Dude, my last trip to Ikea made me weak in the knees (especially since they rolled out a bunch of new stuff) so I took a bunch of photos for ya. Not for compensation or anything – these sprees are just for fun. So here’s a little virtual store tour for ya. Let’s get down to bid-ness.
Check out this gorgeous chair. I want him. Bad. This guy is the Storsele and it’s $119. The black lacquer-ish finish had me at hello.
There were also these beauties: Hogsten ($89.99) & Storsele in yellow ($119.99). Doesn’t that sound like a fancy store that sells… ties? Or cigars? Welcome to Hogsten & Storsele. It has a nice ring to it, right? And on a different subject, I totally want two yellow Storseles in my sunroom. I need me some Storsele, stat!
Then there are these guys. The name? Vittsjo (the small one is $40 and the big is $70). There have been some pretty awesome blogosphere makeovers with these guys (sprayed gold, white, teal, etc). Love that.
We also gave this little Stockholm Sofa Table ($199) a few looks. It’s charmingly mid-century-modern-ish. Nice legs ya got there girl.
They also had these new colored Malm dressers, which were $49.99 for the small one and $79.99 for the large one. I thought the teal color was nice and muddy (not too neon, sort of moody and smokey).
There were also these Slatthult stickers for $9.99, which could probably look pretty sweet in the right application (I’m picturing them in girl’s room with light light light pink walls and a bunch of white furniture and bedding) so it’s a pretty little pop of flower power in an otherwise understated space.
We tried to link to as many things as we could find on ikea.com in this post, so if you don’t see a link/price it’s just because we couldn’t find it (but if you love something I would just go to ikea.com or the store to see if you can find more info). No idea what this table’s name is but I thought he was charming. The price was good too, although I don’t remember it. I know, I’m useless. Haha.
Oh yeah and I liked this little pantry. Probably because I have a pantry obsession (someday I WILL have one!). It was just a small room they added shelving to (the Broder series) and made it all organized and pantry like. Cuteness.
Then we stopped to watch the cabinet drawers open and close a million times like a big kitchen robot (it’s a little durability demonstration). Clara was mesmerized.
Speaking of Clara, I thought this cute kid bedding was sweet. I could totally picture the woodland duvet on the left working in a rustic space with a faux sheepskin rug and some raw wood floors and beams. And the modern green duvet on the right would be sweet in a room with dark charcoal walls and sleek white furniture.
When it came to adult bedding, this Malin Blad duvet ($19.99) was cute. It was sort of inky, like someone sketched it with a ball point pen.
I grabbed two of these $7 pillow covers (Malin Figur) – couldn’t resist them. I could totally build an entire big girl room for Clara around them. Completely smitten.
This map pillow was cute too (Benzy Land, $12.99). Might look dapper in a navy den with lots of wood furniture and a brick fireplace. Kinda cozy meets pirate. Is that a decor style?
Of course I stopped to gaze up at all the fun fabrics (here’s their fabric page). These two were my favorites. The one on the left felt like a very very abstract ikat with the same soft colors as the pillow covers I got. Pretty. And the one on the right was sort of a modern floral illustration. So cool.
I’m also forever in love with these curtains. I’m pretty sure I take a picture of them every time we go.
John and I aren’t the only ones who check out curtains, here’s Clara completely immersing herself in curtain hunting. She was hilarious.
This kids light was also pretty funny (Ikea PS) since you could fill it with anything. So from matchbox cars to finger puppets or whatever else your kid is into, it’s kinda fun. Heck, it would be sweet full of colorful spools of thread in a craft room or playroom too.
This $10 poster was cute too (Bild, cosmos 4). Might have jumped in our cart since it looked so cute with my pillow covers. Yes, apparently I’m already well on the way to completing Clara’s big girl room (meanwhile the playroom is completely full of secret book stuff and unfinished projects that we have to deal with first). Oh well, at least I’m ready when that day comes…
This new little potting/storage bench was pretty cute too (Applaro, $126.96). The colorful blue planters on the top shelf = my kinda pots.
We also checked the As-Is section for deals and saw this guy sitting there waiting for someone to take him home. It looked new and was 33% off (and already assembled, which can be a huge plus if you have a big enough car to cart him home like that).
And so ends our Ikea adventure. Anyone else been there poking around lately? Were you as smitten with Hogsten and Storsele? Did you indulge in a delectable ice cream cone on the way out?
Notice we (and by we I mean Clara) had a little outfit change since we were heading to see the family? Probably should have done that after the ice cream cone…
Psst- Once again for the people in the back, we weren’t paid or perked for this post, I just like taking you guys shopping with me. Check out all of our other Window Shopping sprees (both here in Richmond and on the road, in big box stores or small local shops).
Pssst- We’re over on Young House Life talking about Burger. Specifically, what he doesn’t like. Dude’s got opinions.

