We already talked about how much we love the Kurv (we’re not paid by them or otherwise perk’d in any way, we just truly love it) and now we’re even more excited because the day has finally come that we’ve discovered a full sized vacuum cleaner that we love just as much! Really, it sucks like a champ. And when we pair the carpet-friendly nature and the sheer power of our new addition with the super portable and wood-floor-friendly Kurv, the dust bunnies and tiny puppy hairs on our floors don’t stand a chance. Seriously, our house has never looked (or felt, because that’s important too) so clean.
We realized we needed to replace our sad excuse for a full sized vacuum known as the Dirt Devil Vibe Quick Vac (more like a leaf-blower as it actually blew out more dust than it sucked in) before the baby came, especially because it tried to kill me whenever I cleaned up during allergy season (seriously, I’m not kidding when I say that it blew things up and out into the air). It was really our fault when we decided it was a good idea to invest all of forty dollars on a vacuum cleaner. I mean what did we expect? So this time around we did some research and actually went into vacuuming shopping with a list of things we wanted:
- A HEPA filter (which helps keep allergies and other airborne pollutants at bay)
- A bagless variety (also great for allergies and simpler to operate for un-bag-coordinated people like me)
- A reasonably light-weight model (anything over 20 lbs, no matter how much power it has, is a bit much for a 5’2″ gal)
- Significantly more power than our previous model (which only boasted 8 amps)
- More settings for different jobs so it can effectively clean multiple surfaces (some area rugs in the house need extra suction while the hardwood floors need something geared for that purpose).
Your list might not be the same as ours at all (different strokes for different folks) but we highly recommend the idea of walking into any big household purchased like this with an idea of what you want from the get-go. It really helps to keep things from getting overwhelming since you can immediately whittle down all the options since they can’t all possibly meet your previously established criteria. It’s a nice little filtering method that allows you to hone in on a few models that seem to fit the bill and then you can do additional research or ask any questions about those few contenders to make the final decision.
Ladies and gentlemen, here’s what we ended up whittling down as our winner, the Bissell 82H1 Cleanview Helix Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner:
And since that name is such a mouthful, let’s just call him the newest member of our family. This guy has 12 amps of power and multiple settings (five to be exact, so you can add extra carpet suction or turn it to a more hardwood floor friendly setting). He also comes equipped with something called a Helix Dirt Separation System for deeper and more powerful cleaning. Of course he’s bagless (and has an easy-empty dirt cup) and has a HEPA filter as well. Plus he even has extra perks (like adjustable height settings and also comes with a slew of extra fittings like a TurboBrush, crevice tool, extension wand, and upholstery/dusting brush). Plus he’s just 15 lbs so he falls under my 20-or-less rule. And after reading many many customer reviews on a number of sites (thanks to our iPhone we could do that right in the store on the spot) we were confident that it was a great choice (it had over 40 five-star ratings on Amazon).
Perhaps the best news of all was the price. Our new friend happened to be on sale at Target (down from $80 to $69 just for the weekend) so although we walked into the store intending to spend around $200 for something that would last, all the high-ratings and the fact that it met and exceeded all of our previously set requirements had us feeling like we’d struck gold.
But back to my story. When I got home I broke it out on our grubbiest carpet (the yellow one in the living room was full of grime from lots of indoor-outdoor snowy-and leafy-foot traffic traffic as of late) and it seriously lifted every last bit of dust and dirt (John watched as the carpet literally got yellower and less brown before our very eyes). It looked brandy new again. Oh happy day. And it worked just as well on the hardwood floors (I got giddy when I got to change the setting from carpeting to hardwood- it felt so custom and fancy). I even took the upholstery brush for a spin on our sofa (it picked up every last hair, fleck of dust, etc).
Who knew cleaning could be fun? I was perma-smiling like a stepford wife with my new vacuum cleaner by my side. So that’s the story of our latest housecleaning weapon that I’m relieved downright psyched to have on hand before the bean arrives in May. After all, one of my resolutions this year is to simplify things and keep our house running more efficiently and easily. And this guy will definitely make cleaning stuff up much simpler than our former leaf-blower ever did. And I bet I won’t go to sleep with a runny nose every time I vacuum during allergy season anymore. Somebody stop me before I lift this machine up in the air and start singing “for he’s a jolly good fellow.”
Oh and just to be totally clear, Bissell didn’t pay us or otherwise perk us (nor did Target, Amazon or anyone else) to mention this vacuum. It’s actually the one that we researched and paid for ourselves because we thought it was the best thing since sliced bread and we wanted to share our find. So this post isn’t one big ad as much as one big weird love-fest for a new vacuum from an extremely appreciative homeowner. But let’s talk about your lean mean cleaning machines. Any other Bissell lovers out there? Any fancy Dyson peeps (I ogled the white pet-hair model for what felt like hours)? Anyone who doesn’t believe in vacuum cleaners and peacefully coexists with dustbunnies? Let’s talk about what sucks at your house.
Psst- Wanna know more about how we clean our entire house? Click here. And for the original suckie vacuum post about our beloved Kurv, click here.

