Ok, we’ll let you in on a small semi-gross secret. Our master bedroom mattress was way way old. Hugh Hefner old. And it was a hand-me-down. In fact, John’s sister graciously donated it to us when we moved to Richmond three years ago (after decades of use with it herself). They say mattresses get stiffer with age and we can definitely vouch for that fact. Ours was as tough as a brick and about as comfortable as one too. But it certainly did the job over the past three years and we weren’t in any place to purchase a new one off the bat as we embarked on our extreme home makeover one room at a time. Paint, primer, other furnishings and accessories- even a kitchen remodel- came first. And every night we retreated to bed sore and tired and woke up more achy than the night before. Here are John and Burger demonstrating how not fun our old mattress was. Look at those sad faces.
But three glorious years later, the time finally came for us to bid a sweet we-won’t-miss-you-at-all farewell to our ancient mattress and welcome a new sleeping companion into our lives. Now we won’t go to bed with just anything these days, my obsession with all things eco made me yearn for a pure and organic mattress free of fireproofing chemicals and made from 100% natural materials that are just as good for the planet as they are for people.
After hours of googling I found a great little organic mattress comparison site, which led me straight to the arms of our new bedroom companion: the Organic Serenity Natural Dunlop Latex Mattress By Savvy Rest. It was the top ranked mattress and it was actually the most affordable one as well (other than the much lower rated and thinner one at the bottom of the page).
At $1999 for a queen mattress, it’s hardly a drop in the bucket. In fact it’s pricier than every piece of furniture in the entire house. But when you think about how much time you spend on a mattress, and how this baby is warrantied for a full 20 years, it really breaks down to pennies a day and the added fact that it’s so good for the planet and our bodies really was a selling point for us- even if it upped the price a bit. So after a few months of saving (we literally had a “mattress fund” in our savings account) our new bedmate arrived in three different boxes. And yes I did that squealing and clapping thing that I do when I’m excited.
Possibly one of the most amazing features of the Organic Serenity Mattress is that you get to customize the firmness. It’s made up of three three-inch layers of natural latex encased in a certified organic cotton & wool cover so each layer came in its own box (another added bonus is that it shipped from nearby Chrlottesvile, Virginia so it didn’t have to travel many miles to our door- hooray for buying “local”). Here’s one of the layers along with the organic cotton and wool cover:
The fun began about a week earlier when we got to personally select each layer’s density online during the ordering process (choosing between soft, medium, or firm) so we could create the perfect customized mattress just for us. You can even split each layer up the middle so if John liked a soft mattress and I liked a hard one, we could have chosen different latex densities on either side of the mattress for an individualized result. Since we both like a moderately firm mattress (not brick-firm like our former one, just not too soft since we’re back and belly sleepers) we chatted with one of the phone consultants and ended up going with one layer of “medium” followed by a second layer of “medium” and a layer of “soft.” And needless to say when those three layers arrived in their own boxes we couldn’t wait to put everything together. You know we like DIY projects around here! First we cleared out our old mattress (which we Freecycled by the way):
Then we followed the so-simple-Burger-could-do-it directions that came in one of the boxes. First we laid out the bottom part of the organic cotton & wool cover:
Then we took out the layer of natural latex marked “bottom, medium” and stuck it into the cover, wiggling it around like we were shaking out a rug until it was centered and even across the bottom of the cover. Even with just one 3″ layer of hole-riddled latex our bed was eons more comfortable than our old inner spring antique.
Then we placed the “middle, medium” layer of latex on top of the “bottom, medium” one and followed that with the “top, soft” layer, which you can see John adjusting below:
Once each layer was stacked evenly and aligned in the cover, it was time to bring in the top of the cover and zip it around all three pieces of latex to hold them in place for the long haul (20+ years according to the warranty).
John worked his way around the whole mattress, zipping as he went, and before we knew it we had a fully functioning new mattress to call home. And since each layer is 3″ thick plus there’s the quilted organic wool & cotton cover, our new mattress is a decadent 11″ thick (as opposed to our crochety old 6″ inner spring variety). Words can’t express how much we love our 2 year anniversary present to each other (cotton’s supposed to be the 2-year anniversary theme, and by golly the cover is actually pure organic cotton!). Look how good life is when you have a new mattress. You start posing like they do in those commercials with the wine glass on the bed:
So that’s the story of aching backs, researching, ordering, and assembling which resulted in sleeping like babies ever since (no more pinned featherbed required). Our actual anniversary isn’t until July 7th but we sure are glad we saved our pennies for something that we’ll appreciate for years (and years) to come. And speaking of the passage of time, look who was still hanging out on our new mattress hours after we assembled it and retreated to the den to watch some tube. Yup, Burger was sold from day one.
How about you guys. Are any of you in need of a new mattress or another household staple like a couch? Any wedding anniversaries coming up with cotton (or something else) on the agenda? Do tell.
Psst- Looking for an update on how we like our mattress? Check out this follow-up post where we detail how we feel about our big mattress switcheroo after a good amount of use.

