We found these babies at a yard sale and haggled them down to $10 a pop. Let’s call them our twig & berries.
We immediately thought the extra tall shape of the frames would be perfect for either side of our bed above the glass based lamps on the makeshift just-for-now side tables (they’re way too small and don’t have any drawers for storage) on this very unfinished side of our master bedroom:
We definitely had plans to change out the art. They’re prints of the berries and wildflowers of Alaska (which is kind of fun and fitting since we honeymooned there) but they felt a bit too grandma for us.
But we loved the long rectangular shape of those $10 frames. So we hung them up, just to see what we were dealing with. Don’t mind all the blank space on either side of the walls, we still have furnishings to add to fill up this cavernous room. And once we change out the side tables we might rehang the art a bit further out from the bed or higher up depending on the new furnishings.
We definitely liked the shape of our new frames, but we weren’t crazy about how the warm wood tones sort of clashed with the darker tones in the thrift store wood candle holders on either side of Sir Ram above the bed…
… along with the leaning mirror, and the leather chair in the corner:
And yes, we’re aware that not all couples aspire to sleep under a giant resin ram head. We are indeed a rare and special breed. Akin to centaurs and unicorns. Speaking of that above-the-bed stuff, we originally mentioned that the maybe-too-small-art might go, but months later it’s still there and has strangely grown on us.
But back to the yard sale frames. I actually decided to do something completely insane for me when it came to them (but totally ain’t-no-thang for anyone else). I opted to spray the frames with oil-rubbed-bronze spray paint. I know you might think that given my recent ORB kick (here and here and here) this isn’t news. But, you my friend, would be wrong-O with a capital O. Why? Because virtually every frame that we own is white (both in this house and our first one) and we must own five million of them! Dark frames have never been our preference. White is my eternal jam..
Until now, apparently. Total curveball. At least to a white-frame loving fool like me.
I’ll spare you the spray painting play-by-play (you can find some general tips here) except to point out these two things:
- the glass was so tightly fitted that I worried I’d break it if I tried to remove it before spraying – so I just covered it with newspaper
- I laid each frame up on a big ol’ rock from the yard so the sides wouldn’t stick to the “drop cloths” and peel off the finish when I picked them up
While I was at it I carefully removed the mats and sprayed those white for a cleaner look.
Now brace yourself for the hottest picture you’ve ever seen on the internet:
My white mom legs + black dress socks = sexy beast. I can’t believe I’m sharing this, but the whole dark sock thing is actually a spray painting trick I implement nearly every time. Instead of worrying about getting rogue drips on my shoes or flip flops (or my feet, which I could then track into the house) I just don some dark socks, spray to my heart’s content, and slip them off at the backdoor so I don’t track anything in (and don’t have to worry about scrubbing my feet or ruining my favorite shoes/flip flops). As for the rest of my outfit, I’m nude. Just kidding. I wear painting clothes that I do not slip off at the door (big drips only seem to fall on my feet).
A few minutes after snapping that photo was when John and I both started giving each other crazy eyes. Which means we were both having strange and exciting ideas (ideas that are completely unrelated to bedding each other under the ram – get your mind out of the gutter).
John: “What if we put those old botanical-looking prints back into these now that the mat and frame is all updated and graphic?”
Sherry: “Just to be suuuuure we’re completely over them – I agree!”
So we hung them up and we really liked them. So we are in fact completely under them (you know, as opposed to over them as we originally anticipated). Sure, they’re still a little grandma, but they’re also something we could picture in Elle Decor or House Beautiful (with more than a $10 price tag on them). And most of all, they make us smile.
Here’s where I’ll stop to acknowledge that not only is hanging a big white ram head over your bed one of those personal preference things maybe-I’m-crazy things, art in general is definitely a place where all folks on the internet won’t come together and unanimously agree. But we’re loving our twig and berries – er flowers and berries. I mean it’s not like we’ll ever entertain in our bedroom – so we don’t have to worry about what other folks might think. Which I hope is nothing weird and kinky due to the ram. Yikes.
Speaking of weird, we got an embarrassingly huge kick out of hanging the berries on J’s side and the flowers on my side. You know, because ladies have flowers and guys have berries. Too far? My deepest apologies.
Then something crazy and completely unexpected happened (manage your expectations, our lives are not that interesting).
John decided to exercise his veto power on the leafy duvet cover that we ordered around seven months ago.
Didn’t see that coming did you? See, back when the duvet cover was one of the first things we bought for our house (deeply clearanced from West Elm) John agreed that we could get it (we have a full agreement agreement, meaning we’re not allowed to buy things without both being ok with it). But he only agreed with one stipulation: that it wouldn’t necessarily be a forever choice. He reasoned that it was affordable enough and I loved it enough not to keep me from ordering it (I was so worried it would sell out and I’d forever regret it slash hold it against John The Tyrant). But he asserted that if someday he should decide that he no longer liked it I would have to be open to looking for something else that we both could love – especially if the price was right and we could sell this baby on craigslist or something.
At the time I grinned and nodded, never thinking that day would actually come. But wouldn’t you know it, John loved those 10 dolla (holla!) yard sale art infinitely more than the compromise duvet. So he decided we should revisit the whole new-duvet-cover-idea and leave the art as-is (since it was kinda circus-y and compete-y to have them both going on at the same time). And you know what? In an even more shocking turn of events I agreed.
Maybe we’re just sentimental suckers and sleeping between prints of wildlife from the place we honeymooned is our idea of romance? Maybe we think rams and flowers and berries somehow belong together? I don’t know. Either way, the leafy pattern in the duvet cover was fighting with our new leafy art so I stripped things down to our white duvet insert from Ikea and we stepped back to survey the scene.
The weird white duvet insert was definitely more compatible with the art than the competing leafy duvet cover, but not quite perfect. Meaning a white duvet cover isn’t going to be what we go for. We’re hoping to find something with less of a bold pattern and more of a subtle texture (like a soft chevron or crosshatched design or something striped or something else entirely). The jury is still out on what will come home with us, but we’re planning a few HomeGoods and TJ Maxx runs just to see what’s out there. And maybe even an Ikea road trip.
The lesson? Grrrrr, don’t compromise. Just hold out to find something you both love. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20, right? And I like to think the Alaska prints “found us” because it was meant to be. And we certainly had our fair share of decorating mind-changing in the first house, so it’s only fitting that we work in a few control-alt-deletes in this house too (look honey, it’s a bad computer joke that I threw in just for you).
So yeah, we’re thinking about selling the old duvet cover on ebay or craigslist. There are some on there for over $100 and we only paid $42 for our king-sized guy thanks to sales and coupon codes. So who knows, maybe we can recoup the entire cost and list it for $45 in great-but-slightly-used condition. We shall see…
As for what the kids think, Clara toddled into the bedroom and gave the new art two thumbs up (not lying, but she does happen to do that gesture a lot). And Burger gave it one paw sideways. He’s such an art snob.
Do you guys have any duvet cover switches or “rewinds” going on? Has anyone else had their man exercise veto power in a surprising but serendipitous-in-the-end way? Does anyone else spray paint while wearing black dress socks or sleep under a white resin ram? Yeah… probably not.

