Now that we’re wrapping things up at our current house and we’ve spilled the new house beans it’s like we’ve finally given ourselves permission to LOSE. OUR. MINDS. So yeah, this new house video tour is full of chirpy excitement that only a home in your dream neighborhood can produce. Forgive me. It’s not a good look. And watching it produces the same embarrassment that my way-too-enthusiastic mom elicited back in high school. Which confirms that I’m turning into her. Uh oh…
Woop, there it is. The first set of stairs we ever owned, and the house that’s attached to them.
A few notes:
- I’m not awkward at all in the beginning.
- We used John’s phone to “time stamp” this video thanks to Googling “today’s date” on Friday when we filmed it. We’re nothing if not high tech around here.
- Drinking game: count how many times I say love.
- Keep an eye out for John’s finger coming into frame to tell me which direction to walk (yes, he holds the camera and I walk next to him to chat since his description of the house would be three sentences mixed with long silences and if I held the camera you’d lose your lunch).
- Sorry about the audio getting odd in a few areas (empty rooms have weird echoes and it turns out the bathroom fan upstairs is crazy loud on film).
- I sing about stairs. My life is officially a musical.
- Ahhhhhhh! I can’t think of any more. Did I mention we’re crazy excited?!
Oh and please bear with us when it comes to questions about our plans and the ol’ to do list that we’re compiling. We promise we’ll whip up a floor plan post and share our new masterlist with all of our To-Dos on it as soon as we have those laid out (we’re still in that changing-our-minds-every-second phase). It might be a little while before we’ve fully segued into the full new house mindset since we still live in our current house and definitely have a lot of stuff on our plates with selling it, getting packed up, and moving.
And now, I’ll end this with a completely understated “AHHHHHHHHHHH!” and another big wet kiss for you guys. So excited to share this next chapter with you. Also if you’re my mom and you’re reading this, I’m not that scared of turning into you. Except that none of my shoes will fit anymore…
Rachel says
I am sooooo excited for you-all!!!!!! I’m really looking forward to seeing you uncover the beauty in this new home.
Cindy says
I love the new house and the floor plan! It is so exciting to find a house in an area that you love! I have a blog question though. Since you have already made-over two houses, and the new house needs a lot of the same updates that you have done to the previous two, are you going to always link back to the other tutorials? I just don’t see that as keeping people’s attention or being very interesting if you say you are tiling the bathroom but don’t feel like writing up a detailed post because you’ve been-there-done-that, so “here, go click on a link we did two years ago to a house we don’t live in anymore”. I noticed you started doing that with a lot of the updates you did with the second house.
YoungHouseLove says
We definitely plan to write step by step posts for many of the things we tackle with new photos, pics, tips, etc. you know we love to share that stuff and we have a lot to do overe there. Can’t wait to spill all the details as we go :)

That looks amazinG!! I’m so excited to see what you do. I couldn’t help but notice the big tall windows. We have some of them in our house and I’m excited to see how you incorporate them so I can steal some ideas.
Robin @ our semi organic life says
LOVE LOVE it! So jealous of your dream home! It looks so cozy while being spacious.
Amanda says
Ahh, I’m so excited! I was shocked by the secret house reveal, and I just can’t wait to see what you are going to do with this place! I actually gasped at the amazing/terrible wallpaper in the master bath.
Weird question: Are sunrooms super common in your part of the country, or do you just love them? I’ve lived up and down the west coast and I don’t think I’ve ever so much as been in a house with a sunroom, so I’m really curious about how all three of your homes have had sunrooms!
YoungHouseLove says
Yes they seem to be really common down here! I has never heard of one until we moved :)

It’s so cute with so much potential! Congrats. Btw…tad jealous about those dining room builtins (just imagine all those DIYs….) and looking forward to all the projects you guys will have. You guys inspire! (like realistic ‘I can do this’ inspiration).
Liz says
Ahhh I have that same entryway tile/pattern! This is so exciting for you guys (and for us, by extension)!
Liz says
LOVE the new house! Especially those gorgeous windows! Congrats and can’t wait to see what you do with the place!
Kelly K says
I love how excited you are in this video! I’m so happy for you guys. I vote to keep the corner cabinets in the dining room, but maybe that’s just because we don’t have any and I would really like some! Instead of totally getting rid of them, maybe you can work with the bones and give them a fresh look.
Jennifer says
Wow! Y’all have your work cut out for you, but I can’t wait to see it! Country blue (and mauve!) trim, intercom, wet bar, wallpaper…totally my mom’s dream house from 1987. ;)
Olivia says
i’m sure a million people have said this but –OMGEE, your deck and backyard are to-die-for! so excited to see what you guys are going to do with the house!
Emily | Sparkle Meets Pop says
Can’t wait to see how it comes together. I guess there’s no rest for the DIY duo! Have fun you guys! We’re sharing in your singsong excitement over here in CA. :)
Jillian@TheHumbleGourmet says
So exciting! So will you be bringing the appliances you already own with you, or are you planning on leaving them at the current house?
YoungHouseLove says
Those will convey since they fit perfectly (we built that surround for the fridge so it was custom-fit :)

