Wanna see a pregnant lady in a crib? Boom, there it is.
Yes, this is a story all about how my life got twist turned upside down I made our little man a mobile. It’s kinda rustic (it’s made from a manzanita branch) and kinda modern (there are fun circles in a bunch of colors and sizes that hang down at different lengths) and most of all it makes me smile. Is it weird that hanging this actually made me feel more ready to have the little guy in my arms? Like “OK, the mobile’s up – now the baby party can start.”
Much like the mobile I made for Clara’s room (that one was comprised of little floral orbs made from wire, faux flowers, and glue)…
… this one was pretty simple to put together. Clara even helped!
First I dragged my decorative manzanita branch out of the storage room (what? everyone doesn’t have a decorative manzanita branch standing by? well, that needs to be remedied). It was sold by West Elm a few years ago, so it has been bleached and debarked and it’s nice and solid – so there’s no worry of anything flaking off like old bark and falling into the crib. I thought leaving it this raw color would be a nice counterpart to the colorful round disks I wanted to add. As for the dangly strands, I had two paper banners from Target that I picked up for $2.18 on clearance a few months ago without any earthly idea of what I’d eventually use them for.
Once the mobile idea popped into my head, well, they seemed perfect. Except of course they were colors/patterns that didn’t really fit into the nursery scheme thus far. But it wasn’t anything a little craft paint couldn’t solve. So I laid them out on a few old cereal boxes from our recycling bin and Clara had fun helping me paint them. They needed two coats to cover those patterns underneath, but it was pretty easy to get done – even with a wiggly three year old assistant. Mostly it was one of those we-both-hold-the-brush-so-we-don’t-get-paint-all-over-the-strings projects, but she has a lot of pride over the mobile she made for “her baby” and it was a fun thing to do with her.
While those freshly painted circles were drying, I realized they probably wouldn’t be enough to fill out the entire branch (even if I snipped them into smaller 25″ strands). So I broke out some white embroidery floss and decorative paper. Using a few round items around the house I traced multiple versions of three similarly sized circles to the ones in the pre-made banners onto craft paper in similar colors to the paint I used. For the smallest circles I used the base of the craft paint that was still out on the table, the middle ones were from tracing the bottom of another slightly larger bottle I had, and the biggest circles were from the base of a small cup. Then I just cut them out, making sure I had an even number of each.
The even number was important since I used them to sandwich my white embroidery string with some Aleen’s Tacky Glue. Just pressing them together over the string after dabbing them with some glue dots seemed to do the trick, and I spaced them by eye, using the spacing of the Target banners as my guide (those were around two inches apart).
I made each strand around 25″ long, just like the pre-made banners that I had snipped apart to make sections of that length. When everything was dry, it was time to tie them firmly onto the branch at different increments for a nice dangly effect. I hung the branch over the back of two chairs so there was room for my strands to dangle while I tied them on, and I just randomly spaced them so they were all slightly different widths from each other.
At this point Clara was over the project and happily putting stickers on the window nearby (that’s a really nice look from the curb, by the way), but Burger did mosey on over for a peek as I went.
On the topic of hanging things over a crib, we’re definitely paranoid with a side of neurotic. For example, in Clara’s nursery we hung a mirror over her crib, but we actually drilled directly through the frame in multiple places to secure that thing to the wall so tightly that even John couldn’t yank it off the wall – even though it was out of Clara’s actual reach.