I have an almost identical Bissell (except we paid twice as much because it was branded for pet hair, oops!). My husband was convinced we needed a new vacuum and proved his point by re-vacuuming my freshly cleaned basement with his new toy. I hate to admit this…The new Bissell picked up almost a canister full of pug hair!
I’m certain you will love your new member of the family!
PS. I love my Dirt Devil Kone too!

My Dyson Animal is the best machine I’ve ever owned. It’s absolutely scary to see how much filth is hiding in the rugs that “look clean”.
Amber Shah says
Congrats on your new purchase. We made the mistake of shelling out some serious cash (I think maybe $300 or $400… not sure) on an Dyson Animal. We have three dogs and umpteen cats so we felt like it was a must to get a super powered vacuum. It actually does suck well on regular old carpet, pulling out lots of hair that a lesser vacuum might miss. However, using it on hardwood or tile is a bit like applying a plane jet to a pea and it ends up being way overkill, most likely blowing the same amount away that it sucks in.
Worst of all, is that our main family room has a rug on hardwood. For whatever reason, the Dyson CANNOT vacuum this rug properly. As soon as we start to vacuum (with brush turned on), the brush auto-shuts off. Then if you vacuum without the brush, it doesn’t do ANYTHING. If you force the brush on by holding down the button, it will start to suck, but it still takes several several times over the same spot to get it to pick up the hair that’s sitting right on top there. And it is very awkward to be holding down the button, halfway down the vacuum the entire time you’re vacuuming.
Suffice it to say, I don’t like my vacuum! I miss my cheap Bissel from college. We realy need to just give up and buy a new, cheaper Bissell like the one you guys have, except we feel so bad for sinking so much cash into the Dyson! Anyways, good job on making the right choice!

I love the Kurv too!!! It’s great for kitty hair on hardwood floor!

My parents gave me and the mister a Dyson for our combined birthdays/Christmas last year, and I LOVE it. With 3 cats and a ton of carpets, the amount of dust and fur that accumulates (and that the Dyson sucks out) is totally revolting.
Sherry, if you bought your vacuum on Saturday, I think you qualify for a $10 rebate from Bissell. Right now they have rebate offers on purchases made from 2/20-3/31:

Thought that might help your readers who want to act on your glowing recommendation!

So, I looked through the posts to make sure I wasn’t repeating anyone–here’s my question:
Do you have any tips for cleaning out the brush heads on vacuums?
This is gross, but there are 2 long-haired ladies in our house and the hair always gets so wrapped up in there that I can’t clean it very well. I’m sure it’s effecting the performance of the machine. Ideas, anyone?
thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Meagn,
We’ve actually heard that using an unbent paper clip to pull out all those gross hair wads can work (when the vacuum is off of course). Anyone else have other ideas?

I have a vintage Kirby, and I love love love it. I also have a little orange canister vac for hard floors and up-high-cobwebs and small messes. But I love the Kirby. It’s heavy, yes. But when you turn it on, it sounds like things are actually GETTING CLEAN, (Gasp . . . ) and I love the heft of it. Yes, it’s heavy, but I know it’s not going to fall apart anytime soon.
And $30 on Craigslist was too good to pass up. :o)

I saw someone else mention it, and wanted to echo my love for the Bissell Pet Hair vac! It’s great, easy to empty, and does a great job on my cat’s hair.
Amanda says
I loved our Bissell Pet Hair Vac, but I have to say that the Bissell Customer service was awful. It ended up I had to get a refurbished model that was half the price (in order to have any vacuum… they wanted me to pay the shipping to and from, which I might as well just go buy a new one!) Anyhow, now that I have a cheaper model I would have to say that you made a wise decision. Even refurbished it still tackles everything I ask it to and more. I use the Turbo brush for curtains and pillows that get dog hair on them. All in all, you made a good purchase!
JC says
I have this exact same model and I love it!! I don’t even mind the vacuuming chore anymore. There is something so satisfying about seeing how much crud you are getting rid of. PS Don’t neglect cleaning all the filters on ocassion. It’s very easy to do and perks the action right back up.