Jennifer says
Cannot WAIT to see what you guys do.
Your kitchen looks an awful lot like mine, and I am FROZEN with indecision about what to do to improve it. Is it wrong for me to ask you to tackle that first so that I can then just copy what you do? lol.
Congrats on this new chapter. :)
Lindy says
Love it! I get a Colonial Williamsburg vibe in your dining room and office with the built-ins, powder blue trim and valances.
Peaches says
Be sure to get Panasonic fans for the bathrooms. They are super quiet! Sometimes we forget that ours are on.
Connie S. says
Congrats! It’s a great house (or it will be!) and should definitely keep you guys busy for the NEXT 3 years :)
Tanya says
LOVE! Congratulations!
I bought a house (apparently the same time that you guys did) that was built in 1986 and still looks like 1986 inside. I have tons of wallpaper stripping hints if you ever need them. Can’t wait to see all the fun stuff!
Valentina says
This house is a diamond in the raw! It’s crazy exciting to even start thinking of all the things you, guys, can do to turn it into a real gem! I was also hoping to see around the house, like how big the yard is and also the deck. Can you show that sometime soon, too? Simply cannot wait!!!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes we can’t wait to do an outdoor tour video soon!

EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Megan says
Congrats! The house looks amazing! So excited to see all the new projects to come! :)
Priscilla says
Sherry, you are so darn cute! Your video tour was priceless … with all the excitement in your voice. I couldn’t be happier for your family.
Wendy B. says
Thanks for sharing the befores of your new home! Such a great layout, I can just imagine how good it’s going to look with just paint and the carpets pulled up let alone with the talent and energy you two will put into it! What a beautiful setting too! I hope your other home sells quickly so you can concentrate on your new adventure!
Gina says
Afternoon kindergarten has totally messed up my am routine of reading you regularly this year! Can someone show me to the bean spilling post? I better read that before I ask all the questions screaming through my head.
YoungHouseLove says
I think it’s on page 2 of our site if you scroll back :)

Love it!!! So much potential! Can’t wait to see what you do!
One thing I find interesting is the long hallway that leads to just the laundry. Seems like such a waste of space… If the laundry was put somewhere else all that space could have been incorporated into the bedrooms. Any plans for this space?
YoungHouseLove says
The bedrooms are all a nice size so we don’t mind them there (it’s nice to have them upstairs too :)

The house is lovely! I’m so happy for you and selfishly, I cannot wait until you two get your mitts on it. FYI – my brother and his wife just had a house built and that office-thing in your kitchen is often called a “command center”. My bro had to pay like $3K for his command center (his is also off of the kitchen with matching cabinetry). Enjoy your command center! I believe it’s meant for bills and house admin stuff. Congratulations and all the best!!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yeah, I remember that term from when we went to a tour of inspirational new homes. Gotta remember that…

Thais Bessa says
LOVE IT! I think the whole layout flows much nicer than the current house.
The house we just bought also has the combo disgusting carpet + old wallpaper + weird coloured trim throughout (but ours is different in EACH room: blue, red, purple, they got the whole rainbow covered).
So we are with you in the ripping carpet and wallpaper like maniacs.
Oh and don’t get me started on the kitchens, both your new one and ours. Hopefully they will be beauties soon!
Paula says
OMG! Your house is stunning! (and yeah even before you work your magic on it)
The layout is fantastic, so much to work with! and the details such as the windows are lovely. Not to mention that deck and backyard!
Can’t wait to see what you guys do with it. Now I’m gonna go watch it again and die of jealousy lol
Devin says
So exciting! Can’t wait to see what you do with the new place! (:
Molly says
OH MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Loving this house and all the possibilities… good job J & S! I will be GLUED to this remodel. cannot wait to follow this journey :D
Danielle says
Yayy love it! This is one of my favorite layouts for a house. Great for a family home.
Heather (Laptops to Lullabies) says
Aughh! So exciting to see inside the new place. I love it! The layout seems perfect.
Lauren says
Thank you for sharing the “before” house tour with us! I didn’t comment before when you announced the new house but I hope readers are not still giving you a hard time over your decision to keep the new house a secret due to privacy, timing, and focus concerns. I feel very grateful to you all for all the free inspiration and how-tos you provide us with and did not feel lead on at all with changes you were making in your current home. I am so very exciting to see what you all do with the space, I know it is going to amazing!! Is there a basement or crawl space in this house? Hope the showings on your current house went well over the weekend.
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks so much Lauren! There’s a crawl space, a double garage, and an attic but no basement :)

