Now that we’re wrapping things up at our current house and we’ve spilled the new house beans it’s like we’ve finally given ourselves permission to LOSE. OUR. MINDS. So yeah, this new house video tour is full of chirpy excitement that only a home in your dream neighborhood can produce. Forgive me. It’s not a good look. And watching it produces the same embarrassment that my way-too-enthusiastic mom elicited back in high school. Which confirms that I’m turning into her. Uh oh…
Woop, there it is. The first set of stairs we ever owned, and the house that’s attached to them.
A few notes:
- I’m not awkward at all in the beginning.
- We used John’s phone to “time stamp” this video thanks to Googling “today’s date” on Friday when we filmed it. We’re nothing if not high tech around here.
- Drinking game: count how many times I say love.
- Keep an eye out for John’s finger coming into frame to tell me which direction to walk (yes, he holds the camera and I walk next to him to chat since his description of the house would be three sentences mixed with long silences and if I held the camera you’d lose your lunch).
- Sorry about the audio getting odd in a few areas (empty rooms have weird echoes and it turns out the bathroom fan upstairs is crazy loud on film).
- I sing about stairs. My life is officially a musical.
- Ahhhhhhh! I can’t think of any more. Did I mention we’re crazy excited?!
Oh and please bear with us when it comes to questions about our plans and the ol’ to do list that we’re compiling. We promise we’ll whip up a floor plan post and share our new masterlist with all of our To-Dos on it as soon as we have those laid out (we’re still in that changing-our-minds-every-second phase). It might be a little while before we’ve fully segued into the full new house mindset since we still live in our current house and definitely have a lot of stuff on our plates with selling it, getting packed up, and moving.
And now, I’ll end this with a completely understated “AHHHHHHHHHHH!” and another big wet kiss for you guys. So excited to share this next chapter with you. Also if you’re my mom and you’re reading this, I’m not that scared of turning into you. Except that none of my shoes will fit anymore…
Meagan {Green Motherhood} says
It’s such a cute house! I have so many friends who grew up in similarly styled houses; it’s so good for a family.
I’m so impressed that y’all are moving in in its current state(aren’t you?) I would be terrified of that carpet and the broken tile! You brave souls!
Just wondering if y’all ever sage your houses before moving into them. You know, “to clean the air” from past owners baggage?
YoungHouseLove says
Ooh I’ve never done that but it looks fun! I forget what show I watched someone do it. Looked peaceful! I think the previous owners had a great life there, so we hope we have smooth sailing when we move in :)

Is it just a coincidence that you’ve always had them, or are sun rooms a big thing in your area? We rarely see them in neighborhoods around here…jealous!
YoungHouseLove says
I think they’re really common in RVA (lots of homes we checked out have had them) but I had never heard of them until we moved down here!

Plein Jane says
I’m sort of an office geek, so I loved when you built your awesome desks. So sad you have to leave them behind! How/where will you work until you can build replacements? Will you share that tiny little desk area in the kitchen? Ha!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha I’m not sure! We might do the laptops on the couch thing… or use our little white desk (the one in the living room) while someone else uses the little kitchen desk…

Samantha says
Super cute house! I wish I could find something like that here in Colorado
Stefanie says
Oh man. Watching that video has me itching to run over there and start ripping up carpet and pulling down curtains. I can’t believe you guys have managed to hold off so far! What a wonderful house full of projects to do :)
Paige @ Little Nostalgia says
You guys are going to have so. many. projects! I’m so excited to see what you do! And you’re right, this one needs a ton more work than the current house. This is right up your alley. :-)
Briel K. says
So much potential!
Not sure if this has been mentioned. Will you be bringing the console that is behind Karl to the new house? We hardly see it and I know it’s huge but it’s always been one of my favorite projects for some reason.
YoungHouseLove says
Yes, I think we want to bring that with us and possibly adjust the length to work with Karl if we reconfigure him to be smaller :)

Meleah says
Great vid. We fell in love with some homes like that. In fact, one was in the running when picking our new home. :)
Andrea says
Love the potential of the new house!! I see a mix of rustic and modern working really well in this house!!
Side note-Did you happen to see a horse named Orb won the Kentucky Derby?? When they first showed the horses name I literally thought it was O.R.B. and thought wow that person must really love oil rubbed bronze if they named their horse after it. Then I instantly felt stupid after realizing my mistake. Gotta love a DIY mind!!
YoungHouseLove says
Isn’t that funny?! ORB for the win!