So although this mobile weighs a fraction of a pound, we relied on three heavy duty brass plated plant hooks (they each support 10+ lbs and have extra long screws so we could be sure they were either hitting a ceiling beam – two of them did – or a heavy duty anchor that we added) along with extra strong fishing wire that’s almost invisible, so it looks like it’s floating. We just knotted the fishing wire to the branch in three spots that needed some support (both ends and the triangular middle branch area) and connected them to the plant hooks that we secured to the ceiling, directly above those points. And that’s how this pregnant lady found herself chilling in a crib.
I really loved this way of hanging it since it’ll always be out of baby’s reach (this method makes it really easy raise if we ever think it’s within grabbing distance – although once the baby is more mobile we’ll drop the mattress so it’ll be even further away).
It’s amazing how much sweeter the crib feels now. Like it’s saying “bring on the baby!”
Once we got it hanging there was a split second where I wished it was a little bigger, just to fill up that wall more, but it’s almost three feet wide and around 16″ deep and 25″ long, so if it was any bigger the function of it might hinder us since it’s a real-life 3-D object that’s hanging there (we feared we’d hit our heads on it every time we leaned into the crib if it were much bigger). So after staring at it for a while I’ve come to peace with its size.
John actually ordered two samples of Spoonflower wallpaper that he thinks could be fun to further fill out that wall between the built-ins (a complete surprise to me!) so maybe we’ll end up layering in some sort of interesting color or backdrop behind the mobile. It takes 12 business days to arrive, so I can’t wait to get it. Might be a total “nope that would look crazy” moment, or something that we’re both enamored with, so we’ll keep you posted. We’ve also talked about some sort of accent color with paint, just between those two built-ins, so we’re definitely open to seeing where this thing goes.
Either way, it’s pretty cool to see a room that used to look like this…
… looking more like this these days.
As for what’s left on the list in here, there are just a few outstanding items.
- possibly tweak the wall behind the crib with wallpaper or some sort of accent color
- add an overhead light on a dimmer (nothing’s there at all right now)
- redo the closet for little clothes (paint it, add a second hanging bar or some cubby storage, etc)
- finishing touches (some other small art/accessories, etc)
- just add baby
It’s nice to be in the home stretch! Both for this pregnancy (I’m still having morning sickness at 33 weeks) and for the room. Most of all we’re just excited to meet the little guy who’s doing the macarena in my tummy right now. I think he’s a very good dancer.
Oh and since a few readers have passed along an awesome tip about making sure to look at a mobile from below to check that it’s interesting from that point of view, here’s what the bun will see when he glances up. Little spinning slices of color and a nice branchy background. Although I don’t think his eyes will focus that high up for a little while…
I contemplated adding something facing him to the bottom of each strand (ex: a small animal-shaped piece of paper that would look flat from the side, but read easily from his in-the-crib perspective) but since his bedding has elephants marching all over it, I wondered if it might be more soothing to just see some dancing disks. We’re definitely open to evolving this little creation as he grows though. So if he’s really into some sort of creature (remember how much Clara got into worms and dragons?) I can work those in later. Just don’t want to stimulate him too much since it’s a spot for sleep.
And just because it might be more fun to see a grown man lying in a crib than a pregnant lady standing in one, there’s this:
Is anyone else making mobiles? Or putting the last few touches on a different room that you’ve been working on? What about hanging out in cribs? I’m telling you, it’s kind of a good time.

