There’s a party in my pantry. And everyone’s invited. Although, it’s not really a party. And the pantry is far too small to host any sort of gathering. Hmmm. This invitation is going over just about as smoothly as Brick Tambland’s.
But back to the pantry. See it there, hiding in the back of the kitchen by the fridge?
This is the only “before” I could find of it with the door open. By all the wallpaper and brown trim I could’ve sworn this was from before we moved in, but something about it being stocked with our mess of food tells me this is post-move. #sherlocking
Regardless of when the photo was snapped, you can see that it was – how should I put it? – lacking in any sort of order and organization. Except for maybe the artfully jumbled pile of bags on the floor. I’ll wait while you pin it.
Our initial treatment of that space was not at all indicative of our excitement to finally have a legit pantry. In our first house we just stocked food in some upper cabinets, and in our last one we had a pretty intense pantry-cabinet contraption that was equally functional and frustrating. So having a standard pantry closet (like the ones we both had growing up) is a welcome change for us.
And thankfully, over the last eight months of living with it (and getting increasingly frustrated by our lack of function), we’ve come up with a few ideas to make it work a lot better for us. First off, we wanted to move our microwave in there. I know it’s not your usual placement for a microwave, but since removing our hulking over-the-range microwave, we wanted a better spot than on the counter – and we’ve had luck with a microwave that was hidden behind a cabinet door in our last kitchen (we don’t use it very often, and we really liked that setup).
So because we had a good experience concealing our last microwave, relocating this one to our nice deep pantry felt like the way to go. There would be ample room for ventilation on the sides and back of it – and we’d keep the door open while it’s in use. The only hitch was that there was no outlet in the pantry. Until recently…
We actually got this done about a month or so ago (you may have noticed that the microwave has been MIA for a little while). Right before Christmas we had our go-to electricians swing by one morning and add an outlet right where we wanted it, to the tune of $110. And with that, the microwave had a spot to plug-in, our counter was clearer, and the pantry felt one step closer to being more functional for us.
We’ve been using it that way for over a month now and it has worked out well. Except that to make room for the microwave, we had to lose one of the existing shelves. Simple solution: reposition the shelves to capitalize on that unused space. But sometimes the simplest solutions take weeks to make it to the top of our to-do list.
Yesterday we finally emptied the pantry (a fun task full of exciting discoveries like “I didn’t know we still had cookies back here!”) and went to work adjusting the shelves. Our original plan had been to lower the bottom shelf (with the microwave on it) so that the shelf above it could go back in the same spot. But we’ve since moved our trash can in there too, so we couldn’t go any lower without obstructing the can from opening.
Trash can sidenote: we moved that into the pantry over a month ago on a trial basis with the worry that it could stink up the whole space or otherwise annoy us, but sort of like how a trash can under the sink doesn’t seem to be an issue – especially when it has a lid to seal it – this one has been fine in there. Even with a pregnant wife who currently has a werewolf-like sense of smell.
Instead of lowering the microwave shelf to make room for another shelf above it, we opted to put the missing shelf back in above the microwave shelf. But by hanging that one a little higher, it would create sort of a half-shelf that’s perfect for cans and smaller pantry items. So I, very technically, used a pasta sauce jar to mark how much space we’d want.
The next part was really easy. I used my crowbar to pry off the existing braces (which were just nailed in) and marked level lines where they needed to be re-installed.
Then using my level to double-check myself, I screwed them back into place where we wanted them.
The whole thing took about an hour, and most of that was spent emptying the pantry, taking pictures for you guys, and eating back-of-the-pantry discoveries. Once it was completed we were inordinately excited to test out our new small-things shelf. It’s really nice to have a “bonus shelf” for those shorter items that used to get shoved to the back or clutter up the other shelves.
We didn’t bother to restock the whole pantry yet because (as you can probably tell) there’s still more to be done. Primarily: priming, painting, and further organizing those shelves. We’re planning to add a few more systems to keep things organized on those bigger shelves, and might even hang some added storage on the door. Sherry has also been thinking about using some cheery wipeable shelf paper or something, so this pantry party is best described as half-baked.
After we’re done painting and everything’s dry we can actually organize it so it looks a bit more appetizing and less like a grocery store mid-looting. And then we’ll be back with the end result.
Man, it looks so nice empty and clean like that. Then again, the rest of the kitchen looks like this, so I guess it’s not really a long term solution.
How do you guys have your pantry organized? Do you have certain bins and systems that you love? Have you drooled over those amazing room-like pantries on Pinterest? Sometimes I catch Sherry just gazing at them and muttering things like “magical unicorn pantry.”
Also, let me know if anyone is throwing a pantry party anytime soon. I’ll bring my friend Brick. He’s a hoot.

In our house pantry space is too precious to house a microwave & trash can LOL, but maybe I’m a grocery hoarder?! I have actually considered converting a small room next to the kitchen into a walk-in pantry because our floor-to-ceiling pantry cabinet is overflowing…
Don’t you have a trash compactor taking up space in your peninsula, just wondering if you really need a separate trash can? I had an old compactor in my kitchen and I ultimately replaced it with a 2nd dishwasher (18″), but I wish I would have put figured out how to replace it with a trash cabinet since it would be so much more convenient than having to walk across the kitchen when I need to toss something…
YoungHouseLove says
Yes, that crazy trash compactor has been broken since the inspection, so I’d love to get it out and use that space in the peninsula for something that actually works!