Sammi says
Love the house! There’s so much potential waiting for you guys.
That little nook in the kitchen would be so cute if you turned it into a desk area for Clara to color and do homework. Just my opinion though :).
Congrats!
YoungHouseLove says
Love that idea!

Melissa says
Oh, you guys are going to have a field day bring this house to life. Congratulations!
I know none of your plans are set in stone, but do you think you’ll try to keep in character with the more traditional style of the house, or modern it up a bit? It’s hard for me to see past how it looks now, but I know you guys are going to make it look amazing. I can’t wait to follow along the journey over the next few years! It’s been so exciting following along since your first home.
YoungHouseLove says
We definitely think we’ll respect and consider the style of the house but I definitely think it’ll still feel like us. Maybe a mixture of fresh and color and classic traditional touches?

Gretchen Phillips says
Sherry, dear, you’re too hard on yourself! I know, I know, it’s always hard to watch/listen to oneself on video, but you guys did a great tour. And you should be excited! It’s a wonderful house, you’re going to have so much fun, and it’s going to end up looking GORGEOUS! Congratulations again!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Gretchen! It’s like listening to your own voice on the answering machine- makes me cringe! Haha!

April says
Have you decided on a wall that your going to put your frames on from your current hallway of picture frames? I’m anxious to know where all those frames are going!! Very exciting! I guess there’s always the wall going down the stairway?!
YoungHouseLove says
John actually isn’t convinced that we should just transplant that gallery wall somewhere in the new house (meanwhile I’m dying to) so we’ll have to see where we end up!

Vaish says
I cant seem to watch the video, Im not sure if anyone else is having problems. I even updated my flash player-no dice.
YoungHouseLove says
Anyone else having issues? It’s just a youtube.com video, so maybe click on the title of the video to be taken to youtube.com to watch it? Or if you’re at work they might have just blocked it from your computer :)

This house will certainly keep you busy for quite some time. I cannot BELIEVE that even the doors are painted blue. Gah!
And the intercom totally reminded me of my next door neighbor’s home growing up. Her mom was always shouting at us through the intercom. ;)
YoungHouseLove says
Hahah!

love it! so similar to some of our lovely finishes before we gutted our current house- eighties country fab with horrible carpet… and yay for second floor laundry rooms- we love ours, cuts down on the hauling, and everyone oohs and aahs over it (hoping they continue to when we sell someday :) )
Cara Barbieri says
I don’t know what it is about Virginia houses and the funky colored trim! We bought our house in Fredericksburg a little over a year ago and we have peach doors and trim upstairs. Bleh! I can wait to get it painted over.
Courtney says
LOVE this house! So much potential for sure! :) We are just moving into a house in our dream neighborhood too so I’m excited to see your projects while we work on ours! We have fifty different colors (and types) of trim too! And TONS of wallpaper borders! But I’m so excited to make it ours, just like I’m sure you guys are! :) And I loved the excited voice…I’m sure mine would be much worse lol!
Okay…one random question and then I will stop going on and on :)
Are you planning on using the kitchen cabinets or completely replacing them? I actually liked their style and they look like they are in decent shape so I was curious! In our new kitchen the cabinets are good quality and in good shape, but are not my style at all so I’m trying to decide what to do! Maybe you guys will inspire our kitchen reno! :)
YoungHouseLove says
We’re definitely going to live with them for a while to see if things work for us (we usually don’t do kitchen renos for a year or two so we can figure out what works and what doesnt) but a few of them are in really rough shape up front, so we might have to see what we can do :)

Ahhh! I am so excited for you! I just painted my fireplace last week and am OBSESSED!! Can’t wait to see what you do :)

Well, welcome to your “slinky” house.
When I was a kid I lived in a ranch house and so did everyone I knew. Someone showed me a Slinky toy, you know, the spring action coil of fun! I knew that if only my house had stairs I could get a slinky and get some of that down the stairs sproinging Slinky happiness. So, when I got my current house (two stories – yea!) my first purchase was a slinky. It is worth it. Just get a metal one if you can to get the full experience. Clara and Burger will love you even more than they do today.
Wishing you years of happiness in your Slinky house.