Know what’s even more fun than a pregnant lady standing in a crib? A pregnant lady being coerced by a toddler to “snuggle wif me” in a crib that has been converted into a toddler bed in order to get said toddler to fall asleep. Between the giant belly, the crib being too short to fully extend one’s legs and the toddler rail that stretches halfway across the front, every moment was a delight. Not to mention better than yoga, as you try to find a way to silently and motionlessly contort your preggo body out of the toddler bed after the child has fallen asleep. Thank God for full size big girl beds, that’s all I have to say.

Question
Just wondering why you did not hang the circles so when the baby is laying in the crib he can see the colors / full circle …just curious as to how you choose the baby’s view?
the room is beautiful ..just like all of the ones that you do!
thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks Debbie! We mentioned things about the baby’s view in the bottom of the post for ya. We’re definitely open to adding something facing his direction as he grows, although snapping a picture of his current view made us think he’d get a kick out of those spinning disks of colors and the branchy background as well.

That mobile is awesome! I love the outdoorsy blue/green colors and the branch. No kids here but now I’m thinking about making a mobile for myself. I don’t have the patience for all that painting and glueing but I think it’s really sweet.

Hi guys,
How about a grasscloth wallpaper behind the crib? I know Sherry has mentioned that she would like to use it down the road, so maybe this could be a test run! It might add some nice texture to the space… :)
It’s looking good, in the neighborhood!
Best,
Annie

I made a mobile for our daughter from pre-cut butterflies strung onto fishing line and hung at varying lengths from a painted embroidery hoop suspended from the ceiling. I actually “sewed” two butterflies together (and secured with tiny iridescent beads on both sides) and then folded the wings so that they look relatively flat from both the bottom (her view) and the side (our view). I am so darn proud of that and will be moving it into her Big Girl room as we make way for her baby brother.
For his, I’d like to make a moravian star mobile, but I think it’ll just be too time consuming so I may outsource to Etsy.

Sounds really pretty Julie!

Looks great. I wish you guys would match the white balance on your before and after photos. Nearly every before photo on the site has a different (warmer) white balance than your after. It makes the contrast between the two more stark, but it isn’t a very accurate representation of the change.
YoungHouseLove says
Our camera is actually always on auto white balance mode, so that’s a constant among before & afters for this house (we used to manually white-balance when we shot with our D3000 a few years back, but have always favored the auto setting on our D3200). That being said, the befores might have been shot at a different time of day, or the camera might automatically do something different with the white balance in a room with white trim/ceilings/doors vs. a tan/cream/mauve one (this room didn’t even have white ceilings, they were a yellow-cream color). Any undertones that you see in the before photos are usually just a product of things that were going on in the room before. For example, the kitchen befores always looks extra warm due to all the orange-y wood that was everywhere, and the foyer befores look blue due to the blue trim/doors and wallpaper reflecting on things like the walls and even the slate floors.

I had to laugh when you asked if anybody else had a manzanita branch at the ready. I have one just like yours, except that I randomly got it at T.J. Maxx. Strange, right? It was a score for $3.99 or something. But since I’m from California originally (home of lots of manzanita), it made me homesick and I had to get it.
Right now, it’s living on top of a bookcase in our guest room — looking perfect as it is.

Such a wonderful room! I have no need for a nursery anymore, but I’m getting inspiration for other rooms in our home. On the rug, I found where you said it’s a Safavieh Martha Stewart rug, but does it have a name? I wasn’t able to find one with a quick search. Thanks!

So sorry, that’s all we know – other than it’s 100% wool and made in India. The tag doesn’t have a name on it.

I LOVE the mobile! What a great idea to paint the paper banners instead of making them all from scratch, I would have passed them in clearance for their busy pattern…
We similarly made a mobile out of spheres of craft paper and really like the results. On our second try we even used some flowers too, I was actually inspired by Clara’s mobile for that! Check it out: http://wp.me/p3Jhzg-2A
The room is looking so great, and a big congrats for your new arrival!

I love how this room is turning out! Have to admit, I wasn’t sure where it was going when the limey green curtains went up, but now I see how the mobile, toys, and blanket totally work with it! (Did Sue the Napkin help with colors? ;D )

So funny! Others have mentioned Sue and I forgot about her! I think she has some plum and stuff, but the grellow and kelly green along with wood/brown/tan is in there I think!

yep this is an odd comment…get ready! I have been reading your blog EVERY day for 5 years straight…and every picture of Joh has made me think…”gee he looks so familiar to me!” Then I met you in person at your book signing here in Ft Lauderdale, and again I thought, “have I met him before? WHY is he so familiar???”
And THEN last week, on our local “re-run the good old shows” channel I found the answer!! “Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of a tiny ship…” I say this with ALL love and respect…John you ARE (wait for it…) GILLIGAN! Next Halloween a long sleeved red shirt, a white bucket hat and some baggy jeans on your lanky self and there you have it!!! (luckily you are far more accomplished and coordinated but the likeness remains!) xoxo!

Hahahahah! No way! I had the biggest crush ever on Gilligan growing up. I don’t know if I should tell John about this discussion. He might think I only married him for his Gilligan-ish looks…

What a beautiful nursery. Love the mobile – just perfect. I am always so impressed by how well you guys FINISH things. We always seem to get tired and decide to take a “break” (that becomes permanent) at about the 85% mark, when it’s done enough to be functional but not enough to look good. Every time I read your blog, I think “look how great YHL’s room/project looks, I am going to finish some things!”
YoungHouseLove says
You’re so sweet Kelly! I can totally relate to the “good enough” slowdown. We sometimes bounce to other rooms way before we’re done (still wanna do concrete counters and update the kitchen floor for Phase 1, but nursery stuff is much more fun!).

