No really, who are you people? You’re a mystery wrapped in an enigma.
To help answer that very question, we thought we’d use our blogiversary week to get to know you fine people a little bit better – who you are, why you read and how you think we can make Young House Love even better moving forward.
So if ever there was a time to comment, it’s now. Please – no, pretty please – take two minutes to answer the questions below. And if you’ve never commented before or are unsure how, it’s easy. Just click the number in that green speech bubble to the right of this post’s title and scroll to the bottom of the page. Real names and e-mail addresses aren’t required so the pressure is off. And if you’re still too shy, feel free to e-mail your answers to [email protected].
And since we’re already stealing a page from Decorno’s book by doing this poll in the first place, we promise to recap all of your comments at the end of the week, a la her State of the Blog Address. So here we go with the asking of the questions:
- Who are you? Male/Female? Age? Location? Marital status? Any kids?
- How often do you read Young House Love? (Daily? Once a week? Whenever you have free time at work?)
- How do you prefer to view Young House Love? (On younghouselove.com? Through an RSS reader like Google or Bloglines?)
- What are your favorite types of posts & why? (Easy DIY ideas? Before & after pictures? Design Dilemmas? Major home improvement undertakings?)
- What are your other must-read blogs? (If you have one of your own, feel free to plug it right here!)
- What advice do you have for us to make Young House Love even better in year #2?
- And, for fun, what’s one change you would make to your house (assuming time and money were no object)?
- Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world?
Thanks again for your time! And have we told you that you look lovely today? Because you do.

How do you prefer to view Young House Love: in my googe reader
What are your favorite types of posts & why? I like visual posts better than text-heavy. I dont usually read the mood boards unless I’m considering a similar project. Also, I’ve been to a TON of weddings in the past year, so I like the wedding posts too.
What are your other must-read blogs? Mostly friends/local blogs in St. Louis
What advice do you have for us to make Young House Love even better in year #2? keep doing what you do!
And, for fun, what’s one change you would make to your house (assuming time and money were no object)? completely re-do the kitchen with all green products…
Anything else you want us to know, or just gotta share with the world? I’m working on your dog silhouette artwork idea… I took the photos, now I just need to work in photoshop. I have 2 frames from my room when I was a kid that are brassy-gold. I’m going to spray paint them black and re-use them for this project.

I read this fun blog at least a few times per week. Being my age and being the sole owner of a home is intimidating, and I love that yall are young as well and have not been afraid to get what you want out of your home!
http://www.younghouselove.com
What are your favorite types of posts & why? Before and after pictures are my favorite because they have inspired me to start a list of things that I would like to find a way to implement in my new house.
What are your other must-read blogs? Still learning about the blogosphere in general. Can’t say I have found any that I like as much as this one!
What advice do you have for us to make Young House Love even better in year #2? Just keep doing what you do! Providing “real world” advice and inspiration on a real world budget on a daily basis! Oh, and more before and after photos.
And, for fun, what’s one change you would make to your house (assuming time and money were no object)? I would enclose the back porch to add more sq (and living room space) to my 1,751 sq ft 3/2/2 home. The back porch is just a funny elevated concrete slab that is connected to the back of the house, with a not-so-special view of my back yard (just grass) and my 12ft wood fence. Within the enclosure, I’d love to add a half-bath as well! Sigh, if only.. :)
Anything else? My house was built in 1958, slate brick, in Dallas. I love it!

What advice do you have for us to make Young House Love even better in year #2? Definitely incorporate more COLOR (aside from the cool blues and greens you use often)!!! I can appreciate an all neutral palette in someone’s else’s home, but would be very sad w/o bold punches of color in my own. Also, I’m not to keen on the wedding crashing thing, I usually skip over them.
And, for fun, what’s one change you would make to your house (assuming time and money were no object)? Add an incredibly luxe library.
Congrats on your one-year blogaversary!