I LOVE the prints, and I actually really love the white duvet cover! But I’m excited to see what else you come up with too. Bedding is so great because it’s such an easy change, I change mine seasonally. :)
Rebecca P says
Grandma-esque is totally cool these days Sherry, and those pictures are kind of shabby chic now, perfect! I would have done the same with the flowers and berries on those sides of the bed – LOL. What about a waffle textured duvet cover? Luxurious and stylish, yet subtle. Do it!
YoungHouseLove says
That could be nice for sure! We might have to do a little duvet fashion show with a few options…

Those prints actually look great beside your bed! Another great find :)
AKMama says
LOVE the “grandma” Alaska prints. Of course, I am a bit partial. You two are such a bunch of sentimentalists. :) It’s cute – like the frosting on a cupcake. Decorated with rams .. in white.
Carol says
I love the side tables!! I’m looking for something pretty small like those since we don’t have as much room in our master as you do (lucky duck). Are they a random find or did you pick them up somewhere where I might be able to copy?
YoungHouseLove says
Those were from Target a while back. Hope it helps!

Had you considering sewing a new duvet cover if you can’t find exactly what you want? It may not necessarily end up being cheaper than buying one (depending on the cost of the fabric) but you could make sure you get something you 100% agree on. Design Sponge has a nice tutorial for sewing a duvet: http://www.designsponge.com/2010/03/sewing-101-making-a-duvet-cover.html
YoungHouseLove says
Ooh thanks so much! I’ll have to check it out!

this post cracked me up! i laughed out loud when i read that part about you spray painting in the nude (+ black socks). haha.
i really love the new framed art, and i think nixing the duvet cover was a great decision. while it is pretty on its own, the room already looks so much more sophisticated without it (and plus the new wall art). i like the white bedding too but i think other options will also work as long as they are subtle. what if you get a white or neutral quilt so doesn’t compete with the rest of the room but adds some texture?
YoungHouseLove says
Mmm, texture. That’s the name of the game. We definitely could go for a quilt or even a throw if we find something we love!