Love the mobile! Another thought for the blank space – you could add some sconces to the sides of the bookcases. Perhaps swing-arm style or something with an arched neck that would fill some of the void. And they would be nice for the future when you slide a bed in the gap and remove the crib. That way your little guy could have reading lights above the bed. Just a thought!
YoungHouseLove says
Love that idea! That was actually in our original plans for the nursery (sconces on the side of the bookcases) but we’ve decided to hold off and add them down the line when we put the bed in (maybe from the back wall so they’re like reading lamps behind the bed?). Just didn’t think we’d use them much now (shining down on the crib) and we thought once our little guy gets a little bigger he might want to pick the color/type or something, sort of like how Clara has been more involved with colors/shapes/items that we bring in her room.

I love your mobile! I have done quite a few of these for baby showers and one on a pink spray painted tree branch with alternating little round mirrors and crystals hanging from the ends that we hung in the nursery afterward. I usually use glue, fishing line, scrapbook paper and 1-1 1/2″ hole punches and assemble the same way you did. I’m so glad it worked for you! And I just went with a green/yellow/gray/black/white color scheme for my son’s nursery too!I will definitely e-mail pictures to get your input. Good luck with baby boy!

The nursery looks awesome and Sherry you look so beautiful and preggers!!
Are you guys still going to paint the closet door green? Did I miss that? I hope I didn’t miss it! The pink closet door in Clara’s room is so adorable!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Tracy! Now that the room came together a little more we realized that the bold curtains + all the colors on the Expedit make the white door between those two things sort of soothing. In Clara’s room we had a white wall, white bed, and white canopy going on, so the door color was a fun way to break things up – but now we think we prefer a white closet door in here after all! Might add some color to the closet itself though, so when the door’s open there’s some playfulness going on in there :)

Super cute! Am I too old to have a mobile like that? Because I LOVE it!
I really like the idea of doing an accent color or wall behind the crib. The bright green or navy would be fun! And if you wanted to change it out later it wouldn’t be as much work as repainting the whole room. Kinda like Clara’s rain drop wall. Which I am also wanting in my bedroom, despite my “grown up” status.
Lela says
You look super cute pregnant Sherry! We’re expecting our first baby at the end of May and I’m currently making him a mobile too! I was inspired by some napkins rings I saw on Pinterest. I made thin feathers out of polymer clay and after baking, I’m painting them with metallic paint in gold, silver, and copper. They’ll hang in front of a sunny window so I’m hoping he enjoys his shiny, shimmering feathers! Good luck with your last few weeks of pregnancy! :)

You must be feeling so good with the nursery shaping up like this!! I know with my two children as soon as I had a place for them all set up I always felt like “ok, now I can have this baby…” And it’s so great to get to the end of a project like this where you are just finishing up the details.
You asked about people finishing up other rooms – we are done with nurseries, but we are finishing up work on our master bedroom – we’ve finished the skim coating, priming, painting (ceiling, trim, windows, walls), and refinished the floor. Now I’m sewing up some curtains then we are going to make our big switcheroo and install all the new pretty things we got for the room!
Good luck with everything – all my good thoughts are with you as you get ready for baby #2!

Looking good ! Love your colors, very classy but playful. Did I just dream up that you were going to put 2 sconces on the outsides of the built ins?
YoungHouseLove says
Yes we had those in our original plans, but I think now we’re leaning towards just getting an overhead light on a dimmer and adding something fun like accordion sconces on that wall between the built-ins once the crib gets upgraded to a bed down the line. That way he’ll have reading lamps.

You did much better than I did on cutting out clean-edged, uniform circles! Part of the problem may have been that I coerced my mom and best friend to help me, and I think we all had different cutting styles (although we all used the bottom of the same glass for tracing!). I ended up nixing the project because it was looking pretty sloppy and I didn’t have the patience for fixing it at that stage in the game. All those cut circles are still in my craft drawer, so if I ever feel like picking it back up I’m going to use your successful project for motivation. :o)
