Tour Time

It’s heeeeeere. That fateful day when we finally get to reveal the finalized tour dates for our book, fresh from our publisher’s mouth (er, email).

A few things to note are:

1. If it were humanly possible we would parasail/glacier climb/spelunk to every last crevice of the globe to thank each one of you personally for reading our blog. But given all the factors that go into planning and executing one of these things, we’re extremely grateful to be able to slide through all of the places they’ve scheduled us – especially since this was originally going to be a much smaller tour.

2. For anyone who’s bummed that we won’t in their city, we actually have a mac daddy giveaway planned for this coming Monday (why yes it does include flying one lucky winner and a friend to Richmond for the November 8th signing… amongst other awesome things like delicious meals and shopping sprees). 3. There’s always the possibility that our tour could be extended again down the line (depending on how things go, more dates could be added). Heck, our Austin stop wasn’t even initially planned but pre-orders at BookPeople were so popular that they invited us out. Thanks people of Austin! So to anyone in a city that isn’t on the tour, you know we’ll keep you posted the second anything changes, which is definitely a possibility (ex: there’s talk of coming to the ATL area in Feb).

4. As for the blog while we’re away, we’re sure it’ll be a bit of a juggling act but we’re dedicated as always to keeping things fun around here. So we’ve squeezed in some extra projects (surprise!) that we’ll be unveiling while we’re touring. We’ve also lined up a pretty darn amazing gaggle of house crashings (check out a few sneak peeks below). Speaking of which… if you have an awesome casa in one of the cities that we’ll be visiting, please email us photos so we can possibly crash your house! And of course there will be window shopping and other travel adventures as well as some ridiculous/dorky video footage of some of our events/stops/flights, etc – you know we like to virtually take you guys with us wherever we go…

5. Clara and Burger will travel with us for some parts of the tour and will stay back with the grandparents for other more intense legs. They don’t exactly love planes, unfamiliar rooms, and missing naps/bug-hunting adventures, so we’re trying to shield them from as much of the insanity as possible. Leaving them behind for some parts of the tour will no doubt make us a little sniffly (neither of us have ever spent a night away from Clara, and Burger even came on our honeymoon!) but we’ve gotta do the best thing for them, even if it’s the hard thing for us.

6. We just learned that the folks who are making this tour possible and hosting us at each destination (ex: independent book stores, West Elm, Flor, etc) love when you buy a book at the event for us to sign. So if you’ve pre-ordered one already and would like us to sign it, we’re happy to do that (and so grateful that you did!) but it would be awesome to show some love to the host for getting us out there by purchasing a book at the event for us to sign as well. With the holidays around the corner, maybe you can gift the one you got on pre-order? Or ebay it for $100 (what? our signature is only worth 40 cents?). Or just use it as a decorating prop while you read the other one, like so:

Fun fact about the shot above: that’s not actually our book. It’s called a “dummy copy” and it’s basically just our cover printed out and wrapped around a completely blank book since ours are still off in Indiana being printed (right here in the USA, baby). We’re supposed to get our first preview next week, which will surely make us squeal like the Chippettes. John included (he fancies himself a Jeannette – I’m totally an Eleanor).

Update #1: Some folks are worried that books won’t be available for us to sign if the tour stops in your city before the book officially comes out on the 6th. The good news is that there will be stacks of books being sold at every single event (both at independent book stores and places like Flor or West Elm). Yay! But I better start practicing my signature since it’s nothing but a messy squiggle that looks different every time… ack.

Update #2: We wish we had more control over what cities we were stopping at! It really is all about who invites us where. So it really has nothing to do with how big a city is, it’s all about if a certain vendor or bookstore works with the dates/times/etc. The great news is that it definitely sounds like the tour might get extended, so stay tuned for those details as soon as they’re finalized!

Now, for those looking for more details about our stop in each city – here’s a deeper breakdown of each event (note that some of ’em require an RSVP).

  • CINCINNATI: Saturday, October 20, 10:00 A – Books by the Banks Festival, Duke Energy Convention Center. Talk, meet & greet, and signing. More details here.

    I travel for work and have a little one just a bit younger than Clara. I don’t know if anyone has given you suggestions or not, but postcards are great to send. FaceTime obviously–but don’t underestimate the power of a short video–30 seconds max. My daughter prefers the videos because she can watch them over and over. Also if they include boats, trains or animals that is always a bonus.