The duvet is so pretty and I always thought it worked so well, especially after you put up the horse canvases. But the art prints are perfection (what can I say, I have grandma-ish tastes) especially with the jazzed up frames, so I’m excited to see what you two end up with to make the prints pop! I wish it was possible to see both sides of the room at the same time to see how the vintage prints and the modern canvases complement each other. In any case, loving the progress!
YoungHouseLove says
See the photo in the beginning of the post with the leaning mirror with the horse art in the background? Just picture that with a white duvet. And then scroll down to look at the art. Complicated, huh? We’ll have to try to take some pics (once we get a new duvet cover) of the whole room for ya. The art is on opposite walls so it’ll be impossible to get them in the same pic, but it’ll help if the duvet cover is the same in all the pics. Haha.

Jenny says
You’re gonna test out the duvet cover in the guest room, just in case it’s perfect there, right?

I could play with it in there for sure! That space already has tons o color and pattern though, so it might be too much…

I love the prints and am so glad you kept them!! The nod to your honeymoon is just too sweet to pass up! I’m excited to see what sort of duvet you find!
Nora says
I should probably get those black socks. My clothes are slowly getting completely paint covered…
I LOVE the new prints and white comforter. I was never a huge fan of the West Elm comforter (too mod for my taste) and I was cringing at the thought of you getting rid of those print! I love the new style quilts with patterns embroidered/stitched onto them in neutral colors (I think I saw them at West Elm/PB). It looks a lot cleaner/less busy so you can have more cool things like the rams!
Emily says
My boyfriend and I are moving next week, and we decided a new duvet cover was in order to celebrate our new place (we’re super exciting, I know, heh). The duvet cover I’d been drooling over at Target of all places went on clearance yesterday; it’s a nice tone-on-tone large scale white floral that he actually didn’t hate! Woo to the hoo! I think it would look really cool with some botanical art like the ones you guys just hung, so thanks for the inspiration!
Charisma says
I just got a new white duvet (maybe it’s just an insert?) yesterday! We’ve had a blue patterned one (not cute like yours) for ages that I always turn upside down ( is that even the right term?) so that the solid blue shows and not the printed side. I’ve wanted white for SOOOOO long but the Mr. thinks it’s a stain and dirt magnet but I finally rebelled and all he said was, ‘it’s going to get dirty.’ Yay!
Alexa says
Oh – I love the duvet! Sorry to see it go. But, I do see your point it was all getting too busy.
I like having a couple so I can swich between them. In the winter we have a beautiful textured silk duvet cover that was the starting point for our room paint colors and a white Ikea duvet for when the nice one is at the cleaners. In the summer I switch to a clean, white bedspread.
Have fun hunting for a new duvet – I’m sure you’ll find something fab!
Cristy says
None of the above, but I do have a set of 4 framed postcards from my honeymoon. Honestly one of my very favorite things we have hanging in our house (ok, technically sitting in a pile while we remodel our bathroom, but you kwim)
Libby says
ps. i’ve been struggling to find the perfect bedding for my guest room for YEARS and i have yet to find it. i’ve searched marshall’s and target relentlessly and i’ve ordered countless options online and sent them back. i’m to the point where i wonder if the rest of the room needs to change around the bedding, but i’m not sure i’m up for that much work (i’ve already painted the room twice since my husband and i moved in). its frustrating but i know one day i’ll find the perfect thing!
Emily D. says
Ok Burger the art snob just made me giggle-snort my diet soda right out of my nose. I should know better than to drink while reading your blog!
My husband (also known sometimes as John The Tyrant for vetoing stuff) have the same agreement when it comes to our home. Definitely works out for the best!
Kate says
I like the flow/berry prints, they remind me of one we had when I was a kid that was of animals and plants in the Michigan sand dunes.
We have the opposite issue right now, a king bed but no blanket or comforter. All we have is a set of white sheets (which is not my favorite set of sheets ever, but they were cheap at TJMaxx and we had to have a set to sleep on) and a blanket from our old queen bed. I guess I’ll have to keep trolling TJMaxx so that we have something by winter!
Bryanna S says
oh man, I would LOVE to have your duvet cover. Whomever buys it is very lucky… it’s so pretty!!
Also, I don’t have the art hate at all. It isn’t something I’d hang in my home, but I really love how your room is coming together. Your home is SO fun to watch evolve.

