Now that we’re wrapping things up at our current house and we’ve spilled the new house beans it’s like we’ve finally given ourselves permission to LOSE. OUR. MINDS. So yeah, this new house video tour is full of chirpy excitement that only a home in your dream neighborhood can produce. Forgive me. It’s not a good look. And watching it produces the same embarrassment that my way-too-enthusiastic mom elicited back in high school. Which confirms that I’m turning into her. Uh oh…
Woop, there it is. The first set of stairs we ever owned, and the house that’s attached to them.
A few notes:
- I’m not awkward at all in the beginning.
- We used John’s phone to “time stamp” this video thanks to Googling “today’s date” on Friday when we filmed it. We’re nothing if not high tech around here.
- Drinking game: count how many times I say love.
- Keep an eye out for John’s finger coming into frame to tell me which direction to walk (yes, he holds the camera and I walk next to him to chat since his description of the house would be three sentences mixed with long silences and if I held the camera you’d lose your lunch).
- Sorry about the audio getting odd in a few areas (empty rooms have weird echoes and it turns out the bathroom fan upstairs is crazy loud on film).
- I sing about stairs. My life is officially a musical.
- Ahhhhhhh! I can’t think of any more. Did I mention we’re crazy excited?!
Oh and please bear with us when it comes to questions about our plans and the ol’ to do list that we’re compiling. We promise we’ll whip up a floor plan post and share our new masterlist with all of our To-Dos on it as soon as we have those laid out (we’re still in that changing-our-minds-every-second phase). It might be a little while before we’ve fully segued into the full new house mindset since we still live in our current house and definitely have a lot of stuff on our plates with selling it, getting packed up, and moving.
And now, I’ll end this with a completely understated “AHHHHHHHHHHH!” and another big wet kiss for you guys. So excited to share this next chapter with you. Also if you’re my mom and you’re reading this, I’m not that scared of turning into you. Except that none of my shoes will fit anymore…
Belinda says
AHHHHmazing! Congratulations guys! Cannot wait to see the plans and all the amazing things you will do!
Cori says
Thanks so much for putting this together for us so soon! I am SO excited, I almost feel like I’m the one moving…and then I remember that I don’t have to do any of the work! :) The house is going to look amazing, there’s no doubt about it!
Whitney says
Great house! Such potential!!!! I can’t wait to see what you do with it. My two-year-old was watching with me and added though that certain things were “Yucky!” and we should “Throw that in the trash!” Ha ha!
Amber says
Wow. The floor plan is so different than what you have dealt with in the past. I am excited to see what is in store.
Do you guys still have anything on the current house’s to-do list or are you just maintaining until you get it sold?
YoungHouseLove says
Now our to do list, other than selling and moving, is shifting over to more stuff at the new house (a few things will be so helpful to knock our before all of our furniture is in there).

This made me so happy to see the new house. I definitely had reservations, but seeing this new house with all of its potential excites me so much! I can not wait to see those french doors going onto the deck. Good luck selling your current house & I’m so excited to see new posts about this one. :)
Leah Kerbs says
I’m so excited for you guys!! We just bought a new house as well in a great neighborhood and are trying to sell our house. I’m totally going back and forth with everything I want to do in the new house too!! Trying to sell our house and pack and move (we are moving to a new town) is overwhelming but exciting! Anyway…wanted to say congrats!! So so happy and excited for you all!
By the way…my husband ordered your book for me for mothers day and it came in today!!!!!! I’m literally jumping up and down and doing my happy dance :) yay!!!!
YoungHouseLove says
As that’s so sweet! Thanks to your man for ordering it!