I’m moving at the end of the month, and I’m planning to drag a friend with me to Ikea. I’ve lived near one for nearly 8 years now, and I’ve never been. I’m finally going to make it happen!
Katie says
Last year we lived in UTah and were only less than an hour away from Ikea. Then we moved, and now it’s like 3 hours away. It’s literally one of my cons when we were trying to figure out if we wanted to move. My catalog came yesterday, so I spent too much time going through it, but it’s just not the same as the store.
Anne @ itsabaltimorelife says
So I got their new catalog last night and I kept seeing this throw that looked navy and white striped. When I tried to look for it on their website last night I could only find a black and white one…did you see anything like that there????
YoungHouseLove says
I don’t think I saw that but we sort of ran through pretty fast with a toddler so it wasn’t an extra long trip!

Anne @ itsabaltimorelife says
Ahh yeah I know how that is ;)
Anne @ itsabaltimorelife says
Your post and my burning desire to find that striped throw sent me running to Ikea this past weekend…I confirmed it’s not navy and white but black and white! Bummer…still a cool throw though! Thanks for sparking my interest :)
YoungHouseLove says
As man sorry it wasn’t navy!

We’re going next Friday and I can.not.wait! I have like 37 post-it tabs in my catalog marking things I want to look at/buy. LOVE! :)

The digital catalog they did is really amazing. I get an ikea trip soon… excited!

I grabbed yardage of the companion fabrics to Clara’s big girl pillows, Malin Vag (picture a circle/dot over the “a” in that word), to make new curtains for our bedroom. The colors are more intense, and it has a plumish (it is too a word) purple and a brighter teal in it–awesome with our Danish Modern furniture. Happy happy!
…and if it helps, I’m not done with a couple of “small” projects in our room, but I got yardage two days ago for new box cushions for two DM chairs and our ottoman in the LR, and easy-peasy curtain panels in the den. Hubby didn’t roll his eyes until he realized I bought two different fabric combos for the LR chairs, mostly because he liked one better and I liked the other. Ummm, and also because the fabric was on sale at a warehouse clearance center–so I scored it for a mere $3 a yard. You heard me!
YoungHouseLove says
Sounds so pretty! And $3 a yard is awesome!

I’m really lucky, my husband has been begging me to make a big IKEA trip! I seriously lucked out!
meg shannon says
I bought enough yards of that pastel ikat pattern fabric to flank our play room bay window.I was stoked to show my husband and his response was, “it looks like Easter eggs.” This was over a month ago. Everyone I look at that fabric I think of deviled eggs and ham. I am still shopping for curtain fabric for the playroom but at least I have enough yardage of the Easter ikat print to make a quilt big enough for the largest Easter bunny ever.
Crystal @ 29 Rue House says
Those Storsele chairs are to die for! I got the Malin curtains that match the pillow covers you got! I love the curtains but still need to hem them up. Can’t decide whether to use the iron tape or sew them. What do you think?
You can see our curtains, rug that matches yours (we’ve totally gotten use to the wooly feel of it – never had a wool one before so it was odd at first) and our new, used dresser/console for the tv here.

I’m in LUUURRRVVVE with those curtains too. Also, I got my 2013 catalogue in the mail this week. Next to Christmas, the arrival of the IKEA catalogue is the most anticipated event of my whole year. Ha!

I have a woodland animal theme going on in my Baby’s room. That Vandring duvet (/collection) is right up my alley for when we move him to a big boy bed! Thanks for the tour we don’t have an Ikea of our own, so it’s a real treat.
Christine Schwalm Design says
I think that potting bench would be great in an entry, too. I could use something like that in my apartment. Of course, the fear of smacking my head on the shelf is something I’d need to conquer first.

