We already talked about how much we love the Kurv (we’re not paid by them or otherwise perk’d in any way, we just truly love it) and now we’re even more excited because the day has finally come that we’ve discovered a full sized vacuum cleaner that we love just as much! Really, it sucks like a champ. And when we pair the carpet-friendly nature and the sheer power of our new addition with the super portable and wood-floor-friendly Kurv, the dust bunnies and tiny puppy hairs on our floors don’t stand a chance. Seriously, our house has never looked (or felt, because that’s important too) so clean.
We realized we needed to replace our sad excuse for a full sized vacuum known as the Dirt Devil Vibe Quick Vac (more like a leaf-blower as it actually blew out more dust than it sucked in) before the baby came, especially because it tried to kill me whenever I cleaned up during allergy season (seriously, I’m not kidding when I say that it blew things up and out into the air). It was really our fault when we decided it was a good idea to invest all of forty dollars on a vacuum cleaner. I mean what did we expect? So this time around we did some research and actually went into vacuuming shopping with a list of things we wanted:
- A HEPA filter (which helps keep allergies and other airborne pollutants at bay)
- A bagless variety (also great for allergies and simpler to operate for un-bag-coordinated people like me)
- A reasonably light-weight model (anything over 20 lbs, no matter how much power it has, is a bit much for a 5’2″ gal)
- Significantly more power than our previous model (which only boasted 8 amps)
- More settings for different jobs so it can effectively clean multiple surfaces (some area rugs in the house need extra suction while the hardwood floors need something geared for that purpose).
Your list might not be the same as ours at all (different strokes for different folks) but we highly recommend the idea of walking into any big household purchased like this with an idea of what you want from the get-go. It really helps to keep things from getting overwhelming since you can immediately whittle down all the options since they can’t all possibly meet your previously established criteria. It’s a nice little filtering method that allows you to hone in on a few models that seem to fit the bill and then you can do additional research or ask any questions about those few contenders to make the final decision.
Ladies and gentlemen, here’s what we ended up whittling down as our winner, the Bissell 82H1 Cleanview Helix Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner:
And since that name is such a mouthful, let’s just call him the newest member of our family. This guy has 12 amps of power and multiple settings (five to be exact, so you can add extra carpet suction or turn it to a more hardwood floor friendly setting). He also comes equipped with something called a Helix Dirt Separation System for deeper and more powerful cleaning. Of course he’s bagless (and has an easy-empty dirt cup) and has a HEPA filter as well. Plus he even has extra perks (like adjustable height settings and also comes with a slew of extra fittings like a TurboBrush, crevice tool, extension wand, and upholstery/dusting brush). Plus he’s just 15 lbs so he falls under my 20-or-less rule. And after reading many many customer reviews on a number of sites (thanks to our iPhone we could do that right in the store on the spot) we were confident that it was a great choice (it had over 40 five-star ratings on Amazon).
Perhaps the best news of all was the price. Our new friend happened to be on sale at Target (down from $80 to $69 just for the weekend) so although we walked into the store intending to spend around $200 for something that would last, all the high-ratings and the fact that it met and exceeded all of our previously set requirements had us feeling like we’d struck gold.
But back to my story. When I got home I broke it out on our grubbiest carpet (the yellow one in the living room was full of grime from lots of indoor-outdoor snowy-and leafy-foot traffic traffic as of late) and it seriously lifted every last bit of dust and dirt (John watched as the carpet literally got yellower and less brown before our very eyes). It looked brandy new again. Oh happy day. And it worked just as well on the hardwood floors (I got giddy when I got to change the setting from carpeting to hardwood- it felt so custom and fancy). I even took the upholstery brush for a spin on our sofa (it picked up every last hair, fleck of dust, etc).
Who knew cleaning could be fun? I was perma-smiling like a stepford wife with my new vacuum cleaner by my side. So that’s the story of our latest housecleaning weapon that I’m relieved downright psyched to have on hand before the bean arrives in May. After all, one of my resolutions this year is to simplify things and keep our house running more efficiently and easily. And this guy will definitely make cleaning stuff up much simpler than our former leaf-blower ever did. And I bet I won’t go to sleep with a runny nose every time I vacuum during allergy season anymore. Somebody stop me before I lift this machine up in the air and start singing “for he’s a jolly good fellow.”
Oh and just to be totally clear, Bissell didn’t pay us or otherwise perk us (nor did Target, Amazon or anyone else) to mention this vacuum. It’s actually the one that we researched and paid for ourselves because we thought it was the best thing since sliced bread and we wanted to share our find. So this post isn’t one big ad as much as one big weird love-fest for a new vacuum from an extremely appreciative homeowner. But let’s talk about your lean mean cleaning machines. Any other Bissell lovers out there? Any fancy Dyson peeps (I ogled the white pet-hair model for what felt like hours)? Anyone who doesn’t believe in vacuum cleaners and peacefully coexists with dustbunnies? Let’s talk about what sucks at your house.