Joseph says
Awesome, guys. It’s a great house and I can’t wait to see what you do with the place!
Kate says
I have been reading this blog for about 2 years now and I am SO EXCITED about your new house…mainly because it is VERY similar to my home that we are slowly (very slowly) improving. Cannot wait to see what you do with the tile in the bathrooms (we are currently avoiding that space in our house ha!). Looking forward to the next year (or so) of updates! Congrats!
Bboss says
That house takes me back to 1971. Seeing how much work it will take to modernize it makes me tired just looking at it.
Carley says
I love your new house! It reminds me of ours, so I’m a little biased. ;) I could only watch with closed captions right now (hilarious!), but I think the house flows so nicely! I think you’re going to love the two story house. Our favorite part is having the living spaces and sleeping (to us more private) spaces completely separate. Thanks for sharing!
Bonnie says
What a great house with so much potential! I’m interested to see how two levels works for your family. We’re in a ranch now and I’m not sure how I’d feel about a two-story.
Congrats on a great find, guys!
Christie says
Ohhh, its a traditional layout … it will be fun to see how you mix that with your style.
Will you be spraying all the trim at one time? With that old carpet upstairs you wouldn’t even need to mask the floor.
YoungHouseLove says
We hope to knock some of that out if we can!

Ashley from The Kitchen-Sink Chronicles says
I’ll be honest… I had pretty much fallen out of love with guys as I didn’t feel like your projects related to me anymore but after seeing the house tour… I’m so excited! Your new house is in about the same condition as my house (and I’ve been here over a year) so I’m excited to see what you come up with!
Liz says
Are you planning on sharing details of the stuff you had to get fixed already? Roof, furnace, etc.? I know it’s not DIY but would still be interesting to hear how you chose the contractors, roof colors, styles, etc. Love the DIY stuff too but sometimes figuring out when to replace a furnace or types of materials for a roof are really hard decisions because they’re big $$. Luckily my townhouse has roof covered by HOA but it could come in handy one day.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yeah we’re planning to cover that stuff too!
xo,
s
Liz says
Great! Also, I vote for keeping the china cabinets. You can easily modernize them with paint – or restaining them if they’re nice quality wood would be gorgeous. They give way too much character to remove completely!
Brittany says
I’m soo excited for you all!!! Does the realtor who listed the house follow your blog? b/c I have to say after being a long time blog reader and seeing the renovations from your prior two homes, this couldn’t be more perfect for you all to put your stamp on. Congrats guys! Can’t wait to see more! :)
YoungHouseLove says
They don’t! But that’s so sweet to say :)

Laurie @PassionatePennyPincher.com says
I so had to laugh when I watched this because our last house was EXACTLY this house and we fixed it up and just loved it before moving. We even had the silly wetbar in the family room (that thing drove me nuts because we weren’t there long enough to get rid of it ~ ugh!) It had the same steps, dining room, kitchen, everything. (Ours even had really cool retro metalic wallpaper that you could kind of see yourself in the downstairs powder room.) Can’t wait to see what you do with it!
YoungHouseLove says
So funny! And now I’m sad we don’t have metallic wallpaper in the mix. Ha!

Heather Beals says
OMG! I had to scroll back in shock I obviously missed the reveal post lol.
How exciting!!!
Melanie P says
Looks like you guys need to have a wallpaper-peeling-and-painting party! Love the new house. Congratulations!!
YoungHouseLove says
Seriously! Wallpaper peeling party at our place!

There’s a horrifying amount of roof raising and “booyas” happening over here right now. I may have also shouted “holla!” Years ago (like, still in your first house way before Clara) I had to make up a rule that I only read YHL alone behind a closed door…
YoungHouseLove says
Haha!

Love this house! I would be daunted just with painting the trim, but dang- so much potential. I can see why you love it. Funny that so many comments were about the basement (or lack thereof)! Living in Charleston, SC, if you dug a basement, you’d just hit water/sand. But we all live here without one! Can’t wait to see what you do with it, and good luck with selling!
Chris says
This is your third house with a sunroom, do all houses in Va have sunrooms?
YoungHouseLove says
Seems like a ton of them do! I had never heard of them until we moved here :)

Renee says
Uber excited for you all!
Kayla says
This is probably not even on your radar…..but will you bring the color palette from your current house to the new house? I’m just curious because you had such different colors in your 1st vs. 2nd home, and I’m wondering if your tastes will continue to evolve so much. Thoughts?
YoungHouseLove says
I think it’ll keep evolving! We seem to love all colors lately so it’ll be fun to see where we end up!