I can’t not rave enough about my vacuum. I LOVE it…LOOOOVE it.

I would have taken you two for a shoes off at the door type house. No? (Did someone already ask about this?)
That said, I love your new vacuum. And that This Vacuum Sucks gets me every time someone says it.

I have this vac as well. I loved it at first but beware that the belt snaps/breaks very easily. We average about 2 belts a month. If anything at all accidentally gets sucked into the roller the belt will snap. It snapped again a few days ago when I was doing the edge of an area rug. I tried to exchange it at Walmart but I lost my slip and they wouldn’t take it back. It’s only a few months old. :(
Emily Ann says
We actually have this exact same vacuum cleaner and we really love it! My husband is probably the only person that I know that researches big purchases even more than you guys so I think it has to be a real winner :)

I’m a big fan of our Dyson. I actually didn’t want to buy it though — my husband did! And since he’s the allergy sufferer in our family, I agreed. Wow, it was love! I really do enjoy using that thing, even after two years of owning it.
renee says
I have a Bissell Lift-Off and adore it. The original model shorted out and when I contacted customer service, they sent me an almost-new refurbished one. And it kicks booty! My original was four years old and I didn’t even have to show a receipt. I love Bissell’s customer service!
Lissa says
I have a Dyson that I bought at target ONLY because:
1. I had giftcards
2. It was on sale
3. I got a $100 giftcard for buying it
I must say that I LOVE it! It pulled so much crap out of my carpet that it was scary.
On another note, I recently got the Shark Steam Mop. So far it’s pretty cool and proves that I am in fact crap at mopping since the first time I used it the pads were almost instantly brown, It has made the tile I inherited with my 100 year old house look so much better. I also like the fact that it doesn’t require cleaners at all, I just add water.
katy says
We have a Bissel Pet Hair Eraser and it’s almost TOO powerful. My daughter has a PBK rug in her room and we have a PB rug in our family room. Every time we vacuum those rugs, the vacuum is so strong, it pulls up the little loops in the rug and has really made my daughter’s rug look bad. It’s so bad, I rarely vacuum her rug anymore!
Any suggestions for this problem??
Laura says
Ok, you know you know way too much about vacuums when you can identify the brand and model from just seeing a peek of the handle before scrolling down… I work in a housewares store, and the Bissells vacs are some of the best-selling models we carry.
@Tracie, looking for the carpet cleaner: the Hoover All Terrain or the Agility work well, and generally stand up better than the Bissell models. (We do repairs at the store as well, so I have some experience with what usually breaks down…) Most of the Hoover SteamVacs are fairly similar, and the 2 tank system is less messy than the Bissell system.
@Kate, wondering about the filters: most Bissell filters are washable. For this particular unit, the main HEPA filter and the foam filter around it are both washable, as is the pre-motor filter. The HEPA exhaust filter has to be replaced, but only about every 18-24 months. (The other filters need to be replaced as they wear out.) I know that our store (in Canada) sells the exhaust HEPA for about $15 CAD, but I think in the US, they are about $10 USD- a lot cheaper than most other vacuums with HEPA systems!
Sherry, I hope you don’t run into any trouble during allergy season- the only thing I don’t like about the Bissell Lift-Off vacuum that I own is that it’s bagless, and during allergy season, I vacuum up all the dust and pollen and other various sneeze-inducing things, and then I have to dump the canister! I’ve taken to wearing a dust mask on those really bad allergy days!
YoungHouseLove says
Laura- Thanks so much for your expertise! The mask idea for emptying the cannister during allergy season is priceless! I’ll definitely be taking your suggestion.
Katy- Eeks! We wish we had some advice for you, but other than asking if there’s a lighter setting you could put your vacuum on we’re inclined to suggest getting a different model that won’t ruin your rug. Maybe you can sell yours on Craigslist to get some money to put towards a new one (and help yours find a better home without a rug that’s so incompatible). Hope it helps!
Jbhat- Good question! We definitely do our best to take our shoes off at the back door (where we usually enter and exit) but occasionally we step out on the porch to get a package or even let someone in (like our heating guy or a neighbor stopping in to say hello) so the shoes off habit is somehow harder to enforce at the front door. We also try not to be too obsessive so we do our best to go with the flow and we’re happy to have found a vacuum that makes up for our shoes-off shortcomings!