If you’re just not a fan of the pattern as your duvet cover, maybe re-purpose it as fabric for new curtain in your playroom or somewhere. I keep thinking that $45 dollars for all that fabric is a STEAL! but maybe that’s just because I’ve been working on curtains galore for many many big windows (over 12 yards for just 1 bedroom!!)
YoungHouseLove says
We definitely have thought about trying to reuse/repurpose it somewhere. Not sure where we’ll end up!

Sherry, I want to buy your duvet! Seriously! I’m in Richmond and would totally buy it! I’ve been looking for something for months that would fit with the curtains that I already have for my MBR. I think the green in your duvet would work. Plus, the soothing teal could flow over into my Master Bath for the “spa like” feel.

Aw thanks Aryn! We’re thinking we’ll put it on ebay and share the link whenever we do!

Kristen @ Popcorn on the Stove says
I actually liked the prints! You guys definitely made the right choice painting those frames with the oil-rubbed bronze paint. There’s a lot of white in the room, so they really stand out! As long as you have a white mat it’ll look awesome (old photography trick, mounting pictures on white to make them look stronger btw).
As for the ram, I sorta wish he was bigger but it’s all personal preference. For example, I am a big penguin fan.
Sydney says
Love, love, love the juxdaposition of modern, classic, and vintage.
In our house, we’re going from a slightly older version of West Elm duvet (http://www.westelm.com/products/organic-cotton-pin-tuck-duvet-cover-and-shams-b340/?pkey=corganic-bedding) in dark sand to this West Elm quilt (http://www.westelm.com/products/ruffle-stripe-quilt-shams-g381/?pkey=cnew-bedding-arrivals) in honor of summer and to lighten up our bedroom (which is painted a pretty, but room-darkening shade of Williamsburg blue).
It’s ordered, but still in route. I’m a little too giddy about the change!
YoungHouseLove says
Oooh I love both of those! Especially the pin-tuck one.

Kathi says
I just bought that quilt for our bedroom – it’s super comfy and looks great on the bed!
Kathi says
I just did the same thing this week – our white duvet from Ikea was too bulky for summertime use so I put a lightweight quilt on the bed that I just bought on sale from west elm:
http://www.westelm.com/products/ruffle-stripe-quilt-shams-g381/?pkey=cquilts-blankets
And I paired it with the cute Mr & Mrs pillows you showed in your Fab Freebie last week – so cute so I had to buy ’em!
Sydney says
I just bought that one, but we haven’t gotten it in the mail yet. I hope it’s as cute in person as it is online!
Kathi says
@sydney – it’s really cute…only downside is that it’s off-white and clashes with our white dust ruffle…but it’s really comfy too!
Sydney says
@Kathi – Woo! We need it to be off-white, so that’s excellent news. However, I’m sorry it clashes with your white dust ruffle. That’s a bummer.
Gudrun says
Love this post! And maybe that’s because I find the term twig & berries so hillarious. Love the prints and don’t think they look too grandama-ish! I think they look great and add a lil something to the room. Great post! And can’t wait to see what you guys do with the duvet cover!!!
Jodi says
I loved this post. First, I never thought of spray painting an old mat. Brilliant!
Second, I love the direction that the new botanicals will take your room – much more sophisticated. I am with John. Never really liked the duvet – not that you care, of course! Maybe you could add some more dark framed pictures on each side of the new pics to beef them up. Loved the effect of the framed pictures that wrap around the sides of the room in your inspiration picture. Also, I know you like your ram, but seems very, very small for where it’s at – the inspiration pic shows a nice alternative.
Have you ever thought about putting the Ikea light fixture in your daughter’s room? Seems like it would look better in there given it’s playful nature.
I am getting really excited to see your new clothespin fixture!
YoungHouseLove says
That fixture is too giant/hangs too low to be placed in any room that you have to walk under it. But we love it in our bedroom!

Loves! The ceramic ram looks more fitting sans the leafy duvet. Which sort of made me think the ram may be hungry. One note, which more genius designers probably know- don’t toy with pin tuck bedding! We had one from Anthropologie that was great years ago, then bought a For Now one at West Elm. I love it, but tis totally impractical. Every time someone pulls or moves, we hear a thread pop from the tuck. ISH.
YoungHouseLove says
Ooh never thought about that. Thanks for the tip.