your new bed sounds (and looks) amazing! i bought a mattress after i got my first job 4 years ago and it has not lived up to expectations. sadly i am not really ready for another mattress purchase, but will keep savvy rest in mind when i am- it sounds like it will be perfect. :)
happy sleeping, and happy anniversary too!

I’m thinking Savvy Rest should have given you a discount for such a great review!!! You should check into that. Being a star blogger should come with those perks. ;)
We are very lucky. My parents got us a bedroom suite for our wedding and they let us pick out a nice new mattress to go with it!
Melody says
Now that you have a new mattress, have you considered a mattress cover for allergies and bed bugs?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Melody,
Thanks to the organic wool mattress cover, bugs hate our new bed (it’s a naturally bug repellant material), so we don’t have to worry about bringing in something plasticy or crunchy. And thanks to the all natural and organic materials, our new mattress is also non allergenic, so we’re convinced it’s the best thing ever. Stay tuned for the update post all about how we like it after about a month of use…

Cool DIY mattress. Can you / do you need to flip it? If so, how do you? Flipping all those foam pads seems pretty monotonous.

Hey Sean,
Good question. No flipping necessary. Wahoo for low maintenance mattresses!

We celebrated our second anniversary on Tuesday, but still haven’t given gifts (we were on a family beach trip and opted to really celebrate when we could be alone this weekend). Last year, we did do paper gifts, but I’m at a loss of what to get for cotton.
My grandmother gave us a grand for our wedding gift, so we purchased a mattress. My husband had a hand me down left by a college roommate and I had one I’d purchased for 99 bucks at Big Lots Furniture, so we were in need. We got a Simmons. We like it, and it’s supposed to last for a long time with no flipping, but I’ll have to see it to believe it.
The style you got kind of reminds me of those at ikea. I like it.
Cara says
Our first anniversary is coming up, and our paper gift to each other is a contract on a new house!! Happy anniversary to you!

Looking forward to the update post. I am definitely in need of a new mattress (mine is well over its expiration date..i’ve had it since my early teens and that mattress has lasted through a couple of bedframes)! If you guys are still happy in a month or so, I think I might have to start my own mattress fund!!

My wife (like many!) found what you did with the wardrobes on the IKEA hacker blog, and we are both getting great ideas for our own much-in-need-of-overhaul bedroom. One question: where is the actual bedframe from? It looks a little IKEA-ish, from the photos on this page, but it’s hard to be sure.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Bernard,
Yup, it’s the malm bed from Ikea! Happy hunting…

We LOVE our natural latex mattress! It’s soooo comfortable and once I learned about the chemicals that are in regular and memory foam mattress, it’s completely worth the money.

Also wanted to add that when we got our latex mattress, we went with all new organic bedding, wool mattress cover, etc. and I found natural latex pillows at overstock for $30.

Love your site! I am very interested in organic mattresses for my kids, but after doing some research, I see that the government requires that mattresses be flame retardant. How do organic mattresses comply with the requirement? I understand wool is naturally flame retardant, but the flame point is still lower than the US requires.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Karen,
We’re not quite sure how it works other than knowing that they’re authorized American vendors with business licenses and nothing but happy customers. I was actually under the impression that the wool cover is flame retardant enough to meet those requirements. Perhaps that’s a question for the company? I’m sure anyone you’re interested in buying from would be happy to explain how it all works for ya. Hope it helps!

