Ok, I keep mentioning that Katie B and I had some fun stared into each other’s eyes for 48 hours straight and she posted about the whole shebang right here (update: Katie’s blog is giving her issues, so maybe try clicking over later or tomorrow instead of right now). And by whole shebang I mean the part where Will went to the bathroom in the tub (numero dos) while bathing with Clara. And how Jeremy and John accidentally wore the same exact beverage themed shirt on Sunday…

But back to our little Goodwill excursion. We decided that trolling the aisles of a thrift store in search of stuff that was take-home worthy might be blog worthy (“might” being the operative word). So here’s what we came away with: an 11 minute video of two giddy weirdos who giggle like 5th graders whenever some sort of innuendo slips in. So to answer your impending questions: no, we don’t know what our malfunction is. And yes, this regression is probably Freudian. So think of us not as adults and mothers but as two immature gals who can’t calm down for thirty minutes to make anything remotely polished and posed. For those at work who can’t watch it, just envision twelve year old girls braiding each other’s hair and jumping on the bed while having a pillow fight after applying sparkly nail polish and swooning over a Bon Jovi poster. And for those who can watch it: I’m sorry. We just can’t help ourselves. Tweens may get hyper after too much sugar during a sleepover, but we’re like that at Goodwill at noon.

A few things to note:

  • We used our usual insane method of video entry by squatting and then standing up into frame (first established here).
  • Somehow we managed to reference male parts, maxi pads, and bras in under eleven minutes of tape. Yes, we’re ashamed.
  • Katie’s shirt is from the J Crew Outlet (I loved it so much I had to ask, and I figured you guys would too).
  • We used a bleep. Somehow they just make everything funnier (but maybe only if you’re us).
  • The way John walks through frame holding Clara while I’m talking about those tiny chairs kills me (it’s his Vanna White expression).
  • I’m wearing Katie’s flip flops, which is why they’re a little big (my wedges weren’t “proper attire” for running around all day).
  • There’s a dorky Friends reference in there. Almost immediately. Please tell me you noticed.
  • Katie is about a foot taller and ten times more glamorous than I am (aka: no need to comment about my short shorts + pasty leg combo).
  • People walk by. The intercom blares. But not one employee asked what we were up to or told us to stop. Even when we filmed at the checkout. Gotta love those friendly Georgians.
  • At one point you can hear the song “Yackity Yack” playing in the background. Sweet soundtrack, right?

Oh and we meant to work a little end section into the video about what NOT to buy at Goodwill, but since the video was waaay longer (and substantially more embarrassing) than we expected, we didn’t want to drag it out. So here are a few shots of what NOT to buy at Goodwill:

All in favor of not buying those things, say I. Oh and you might wonder how Jeremy, Will, John, and Clara kept themselves busy while we Flip cam’d our way through the store. Well, things like giant wooden spoons kept them entertained:

And while we’re on the Goodwill hunting topic (I’ll pause while someone says “how about them apples”), what treasures have you found at Goodwill or Salvation Army or other places of the like? Have you seen anything that was so mind-numbingly crazy that you actually had to pick it up and examine it more closely to make sure it was, in fact, real (for me it was the gilded ceramic double unicorn vase – I thought they only existed in alternate universes). Come on, it’s Thursday afternoon. Let’s gab.

Psst- A big fat thanks to sweet Katie Bower for being such an amazing host and friend and fellow weirdo. So glad we met thanks to this crazy world of blogging and actually surpassed the “blog friend” title to become real life friends. Miss you already. And you didn’t burn that fajita meat, it was just well done. Just the way I like it.

    Your descriptions of painting things reminded me of the scene from Tommy Boy when Tommy discovers there’s a mini fridge in his office. “You can keep six packs of soda in here … candy bars in the freezer…” And his dad says, “Yes, ANYTHING you want to keep cold.”

    Say, do you guys have a Goodwill Pound Store nearby? It’s the weirdest place I’ve ever been to. Everything sold there are leftovers from the other Goodwill stores and is sold by the pound (furniture is 50% of the original price). I usually wait until my thrift sense starts to tingle; often I manage to find just the thing I’ve been looking for.

    This video is hilarious. It should be a Goodwill advertisement (without all the cock fighting of course ;). I have a dresser like that one with the middle door and hidden drawers. Perfect for bras (not from Goodwill)!

    I just left Goodwill! We are having a DIY backyard wedding in July, inspired by…..wait, let me think……, hmmm…, YOURS, oddly enough! Much smaller though. About 40 people.
    It’s your average summer “elegant BBQ.” Well, we’re trying, anyway.

    So we’ve been scarfing all the unusual glass candlesticks/holders (which will make centerpieces) & plates that we can find. While still glass, each place setting will be its own story, as a prize, lovingly sifted through multiple trips to Goodwill. I’ve done well keeping focus at each trip, but today I purchased a pair of blue vintage glass candlesticks. I have no idea how I’m going to use them, but they are fetching!

      Yup, Target. It’s so funny because John wore a Dr. Pepper one on Friday and then inspired by John’s soda choice, Jeremy put on his Sprite one, only to see that John was wearing the same one when he came downstairs. Hilarious. Also funny that John owns so many soda shirts.