My boyfriend and I bought a Shark Pet Hair canister vaccuum last summer for $250 (canadian) since it was on sale at the time (originally $300 I believe). We have hardwood, vinyl and carpet in out apartment so lots of floors to work with. It has a power head and all different kinds of attatchments for hard floors, pet hair removers, bristled brushes etc. It is AMAZING! I’m grossed out everytime I use the vaccuum. The suction is unbelievable. I really wanted a Dyson, but my BF and I were right out of college/university and didn’t want to spend $600 on a vaccuum. I HIGHLY reccomend this vaccuum. The only complaint I have is that it’s a bit heavy. It’s only an issue when I’m taking it out and putting it away but it rolls well while in use!
Grace says
We got the Dyson DC24 Ball. Light weight was a big must for me being 5’0 even! A HEPA filter was a must as well. I have terrible allergies. We love it! It’s our first vacuum ever, so I don’t know how it compares to others. We’ve had it for a year and my only complaint is I have to empty out the canister frequently. We got ours on sale because a newer version was available and an extra 20% off because it was on our wedding registry. It doesn’t quite have the power yours does or as many settings, which I do envy. But at the time we didn’t know what to look for in a vacuum and our only requirements were the above 2.
Dana @ House*Tweaking says
How did you know I was in the market for a new vacuum?! We currently have a vacuum that works great (a bagless HEPA Kenmore model) but it is so old that the replacement filters are no longer available. I scrape the filter clean with a screwdriver but you know that’s not really ‘cleaning’. I’ve been holding out for the thing to blow up but it just keeps going, going, going. I may just check out your Bissel…the price is right.

Simplicity Vacuums!! Made is USA!
We asked for a new vacuum for Christmas from my mother in law and she only buys high quality items that last a lifetime. She bought us a Simplicity Vacuum, only sold in vacuum shops. It’s not super expensive. But, after having HORRIBLE vacuums all my life, I was definitely willing to spend big bucks on a vacuum. She got us the basic model, that really only comes with one attachment, it was $250. So, some of the other models would be quite pricey. But, man this thing works GREAT!!!
Rose says
okay this VAC looks like my new bagless upright Hoover which is sitting gathering dust……
I never had an upright before and found that in a small house it was hard to get in and out of tight spots like a normal vacuum head. Any tips for me I paid $250 for it and have been using my little bag guzzler still….

Too funny- I have a very similar Bissell model and I sort of hate it! Guess it just shows that everyone has a different preference, because I can’t wait to go back to a bag version and keep all my allergens and dust tightly sealed up. Plus, I absolutely detest having to wash those danged filters. It is probably way un-green of me, but give me a disposable filter anyday after trying to keep those things clean. I know others who love this machine (my bff) but I guess I’m the odd one out :)

Good tip! We’re planning on a new cuum before the kids show up (adopting). We have very little carpet, and recently painted some hardwood. We found the “As Seen on TV” SWIVEL SWEEPER to be ALL its cracked up to be…for quick “sweeps”. Gets in all corners, under beds, steps, flatish rugs, and doesn’t scuff flat floor paint! At Target (my hometown company!) for about $40.
Emma N says
just make sure that when you empty the compartment where all the dust and dirt goes, that you do it outside! Otherwise all that dust and dirt just floats right back into your house. At least that’s what Dr. Oz says about bagless vacuums.
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks Emma! We definitely empty it out on the porch or on the back patio so we don’t get all that dust in the air- especially during allergy season!

