Enough about our colorful stools…
…and on to our newest set of colorful chairs. Oh yes, we’re officially on a bold-colored seating kick. Remember we already have these $35 thrift store guys that we gussied up with green paint and fresh upholstery in the office?
And this zero dolla (holla!) hand-me-down highchair for Clara that we happied up with some sunny yellow paint?
Apparently it’s nothing but the best brightest for our buns. And this might be kind of shocker, but this time… we’ve gone red!
A pretty tomato red, to be exact. And it looks pretty darn tasty with the blue hydrangeas around the paver patio that we DIYed last May.
When we shared the big patio reveal pics last spring, we mentioned that we needed some nice solid long-lasting patio furniture, but would be saving our pennies for a while. So after 13 months of squirreling away $20 a month toward the cause, we finally had enough in our little patio-furniture savings jar to get two of these babies!
To refresh your memory, these old folding chairs from Ikea used to be parked there:
Which weren’t half bad looking… until you got a little closer.
That shot above doesn’t even do justice to the “hard life” that these old wood folding chairs now exude when you get a little closer. They’re peeling, cracking, creaky, and just generally kinda sad looking. We got two of them from Ikea for $100 over five years ago, and they were great in our former house’s sunroom for around four years.
But after we moved and stuck them outside in the elements, even though they were made for outdoor use, they weren’t looking nearly as hot anymore. Probably because they weren’t covered with any protectant (like weather resistant oil/stain/sealer/etc). But it’s ok. They were honestly not the most comfortable things anyway, and we’ve always had a full-blown crush on colorful wooden adirondack chairs. How dorky is that? The slope of the seat is just so perfect for relaxing, and we love the wide wooden arms (big enough to rest a nice cold beverage). Basically if there was an Adirondack Chair Fan Club, John and I would both totally volunteer to be the treasurer and the secretary.
But a good well-made wooden adirondack chair comes with a price (we tried craigslist/yard sales/thrift stores to no avail). So we’re not talking about $39 (like our new blue stools) or $35 (like our office chairs) or zero bucks (like our hand-me-down highchair). Hence all that saving. We’re not usually as methodical about saving a certain amount each month for a specific thing, but putting a monthly “payment” of $20 into a jar for lawn furniture actually worked while we continued to squirrel away whatever other cash we could spare in our normal savings account for other things. Our main money MO is usually just to save as much as we can in general – like by only having one car, giving each other haircuts, not eating out too much, buying a fixer-upper in an affordable city so the mortgage is lower than the rent on my tiny studio apartment was in NYC six years ago, paying off credit cards to avoid interest, couponing at the grocery store, etc (you can peruse over 30 posts on how we save cashola here).
So we’re usually saving up for multiple things at a time in one general savings account to be used towards whatever we think is next on the priority list (ex: the kitchen reno was something we saved up for since putting an offer on this house two Septembers ago, but during that time we also bought other things like materials for our DIY patio, a dining table, or a bed – since they would occasionally move to the top of the priority list). You can read more about our little money management method here.
Back to those new chairs of ours…
We successfully resisted our instincts to cheap out and get plastic ones because we’re enamored with the real-deal-Holyfield wood ones and knew that plastic ones would be what we call “an interim item” (something we’d buy but and then later be annoyed that we didn’t just put that money toward the actual thing we wanted and save until we could make it happen). So we generally try to avoid placeholder stuff. And lo and behold, this month we finally had enough cash in our jar to close the deal. But you know me, before I pulled the trigger I had to weigh a bunch of options. So here they are:
Contender #1: These guys were $129.95 (marked down from $144 each, with free shipping) from Joss & Main and came in the fun cherry tomato color that we loved. They’re made of solid premium cedar and painted with polyurethane paint for protection against the weather, heat, and sunlight.
We knew we could always buy an unfinished chair somewhere and attempt to paint it ourselves, but with so many cracks and crevices we didn’t want to end up with something that didn’t look as good (and wasn’t as protected in all those hard to reach spots where water could collect and cause problems). So chairs that came pre-painted by the pros with polyurethane paint for protection against the weather, heat, and sunlight definitely appealed to us as something that would hopefully stand the test of time. Just didn’t want to spend less but end up with something that looked shoddy by next summer. I guess you could say that we’re happy to save money on free/cheap indoor chair makeovers but worried that messing around with wooden outdoor furniture was more risky since they have rain/sun/other outdoor variables to contend with. But when it comes to metal outdoor furniture – we love a good DIY!
Contender #2: Next I found this guy for $289 – eeks! More than double the price. Back to the hunt.
Contender #3: This guy on Target’s site was on sale for $123 (also with free shipping), down from $174. But we didn’t like the look of this one as much as the first one (it felt sort of squat/less classic).
Contender #4: We also found this one at LL Bean but it was $299, so it wasn’t our first choice either.
Contender #5: Then we saw this guy in another Joss & Main sale, but he was $250 (down from $339) and we actually preferred the $129 tomato red color for our little hydrangea complementing plan.
Contender #6: Ballard Designs also had a plain white or wood one for $299.
So that’s how we found ourselves right back to our original find: Contender #1…
And about two weeks later, these guys arrived, and our little patio-furniture fund has officially been restarted (we still need other items out here, so we’re just going to continue our $20 a month habit).
After “some assembly” we finally had our sloped back, wide armed adirondack lovies all ready for use. I know this might not be exciting for you guys, but it was kind of epic for us. We even invited John’s parents over to see them. It was a full on viewing party for our adirondack chairs. There was oohing, ahhing, sitting, petting. All of it.
And sure enough, they look pretty perfect with these great balls o’ flower.
We’re definitely far away from a fully furnished patio, but we’re closer than we were before. Inch, inch, inch. We didn’t even think about how nice these guys would look with the warm wood tones in the fence and Clara’s rock box, so that was a nice accident.
We’re thinking we might start saving for a square woven outdoor storage ottoman like this next. Oh and see those blue garden stools? I got one at HomeGoods for $39 a month or two ago and loved it so much that I actually went back and grabbed another one last week (although the free black metal chairs that surround the second one – left by the previous owners – are only temporary). We really like how the blue stools tie into all the blue hydrangeas, and even the blue birdhouse in the tree (also a HomeGoods find from last year for $9). Heck, even the crazy blue rain barrel sort of fits into the scheme now. Haha. We can’t wait for those newly planted hydrangeas on the right side (next to Clara’s rock box) to grow enough to catch up with the 2-year old guys on the left. Once they’re all nice and big it’ll look even more garden-riffic back here.
So that’s the latest on our little patio. Have you guys been doing any outdoor furniture buying or saving? Do you think it’s crazy to pick chair colors based on flower colors? Or to have family over just to ogle some new chairs? Haha, it just might be.