This is so exciting! We just bought a very similar home (read kinda colonial, but mostly filled with 70s wallpaper and bad carpet) and I was THRILLED to see you just did the same! (Check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9arVIlX2g4) As first timers w/ a grocery list of DIY projects, including taking down over 2000 sq ft of patterned wallpaper and getting rid of those same brick vinyl floors, I couldn’t be happier to have you two doing the same at the same time! Congrats!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw, such a charming house! Good luck with everything Meg!

Mollee says
Wow, congratulations, you guys! The house has great potential, and the property looks so peaceful. I think you should name it!
YoungHouseLove says
A few people have called it The Home Alone house, which is pretty hilarious to us!

Father of the bride house! All John has to do is to lay the pavement for the walkpath…! You already have Annie/Clara, there can/may be a boy later, and you’ll have to do the kitchen a la amazing! And the front yard…

Haha!

Are you guys going to constantly link back to the two previous houses for tutorials since this house needs many of the same updates, or are you actually going to blog about this house in true form for the people who haven’t been reading your blog for 4 years? If not, it should make for some pretty neat before and after photos…and not much else!
YoungHouseLove says
We’re planning to share every project as we go, complete with photos, tutorials, and copious Burger & Clara pics :)

Katie @ Spirals & Spatulas says
I’m so excited to see what y’all do first! There may be a lot of bad trim and bad carpet, but it looks like it has great bones!
Lindsey says
I love it! I have to make a suggestion/recommendation, though! With the laundry area on the second floor, please don’t buy a front load washer/dryer! Few people know this, but the high efficiency, super turbo washers they make for front loads these days are supposed to placed on a slab. They vibrate so much, even in a first floor laundry room, that they can crack and separate things like crown molding from the wall (like it did in our house). Stick to a top loader and get anti-vibration little feet for it.
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks for the tip! In our current house we put it on a slab of thick wood and it was awesome for keeping it from vibrating :)

Yevette says
What a wonderful house! Congratulations! Think you will stay here 4ever? I would! Maybe when you “finish” this one, you could start a business doing other people’s home renovations????

Always a possibility!

Are you going to paint the trim when you pull up the carpet? Painting floor trim with flooring that you don’t want to mess up is a pain! If you wait and do it with nice floors, I’ll be sure to take any advice on how NOT to make a mess (as I have done multiple times in the past).
And has anyone mentioned how CRAZY EXCITED we are for y’all? Not just on the new house, but the fact that your discipline and hard work is paying off! :-) So happy for you both.
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks LMN! You’re so sweet! We’d love to paint trim when the carpet’s up!

I’m soooooooo excited! I really would like to be in our own house right now, especially with baby no 2 on the way and all of us sharing a bedroom. Wish I knew where to start, and have so many things to work out… Stay in our current city? Move out of state? Move to England? (Husband is from London.). Just would really like a house to settle in and raise our children, a house that can be their memory like our childhood homes were.
Jeanna says
Stooopid excited over here! I can’t wait to see what you guys tackle first! It’s like watching an artist with a fresh canvas!!!
Good luck selling the old place too. We promise to not be pushy- moving is a major undertaking. We’re sticking with ya! Clara is at the perfect age where packing can be made into a game! (Let’s see how many books we can fit in this box C! 1,2,3…) I know that it can take twice as long with kids around, but it won’t seem so frustrating to her if she is the helper- but you know this. You’re always so good at including her.
Quick question about the kitchen. You mentioned you were thinking about putting in french doors where the windows are. Do you think you’ll have a table there? We have a slider to our deck off of our dining room and I feel like we’re constantly fighting the seating around the table and having a nice walkway to and from the deck…. any ideas?
YoungHouseLove says
We’re not sure about how we’ll hopefully get doors and a table in there, but we have a four person pedestal table in our living room (behind our couch) that we thought we could try…