My parents recently bought a second Dyson All-Floors because they gave the first to my sister who moved away. They believe it is one of the best investments ever because they are also extreme clean freaks and feel that hygiene cannot be compromised. (They have tried many vacuum cleaners in the past 25 years.) As one reader mentioned, we have to be careful with the Dyson sucking up the carpet if it happens to be loose because the suction is so powerful but one can really feel confident that the house is clean with this investment.

We just bought a Bissel last month, we got the pet hair model (pugs shed a lot!). It is so much better than the Roomba we had been using, I didn’t realize what a poor job our Roomba (which was dying a slow death) had been doing lately until I brought the Bissel home. Our’s was on sale at Target too! I love that the middle canister can be removed to use on stairs or furniture, definitely worth the investment.
Happy cleaning!

@Tracie, we have two little dogs who shed all the time and we used to own a Bissel Pro Heat 2 steam cleaner. It lasted for about a year, then ended up being a hot mess. Now we rent a Rug Doctor from our local grocery store for $30 whenever we need to clean our rugs. I don’t feel it’s worth it to invest in a steam cleaner of our own.
As far as vacuum cleaners, I swear by my Oreck. I know they are quite expensive ($300-ish), but they are ultra light (8 lbs.), they do make hypoallergenic bags, and they are so basic to operate, yet so powerful. The service is excellent (there are stores everywhere in my area). Oreck also makes a smaller Iron Man canister vacuum that is the only thing that can get pet hair off the seats of my car and our sofa cushions. Drawback is that the Iron Man is extremely loud. I live in a 3-level townhome, so I needed a vacuum under 10 lbs. since I spend a lot of time running up and down the stairs.

We bought a vacuum on sale at Target when we first moved into our (tiny) apartment, and for a while we thought it was broken. Turns out we hadn’t hooked up the hose correctly. Score one for the vacuum cleaner I guess. But now it works great, and it was only $40! Hard to beat for a vacuum that we only intend to keep for a couple years because we’ll be moving across the country again!
Still, that Kurv is soooo pretty, I may just put it on my birthday wish list…

I am so enjoying watching you guys in nesting mode. Sherry, no spec of dirt stands a chance in your house now that you’re in the 3rd trimester :)
Enjoy the rest of your preggo time, not just with John and Burger, but with your house getting all the love – soon it will be 99% Beanette and 1% house!

We have a pup w/ long hair (english springer) that my husband is allergic to, so instead of getting allergy shots he did a bunch of research and came home w/ a dyson animal. We LOVE LOVE LOVE it (though Winston cowers in fear in the corner), and so far have been able to avoid the allergist. Money well spent, in my opinion. :)

You might want to consider LASTING Quality over time when purchasing a vacuum. You may find many BIG BOX retailer vacuums are OUTSTANDING that first year or two… and then 4 years down the road are junk in the trash. When purchasing a vacuum, you may want to check out an actual vacuum store in your community. We just spent a small fortune on a vacuume… a RICCAR. As we were in the vacuum store, women were stopping in with there 18 year old vacuums for MINOR repairs, raving about their LASTING quality of the RICCAR (made in America). I don’t want to be throwing heaps of vacuum in the trash every 5 years anymore. Just a thought.. I am NOT telling you to buy a RICCAR, I am just alerting everyone to consider what is INSIDE and if it has the quality to stand the test of time… or if it will ROCK for 3 years – 5 years and then fizzle out (like my two previous ones did).