RE: I understand wool is naturally flame retardant, but the flame point is still lower than the US requires.
Hi Karen. I’m Laura, from Savvy Rest. You CAN pass the federal burn test using wool only. (And we do). But tha’s only if you use a sufficient quantity. We’re generous with the amount of batting we quilt into the casing, and pass the open-flame burn tests (for mattresses and foundations) with flying colors. If you would like a copy of our test results, please email [email protected].
Best wishes. (And we’re thrilled to find Savvy Rest on this great blog. Thank you, Young House Love!)

Great post and happy anniversary! It’s good to see a couple so excited about their new organic mattress. I’ve been looking into buying one for some time now and have read several fantastic reviews about the Savvy Rest organic mattress. You can customize so many facets of the mattress, there’s no way you and John won’t great a good night’s sleep!
Jerome says
Just bought a custom made 8″ latex mattress from a place locally that has their own no-frills showroom. The mattress was delivered and isn’t meeting our expectations. We expected, like the showroom, for the latex mattress to be very motion dampening. The one delivered to us doesn’t seem to be doing that as effectively. Any recommendations? Is it possible they used lower quality latex? Lower density? We were under the understanding that we’d be getting the same as the showroom – just doesn’t seem to be up to snuff though – and it wasn’t cheap….
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Jerome,
I would march back in there and ask them what’s up! We’ve definitely heard there are different purities, densities, and qualities of latex so it’s important that you get what you paid for! Of course I would also recommend our new mattress since it’s great so if you demand a refund from your local guys there’s always the one we snagged that should help you sleep easy!

I have an Organic Serenity from Savvy Rest in king size, firm-medium-soft. I saved for a long time and it was one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. My bed is one of my favorite things in life, I just love being on it.
I have two coordinating sets of organic jersey sheets from Gaiam that finish it perfectly, and a wool comforter from Shepherd’s Dream in California.
Savvy Rest is a great company. I also live in Richmond and I went to the showroom in Ivy to try out the different firmness combinations. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly.
Having a non-toxic bed has helped me commit to other natural materials in my house. So I have Osmo Polyx natural wax-oil finish on my floors. I also need a padded bench or ottoman to make it easier for my dog to get onto the bed, and I am planning to make my own from wood and latex and natural fabric. I just don’t want to bring any off-gassing into my beautiful bedroom.

Just found your blog, it is great. I have been looking for a natural mattress to purchase for a while now, it is great to find one so well recommended, and I live in VA too (Hampton Roads area)right near you :), that is great to know that the company is in the same state. I will have to buy the foundation/box too along with the mattress since I don’t have a bed frame like you do. I went thru chemo last year, and that is nothing like a “heads up” for trying to be in a more healthy state, and one of thoses ways is to try to be careful of what you are breathing in and bringing into your home. Thanks for all the “green” info!

hi there!
my husband and i have the exact same mattress. i love it, but i think he would prefer a softer mattress. but i’d prefer that he not spend years of his life with his face pressed into a sponge of chemical flame retardants. anyway, i’ve had a hard time finding a definitive answer on this, but have you been told that the slats should be no more than 3″ apart? i’ve been trying to confirm this for a year. I think I’m going to just put a sheet of untreated plywood between the slats (mine are 5″ apart) and the mattress.
YoungHouseLove says
Hmmm, Camella – your search for answers won’t end with us, unfortunately. We hadn’t heard of the 3″ rule – though ours are – but if it’s a weight distribution issue it sounds like your solution will probably work just fine. In fact, my old IKEA bed that I grew up in (and later took to college and my first apartment in NYC) actually came with a piece of plywood-like material that spread across the slats. Unfortunately I don’t recall how far apart the slats were but I’m guessing it was more than 3″!

I just found this lovely, happy site…..and am THRILLED that there are lots of things to read and try.
Question about beds: My family always had the mattress/box spring combo. Do you know anything about the pros/cons of the box spring versus a mattress on slats. Appreciate any feedback
YoungHouseLove says
Good question! I guess one obvious pro to going boxspringless would be cost (our bed was substantially cheaper without one). If you like a higher bed that you climb into you’ll probably want to go the boxspring route. As far as comfort is concerned, we haven’t found anything compromised in that department if you purchase a high quality mattress to use on the wood slats of a platform bed, and the look is clean and low and sleek. Hope it helps!