During the summer months, I paint adirondacks for family friends. Usually Home Depot will have them for only $35 a piece, they are easy to put together, as well. They may not be uber fabulous, but they are comfy and inexpensive. But this tomato red adirondack idea is AWESOME!

Those look great! I love Adirondack chairs – although I now live in Canada and they tend to call them Muskoka chairs here! I’m also very jealous of your blue hydrangeas, they are gorgeous! My soil here is alkaline so the hydrangeas are pink unless you acidify the soil.
Crystal @ 29 Rue House says
1) I totally like planning outdoor decor with flowers and I think your’s looks great. 2) I feel the same way about those plastic adirondack chairs too – I kind of feel that way about most things that are meant to be wood but aren’t. 3) I found a bench for our front porch at the Restore for $45 a few weeks ago and I love it! It is so much easier to cozy up with the kids out there than in our plastic chairs plus it’s sturdy enough we’ve been able to take our baby’s booster seat out there, strap it on and eat dinner. Now I just need to add some pillows.
S'Mo (aka Sarah) says
I am also a member of the Adirondack chair fan club! I haven’t gotten any for my own patio yet, though. (It’s kind of small and subject to lots of leaf debris from the trees surrounding the property I rent.) One day, though…one day…
Also, after eyeing (what I think are) the PB shams that you have on your guest room bed, I found them during PB’s 75% off warehouse sale online–and bought a pair for my own guest bed! They’re supposed to arrive today, and I am super excited. Thanks for another great home-style inspiration!