We bought the Bissell Healthy Home a few years ago and I still love it. It has certainly been abused with 3 boys and a 100 pound lab constantly coming in and out of the house, but it keeps going strong.

I also have incredibly terrible allergies so I know the need for a vacuum that doesn’t blow dust into the air while you’re attempting to clean. I have had two Dyson vacuums and my *personal* experience was terrible. They don’t clean very well, the attachments didn’t work, and emptying the canister made me sick (at the time also didn’t have a willing husband who could empty it).
My life changed for the best when I stumbled into a shop that has been selling vacuums and sewing machines for 70 years. It was there that I discovered the Royal Everlast. This beast cost me $300 but is completely solid and has been issue free for the past five years. I’m not a fan of creating waste with vacuum bags but this thing is solidly built with very little plastic and I honestly don’t ever see replacing the vacuum. The guy in the shop still services vacuums bought in the 50’s! Yes, I’m a total dork who is in love with her vacuum.

My brother worked at Dyson for 2 years so all of our family members got the wonder-vacuums for gifts. Lucky, I know!
Also, I got the Kurv per your recommendation…I swear, I’m like a lemming running off a cliff with you guys…although when I run off the cliff it’s not a scary dangerous fall to my death, it’s a wonderful new world filled with beautiful home decor ideas and glorious budget finds to make life easier, cleaner, and better.
Maybe you should put that on a new “testimonial” page on here? ha ha.
Anyway, love that Kurv and I heart you guys.

I posted above about my vacuum. The vacuum store I visited also sold Dysons. We could not puchase this brand because the head was not adjustable. We have Freize (spelling?) carpet. The store warned me the Dyson is powerful, and could potentially eat up my carpet with out being able to adjust the head! They alerted me it might also void any carpet warrantly I might have… so you also need to consider the kind of carpet you have. (We didn’t pick our carpet.. it was new in our home when we purchased).
Katy says
We actually got one VERY similar to this for a wedding gift. I think I registered for it at Target, and it cost around $100. You may have a slightly different model, but gotta love the Bissell vacs! We have wood and high pile carpet and a huge rug in our home, along with tile in the kitchen and bathroom, and this baby works great on all surfaces. Definitely a good buy!

Bissell is literally the only way to go if you have a pet!!! I also keep watching the infomercial for the new Shark Steam mop and drool. Every time I swiffer I tell my husband how much cleaner the Shark would make things. Is it sad that’s what I want for my anniversary???

We have a Dyson, the DC07 All Floors model. I wanted one first but hubby thought it was crazy….until he saw a demo at Home Depot and bought one on his own. We love it.

I think we have the exact same vacuum, except maybe an older model (ours is purple instead of blue?), but everything else looks exactly the same. I love it! (We too had a 40$ vacuum that didn’t work, and actually broke and fell apart on us). This vacuum has real sucking power, too – we did a comparison test with a shopvac on drywall dust on hard floors, and this vacuum actually sucked up the drywall dust wayyy better than the shopvac! Needless to say, we returned our shopvac and use our vacuum for everything now, from dust to dog hairs, to drywall dust and wood chunks. Love it!

We’ve got a mid-size that does a pretty good job, but the real worker (and new addition to our family) is our ROOMBA!! Its not perfect – I still have to break out the vacuum once a month for edge details, but other than that… it rocks! I set the days and times and it just takes off, cleans, and goes home. My forgetful self thinks this is just the bees knees!

