You know how we hid a secret note in our first house to hopefully be discovered in a few decades? Well, we found one in our new house! It doesn’t appear to be very old, so we’re guessing it’s from the previous owners (who lived here for 22 years, so it’s still pretty amazing). Where was it? Tucked behind the large wall mirror in the hall bathroom. See that tiny nub sticking out under that wonky orange arrow?
While John was giving Clara her bath I was hanging out with them slash standing-around-staring-at-things-I-can’t-wait-to-update when I looked up and saw it peeking out of the top of the mirror. So I tugged on the corner, revealing a nice little printed note.
In case you can’t make it out, it read:
May today bring you peace within. May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are both of faith in yourself and others. May you use the gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content with yourself just the way you are. Let this knowledge settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise, and love. It is there for each and every one of us.
Isn’t that sweet? I dunno if it’s leftover pregnancy hormones or what, but it totally made me tear up. Because it’s exactly how we feel. Like we’re exactly where we’re meant to be. How cool are the past owners of our house for hiding this little gem? We think they’re the bee’s knees.
Have you guys ever found any messages in your home? Any initials with hearts scrawled in a kids closet, letters carved into concrete outside, or beer cans and old newspapers in the walls? Somebody tell me you found vintage “men’s magazines” somewhere. Scandalous.

Hey Sherry, I keep reading this over and over. I think I’m going to use this as a reading for my wedding in September, it’s perfect.

I know I am writing this over a year later but just wanted to share this. We had heard of this being done before so when we redid our bathroom we left a bottle of wine in the cavity between the bath and the wall. It was packaged well in bubble wrap so whoever redecorates in there in the future will find it. I also left a full newspaper – again packed well in plastic so it doesn’t get damaged.

I’m a bit late to this party, but I had to share. I was moving out of my last apartment and found tucked in the molding on the inside of the closet and polaroid of a naked woman. Everything about the photo looked vintage so I’m guessing it was there a number of years. Strangest thing I’ve ever found.

We haven’t found anything interesting in any of our houses yet, however when we moved this last time, we found out randomly through friends that the couple that bought our house, our friends had bought their old house 2 years ago!! (Did you follow that?) Apparently when our friends moved in they found a bunch of random personal stuff in the attic. Before we left our house, we had our friends move all of those items over and we stashed them in our attic—-curious what they will think when they moved into their new house and found some of their old stuff in the attic!!!

We found the measurements of the previous owners’ children on a door jamb, and the builder’s initials painted in our cellar stairs. No notes by the previous owners, but when we gutted our master bedroom we wrote a message on the wall under the sheetrock, and my husband put our initials in the corner of the concrete when we built our new garage.
Oh, and the previous owners left a Christmas ornament hanging on a wall in the dining room with a tack, so that now lives on our tree every Christmas. We’re only the second owners of our house, built in 1924, so it’s pretty cool to know that someday, someone might discover our notes.

No notes, but we recently moved into a different home in our small Minnesota town. It was built in 1990 by a couple. Shortly before it was finished the husband was diagnosed, and later died of cancer. He had built a garden for his wife with a small concrete path. In one corner, there’s a collection of agates. Our realtor shared a message from the seller(wife) that they were collected by her husband and daughters in their trips to Lake Superior. Needless to say, as long as we own that house, those agates aren’t going anywhere.