Question – even if the compactor is broken and doesn’t compact the trash, can you still use it as a trash can? I should know this since I had one in my kitchen when I bought the house but I was afraid to open it haha!
YoungHouseLove says
We have just been telling Clara not to touch it since it’s so heavy and could smash her little fingers, and since she’s of the age of throwing out her own garbage it’s easier to use the trash can we have. But it’s a smart idea to use that space for something better than an old broken finger-smashing machine!

Sherry – I love this post and recently did something pretty similar! My husband and I just bought our first place – a 100+ year old Georgian that was a foreclosure last summer. Unfortunately, the entire place had to be rewired and it had absolutely NO kitchen left (we knew both of these things when we bid on it… the previous owners took EVERYTHING – including the kitchen sink). Fortunately, my step-dad is a retired and awesome electrician. He’s made it safe (and it has passed all inspections and permits!) and put outlets everywhere I needed them – which is easier said than done with plaster walls and it’s been amazing – especially in the kitchen. We have lots of power in the mini-walk in pantry(hello microwave & Keurig!) and made sure that there is enough voltage where it won’t send me going to the basement to flip switches every morning. Which is a total gamechanger.
Another thing we did in the pantry that I totally recommend if you have time and the tools for is to add a simple trim to the edges of all of the shelves – nothing fancy (but it gives is a nice finish especially since the house has such old and trimmy details everywhere else). The actual reason I did it, though, was because there are narrow shelves along the wall that you walk along to get to the microwave and keurig. So i had the trim come up a centimeter on those to prevent stuff from being knocked over or falling off. Perfect for bottles and cans and what have yous. On the wider ones, I used the extra centimeter to hang below so things can slide right out. Perfect for cereal boxes and heavier stuff. Looks seamless and is totally functional.
We painted the entire inside a glossy white for easy clean up for the inevitable sugar spill and honey leak.
I just had another outlet added to the side of the island and it’s the best.
So glad you’re on your way and happy with yours!! :) Do I win for longest post ever? I would have just posted a link but I haven’t blogged about it yet. :)

i am seriously jealous of your pantry!! we don’t have a traditional pantry and it sucks!! we don’t even really have enough cabinet space to put anything. all of our kitchen cabinets are full of kitchen stuff and our laundry cabinets (they are the same room) are full of laundry/household stuff. thankfully there was a space between a wall and our fireplace that we were able to put one of those metal racks that you usually see in garages. it works well enough, but the uneven surface drives me crazy when i try to put cans on them because they constantly tip over or get caught on the little ledges.
Jules says
This looks great! I used your Clara lined chest of drawers project as inspiration and lined all of my kitchen cabinets with awesome B/W damask wrapping paper from Michael’s and Mod-Podged it in there. The shelves got 3 coats of Mod-Podge and the backs of the cabinets (because it needs to look pretty when I open it) got two coats of Mod-Podge. I get many compliments on how it looks and it’s holding up really well.
Since I’ve done that, I’m never going to be happy with plain ole shelf paper any longer; there’s just way too many cool prints out there to settle.
Have fun with Phase 2!

We have a wall-type pantry that the shelving is 12″ deep but stretchs a nice 7′ w/ two sets of floor to ceiling double doors. I have it organized by snacky stuff on one end and meal stuff on the other. My kids are 2 1/2 & 6 so I keep their snacks towards the lower shelves so they can reach and all the junky food/snacks towards the top shelves. I take all the crackers out of their boxes and put them in their own respective clear air-tight storage container. This not only helps to keep them fresher, but the kids can actually see what it is since they can’t read the box, plus it also makes for a handy way to grab n go on a picnic or outside snack time in the summer. I put the raisins & fruitsnacks in stacking bins that I actually found at Lowes in the tool dept…ya know, they red or blue open faced bins that my husband would use to sort his bolts, etc in the garage…well, they also make for fun pantry sorters and the colors coordinated w/ the red lids on my storage containers. Yeah! On the meal side of the pantry I have it all sorted by boxed items, then cereals, then canned items, then baking goods…all soups are together, all fruits are together, etc. I also rotate the items when I shop so the oldest items are always in front to avoid expiration. The system works for us…and I say whatever works for your family is what you have to go with. Happy organizing!

Are your doors solid wood? What about cutting the door in half, getting hinges and a 2nd door knob for the left side and having the split door open french door style? Smaller doors, ligher, you could open only one side if you knew something you wanted was on the left or the right.
YoungHouseLove says
That could be fun! We’re actually hanging french pantry doors in the showhouse and love that look! I think we’re too scared to just wack ours in half though, and it’s not too much trouble to just swing open the whole door since it’s not overwhelmingly heavy or anything.