We have the Bissell Pet Hair vac and it worked great in the beginning, but we’re looking for a new one to replace it. Thanks for the recommendation!
One question that has nothing to do with vacs: can you recommend a good source for tablecloths? Preferably the not-too-expensive, but oh-so-fabulous kind?
thanks!

My husband and I just moved into a new house and we FINALLY got a new vacuum, and that is the one we got. We got it on sale at Kmart for about 80 bucks. When we used it the first time we were excited about how much of our brand new carpet fuzz it would suck up. We had to unload it quite a few times actually because it sucked so much up. We’ve really enjoyed it and I hope you guys enjoy it too.
PS–> So when I read your posts sometimes I find myself thinking “man, how come when I go to Homegoods, or Target I never see the cool things you find?” Well this weekend my hubby and I went to homegoods and I freaked out because I found that round mirror you put in your baby room! The difference was that the one I found was already green –not black. We are going to paint it a new color though, possibly a bright orange or yellow :) My hubby thinks I only bought it because “you saw that on Young House Love” haha, he’s right :) But it is very cute!

My hubby and I have had our Dyson Animal vacuum for about 3.5 years and it still works like the day we bought it. We got a great deal on it at Bed, Bath and Beyond. It was the floor model (they didn’t have any left in stock) and we also had a coupon for an extra 20% off. It saved a lot of money! Totally worth the price. We have 2 cats that shed like crazy. Vacuuming with the Dyson Animal makes my heart smile and seems to actually make our house SMELL better too! I’d love to have the Animal hand-held but can’t seem to justify spending almost $200 for it! I think that when our Black and Decker finally dies (it’s been on it’s last leg for over a year), we’re going to check out the Kurv since it comes highly recommneded by you guys! And, great price too!

We got this vacuum around Christmas because we have a baby on the way and our old vacuum burned up. I love this vacuum so much!!! The amount of dirt it has pulled up out of our carpet is amazing and it’s awesome at picking up little dachshund hairs too :) In fact, we’ve even let our neighbors borrow it to see what it would get out of their carpet and they went out and bought one after seeing all the grime their old vacuum was leaving behind!!! I’m so glad we got this before the baby comes.

Wow, so many posts and no one has a miele. I have a miele orion canister vacuum and love it! It’s lightweight, quiet and great for my allergies. It’s expensive, but I got the floor model. We also have a roomba. We just replaced a roomba red that died after five years of hard service with a roomba discovery. Roomba vacuums three times a week, and I vacuum once a week :)

whoops! I should read more carefully. Two other miele owners in this thread :)

We have the Kurv and love it but our apartment gets Dusty so quickly. Do you find that your home is easier to clean with the air filter you bought?
YoungHouseLove says
We actually haven’t seen a major difference with the air filter that we have in our den running most evenings. I still definitely have dust bunnies in every corner so a quick pass with the Kurv one or two times a week is still necessary to cut down on the dust. Hope it helps!

I’ve had a Bissell for the past 5 years (looks a lot like yours, but it was $46 at Walmart) and it’s been great. I have allergies and 2 dogs but it handles all the dust and hair well. I even gave one to a friend as a housewarming gift because she’d borrowed mine before and raved about it.

I’m actually in the market for a new vacuum since my 4.5 year old Eureka Optima has been overheating and shutting down a lot recently (only after vacuuming a small room; up until now it was a great vacuum!). I also have the Kurv, which is awesome at cleaning up the kitty litter that gets tracked all over the bathroom (having a clean bathroom floor is well worth the $30!).
I have a questions about the Bissell. Is the HEPA filter one that you can clean, or do you have to buy a new one? Any idea of how long they last between needing to buy new ones? The filters can get kind of expensive if you need to replace them often.
YoungHouseLove says
Hmm, good question. Perhaps you can visit the Bissell website to find out? We don’t have our booklet on hand to check that out for you but I bet you can download one on their website and see all those details. Hope it helps!