    I live in California, and I was struck by how expensive that Goodwil was. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a single item over $15 in any of ours out here (including furniture)! Looks like you two had fun and it made my miss by bff who lives across the country. =(

    Love the pictures – too funny! I have to ask – where did you get Clara’s hearts dress? I am in love with it – saw a little girl at a recent Farmer’s Market with it and felt too creepy asking the parents where it was from. Fated that Clara is rocking it now too! :)

    Okay…how long did it take Burger to get “full-sized”, and do you ever feel he’s safe around bigger dogs? Jeep is one-pound!

      He was two lbs when we got him and he’s a beefy 9 lb patty now. It took about a year for him to get full sized but he did gain a decent amount of weight by six months (maybe he was 6 or 7 then?). As for other dogs, we kept him on a leash with other bigger dogs (so we could all have a little more control if we needed to separate them or calm things down). We also just really left it up to the dogs temperment (some huge dogs are so gentle and it’s the other little ones that are hostile!). Good luck!

    That dresser looks like one my parents had. Nice and heavy!

    If a couple must divorce, it’d be nice to keep the entire set together. You get the chest and one nightstand, and you get the dresser and other nightstand.

    I wish I had the ability to go the shops like that and find awesome deals. I just find junk.

    OK, I am laughing so hard I almost peed my pants. And I’m at work. Those pictures of Clara and the spoon are hilarious!!! I’m dying. My co-workers prob. think I’m nuts.

    Looks like you guys had a great trip (to Georgia and to Goodwill.) Too bad my Goodwill’s ‘home department’ is just not as great as it used to be. Seems like more and more people are jumping on the thrift store band wagon and the racks have been so sparse lately. Bummer.

    I have a dresser nearly IDENTICAL to the one you “showcased.” (It was my grandma’s). Would you leave it be and let it be fabulous and solid in its (decent) finished state, or would you make it over, and if so, HOW?!?!

    Can you tell I’ve been staring at that dresser wondering what could be done with it for years now?

      I would probably paint it white. haha. Or stain it really dark but paint the top white like we did with Clara’s dresser. I’ve also seen bloggers paint it something like charcoal gray but then paint the indented framed out parts sky blue or something. So cool! Maybe just google search “painted dresser” or “stained dresser” to see what comes up under “images”?

      Holly at http://www.inthefunlane.com/ has some great tutorials/inspiration on her site for painting dressers like this…its amazing how many you can find of this style at goodwill!

    You guys are hilarious- missed the friends reference… but I have to say, I was in Snellville about a week before you guys!! Does Katie know that the saying is “everybody is somebody in Snellville” My parents and one of my sisters lives there. Also,this makes me want to go to the Goodwill, STAT.

    I absolutely adore your blog. I just found it earlier this week and yes I read every detail about the wedding! I’m a dedicated Goodwill shopper as well. Favorite finds: Italian high waisted leather shorts (just trust me), ostrich skin cross body purse, and yesterday I found 2 framed illustrations from my favorite kids book “The Tale of Peter Rabbit”.

    I LOVED that video. So fun. My goodwill gets a bunch of the returns from the local Targets, so every once in a while, I get some great scores (like brand new bedding for $10 that you could buy at Target for $80+, an unopened Leapster L-Max for $5, aero-beds for $10).

    But I had to laugh when I saw your doll heads. I bought a box of old doll heads at an estate sale, and everyone thought I was nuts. I sold them at an antique market for a lot of money, though! (I linked to my blog post with the creepy doll heads if you dare to look.)

    That video was just the diversion I needed this afternoon. Hysterical! But can I just say that I’m super jealous of Katie’s Goodwill Store???!!?!?! I NEVER find anything with that much potential at my local Goodwill.

    However, my heart skipped a beat, Sherry, when you showed the little wooden rocking horse and said you had always wanted to find one because I have one that is almost identical! It was a Christmas present from “Santa” when I was a little girl. My family and I moved around a lot and my mom always had to have us get rid of toys and things that we’d either grown out of or wouldn’t have the space for in the next place. But I resolutely refused to ever get rid of that rocking horse and it now sits in a spare room in my house that’s waiting to hopefully, someday, if my body will cooperate, become a nursery.

    Looks like you had a wonderful time with the Bowers. I love Katie’s blog too thanks to you. She seriously cracks me up and I love her style!

The entire time you were talking, I couldn’t get it out of my head how you sounded like Meg from Family Guy. And trust me – it’s a compliment because Meg is actually Mila Kunis and I love her haha. Hilarious video though!

      That’s so funny. I always get both Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman (already got each of them once). It’s so funny to me because I don’t necessarily think they sound alike, but it never fails to come up so it must be true! I’m like the voice of both protagonists in Black Swan. Hah.

    My dad used to have one of those coconut heads (except way, way creepier). I was scared to death of that thing when I was little.

    We have a super cheap thrift store near us that carries the weirdest things. I recently bought a kids’ book from 1980 titled, “The Case of the Midget Clown,” about, well, a midget circus clown who breaks his arm. The kids in the book go visit him at the hospital and he’s sitting in a wheelchair, smoking a cigar. It cracked me up and I had to buy it, though I doubt I’ll ever read it to my son because it’s just too weird.

    ok, I was in goodwill the other day (my favorite place)and this old lady comes over to me with a shoe in her hand and says,”look in there”. Big mistake on my part! There was a DEAD mouse in there!! Gross! The funny thing was she was still thinking about buying those shoes! Ewwww! Love your blog! I’m kinda new around here!

      I didn’t actually leave the store with anything (our car was packed with baby and dog stuff) but if I got it I probably would have kept the outside brown and painted the inside lime green or maybe even painted the outside white and the inside turquoise or something fun. Hope it helps!