We have a large-ish pantry with two bifold doors – that the fridge door bangs into when you open it, but I use bins from target or pilfered from around the house to organize things. Like there a kids snack bin, a specific fruit snack bin that I just empty all the pouches into. An adult snack bin, pasta bin, etc. it helps me to know where things are and makes it easier to check if I’m out of something on grocery day.
It does make it much harder to forget I’ve got cookies though.

Pam says
Not a short term solution but what if you took out the cabinets and desk and made that an open pantry (ala Pioneer Woman)? If you don’t like an open pantry, you could enclose it. You could use the current pantry as a mop/broom/cleaning products closet with your trash bin.
YoungHouseLove says
That could work too, although we like having that counter space for now (and those cabinets hold all of our tools) so we’re liking their function for now.

We have a pantry around the corner from our kitchen in the family room (not ideal but better than no pantry). The wire shelves were driving me nuts so I removed the bottom portion of them and put in a set of Elfa drawers that fits 3 fairly deep drawers with a counter on top. It amazes me how much fits in those drawers (chips, cookies, granola bars, crackers, etc.) for my family of five and how with the drawers it’s super easy to find what you’re looking for. I kept the shelves above for canned goods though.

I declared war on our pantry last month after not being able to find anything. We actually have quite a hefty hunk of space – it’s bascially a sectioned off corner, so it’s got kind of an even “L” shape of wire racks going up it. It’s a welcome change from apartment living, but the sizable chunk from floor to first shelf is taken up by my husband’s home brew supplies, pet food, and the seasonal beers I’ve been hoarding for as soon as this baby pops out (8 weeks until pumpkin beer drinking commences… I’m not kidding at all).
On the door to the pantry we use the elfa spice and oil rack shelving system we splurged on back when we were in an apartment, which is nice because it gets all the small bits that get lost in a pantry in an easy to see and access place. I highly recommend, despite its (to me) absurd price tag – it really doubles storage space in there. Since the wire racks are pretty flimsy, I’ve got things grouped into roughly shoe boxed sized clear plastic containers and labeled with dry erase stickers (pasta, soups, tea & coffee, etc). It’s not as elegant as those glass container/beautifully printed labels pantries of pinterest, but it’s definitely a lot more practical for us.

Our pantry is in our laundry room. We live in a ranch style home that was opened up by a previous owner. They added hookups for a washer and dryer on the main floor (awesome) and a bunch of shelving. It isn’t super pretty or awesome BUT it’s close to the kitchen and we can store our laundry/cleaning on one side (above washer) and pantry/food items on the other side (above dryer). We did put an elfa door system on the inside of the door for extra food storage and it’s pretty awesome!
Also, we painted the little room red, kind of a wine red so it’s fun.

I don’t have a pantry, so I have to be creative with my cabinet space like you guys did in your 1st home. This past weekend I went to put some soup away (there was a 10/$10 sale so I bought 10 even though I didn’t really need that many or have room for them) which then led to me being forced to reorganize/clean.
It turned in to me yelling into the other room, informing my husband of the crazy expiration dates of food I found…like popcorn with a 2011 use by date, or a single box of raisins that pretty much had formed one giant raisin….or that we don’t need any more BBQ sauce, after finding 4 unopened bottles.

I keep my lidded trashcan in the pantry next to a large canvas bin which holds all my extras. Paper bags go between the canvas bin and the wall and plastic bags are in a Container Store bag minder.
I have an over-the-door rack with three long, narrow baskets for canned goods and sundry items. Three tier risers display jars of peanut butter, jams, and assorted baking items.
I use Container Store Linus stacking bins for small boxes of dried pasta and brownie and cake mixes. The sides don’t slope so you can get the maximum use out of them.
My Ziploc bags, aluminum foil, and such stay in these square bins from Target’s (Dollar)Spot. The bins keep everything standing up on their sides (taking up less space) and are pretty easy to grab so I can get whatever item I need. They’re also the perfect size for napkins, so I keep a large stack in there so I don’t have to keep that massive napkin block on hand.
I have found that keeping my cereals in the grip cereal containers from Target very helpful — this way I know exactly how much I have and when I’ll need to get more.
I keep spices and my sugars and flours out on the counter and my disposable dining ware in a small basket on the fridge.
I only cook for one right now so I buy produce on an as-needed basis.

In my parents’ last house they had an ginormous walk-in pantry, right off the kitchen that was big enough to hold a freezer and enough food for the apocalypse. Ugh. Don’t even talk to me. You have a pantry. My pantry consists if four double upper cabinets. It’s really frustrating at times and I wish I had an actual pantry. ONE DAY I want to move my fridge over one cabinet width and get it off the wall and put a full pantry cabinet in there. ONE DAY!!
Why didn’t you like the second house pantry? My SIL had one like in your second house and she liked it. I’d love to hear more of your opinion there!

The issue with that pantry for us was that in order to access certain things, you had to pull out multiple shelves in front of them (and they could be on the back or the front of a shelf since both sides had storage). So the act of searching for an old can of beans that you knew was in there somewhere turned into a swiss-army-like cabinet formation where they all had to be pulled out so we could look behind things and check the backs of them. It just wasn’t easy to survey what you had at all since everything was layered like a Bloomin’ Onion.