I have to say I LOVE your new house. The inside is great – so much potential but the outside is amazing. Love the style of the house, the big deck and the even bigger lot. Good decision you two. Enjoy!
SunshineGal85 says
I am in love with this house and can’t wait for you guys to breathe new life into it. I don’t think anything could be better than to have the laundry room on the same floor as the bedrooms. I’d much rather have to carry a few dish towels up and down the stairs than to lug an entire hamper full of clothes. Not to mention the bed linens. Thanks for sharing the video.
Amanda @ Serenity Now says
LOVED the tour! So much potential there…even with all that blue trim. ;)
Reny says
Love the house! not digging the decor (i’m artistically challenged so no DIY for me..) but i love the space. wish i have that kinda space and layout in my house.
Roxanne M says
Seriously love your new house! I can’t wait to see what you do to it, and in what order! I’m really looking forward to the new posts, it will get me through my day :) We are also on a selling house/buying new one process. We can’t afford two mortgages though so have to wait to sell our first one to buy another. I’m hoping your luck in finding the perfect home will transfer to MN for when our time comes! If we have to renovate I ‘may’ even start a blog to document :) We’ll see!
Jen@The Decor Scene says
WOW what a great house. So much potential and so many great projects will come out of this home. Congrats again. Lots of luck!!! :)
Tiffany says
Love the house tour! My fiance and I just moved into our first house together about a month ago, and our downstairs is remarkably similar to your new house – right down to the horizontal wood paneling in our living room. We have tons of stained wood trim throughout the entire house, so I feel your pain on none of the trim being white. I can’t wait to see what you all do with the new space, and am especially excited to see how you tackle the wood paneling downstairs, because we haven’t made up our minds yet about what we’re going to do with ours.
Christi says
Love the new house!
However, I was watching the Kentucky Derby and the horse named ORB won and I told Brad… “Oil Rubbed Bronze” won!!! He almost took away my beer but i then explained ORB and YHL!

So. Much. Potential! We LOVE our upstairs laundry room, especially since it’s right outside our master bedroom. Also, I love the bench wrapped around the tree on your deck – are you planning on keeping that?

We love that little bench but the tree is dying and squeezing against the bench :(

LOVE the bones of the new place – and I can’t wait to see how you guys make it your own!
Katherine says
I love it! Can’t wait to see what you guys do with it. The glimpse we got of the backyard looks amazing!
Tracey says
Will you guys be doing a post on what kind of design direction you’re going to go in? Are you going to do something similar to the second house or change it up again?
YoungHouseLove says
We still change our minds every second but we’ll definitely share style thoughts that we have along the way!

Thanks for showing us the new digs! Your ranches have been uber cute, but I’m partial to two story traditionals; needless to say I’m pumped about this house! Also, that sunroom is AMAZING.
Tana Minnick says
You’re house is soooo similiar to our house! Right down to an odd wet bar (that we took out). I kept wondering if you moved to our neighborhood. I can’t wait to see what you do with it.
You’re going to love the kitchen window (I refused to buy a house without a view to the outside), and the garage right off the kitchen is awesome too – that’s another thing we looked for – convenient access to the garage.

I’m so excited to see what you do with the new place. Some parts of that house reminded me so much of the house I grew up in in Virginia!

Elle says
What kind of condition are your kitchen cabinets in? I ask because mine are terrible so if we redo the kitchen, just painting them is *not* an option so it’s going to be pricey. I’m jealous of all the people who say they’re completely redoing their kitchen but then get to paint the cabinets.
Also for the corner cabinets in the dining room, we didn’t know what to do with ours either, but now it has tchotchkes from our travels or from our families that don’t really “go” with other things in the house. Since it’s all contained together it works, sort of like with the different items you had on your frame wall. You could also totally house the menagerie of white ceramic animals and paint the back walls a bright color, like the built ins in your current/2nd house dining room. Ooo, or, OR – I just remembered when you did the “one table x ways” posts back in your first house. The cabinets are perfect for something like that!
YoungHouseLove says
I love those posts! We have to bring them back! And as for the cabinets there are some in so bad shape that there’s no saving them, although we’ll live with them for a nice long time just to be sure we know what we love and what we want to change :)