Have you ever checked out the Graphics Fairy blog? http://www.graphicsfairy.blogspot.com/ She posts free vintage images everyday that I have used as art all over my house. Your new prints totally remind me of some things she has posted in the past. Thought you might want to check it out since I know you love a deal (and free artwork is always good!).
PS- I love the white comforter, but can’t wait to see what you choose in the end. Keeping a white comforter clean could be a pain, especially since Burger loves to cuddle up in there! :)

Loving the duvet change and I think the honeymoon Alaska art is very sweet and meaningful. :)
The hubs and I are about to make a change to our duvet situation. Our room is painted a beautiful mustardy gold color and we have a solid brown duvet on the bed. We decided to bring in some color with the Duncan stripe bedding from Pottery Barn. I love those stripes and the gold in the duvet goes perfectly with our wall color. :-)

When I started reading, I was hoping (and had an incling) that you would keep the prints. They are vintage-chic! And I like them ovelapping with the lamps, for the the record.
I agree with the choice to pull the duvet – it was a bit too busy with the wall color. But as you say, these things are a work in progress and you never know until you try.
Shelly says
Have you considered dyeing your duvet cover? It depends on the fabric of course, but if you dyed it a dark color you’d end up with a more tone on tone pattern that could blend in better with the rest of your bedroom… I’d probably opt for a charcoal color.
Of course this could be that I’m currently obsessed with all things grey (and lime green- I’m blaming y’all!) and am also about to attack several items of clothing with RIT dye. :)

I did think about it for a second or two. But we’re not sure if we like something a bit lighter to pick up on Sir Ram and the white mats and all that. We’ll have to see where we end up!

So this means I can finally say I didn’t like the old duvet cover! Sorry. Not that it matters – it’s your room!!! I am loving the new fresher look. While reading this post I was thinking, that bedspread totally clashes with that art. And then I read further down and realize you changed it.
I just bought new bedding, had orange and red before and now have bright floral pattern mix. My roommate asked me if my Grandma moved in. That hurt a bit!

We had the same dilemma. We had a duvet cover that we loved, but it didn’t fit in with our new house. I wanted something clean and simple. Enter… Overstock! We got this one in white/lt. blue. The blue actually goes well with our deep slate blue walls, but I think it would work well with your wall color as well (it’s the kind of blue that could be ok with different shades). One year later, we still love it! It is soft and comfortable. The only complaint would be that it usually needs ironing after laundering.

Ooh pretty! And six months before getting something you love isn’t bad!

you should hold on to the duvet just a teeny bit longer and see if you can’t tear it up for awesome throw pillows. Maybe a comfy cushion for Clara’s reading nook? That print is just amazing and very “you”, but maybe just not on the bed.

LOVING the white with the berry and twigs!! Super awesome. I also kinda love the ram, but not so much the things next to it. (sorry for offering my opinion when you really didn’t ask). You guys rock.
Random, out of the box question- how do you know when something should be spray painted vs. painted?? I want to ‘paint’ a couple wood dining chairs and not sure if I should paint or spray paint. One I previously painted the other is a folding wood chair from cost plus.
YoungHouseLove says
We usually always paint large wood furnishings (since spray paint can be tacky and drippy and harder to control than a small foam roller or a brush) and spray smaller things (like wood frames, metal candle-sticks, wood chair legs, etc). Hope it helps!

Love the new art! We just got a $15 mini acrylic street scene in a nice chunky gold frame from a D.C. street yard sale! Nothing in D.C. is that cheap! Question for you – do you spray paint your matting often? I love the price of the IKEA frames and the frames themselves are great – but the matting in the white frames are sometimes a little not as white. Didn’t know if this was a good pick me up for the mats without having to get new mats!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yeah- we sometimes just paint them with a brush or spray them if we have white spray paint on hand and it’s not raining outside! Haha. The trick is thin thin thin and even coats. And lots of drying time.

Love those prints! I think it’s awesome that you kept them. Did you try the frames moved out a bit more, like out of the line of the lamps? It’s looking a little claustrophobic around the bed there….. Maybe it’s a perspective thing because I’m just looking at pictures?
YoungHouseLove says
We held them up in a bunch of places and settled on that placement because we liked it best for now- but as we switch out the side tables and add other furnishings that we’re missing we’ll most likely scoot them over or up or something- so it’s a just for now hang-job. Haha.

Love the twigs and berries, but I think you should take a little more inspiration from the Country Living image and put the top back on your bed! Maybe the light fixture could work in the office or dining room instead??