Holy Lotsa Comments, Batman. We never imagined quite this kind of response (4 times our previous most commented post) and are totally loving it. The 162-and-counting of you are amazing. Thank you thank you for the info!
You know we try to respond to each comment individually as often as possible but there’s clearly no sane way to do that here. But trust us that we’ve read each and every word (many of which made us laugh out loud).
You’ve given us quite an undertaking when it comes to synthesizing all that you’ve said into a summary post, but we’re up for the challenge. Stay tuned for that at the end of the week.
‘Til then I will say no more…except “Thanks again!” and “Keep ’em coming!”

5. I have a variety of interests – home improvement, gardening, style (which I lack!), medical blogs, etc. I’m the only blogger I know in person, so I don’t have any friends’ blogs to follow.
6. I think the blog will change/improve (not that it needs to) over time as you guys get more exposure, which we’ve already seen happening with HGTV (so excited!), and so on. There’s nothing in particular I find myself wishing you were doing, I just look forward to whatever you come up with.
7. New kitchen!! Our home is a 100+ year old downtown terrace house. We’ve done a lot of work and all the rooms are up-to-date, except the kitchen. It’s old with crappy cupboards and drawers, a peel and stick floor we put over the old floor we just could not get clean, a boring laminate counter, and old appliances. You can’t have both dishwasher drawers out at once or the whole thing actually tips over and falls on you. Kitchens are just so expensive and we got married in February. Right now, we both agree – we should have eloped and done the kitchen instead of the wedding!!!!!!!
8. Love the blog, love your style. Way to go for making the blog work this past year. =) Can’t wait to see what’s in store for you!

I’m a 49 year old female living near Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I’m married and we have 3 children.
I read the blog daily (well sometimes I check in more than once a day as you guys really encourage me to do that by posting so often). I only check on the website younghouselove.com.
I actually love all your posts – you have great style and a chatty, informal, cozy way of writing that makes it seem like a chat over a cup of tea. I do, of course, lap up the before and afters.
I’m afraid I have 100s of blogs book-marked and I read many of them every day. My absolute favourite decorating blogs though are: Restyled Home, Just Beachy, Forever and Ever House, Ramblings of a Renovating Couple, Southern Hospitality, Just a Girl, Cote De Texas and Adventures in Renovating a Run Down Brooklyn Brownstone.
I could imagine you guys would be able to photoshop new paint colours for walls or furniture onto photographs. I’ve seen this done on the Candadian House and HOme Discussion Board and it made a huge difference in making decisions for someone as to the colour to paint. I could see you guys doing that for people who write in to have a mood/colour board done. I really loved seeing the alternatives on the actual photograph of the room. Just a thought although I really love all the stuff you are already doing.
I would re-do my kitchen if time and money were no object. We really need a dishwasher (with a family of 5 you can just imagine the dish washing time involved) and I can see so many ways to improve the design of the present cupboards, even though the house is only 12 years old.
Thanks so much for such an enjoyable blog.

4. I love the easy DIY projects – you guys inspired me to hang light fixtured myself at my new condo (who knew I could do that?). Before and after and mood boards are cool too (they’ve given me lots of great ideas).
5. I love the Freakonomics blog on the New York Times site, and also the “Blog” of “Unnecessary” Quotation Marks.
6. Just keep doing what you’re doing and keeping up with people’s new demands and new trends. You seem to always have something in the works, so it shouldn’t be too hard!
7. I’d redo my little galley kitchen totally – replace all my cabinets and everything. As it is I may just paint the cabinets and replace the counter/backsplash, which I think are from the 70s if not before.
8. Keep up the great work! I look forward to reading every day. Next time I’m in Richmond (my alma mater is U of R) I totally want to see if I can spot your place!

5: I typically read blogs from my family and friends since we like away from nearly everyone. I also keep up with Sandi Henderson’s Blog (a great fabric designer) and Smitten Kitchen (Great cooking ideas and recipes).
6: Keep doing what you’re doing. I think it’s great!
7: After living in Memphis, TN for 8 years, I have moved twice in 9 months. We are currenly in a rental since we didn’t know the area, so first I’d like to find the perfect fixer upper that has character, good bones and a great yard. Then I’ll probably change everything.
8: Thanks for promoting renovation. I think that more of us should be aware of what type of inpact we are leaving in the world. Revitalizing older homes and neighbourhoods is not only great for the communities we live in but it better for the envirnment. It’s recycling in an extreme way.