I love it!! And your hydrangeas are so gorgeous!! Have you done anything special to make them grow so great? I planted one that died on me, but it was a gift one in a pot and I don’t know if it was not meant to plant.
YoungHouseLove says
We think the soil on this side of the house is magic. We haven’t done a thing! Yet we tried planting hydrangeas in our first house three times and they kept dying! I think they have a hard time in clay but richer more moist soil seems to make them happy without much work!

Love the color. Just wanted to mention, in case you wanted more…our Ace Hardware had adirondack chairs on sale for $29 a piece. We got four. They are great quality wood…you do have to assemble though. But the great thing was you can stain and weather treat or paint. We choose the staining but over all we love them. Right now, they are $49, but a sales associate told me they go on sale all the time. Here’s the link…you can also check out the reviews.

Hydrangeas are my favorite flower, so I’d definitely plan the color of a sitting area around it. I love the blue/red combo (I have red couches and I have been STRUGGLING with colors.. I have yellow pillows, green walls, nothing it tying in… maybe I’ll add some blue :) ). I love the red chairs you picked (not a huge fan of the ottoman but you guys have much better style than me).

Love the chairs!
This might be a bit off topic and I don’t think I’ve seen this info in any of your posts about your savings plans, but I wondered if you had a credit card program that you used (and paid off every month) in order to get points. For example, we have a Hilton Honors American Express where we get points towards a hotel stay for each dollar.
I’m always wondering what the best credit card is in order to get the most “bang for your buck” on points for travel or cash back or whatever for using a credit card. Just curious if you guys had ever researched the options. Thanks!!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, we do! Our main card that we use gives us points to cash in for items or cash back. After a year or two we usually cash them in when they run double-point specials. Once we got $1000! And I think this last time we got $500, which is still awesome for just buying what you needed anyway.

Wow I love that color. As soon as we have tackled our kitchen then we are onto our outdoor patio chairs. We are also very much so in love with Adirondack chairs. I perused Ana White’s plans for hers and we are going to build our own. We are still wondering if we should paint them or leave them in their natural grainy state. Who knows?
My best, Lynn

I JUST bought 2 patio chairs online this morning, and I’m waiting (impatiently) to get out of work to pick them up in-store. Hah, what a coinky-dink. :) Yours look great, and kudos for the Home Goods find! I might have to hit them up on my way home too!
Heather Gearhart says
These chairs look great out there! Awesome pop of color and pulls the brick on your walls out quite nicely!
I have a plan to repaint our patio furniture, one of these days. It is a scuffed up wood, that may be teak… but not 100% on that. ( I would keep all natural wood, but it had a stain that is peeling off and thats got to be fixed ) I was wondering if it would be best to go with a solid stain or would a spray paint of sorts work? The only reason I am remotely considering spray paint is because of those nooks and crannies since it is a slatted table and chair set. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
YoungHouseLove says
I think either could work if you’re really meticulous. Stain is thin, so it gets into cracks and crannies more easily than paint since it’s more runny. And spray paint is pretty good about getting into cracks too since it’s such small particles as you mention. Stain might hold up better over time and make wear less obvious (a DIY paint job could crack and peel after a while just due to the sun/moisture/elements outside, ya know? Hope it helps!

Meghann says
hey guys… love me some adirondack chairs.. love love love. my hubby and I would also be in a adirondack fan club…they are just so comfortable. Ok so my parents had a huge rehersal dinner for my brother about 5 years ago in their backyard and wanted some new chairs. We ended up purchasing some from Ace that were made out of cedar, unfinished and you had to put them together. We ended up going to the home depot and got one of their stains that has paint (whatever color you shoose) added to it so the color stays for a very long long time. They still look fantastic for staying outside all the years long. Granted we live in the bay area of California so no snow here, but they still look great. She just washes them off every summer. color is still good and no fading. Just an idea in case you ever want to add more chairs. oh and the price: I think they were $50 marked down to $30 each. oh and i forgot to mention…love the red!
YoungHouseLove says
That’s awesome Meghann! It gives me more confidence about DIYing something wooden outside stuff in the future!