As I read the comments on this entry, I realized that I’ve had quite a few vacuums. I never really thought about it before.
I bought both a Roomba and a Scooba a few years back (I used to work with a guy at iRobot and was fascinated by their foray into consumer products). They were great novelties for about a year. They both died around the same time. I always had to do regular vacuuming “behind” the Roomba.
I now have the Dyson Animal Ball (I can’t remember the actual model number). It’s a very good vacuum, but I don’t feel it’s dramatically superior to other major brands. I hope it lasts for many years in light of how much it cost! My next vac will be a Hoover or Bissel…and will probably be a good $200 less than I paid for my Dyson.
Katie says
My husband and I registered for the Dyson DC17 Animal when we got married a few years ago–kind of as a joke, he got a little carried away with the gun. Much to our surprise (and delight), someone actually bought it for us, so we immediately gave away our former vacuums and fell in love with our Dyson. It’s not something I personally would’ve spent the money on, but I can’t imagine life without it now. It makes me want to clean.
Melissa says
We owned this vacuum at one time. I must say that it vacuumed quite well but when we moved into our new house and the only carpet we had was upstairs it got stuck in the garage and left there. It might still be there but I want to say that DH took it off when he cleaned the garage out. I didn’t have anywhere to store it upstairs otherwise I might have just kept it but we went with a much lighter simple vacuum. We didn’t need anything serious anymore as our once house dogs became outdoor dogs after moving here.
Chelsie says
Very funny…after reading your list of vacuum requirements, I was very curious to find out what the winner was going to be. Boy was I shocked when I saw that it was the exact one we have sitting in our closet! Ours was a gift from our wedding registry, and we love it–also a real bargain! Glad to know I have a good vacuum. :oD
Amanda L says
I also hate my vacuum that has a bag. It doesn’t work well and I feel like the thing doesn’t pick up anything. My MIL got me a Shark for Christmas and I am in LOVE. It is super light weight and also goes from hardwood/vinyl to carpet with ease. It empties so easy and I feel like it sucks the life out of dirt and grime in our carpets. The only down side is that I have to pry hair out of the brushes a lot. That might just be cause I shed…a lot…downside of being a blonde.
Kate says
I actually just went out and bought this vacuum! Our old one has started getting overheated and shutting down after less and less time. After it only got through half a room last night, I decided to give in and get a new one (it was only about $65 5 years ago, so I really can’t complain). The Bissell seems great so far, I was really impressed by how much cat hair it got off the carpet!
Dannielle says
My vacuum died on me last night mid clean and I went to the nearest Target. THANK YOU for recommending this vacuum. I can not even say ENOUGH good things about it after using it just the one day. I have NEVER seen my carpet or floors look that good. I had TWO seperate vacuums (one to clean the tile and one to clean the rugs) and now this vacuum does both and both of those vacuums are in the trash (they served a good purpose for two years!) But thank you so much!

We are the proud owners of the dyson animal. IT IS FANTASTIC, self propelled, it feels so lightweight and the attachments are so easy to use and versitle…I even vacumn the couch weekly which I never did with any other one! Which vacuum would you say is best for hard woods? I just got my first house and it is a 1940 house in the heart of downtown that has just been remodeled with all new hard woods. It is small, only 900 square feet, and I have no pets. Any ideas???

We have hardwoods throughout our house and we love both of the vacuums in this post for different reasons. If you’re looking for something to quickly grab dust bunnies around the perimeter of the room or under the table, the Kurv is best for you. I just recently started following your blog per a friend’s recommendation. I love it! My husband and I (and our little dog too) are saving up for our first house and I am so inspired by the way you do things and know I will constantly be coming back to your website as a resource. Plus, I like the humor sprinkled in.
But the main thing I wanted to say is that our dinosaur hand-me-down vacuum finally stopped working (or started “sucking” I guess) and I was just beginning my research. I saw the same Bissell at Target for $75, and thought it couldn’t be any good for that low of a price. A few days later, I was checking out your older posts and saw this one. After checking the reviews I was convinced. We went out and bought one and I’m giddy over it. It’s so light and effective! Thank you for sharing your experience!

I bought my bissel off Amazon and it finally arrived today! How could I not after all the wonderful things everyone is saying about it….however I am a bit disappointed…
It really doesn’t seem that great. I was vacuuming cat litter on the bathroom floor and it was blowing a bit of it around, making what i had just gone over dirty again. It’s also really loud, which i kinda fixed by adjusting the height (I have only tile and laminate floor in my apt). It is AMAZING on upholstery however. I was being bombarded with cat hair from my two long haired kitties and I do think that that is worth the the 90$ Canadian I spent on it just for how clean my sofa and chair are now. However, i’m not totally convinced of its capabilities otherwise (with the blowing litter around a bit..). Has anyone else had this problem on non carpeted floors?
Thanks!
Julia

My Wife and I are suddenly in the market for a vacuum for our apartment, and our house (currently under construction). We follow your blog semi regularly, and she pointed out this post. After further review at other websites, I have found more mixed reviews, and was wondering; now that you have had this one for nearly five months if you still love it as much as you did in the first couple of weeks. Obviously with us building we want to try to maintain everything as well as possible, and having a good sucking vacuum will help us with that immensely…
Thanks!

It’s a standard vacuum. I like the filters and believe they do their job. The sole issue is that the hose on the back falls down a lot. That’s annoying however not value sending it back. It’s loud but if the air/heat is running the baby does not wake up. I am sorry for this – It Extremely Sucks! Proud of this purchase. I don’t have several hundred greenbacks to pay on a Dyson therefore it works great for me!

We went out and bought this vacuum last year after reading your post. We have loved it! But now it’s not sucking so much…is there some sort of filter maintenance you do to keep it’s suck? It now spits a bunch of dust every where like you said your old one did! Thanks in advance!