5. I read lots of cooking blogs (too many to list!) and yours. That’s about it.
6. Keep doing what you’re doing! I love the green post and would like to see more of those. I’d also love to see more “how to” posts especially since I’ll soon be doing some work on my own house like installing tile, drywall, painting cabinets, etc. Someone mentioned buying guides (for lighting, furniture, etc.) and I like that idea too. A lot of us newbie decorators have problems figuring out accessories and accent colors so I’d love a “dummy” guide about that. Do’s & Don’ts. Educate us!
7. I’d have to pick my 1985 basement complete with faded drop ceiling, wood paneling, and burnt orange carpet. That would be my first priority. I also need a bathroom remodel and need to paint and get new flooring in all 3 bedrooms.

7. We are currently undergoing a major remodel, pretty much doubling our square footage, so if we’re not doing it now, it’s not going to happen any time soon! (the best parts for me: completely opening up the floor plan, adding a huge kitchen island with cooktop–no more cooking on a desert island when entertaining–and tons more windows)
8. Not really anything from me, I generally prefer to read than comment.

Hi there,
Bing, female, 27, Singapore, single, no kids.
I read This Site daily! Or almost daily.
Via the website itself.
Favourite posts are wedding posts, DIY suggestions, before and after pictures. Because they are pretty nifty ideas for when I get married and set up a ‘young house’! :)
Must read blogs include Apartment Therapy, Ikea hacker, Wisecraft, Farmgirl Fare, Tastespotting, TED.com, and Caterina.net.
No advice, you guys have been awesome! Keep it up!
My house is pretty old – 24 years old, and my furniture’s been around for over 10 years. I would change EVERYTHING, and make it fun and colorful. Although, the first thing that would go is the boxy TV….get me a nice pretty LCD widescreen for all my DVDs. :) Mmmm. Sweet.

5. Not a big blog person, so you’re pretty much it
6. Make sure you take breaks every now and then so you don’t get burned out :)
7. Probably paint the entire thing (including deck that needs a refinish) and get the carpets cleaned

Female, 33, Ottawa Ontario Canada, Married with 2 1/2 yr old girl and 12 year old furry friend.
I surf to your blog way to often in a day, waiting, waiting. I’m a stay at home artist/diyer/putterer/mama. I’ve got a great life.
I pretty much like everything you’re willing to dish. DIYs, moodboards, before and afters. It’s your way with words that brings me back.
I frequent soulemama.com too. Cognitively working on my own blog…in good time.
Time and money? I would totally spaify my ensuite. It’s super lame with a crappy corner shower, bad colour and layout. I would rip it all out and start over, clawfoot soaker and all. Right now I am settling for Palladian Blue from Benjamin Moore.
As an aside, I ‘Secreted’ (from the movie The Secret)a new shower/tub setup and the shower started leaking into the downstairs bathroom. The plumber said the shower was crap and we’d need to replace it…part of the replacement will be covered by our insurance. How’s that for the Law of Attraction! ;)
Keep doing what you’re doing…it’ll all work out.

What advice do you have for us to make Young House Love even better in year #2?
I enjoy the personality that you inject into your blog & designs, as well as the afforadability – keep it up! I think it would be neat to see more before & afters as people complete them.
And, for fun, what’s one change you would make to your house (assuming time and money were no object)?
Serioulsy – ONE change. How about a billion?!?! Paint & decorate our master bedroom and bath, creatively hang family photos in our hallway, replace living room carpet, create a toyroom that doesn’t look like a toyroom, but an adult room with some toys (the toy room is the first room when you walk in the front door.), new furniture in the living room (that can withstand 2 kids and 2 dogs), a way to blend my new hobby of sewing into the main family living area without it screaming ‘SEWING STUFF’. Oh and I am always looking for wall decorations that mean something(if it is hanging on my wall or in my house and I have to clean it, I had better love it and it better mean something!) That should about do it for now…. of course there is the kitchen remodel that both my husband and I want to do when we win the lottery.