Love the new Ikea stuff – Do you remember the name of that white cabinet in the first picture? Maybe it is just a bookcase with doors?

So sorry, I don’t. I would just snoop around on ikea.com. Good luck!

I have yet to visit the IKEA in Massachusetts, but my aunt got an AMAZING farmhouse sink out of the back section where damaged items are for a super cheap price. The corner is chipped and missing a little but all she does is put her soap dispenser over it and no one knows. It still sells for about $350 and she got it for $50. I love it. I’m not a huge fan of the furniture, but I do like the decor stuff I’ve seen and I would not be averse to filling my trunk with it.
Junk in the trunk, just what a girl needs in her life.
Jaclyn says
Oooooh, I’m drooling over that pantry setup too. Clearly my pregnant nesting instinct is kicking in. I now need to put paper towels in plastic tubs STAT.
Erin says
I love Ikea too, but I’ve been concerned about shopping there due to this:

One thing I liked about them was their effort toward sustainability–sad to think that may not be true. Had you heard about this? Any thoughts?

Oh no, I haven’t heard that! I agree that they seem very devoted to sustainability. Has anyone else heard of this? Any more info?

Always thinking positive! Looks like we will become better acquainted with distant relatives who live close to that Ikea! Now if only we had a reason to travel to Target every week. That went from being five minutes away to 45!

Ahh! I have two of the map pillows in my living room! So glad to see they’re YHL approved ;-)

We went in Atlanta a few weeks ago! I really love their kids bedding and have a feeling that one day that’s where we’ll get some (years down the road, ha). We picked up a few things, mainly some great sheers for our living room and a great vase in the damages area, but my favorite purchase? Little $3 popsicle molds. I’m easily amused.

My husband and I fell for the same curtains about two weeks ago. We actually had them in our cart for about 30 minutes (almost made it home with us). Alas, they were a bit more than we wanted to spend and not at the top of our priority list so they went back on the shelf. It was fun to see them show up in your post. Love seeing what you guys liked!
Karishma says
Ok, this is uncanny! I just moved into my new/first place and had been racking my brain for days to find 2 chairs for the living room, and late last night, while perusing the IKEA website, came across the Storsele, and was instantly smitten (and who can beat that price). This morning I come to your site and what’s the first thing I see? The Storsele! I guess it’s meant to be :P. (This is the first time I am commenting, love your site, it has been my morning staple for a few weeks now)
YoungHouseLove says
Haha- totally meant to be!

The boys and I went on Wednesday, we like a bunch of their food so we stocked up :D

The Vittsjo is one of my favorite purchases for our new house. It passed my boyfriend’s “sturdy test” and I think will incredibly versatile for years to come. We left it the black and glass as it matches our bedroom decor, but I picture it spraypainted a fun color, or replacing the shelves with wood for an industrial look in the future.
Bree says
Whaaaaaaat. I was just at Ikea last weekend (my second time ever… it’s a 3 hour drive away) and they didn’t have half of this stuff yet! Those colored Malm dressers? Nowhere in sight. And I would have noticed them, because our bed frame is Malm. Now I need to plan another trip.
I LOVE the pillows you picked up… I’m all about the use of color on them.
Jenn says
I’ve been dying to go to Ikea and now I feel like I’ve been. Love your blog and it’s the only one I ever read. I recently saw you guys at Stony Point shopping center and I immediately thought, Wow, they’ve had a long day, being up since 4 with the smoke alarm and all. Then I had a second thought which was: Woah. That’s just crazy and *almost* creepy that I know that! ha ha. Carry on, guys. Love your posts and your creativity.

Hahahaha, that’s so funny! Yo should have said hi to us at Stonypoint! We’re there all the time! Haha.