Oh my goodness, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. I’m so excited to see what you two do with the place.
Amy says
I love that tree in the deck and the whole house is just awesome. It’s going to be so much fun to watch you guys redesign everything. Thanks for taking us along on the journey!
Barbara says
I must say, you both have incredible imaginations. I look and think boxy, boxy, boxy!! But then, I don’t have Wonder Petersik around to tear out and build stuff!
I am really anxious to see what you do to this place – because I just can’t see it – which makes it very fun!
Christina says
I only started following your blog last year so it’s kinda exciting to see you guys start all over with a brand new-to-you house!
…that fireplace… Just wouldn’t seem right if you guys didn’t have another brick fireplace to work with!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha! It’s a right of passage for every Petersik house! Ha!

Ahhhh! I am so giddy for you. We have moved twice and there is nothing like walking around the space you plan to put your stamp on. So excited to watch you both turn this into a magical home. Congratulations and thanks for sharing the tour with us!
Dani says
I am sooooooo excited for you guys! What a lovely home! I love your blog and always go to it first for ideas to use in my own home. You guys inspire me! Thank you! I look forward to seeing all the wonderful things you do to this new gem of a house! Happy New Home!!!!!
Leah says
I tried to post earlier but I’m not sure if it went through… Forgive me for saying this because I am the biggest YHL fan but… the house just seems so… small and closed in compared to your home now. I know it’s nearly the same sq ft in terms of size butttt….. The current house is so open and airy. Where will you put things like Clara’s play house, kitchen, or the piece that greets you as you walk into your home now?
On a positive note, I love the deck and the brick in the living room! I know you guys will prove my doubts wrong and make it AWESOME!
YoungHouseLove says
We have no idea where anything will go, but we can’t wait to get in there and figure it out! It’s really hard to guage size from a video without a stitch of furniture in it (for example, Clara’s bedroom is about twice as big as her current room, and once we plop down the crib that’ll be a lot easier to see) so we can’t wait to get all moved in and do another tour with stuff dropped down in each room :)

Potential with a capital “P”! Can’t wait to see all of the fun stuff you do!

Am so excited to see what you will do with your new house. It’s beautiful and I am sure you will make it even more so.
Laine says
I live in Richmond too, in a very similar house, built in 1980. Ours had similarly gross carpet, and has the same slate floor in the foyer, dark wood wainscotting, and dark pine kitchen cabinets, so it’s exciting to see what you do with a similar house.
Our house also had colorful painted trim (a diff color in each room) that had been repainted white before we bought the house, but they used latex and the previous color was oil based, so it’s peeling. Since your house is the same era and same colors, I suspect it may be oil based as well, so take that into account when repainting ( you probably already thought of that, but just in case….)
Mariah S. says
So I’ve been wondering how Clara feels about moving. Obviously she’s excited about her new closet ;) but is there more she’s excited for, or anything she might miss about your current home?
YoungHouseLove says
She’s obsessed with the new house! We literally have to drag her out of there and whenever we get into the car (even just to go grocery shopping) she says “are we going to the new house?!” – and when we turn into the neighborhood she squeals “the new HOUSE!!!!!” – she can’t wait to get in there. She tells me where she wants me to put her crib and her dollhouse. It’s really cute. I think she’ll miss a lot of things from our current house (I know I will!) but kids just seem to be so flexible – she’s so into the new place it makes me wonder if she’ll even remember our current house at all. Which makes me sad so we want to make a video of it with her (and interview her about stuff she loves) so she always remembers it :)

I can’t believe you said you have mixed feelings about the dining room corner cabinets! I love them and actually just salvaged a pair almost identical to yours. They were installed in my updated 1960’s dining room 9 months ago and really look amazing with my Anthropologie dishes in them. Corners are dead space in dining rooms and I bet you will love them once they are painted white!