Ooops, sorry, quick question: do you plan to have your iconic gallery walls somewhere? Where?
YoungHouseLove says
Johns against another gallery wall (wants to change it up) but I love it so the jury is still out :)

I LOVE the layout of your new house. It’s my dream layout eventually, actually. I love 2 story houses, and that kind of traditional colonial style (is that what you would call it?) I just love.
Hubby and I are closing on our first house in one month from tomorrow! We are so excited. Ours is a two story, but more modern in style, and smaller in square footage than we wanted. But actually, I think the smaller size is turning out to be a good thing, because we can furnish it for a lot less money, rather than having to live with an empty, echoing house until we could make a bunch of major furniture purchases.
My dream house has a formal living room and a den/family room with fireplace, and also an eat-in kitchen and a separate formal dining room, just like your new house. One day we’ll get there!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Abby! Yes, I think you’d call this a colonial. Good luck with your dream house!

Are there things that you are going to bring with you to this house like the Clothespin Chandelier?
YoungHouseLove says
All of the lights and almost all window treatments convey, but lights and curtains are some of our favorite things to make/shop for :)

Guylaine Côté says
WOW!!!!
So much potential with the house!!!
It will be sooooooooooooo fun to watch the transformations!
You bought a great great house!
Guylaine :)
Misty says
This is so exciting for you guys! But am I the only one having a hard time feeling invested in the 3rd one? Sigh. I know you guys will do beautiful things with it as you always do. But with you guys moving every few years, I guess I’m finidng it hard to keep “investing” in the new homes. Seems more like living in it while you flip it than really cultivating a home that you will love. :-(
YoungHouseLove says
We completely feel bittersweet to leave our current house so we’re not surprised that you’re feeling that way! More than ever the new house feels like a very long term house for our family, so we’re excited to take our time and put down roots there :)

Brenda says
Wow, the deck is huge! Is it weird that it totally seems like you, even though you haven’t done anything in it yet? Maybe it’s that there’s amazing potential but tons of ugly surface stuff (wallpapered light switch, anyone?). I’m actually glad it’s so awful in places because it’s going to be OMG SO EXCITING when you start working on stuff and putting your stamp on the space.
GreenInOC says
@Brenda, I noticed the wallpapered light switch too! I thought, wow whoever did this REALLY loved that wallpaper!
Samantha says
You’re new house is my dream floor plan! I’m so excited to see what you guys will do with it because I love your style :)
BobbyMartin says
SO much potential in this place. I can’t wait to see what you’re gonna do with it! I share your blog with everyone because it’s such an inspiration. I live in an apartment right now, but I can’t wait to have a place of own and take on similar projects :)
Aimee says
Side note… I saw the before-mentioned comment with the resemblance of Sherry to Emilia Clarke…
Sherry, do you also hear you look like Michelle Trachtenberg? Ahh sometimes I can’t get past that! :)
YoungHouseLove says
My high school friend has said that for years but I never see it!
Haha!

love the tour!! you guys will be busy!
things that make you go hmmm…a laundry area on top of carpet?!?!?
Heather says
Are there hardwood floors under that upstairs carpet??
I’m so excited about this new adventure! :)
YoungHouseLove says
We wish! Sadly it’s just plywood :(

I was already excited to see you work on a new home, but now that I’ve watched the walk-thru, I’ve even more excited to see what you do! So much potential!
Cait B says
It looks great!! Honestly it really reminds me of your first house a lot, especially that sun room! I am very jealous of that feature.
And a little giddy myself that the Petersiks have a new house at the same time I do! (we got ours at the very end of Dec)I’ve read your blog for about 2 years now and I was soo excited to finally have a house of my own but now I am even more excited that you have one too! I feel like we are working together across the Eastern Seaboard (Hubby and I live in NY)
Congrats and have fun!
angel says
Sooooo exciting!
Congratulations again!
Looking forward to spending more years following your updates! Yikes, that sounds so stalker-ish but I think you know what I mean :)
chris says
This is your third house with a sunroom, Does every house in Va. have a sunroom?
YoungHouseLove says
Seems like they’re really common! I had never heard of one before we moved here!

OMG! My husband and I have been looking for a new house for about 2 years, and we toured THIS house. I was too intimidated by all the projects that it needed, but it was a great house. We ended up with a house in Roxshire. Our new house has those dark knotty pine cabinets in the kitchen too, and I am not a fan. I can’t wait to see what you do with yours, as I am completly lost on how to make them work. Congrats on the new house!
YoungHouseLove says
So funny that you toured it!!

Not to be too crazy, but I sort of love the blue hexagonal tiles in your master bath. They just seem so unique. Can’t wait to see what you do!
