on the stairs and the landing upstairs. The desk in the kitchen, I have one also and am currently using it as a mini office. Am so happy for all of you and I hope that this re-do runs smooth and with as few hiccups as possible!!
Liz says
LOVE this new place! It has great bones and I can’t wait to see what you guys do with it.
Chelsea says
Love it! The desk alcove in the kitchen reminds me of the little desk nook with what appears to be shelves of cookbooks (?) that they have in the kitchen in Modern Family, which is one of my favorite house-crush TV shows.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh I love that kitchen!

How lucky for that house that you chose him/her! I think of my house as a girl for some reason. She has wonderful potential and I can’t wait to follow you on this journey! And I CAN smell the carpet. We had the same thing when we moved in. I couldn’t wait to rip it out..did so before we even moved in. We’re lucky enough to have hardwoods underneath and some of the rooms looked really rough, but we just threw down a few rugs until we could get around to refinishing them.
Thanks for the tour! I think I’m going to watch it again now…
Melissa says
Can’t wait to see what you do with your totally browntown kitchen — my kitchen has a similar layout and needs updating so I will be paying attention!
Megan @ Rappsody in Rooms says
Hooray! We have all been so excited for this post! I love the house in every way and can’t wait to see the changes that you make. My highlights of the video are: smellevision and the fact that you have already moved a pillow over! So Sherry!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha! That’s for Clara. She likes to jump on it and lay around on it while we’re over there taking pics, planning, measuring, etc. She’s IN LOVE with the new house. As is Burger, who can’t stop sniffing every corner! HAha!

Awesome! Love the slate tile in the foyer – think you will keep it?
And I want a tour of your yard too!!!

We love it too, although it’s a bit rough in a few areas! Hope we can save it!

How exciting for you and all of us who get to go along for the ride!
I know someone who bought a house with an “animal room” that they tore the carpet out of, later ripped the walls to the studs, painted, got new windows but 12 years later the room still smells like “animal” (and not the Muppet character!) on certain days.
They just found out that the animal pee penetrates into the concrete and there ain’t no cleanin’ that out. What they found out was that they need to pull up the flooring refinish the concrete, seal it and then lay flooring over that.
YoungHouseLove says
Smart! Thanks for the tip!

When you panned through the garage, I saw something rolled up in a tarp in the corner…hmmmmm…perhaps the body/bones of the previous owner who painted all of the mauve and blue trim? That’s the secret of getting the house you want at a great price!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha! They left that there! We think it’s an old rug. Scared to touch it quite yet… haha!

Mimi says
Hi Sherry and John! Congratulations on your new house! It looks beautiful! I should have asked in the post where you answer everyone’s questions but I just thought of this last night. What do you guys use to check out a potential house’s history? As in if there’s been any crimes or anything that would give the house bad juju. I am house hunting too and a lot of the houses I’m looking at are 20-30 years old so Lord only knows the things that have happened in them. I’m super afraid of ghosts which doesn’t bother most people but it freaks me out to think that someone may have died in a house I might buy. Are you guys the type of people that don’t believe in spirits so therefore it doesn’t bother you?
YoungHouseLove says
I think they have to disclose if anyone died or was killed in a house (right guys? isn’t that the rule?). Thankfully we knew the history of this house since it had only one owner and the seller told us about where they moved/etc.
xo
s
GreenInOC says
I think it depends on the state. In California it must be disclosed to the buyer if there was a death in the house in the last 3 years.
Hanna says
I always did “house stalking” on my ‘potentials’ while I was looking. In our area you can access the records (where they record mortgages and deeds) online, so you can usualloy find out the name of the previous owners and then look for online obits in the area. One house we looked at the old gentleman (103 years old!) died in the house and there was a death certificate issued at the house that was on record.
Or you can google your street address. We did that to one house we were looking at and found that it was on the market because it had been the site of a gruesome murder-suicide two years before.
The ‘died in the house’ thing doesn’t bother me — my grandmother died in our house after a long sickness and it was comforting knowing we were there for her. But the MURDER in the house thing DEFINTELY bothered us. Not only that, but the boyfriend murdered the girlfriend and killed himself one weekend while they were fixing the house up for sale. Too much creepy.
Someone did finally buy it, renovated it, and it recently came back on the market and sold almost immediately. So, yeah. My advice for potential buyers: Google your street address. My advice for people who already closed on a house: DON’T Google your street addresss! :D

The history is … a lot of (peace and) Love!! :-) Good vibes all around! (very good people)
Melissa says
I have been following you since your first house and can’t wait to see what you guys do with this one!
Sarah says
Oh my god you guys, I can see why this is your dream house! I love it. So much potential! I’m so excited for you guys to start fixing this house up. :)
One little note: you mentioned in the video that you’d like to rip up the carpet on the stairs. I can see it’s in rough shape, but you might want to think about replacing it or putting down a runner. Experience tells me that paws and stocking-feet won’t mix well with shiny new wood stairs. I’ve been trying to figure out a solution to this for 6 years–if anyone out there has a suggestion that’s not carpet, I’d sure like to know!
Congrats on your great new house!
-Sarah
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks for the tip Sarah! That nasty carpet definitely has to go but we’ll definitely consider some runner options if we think those will come in handy :)

Sarah, I’ve read that there is textured poly that you can use. I’ve been meaning to check it out because I would like to use it on my stoop steps that are super slick!

So. Much. Blue. Trim!

I have admit, when I first saw the “new house” post I was really sad about y’all leaving your current house because I love it so much! But now that I’ve seen this one I can’t wait to see what you do with it. I know it will be an awesome ride!
Rebecca says
So excited about this! I love a good ole house and I think the transformation for this house will be ridiculous!! Can’t wait until you two can start putting your ideas in action!
Jenny says
Aww you guys!!! SO pleased for you…and Clara and Burger too! It looks like the house has a beautiful layout and lots of features…minus the crazy coloured trim of course. Thanks for the tour! Cant wait to see what you guys get up to once you move in. Wishing you lots of years of happiness in your new abode and good health to enjoy it.