    I didn’t read all these comments so someone may have already suggested this but you guys should use your ‘dummy book’ to create a scrapbook of your book tour! Postcards and pictures of the places you visit, pics from your fans, you could even have people sign it yearbook style, etc. Just an idea :)

    I was pretty jazzed when I saw the sneak peek yesterday that you are coming to Cincinnati. If you can’t come to Indy, that’s the next best thing. I will definitely be at Books on the Banks. Getting the book early is like icing on the cake! Also, love that the book is being printed right here in the Hoosier state.

    Yay!!!!!!! You’re coming to Boston!!!!!

    The Boston tour stop already has over 150 people RSVP’ed… I’m thinking it will be standing room only!

    Also, I did not know there was a West Elm store actually _in_ Boston! How awesome is that??!? (There isn’t a Pottery Barn actually in Boston, so that’s a major win.)

      Ha! There used to be – but it’s been replaced by an All Saints. Which I prefer. And have no fear, the Restoration Hardware is coming back. It’s going into the refurbished Louis of Boston!

    OMG. You are signing in Wilton which is 10 min away from me! I can’t wait. Just RSVP’d. You’ll be my first signing and I can’t wait to meet you guys. My fiance and I just bought our first home,a ranch style:), and can’t wait to receive your book. Just to let you know the number you have listed might be a little off.     So excited for you YHL! Now will we get a post on how you two are planning to manage the stops that are so close together (i.e. Austin to Miami with only a day in between). I know you two are masters in organizing, I’d love to hear how the transitions will play out. Also, how does everything work; is there someone that meets you at each location, like a rep. from the publishing company or are you just responsible for making the exchanges? It all sounds so exciting! I’d love to know more of the process. Again, a big CONGRATULATIONS Sherry and John!!! :-D

      Yes, it sounds like we have “handlers” at each event so we have to fly out ourselves (and pay for Clara and a babysitter/relative if she comes) and then we arrive at the event and our handler tells us what to do! Haha!

      Oh yes, we’re happy to sign preordered copies!     Decisions, decisions…we can either see you in Ft Lauderdale or Miami. If we do Miami I am definitely going to have to drop at least 80 lbs. to fit in. ;o) Either way, it’s a couple of hours hike so I’m going to try and sell this to Michael as our family day trip. Eh? Hope it works out. I’m so happy you guys will be traversing the globe to some awesome locales. Shore up your Vitamin C intake now to boost your immune system. Bolthouse Farms makes a C Boost that is great. We just went to a huge convention and plenty of our friends came back with a wicked flu. We took about 4 oz. every morning and came back with nada.

    Very excited about Cincy. I posted on FB, but then it occurred to me – if you have any time for lunch or dinner while you’re in town (the day of/before/after/whatever) I’d love to host you – my family owns Buffalo Wild Wings and Smashburger franchises and there are a few not far from the Banks.
    Or, I can recommend a local place, my treat :) Let me know – I love getting so much from your site and would love to give you a meal in return :) Or, let me know if you need a ride anywhere if you don’t have a car. But I know you’re probably swamped, so if you are all taken care of, I understand! Either way – have fun!

    I guess I didn’t have any hope for Monterrey Mexico to made the cut…I just have to figure out a way to be conveniently “sick” by November 15th so I can make it to Houston (it’s a 7 hours drive..not very near but the nearest) visit family + meeting the lastest addition to the fam + YHL fest!

    Here is hoping I can make it….anyhow…can I enter the giveaway if I’m not in the states?…although I can totally make it to Laredo (2 hour drive) if I win! :D

    I am SO excited you are coming to Austin! You’re going to love it. I’m already thinking of all the places you should eat. haha I wish our house was finished, so you could house crash it, but it’s, uh, definitely “in process” (We’ve been here less than a year). I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned this. Or what your plans are for your “dummy copy”. But since it’s blank, have you considered taking it on tour with you, and having people at your book signings sign the pages? Kinda like a year book. Then you could read them when you got home. Just a thought. :)

    Yes yes yes to an Atlanta stop!! I am originally from Fairfax, VA but I’m a freshman this year at Clemson University (I am one of your younger readers, love you guys!!) The DC stop (20 min from my house!) falls during school time, insert huge sadface here. I would totally make the drive to Atlanta to meet you guys!!! Thanks and I couldn’t be happier for y’all :]