Hi yall :)
I have a girlfriend who is super obsessed with washing stuff so since this mattress essentially comes apart the question just begs to be asked…can you was the cover??
Anniversary gifts are hard since you want them to be special so I decided to follow the traditional presents. Year one (paper) I framed our marriage certificate in a floating frame with pics from our wedding. Year two (cotton) I found robes almost identical to the ones at our hotel that we wore every day on our honeymoon. Year three (leather) was a little tricky but since my husband works from a laptop that he carries back and forth from the office a nice, expensive leather laptop/messenger bag did the trick! Our fourth anniversary is in May and not sure what I am going to do with Fruit/Flowers but we will see!!
I just discovered your site a few weeks ago but am hooked!! You have such cool ideas…I check at least once a day to see what’s new!!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Anne,
So glad you found our blog. Actually, washing the cover isn’t recommended but you can snag an organic mattress cover to put over the whole shebang (and that can be easily washed). It would actually be a total pain to pull of the zip cover and wash it even if it was recommended since it goes under all three layers!

Love your crib choice!!! I wish I knew about organic crib mattresses when my oldest was born.
I have a question about your mattress though–had you considered the Ikea Sultan Erfjord latex mattress when you were selecting one for yourself? The salesperson at Ikea talked it up last time I was there. It seems natural and is a lot less expensive than other options, but I don’t know much about mattresses.
YoungHouseLove says
Yes, we heavily considered it and it’s a fabulous budget-friendly and non-toxic option. To explain it very generally, that mattress is about an 8 on the eco/green scale and Savvy Rest mattresses are an 11. They just go above and beyond to use 100% organic wool and 100% organic cotton and zero chemicals to keep things firesafe. They even fill their mattresses with 100% naturally grown latex instead of metal springs or batting in the middle. They’re like the kid in your school who ends up with a 4.5 GPA thanks to all the extra credit they did. But the Ikea version is about a thousand times greener and less toxic than the average mattress so they’re a great compromise if that’s what you’re looking for. Goodness knows we understand the concept of having a budget and sticking to it!

Hi youngsters,
A somewhat late and only loosely related question for you. We have a similar style bed in the sense that it’s from IKEA and has slats as opposed to a box spring. We like the functionality of it, but have found our slats appear to be a bit too short and will, from time to time, slip off the perimeter rails. We’ve resorted to putting a cut-down furring strip between the two slat sets, which is better but still doesn’t completely solve the problem for some of the shorter slats. I was wondering if you guys have encountered the same thing or if perhaps we got the slats that slipped by IKEA QA. Worst case, we can always cut longer slats ourselves, but it would be a pain since we’ve already spent the money on purchasing these. And unfortunately, our nearest IKEA is a day trip (and a border crossing) away, so it’s not terribly easy to pop by the store… Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Julie,
Every once in a blue moon we jump into bed or toss something super heavy on one side of the mattress (like furniture when we’re painting another room) and some of the slats slide off, but it’s only three times a year or so. Which isn’t annoying enough to spur us into any type of preventative action. It sounds like yours might be shorter and they might come off more regularly so DIYing something to keep that from happening might be your best bet. Good luck!