Major home envy!!!! What a beautiful setting, with gorgeous views, and SOOOO much potential!!! Can’t wait to see you dig into this one!!
Happy New Home video!!
Bree says
Oh my goodness! Your new house is beautiful already, and I can’t wait to see how you make it heavenly!
I had no idea a tab and toilet bathroom was called a half-bath! We’ve always called hours a quarter bath. Learn something new every day!
Sandra says
Ahhhhh! So much potential! I’m so excited for you guys!
About the animal smell in the sunroom, be sure to seal the concrete under hr carpet after you take it out or you will suffer the way we have in our basement. Whenever it rains, we still get the cat urine smell despite new carpet and pad. Kilz or Safecoat that business!
I foresee a lot of tiling and bathroom renovation in your future.
I hope you find more hardwood under that carpet upstairs. I hope you rip it out and refinish the whole house as step 1 before you move in! It’s got to be so much easier to handle stuff like floors and painting trim in the whole house before you move in.
So excited, ahhhhh!
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks for the tip Sandra!

Stacy says
Wow! I can’t image what this house looked like when it was “staged” to sell! Got any more photographic evidence that the previous owners had a thing for making the inside look totally different than the outside? :)
Congrats on the new adventure! Welcome home!
YoungHouseLove says
It actually looked pretty much like this when we bought it (other than a few old rugs being in some rooms along with a few old pieces of furniture). Apparently no one had lived in the house for a while, so it wasn’t full of life/people/furniture like some houses on the market.
xo
s
Mary says
That style of decorating was very popular in 1980, country/colonial.
Jessica says
When you guys revealed that you bought a new house, I was happy for you. But now…hearing the excitement in your voice has also made me SO FLIPPIN’ EXCITED to see what you guys do to this place! I can’t wait!!
Are you going to wait to work on it until you move in? For example, if you have to replace the carpet, I imagine it would be easier to do before you move your furniture in, but are you waiting to get your old house settled before you start anything in the new place?
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, we’ll be doing things before we move in that help make us more efficient like removing old carpet, but we won’t be gutting bathrooms or kitchens until we live there a nice long time to see how we use those spaces and really think things through!
xo
s
Jenn says
Lots of potential!
Why did you have to timestamp the video?
YoungHouseLove says
We just thought it would be fun to show you guys the exact date that we did the tour so no one wondered if we had done a bunch of projects over the last few months that we were secretly saving for later. We love to be in real time with you guys :)

Robyn says
OMG eeeeep! Its incredible!! I think I would have purchased it for the back deck alone lol. Sooooo much potential! I can’t wait to see what you guys do with it! You guys are so uber talented, its going to be spectacular :)

I’m ready for a $herdog and KB trim partay!!!!!! I’m SO EXCITED!!!! Can’t wait for you to move in. Man, we’ll be renters for a while, but this just really, REALLY makes me want my own home!!! It’s going to be AWESOME! Congratulations!!

As in… yours is going to be awesome. Hopefully so will ours, but it’s imaginary. HAHA.

Love the house – it actually looks a LOT like our house, which is all the way up in Central NY! We also have the same wet bar weirdness in our living room but we came up with a solution for making it work (insert Tim Gunn’s voice, ha!). Two words… Coffee bar. Boom. Or okay, tea, if that’s what you like. Having the sink right there is really helpful. We set up a keurig, coffee, tea, mugs, etc. Everyone loves using it when they come visit. Just a thought about one way you could use it until you go all “DIY” on it. :)
YoungHouseLove says
So cute!

Casey says
OMGEEEEEE! LOVE it!! But, hey! Where’s the video tour of the deck and yard? That’s part of the house, too!
YoungHouseLove says
We do outdoor tours separately, just so videos aren’t 20 minutes long, so we’ll have to make our very first outdoor tour of the new house for you guys soon :)

Lindsay says
Oh man, you guys have your hands FULL. The idea of painting all that trim…. that alone is enough to make me want to cry in a heap on the floor on your behalf. Can’t wait to see what you tackle first!
Amy says
Love it! It has so many wonderful features that both of your previous homes have had.
Karen says
Congrats!! As excited as you are to own the house, I’m equally excited to watch the tranformation. Regarding those ugly brown kitchen cabinets, what’s your plan for those – paint, rip-out, or other?
YoungHouseLove says
Not sure yet! When it comes to kitchen we like to move in and live with them for a nice long time (that’s the only way we really learn what we love and what we want to change).
xo
s
Jen says
Are the cabinets in good condition, and are they solid wood or shabby veneer? (They look really solid in the video, but I know those things can be totally deceiving!)
YoungHouseLove says
They’re wood but some of them are split and damaged so we’ll have to see where we end up :)

So, so, so happy for you guys! But mostly for the rest of us with similar floor plans ;) Bring on the inspiration!

I am so jealous:) I currently live in a ranch and my son says it’s not really a house because it doesn’t have stairs! Ha, ha! So much potential in that house and it has a great layout! I don’t blame you for jumping on it!
Andrea says
This house seems so great – there are so many good spaces. One great thing about a house that is so outdated is that all your before and afters will look INCREDIBLE! And I LOVE your deck…
Kate R says
oh man! I am so excited! The house definitely has awesome bones, and the most glorious mauve/blue color palette I think I’ve ever seen. haha. I can’t wait to see it transform!

How cool. It really does echo some of the unique elements from the other 2 homes, with plenty of new awesome things to tackle – really seems like it was meant to be!