You must have invaded my brain because I’ve been wanting to paint those black+glass shelves brass and put that black Storsele chair in my home somewhere. I love Ikea.
Debbie C says
Oh man, how did I miss those lovely chairs when I was just at Ikea the other day? Oh yeah, I had a fussy toddler on my hands…sigh. Loving that Stockholm sofa table too! I didn’t get my usual ice cream cone, but I did get a lingonberry drink (love those!).
Jody says
Love that kid’s lamp! My little niece filled hers with her bouncy ball collection and it looks awesome. IKEA is so great.
Erin Rose says
Here’s a question for you guys that may be a tad controversial…. You try to shop and eat the most local, but you guys love shopping at Ikea, Home Depot, and other big stores that are definitely not the “little guy” on the street with the same thing to offer that is also built in the USA, not other countries. What are your thoughts about that?
Personally, my husband managed a small town hardware store and is struggling to keep up with the BIG Home Depot in town. He has been here for over 40 years and HD moved in just 3 years ago, totally engulfing his income. That really hurts when the little guy is pushed aside for the big shot consumer.
Anyway, just wanted to hear your thoughts. :)
YoungHouseLove says
Great question Erin! It’s all about balance for us. We also shop at local places (we love our local hardware store called Pleasants and have blogged about, along with local decorating spots like The Decorating Outlet, Williams & Sherrill, The Interior Outlet, etc). We also love to use craigslist and freecycle and frequent thrift stores as well as going to the farmer’s market! We try to show love to everyone whenever we can! In fact if you check out our window shopping posts, many of them are small local shops that we find during our travels!

We have and looooooove our Applaro. It just barely fits on our teeny balcony here in NYC, and it houses new and used charcoal inside. Two of these covered bins fit inside the bench perfectly! http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30218922/#/30218922

Ack ack ack, I am totally in love with those leafy curtains, but I can’t find them on the Ikea website! Does anyone know what they are called/how much they cost/whether they’ve been discontinued? I was just at Ikea yesterday… how did I miss these babies?!

Those were part of the Stockholm collection and I believe they were Blad. We bought a pair and returned them because the color didn’t quite work with our room. Like other Stockholm stuff, they were more expensive than what you usually expect to pay at Ikea. However, I don’t see this colorway in the Blad stuff on the website now! The pattern is right but the colors are not the same… I hope this helps in some tiny way!
Lissa says
They are the IKEA Stickholm Blad, green option

Just when I thought I was over Ikea- I got their new catalog yesterday and am now completely obsessed all over again!! Why do they have to be so good!? I really love all the outdoor options, the chairs you showed at the top of the post, and how they are showing the raw wood pieces painted in different ways- especially the graffiti dresser! So fun!
Amanda says
I got the IKEA catalog and drooled my way through it yesterday. And that very first chair in black is definitely being eyeballed.

Just a nitpick: “delectable” is actually spelled “-able” and not “-ible”. :) Happy Friday!

Lynn @ Our Useful Hands says
We just went on our first IKEA trip last weekend since marrying 8 years ago. We realized that since moving to FL and not having one nearby until last year we never stepped foot in one together. For shame! We left the kids at home with the grandparents and hit the place up. Spent a total of 5 hours with a minivan- parking-lot-lunch leftovers-doubles-as-dinner break in between. It was GLORIOUS!!! I wanted to pretend to be a mannequin and live in the store after hours like that movie from the 80’s. I got so many ideas and hopefully will be back in September to pick up some goods. At ours they had curtains hanging and then in between the bunches they put simple pieces of tied red ribbon hanging at different lengths. Red ribbon against a stark white curtain looks to good for words. I may have cut off an old woman in one of those electronic carts to cross the aisle and run up to oogle at that display. :o)
My best, Lynn
Kristen @ LoveK says
We just went to Ikea last weekend!! We took my sister who was an Ikea virgin so that was fun. She couldn’t believe how good the prices were! And we also picked up some Hemnes bedroom furniture while it was still 20% off. And the hubs and I definitely got an ice cream cone on the way out.
P.S. We’re also Ikea duvet cover twins, except ours is the beige shade. So maybe we’re not twins…more like brothers from another mother. :)
Sabrina says
Love that black chair! I have been wanting it for a good 18 months lol I also love those curtains but my husband said they look like Christmas! haha They have some new curtains coming out in a dark royal blue with white trees on it, I need them for our playroom! So lucky John comes with you, my husband calls Ikea the 7th circle of hell!
Sarah says
It’s a good thing I don’t have an Ikea closer to me — the one in Charlotte is three hours away, and when I stopped by in November (my only Ikea trip ever), it was like I found my happy place. I could spend so much money there, it would be a very bad thing. For now, I’ll just stick to Target, which gets a lot more of my money than it should! :)
Oh, and that picture of Clara with the ice cream cone is precious! She looks like such a big girl!