I’m considering purchasing the Malm myself. But I’m not sure how my husband would feel about giving up the boxspring (both due to his being traditional, and the amount of moola he spent on it in the first place). So my questions to you are: if you were in the same situation, do you think that the bed would look ok with a box spring on top of the slats? (maybe adding a fitted sheet to cover it’s ugliness? If you have a few spare minutes (hehe), would you mind telling me approximately how many inches you have between the top of your mattress and the top of the headboard? Pretty please? I would guess about 18″? Many thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
Yup, it’s about 18.” We think you could add a box spring under the mattress but your mattress might slide since it won’t be recessed into the bed frame so it won’t be held in place. Does that make sense? I can assure you that it’s super comfy with just a nice mattress (and you can always add a featherbed, which might be more functional than the shifting mattress over the box spring). Hope it helps!
xo,
s
Julie says
Sherry,
Thanks for the quick response — it’s helpful to know if others share our issues or not! I guess it’s back to the work bench for my hubby to cut longer slats… Or just deal with replacing them when we hear that telltale “clunk” on the wood floor.
Melanie, we went from a traditional box spring/ mattress combo to a slat bed and didn’t notice a difference in comfort. I was concerned too, but have no regrets. The only change is that it’s tricky to incorporate a dust ruffle, if your heart so desires.
Yardsnacker says
Thanks for this post! Question, do the three latex layers need readjusting from time to time or does it stay pretty much square?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Yardsnacker,
We’ve had no issue with them shifting or needing to be rotated so far. The zippered cover that keep them all together is pretty snug so it pretty much acts like one mattress unit. Hope that helps!
-John
Natasha says
I know this isn’t an IKEA website, but my husband and I have a similar closet situation (or lack thereof) in one of the bedrooms in our house and I love your solution so we are considering the Malm too. If the slats are an issue to some people and we already have a brand new set of box springs, would it be crazy to think you could just skip the slats and place the box-springs on the floor within the bed?
YoungHouseLove says
Hmmm we’re not sure if the height will be right with the boxspring on the floor. And you’d definitely see it from the side (the modern low lines of the bed looked best when you didn’t see stuff cluttering up the bed underneath. But maybe you could create some sort of modern skirt? Dunno. Maybe try calling ikea to see what they recommend? Good luck!
xo,
s
p.s. Ikea has redesigned most beds and slats so they now lock in for fewer issues!
Kathryn Clark says
I’m writing this way, way after the posting, but I have a question and I’m hoping you could give me a quick answer if it’s not too much trouble! Did you need any kind of special slats for the heavy organic mattress? We’ve just bought one ourselves, (due in part to your great information!) and I’m now buying the bed frame to go with it. Ikea has multiple options for the slats, and I was wondering which you went with. Any advice is appreciated!
YoungHouseLove says
We’ve slept on ours with regular old Ikea slats (I think the entry level ones) in the old house (for about a year) and so far in this house on the slightly higher cost ones with the slight curve (for about 5 months). Both seem to work really well. Hope it helps!

This is clearly a post where everyone wants your advice :) We have a more modern bed frame as well (where a box spring won’t work) and I just wondered if Savvy Rest “okayed” the lack of box spring with their warranty? What a fun site! I found you by searching for success stories on painting old furniture, and my wife and I have “reused” a few of your concepts, like the izze vases (they certainly do make inexpensive flowers look groovy without looking too kitsch), the mobile, and she’s making kissing balls for a nursery after we followed a number of links from your site to some DIY guides on the subject. I thought I’d comment on this old blog entry because we are pretty finicky about sleep surfaces. We retired our queen sized inner spring last year when she got pregnant — needed just a little more space. I found the online foam stores to be a really great source for mattresses! We built a simple platform bed with construction grade lumber, padded and upholstered the edges of the platform, and a headboard to match, and purchased a memory foam mattress from a foam source online for about $500.00. The quality of the foam is substantially better than we expected (much better than an expensive memory foam topper we used on the queen). The best tip we found for sleeping on foam was a wool mattress pad. It really helps moderate the temperature of the sleep surface. I would have liked to go for latex (the foam store we used also sells latex), but we were trying to keep it inexpensive, as well as somewhat soft, since my wife has to sleep on her side these days. Hoping there are recycling options for HD/memory foam, so we won’t feel too guilty about upgrading to latex if when get the itch to upgrade. In the meantime, 3″ of 5lb memory foam on top of 5″ of HD foam certainly makes for a big improvement over springs…
We’re expecting twins, we we’re refinishing 2 craigslist cribs. There are a couple of latex crib mattresses out there (like the Nook Pebble, which seems to be priced for celebrities, only). I’m starting to resign myself to the idea that the girls can sleep on whatever babies r us sells. Organic crib mattresses are all $$, much more than we paid for the 2 cribs and the paint job.

Hi Young House Lovers :)
This is an old post I know, but I just wanted to let you know (and anyone else out there thinking about it) that since I read about SavvyRest in all of its organic goodness I couldn’t wait to get one for us. So this year, for our anniversary, my husband and I drove down to Eclectic Home in Portland, OR (thats the closest dealer to us, we’re Canadians from Vancouver), tested out the mattresses and pillows there, and ended up getting the Firm-Medium-Soft combo! And it is AMAZING- both of us have back problems even though we’re in our 20s (rollercoaster accident and an outdoor accident) and this is the best thing for us. Thanks for the recommendation! – Michaela

I’m in the market for a new mattress (I’m *really* interested in latex), and I just came across your post. Five years later – do you still have this mattress? Did it live up to it’s expectations? Thanks! -Jessica