HOT DIGGITY, THIS IS EXCITING!! :D :D
Yeah, I’m totally excited about this New Big Adventure!
I really dig that house, and the potential is amazing.
First thing I thought of when seeing the office space (which is brilliant–away from everything else–its SO important to separate the work space from the rest of the home) is “sliding barndoor (or glass french doors) to close off that room from the rest of the house when needs be. Keep. It. Separate! :-)”
Anyways, I think this place has some of the best and most exciting possibilities of the three homes you’ve worked on, and I really appreciate the opportunity you’re giving all of us to come along for the ride.
Yay for New Big Adventures! :D *happy dance*
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Chaucea!

I CANNOT wait to see what you guys do to the kitchen. And I am super jealous of the huge deck and wooded back lot. Ah-MAZING (Happy Endings anyone?).
Suzie Smith says
AHHH!!!!! I am sooo looking forward to you taking out those bay windows for the french doors!!!!!!!!!!!! My husband and I are doing the same thing this fall with ours! Whoo too!!! Yay!! New house! New Projects!
Whitney says
Oh my goodness, you guys have so much work to do and I can’t wait! You will spiff it right up :)
Meg Sluyter says
LOVE the layout and can not WAIT to see what you guys do in there!!! Also, 1987 called, he wants his wallpaper back (and mauve trim too)!
The changes are going to be so drastic in here but you have such an awesome space to work with. Did I mention how excited I am to see what you guys do? CAN’T. WAIT. :)
esther says
So enjoyed this video! and of course you have to make a one last goodbye video of your current place to show how far its come?
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, we can’t wait until the final house tour (sniffle…)

Wooooo! So excited for you guys and sooooo excited to see how amazing you will make it look! I love seeing people go for the older fixer uppers rather than the boring, all look exactly the same, brand new houses. Good luck on your adventure!
Nicole says
This is so great! I’m OBSESSED with your enormous porch/deck! I started reading your blog a little over a year ago, and you already had so much done to your current house. I’m so excited to see you start again from the beginning — you guys always do such a phenomenal job and have such a vision for what you want. I’m as excited as you are!!
Also, I had a “hideaway” in my closet as a little girl and loved it. I’m sure Clara will too!
Ginny says
So so EXCITED for you guys!! I can only imagine the improvements you will be making! I think I can speak for all of us when I say we’ll(of course)be sticking around to see what you come up with :) This house is going to keep you busy. Are you getting any sleep at night? I’d be up thinking about all the changes I’d want to make! haha!
YoungHouseLove says
Lately we’ve been collapsing into bed and sleeping HARD! Selling and planning a move is tiring! Haha! But sometimes in the morning I wake up early and just lay in bed thinking about all of the new house possibilities…

AHHHH right back! I love it. Is it weird that I had a huge smile when I was watching that video? My husband noticed it and may or may not have picked on me about it. :)
Tina Gibson says
Congratulations! I’m so excited for you. Can’t wait to see what you come up with. I’m guessing Country Chic isn’t in the plans – too bad!
Rae says
This video confirms my suspicion that we have twin houses! Intercoms, wallpaper, the works. So many of our neighbors, like us, also have the random wet bar. We call it the Mad Men feature.
I am eager to see what you do with the dining room windows, as we have the same window layout: the left window is super close to the adjacent wall, so curtain rods are tricky.
Also, we have very little trouble with our kids slipping on the wood stairs that we rescued from old carpet.
Hillary says
Wow! LOVE the floor plan! My mom taught me about a few ideal things to have in a home: a garage off of the kitchen for carrying in groceries, a laundry room upstairs in a two-story home, and a kitchen and family room in the back of the house for privacy…or just for pretending that you’re not at home when the doorbell rings! :o) Also, loving Clara’s skylight in her closet–what a fun place to hide away!! So happy for each of you. Congratulations!
Paula says
Wow, the house is awesome!!! Sooo much potential, I can see why you fell in love with it! :D
Jennifer says
This house is going to keep you busy for a long while, which I know is a good thing for you guys. Get your paintbrushes ready! I’m nearing the end of renovating my house and all of the new house excitement is GONE, lol.
Tina says
Part of me is embarrassed how excited I am to follow your next adventure. But as I watch that, all I could think of was “So. Much. Blue. Trim.!!!!” Wow, good luck with all that!