We used up all of our wedding present money and gift cards to help purchase a Dyson Animal vacuum a couple years ago, even though we weren’t for sure that we would get a dog (and may not for another few years!). We figured that we might as well “in case”. Turns out that it was a fantastic idea, because when we moved apartments a year later, the previous tenants had two cats and did not clean well at ALL before leaving–there was cat hair hiding everywhere, and I even found some cat litter spilled into a crevace in the hardwood floor (and my poor husband is allergic to cats!) Makes me wonder if these people had even owned a vacuum–I can’t imagine life without it, especially with pets!
Kathy says
As you researched, did you find that bagless vacuums better now–or does it depend on the brand?
Our last vacuum was a bagless style Hoover (which cost us about $160 eight yrs ago) but it was SO awful to have to clean the filter and canister. Even though I cleaned it outdoors over the dumpster, dust and debris flew everywhere! And new filters for it were about $35 each.
Now I have a new vacuum with airtight throwaway bags, which is much cleaner and I love it.
YoungHouseLove says
We actually didn’t find anything definitively stating that any bag or bagless versions were superior to the other. It really seems like a personal preference and it probably depends on the brand as well. Hope it helps!

I am a total failure in the vacuum department – couldn’t tell you what kind we have if my life depended on it. (It’s…um…red?) Our Kurv died after a few uses and now won’t recharge anymore. I’d love to have a Roomba but refuse to pay $300 for what will end up being a ferret dunebuggy. Mostly my answer to vacuuming is to take off my glasses – if you can’t see the dustbunnies, they’re not there.
Amanda Park says
Just this weekend I told my husband, when I get some money I’m getting a new vacuum. We have two dogs so I vacuum alot of dog hair. So everytime I turn it on it smells like MUTT – YUCK. I want one that I can dump it each time I vacuum. This one seems perfect. I’d love to splurge on a dyson though.

Another proud Dyson owner here. Got my first on Black Friday 2008 at Target when it was on sale and came with a $100 Target gift card! Couldn’t beat that it’s PINK too! ;-)
Recently went by Target and saw they had Dyson DC17 Animal (the purple/silver one) vacuums on clearance half off on one of their endcaps. Reg. $549 down to $275! Can’t beat that since Dysons rarely go on sale for any significant markdowns! Maybe someone looking will still be able to find one at their local Target!
The Virginia House says
I actually have 2 Dysons. The upright….not the best in the world, but I have the little hand held one that I love! I use it all the time to vacuum up after the cracker trails that my little “Hansel & Hansel” make. (no Gretels yet) Highly recommend it.
Dorothy says
Wow! That seems awesome… I’ve been envying the Kurve and now THIS for, oh, MONTHS now, considering I clean my house with a broom, a swiffer, and a couple rags… I should purchase some sort of appliance but it just keeps slipping my mind until the next time I’m sweeping up a huge pile of hair and dust!
Hilary says
We must be vacuum killers. I think this has to do with a combination of factors, including a black labrador retriever, two cats, and a very old house.
I prefer canister vacuums for my old hardwood floors, rather than uprights. With the wheels, I find upright vacuums scratch and damage our floor. We recently killed our Panasonic, after only 2 years of service. We got a refurbished Dyson DC21 canister vacuum from Amazon and it is absolutely wonderful. I am continually amazed by the amount of stuff it picks up.
Jenny says