Erica says
I’m pretty sure the ones we bought online last year are the same brand. (I love the red but our garden is surrounded by brick walls on 3 sides, so we got black instead.) We love them and they are holding up very well BUT, the paint on the flat top of the arms did start to peel a little bit over the winter. I think the flatness means that water can sit there for an extra long time. A quick sanding and some paint/poly and they’re good as new, but you might be proactive about giving the tops of the arms an extra coat of poly before the cold, wet winter weather.
(The paint is not supposed to fail like that and it’s my guess that the manufacturer would have replaced them if we’d asked. But I don’t really mind little projects and contacting them seemed like a) a hassle and b) potentially a waste of 2 really good chairs.)
YoungHouseLove says
So good to know Erica! Thanks!

Stefanie says
What about making them? I know I have seen some how-tos on annawhite.com for adirondacks. Just surprised you paid $300 for two outdoor chairs you probably could have made for half. Or the whole buying unfinished and painting yourselves thing. Is good outdoor paint really expensive? Just surprised to see my fave DIYers buy something they could have made.
YoungHouseLove says
It was $260 for two, which was one of the best prices we could find for pro-painted ones built to last! We mentioned in this post about why we’re worried about DIYing the paint-job (which we’d have to do if we built them) since it wouldn’t be made of that special polyurethane paint for protection against the weather, heat, and sunlight. So we just opted to save our pennies and buy something we thought would last instead of spending half as much to DIY something that might look shoddy by next summer. We’re definitely not strangers to DIY paint jobs inside when you don’t have to contend with moisture getting into some crack you missed while painting and rotting your chair though!

Stefanie says
Replying to your comment, not mine.
– True dat. It’s hard to find great outdoor (wood)furniture, and i’m sure even harder to make. My hubs made our patio table and that thing smelled like polyurethane for forever – so at least you avoided that!

Aw thanks Stefanie!

Love it! That is the color scheme in my living room (orange-y red and kind of a teal blue) so I was definitely drawn to the colors. I adore hydrangeas but I don’t think the blazing sun in AZ would treat them kindly. Don’t you think one of the best things about being a grown-up (I am almost there!) is realizing it is better to spend more money on quality than cheap out? I tell my husband when you buy cheap you buy twice (he learned a valuable lesson this way when he wouldnt splurge the first time around on the LG appliances I wanted).
YoungHouseLove says
Yes, I think we feel a little gunshy about our cheap Ikea wood chairs that we got for $50 a pop that looked terrible after less than a year outside, so in this case we just felt better getting something made to resist the elements that was a bit more (but will hopefully last a lot longer!). Haha. Maybe we’re almost grown ups too! Haha.

Beautiful! However, just one note of caution about the woven outdoor box. My husband got himself through college working as a junk removal guy and to this day he calls ANY outdoor storage boxes (wicker, plastic and everything in between) “SPIDER boxes” Eeeek. Maybe it’s different up there (we’re in Florida) but I just thought I’d throw the thought out there from experience to consider. :)
Otherwise, it’s shaping up so fun and happy–just like an outdoor space should be for you guys. We just splurged on a crazy-discounted lounge set from World Market that I can’t wait to put together!

So this is very random…but ahve you ever thought of doing a post on your go-to dinner recipes? I’m in a rut.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh man, we’re hardly gourmet chefs. Haha. Generally we usually have a pasta dish (sometimes just spaghetti with a side salad), a pizza (we buy ready made dough and add cheese and veggies), tacos (sometimes just veggie, sometimes meat or even shrimp), dumplings (meat or veggie- ready made) with edamame, chili (veggie or meat) and some other random dinner like a Trader Joe’s Bean Burrio. We save money by only having one or two meats a week and doing a lot of filling vegetarian dishes in between.

I’m totally surprised that you guys didn’t try to build/make these chairs yourself! I dated a guy who made me two of them – they were beautfiul and cost around $40 for materials. Then we painted them. They got the boot when the husband came around. But with John’s crafty skills…I was surprised he didn’t try first!

Check out the blurb under Contender #1 for that explanation! We knew if we built them we wouldn’t have a pro paint job with the good stuff (polyurethane paint for protection against the weather, heat, and sunlight) and we wanted these babies to last.