I’m a green as I can be and somewhat of a clean freak who has spent a good bit of time over the last few years trying to both simplify and green-ify my cleaning routine. I’ve been through a lot of vacuums over the years looking for the perfect one and my current, best ever vac is my Miele canister vacuum. Plan to spend $500+, but to this day (and about 5 years since purchasing it), it is some of the best money I’ve EVER spent. Our house is 95% hard wood with lots of large wool rugs and it has attachments for everything — even our 1930’s radiators. The rug attachment is great and both it and the hard wood floor brush are super sucky — in the good way. Hepa filters are also available. And my last bit of praise, but I think a big plus, is that it is the quietest vacuum I’ve ever used.
Not to burst a bagless bubble, but I found bagless models to be very difficult to throughly clean out and I felt that I breathed in more dust and left dust on things just trying to empty them. The bulk of the dirt comes out, but it will cling to everything not made of slick plastic, like the filter, with all it’s might. My kurv is my one current bagless exception, but that feature even bothers me a bit in the Kurv, but I find it worth while since it’s for little jobs.
That’s my two cents, but cheers to anyone who has a vacuum they love! :)
Diana says
We have a KONE that is amazing after sweeping the kitchen etc… it really does pick up everything (though I mostly use the swiffer on the hardwoods). We also use the Shark vacuum for our carpets. It was inexpensive (plus 20% off at Bed Bath and Beyone with the coupon) and has a lot of suction, it’s bagless, and lightweight. It works just right for us, and I’m glad you found one that works for you!
Patti says
Thanks for this recommendation. I’ve recently started vacuum shopping as our 25+ year old electrolux canister is just too heavy and awkward to take up and down stairs, etc. and I really don’t want to spend $4-500 on a Dyson. I’m definitely going to check out the Bissel. Oh and just an aside if I may share a tiny lil annoyance to fellow commenters … no need to correct spelling or grammatical mistakes in the posts, no one cares.
Michelle Kersey says
I have 2 vacuums. One is a Bissel (from over 5 years ago) the other is a Dirt Devil “pet” vacuum. Of the two, the Dirt Devil did a better job at collecting pet hair (two cats and two dogs live harmoniously (most of the time) in my house. I am, however, considering getting another one because the Dirt Devil still isn’t making me as happy and hair free as I thought it would… being one specifically for pets and all.
I might have to invest in a new vacuum before my lil Gummi Bear arrives this summer.
What kind of filters does it have? My 2 have sooo many filters in it, it drives me nuts every time I have to clean them! With 2 dogs and a toddler boy, dirt loves my house, but hates my vacuum filters.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Michelle,
We don’t have the paperwork about the vacuum with us right now and we don’t remember the filter situation off the top of our heads. The best thing to do would probably be to go to Bissell.com and look up some online brochures about their vacuums (they usually let you download all their paperwork to compare details like filters, etc). Hope it helps!

I bought the same Bissell a few weeks ago. I’ve been very pleased with it, too. After running through more expensive models over the past few years, I decided to get a less-expensive one (thinking the pain won’t be so great when it dies). It is so much easier to manuever than our older ‘self-propelled’ one, and I love the long hose and tools. So far it’s done a great job – happy happy!

Love my Bissell Vacuum cleaner. (I am sure I would love a Dyson as well but prefer to save the extra $500 a Dyson would cost). I have a cat and a dog and the Bissell works great.

I love my Bissell too! When I got such a cheap one that worked so great I was ecstatic. I wanted to tell everyone I knew about my new vacuum – but I didn’t :)
Allie says
Hey guys!
I have the same vacuum and really like it too. It actually replaced another similar Bissel that we liked too. I just can’t CAN’T stomach spending the hefty prices that some other vacuums cost…though I also drooled over the Dysons!
You may already know this since your super smart when it comes to keeping your house all fresh and clean, but just be sure to empty the dirt compartment outside or in a garage if possible. Dumping it in your kitchen trash can can send a lot of that dirt and dust right back into your house.
My dog is a little bigger (probably about 65 lbs bigger!) and has longer hair than burger, and I usually have to clean out the canister after every use (I may have more carpet than you guys).
Overall I’m just as happy with the Bissel and was even happier about the price. At that price, I figure if I get 5 years out of it, I’m happy.
Good luck!
YoungHouseLove says
Great tip Allie! We always try to either empty ours on the front porch or on the back patio so we don’t get that big cloud of dust in the middle of the house- especially during allergy season!

I have a Dyson Animal and I love it! Got it used off craigslist for only $150 which felt like a real steal. I will say though, I feel like about 50% of the fact that it works so well is b/c I have fun actually using all the attachments, etc. With my old one no such fun, so I definitely didn’t spend as much time trying it on different surfaces, etc.
