Dude, my last trip to Ikea made me weak in the knees (especially since they rolled out a bunch of new stuff) so I took a bunch of photos for ya. Not for compensation or anything – these sprees are just for fun. So here’s a little virtual store tour for ya. Let’s get down to bid-ness.
Check out this gorgeous chair. I want him. Bad. This guy is the Storsele and it’s $119. The black lacquer-ish finish had me at hello.
There were also these beauties: Hogsten ($89.99) & Storsele in yellow ($119.99). Doesn’t that sound like a fancy store that sells… ties? Or cigars? Welcome to Hogsten & Storsele. It has a nice ring to it, right? And on a different subject, I totally want two yellow Storseles in my sunroom. I need me some Storsele, stat!
Then there are these guys. The name? Vittsjo (the small one is $40 and the big is $70). There have been some pretty awesome blogosphere makeovers with these guys (sprayed gold, white, teal, etc). Love that.
We also gave this little Stockholm Sofa Table ($199) a few looks. It’s charmingly mid-century-modern-ish. Nice legs ya got there girl.
They also had these new colored Malm dressers, which were $49.99 for the small one and $79.99 for the large one. I thought the teal color was nice and muddy (not too neon, sort of moody and smokey).
There were also these Slatthult stickers for $9.99, which could probably look pretty sweet in the right application (I’m picturing them in girl’s room with light light light pink walls and a bunch of white furniture and bedding) so it’s a pretty little pop of flower power in an otherwise understated space.
We tried to link to as many things as we could find on ikea.com in this post, so if you don’t see a link/price it’s just because we couldn’t find it (but if you love something I would just go to ikea.com or the store to see if you can find more info). No idea what this table’s name is but I thought he was charming. The price was good too, although I don’t remember it. I know, I’m useless. Haha.
Oh yeah and I liked this little pantry. Probably because I have a pantry obsession (someday I WILL have one!). It was just a small room they added shelving to (the Broder series) and made it all organized and pantry like. Cuteness.
Then we stopped to watch the cabinet drawers open and close a million times like a big kitchen robot (it’s a little durability demonstration). Clara was mesmerized.
Speaking of Clara, I thought this cute kid bedding was sweet. I could totally picture the woodland duvet on the left working in a rustic space with a faux sheepskin rug and some raw wood floors and beams. And the modern green duvet on the right would be sweet in a room with dark charcoal walls and sleek white furniture.
When it came to adult bedding, this Malin Blad duvet ($19.99) was cute. It was sort of inky, like someone sketched it with a ball point pen.
I grabbed two of these $7 pillow covers (Malin Figur) – couldn’t resist them. I could totally build an entire big girl room for Clara around them. Completely smitten.
This map pillow was cute too (Benzy Land, $12.99). Might look dapper in a navy den with lots of wood furniture and a brick fireplace. Kinda cozy meets pirate. Is that a decor style?
Of course I stopped to gaze up at all the fun fabrics (here’s their fabric page). These two were my favorites. The one on the left felt like a very very abstract ikat with the same soft colors as the pillow covers I got. Pretty. And the one on the right was sort of a modern floral illustration. So cool.
I’m also forever in love with these curtains. I’m pretty sure I take a picture of them every time we go.
John and I aren’t the only ones who check out curtains, here’s Clara completely immersing herself in curtain hunting. She was hilarious.
This kids light was also pretty funny (Ikea PS) since you could fill it with anything. So from matchbox cars to finger puppets or whatever else your kid is into, it’s kinda fun. Heck, it would be sweet full of colorful spools of thread in a craft room or playroom too.
This $10 poster was cute too (Bild, cosmos 4). Might have jumped in our cart since it looked so cute with my pillow covers. Yes, apparently I’m already well on the way to completing Clara’s big girl room (meanwhile the playroom is completely full of secret book stuff and unfinished projects that we have to deal with first). Oh well, at least I’m ready when that day comes…
This new little potting/storage bench was pretty cute too (Applaro, $126.96). The colorful blue planters on the top shelf = my kinda pots.
We also checked the As-Is section for deals and saw this guy sitting there waiting for someone to take him home. It looked new and was 33% off (and already assembled, which can be a huge plus if you have a big enough car to cart him home like that).
And so ends our Ikea adventure. Anyone else been there poking around lately? Were you as smitten with Hogsten and Storsele? Did you indulge in a delectable ice cream cone on the way out?
Notice we (and by we I mean Clara) had a little outfit change since we were heading to see the family? Probably should have done that after the ice cream cone…
Psst- Once again for the people in the back, we weren’t paid or perked for this post, I just like taking you guys shopping with me. Check out all of our other Window Shopping sprees (both here in Richmond and on the road, in big box stores or small local shops).
Pssst- We’re over on Young House Life talking about Burger. Specifically, what he doesn’t like. Dude’s got opinions.

i get so sad when i think that the closest ikea is about 6 hours away. that stinks! but, i love their stuff & don’t really mind making an annual trip. i especially love those shelves. i’ve seen them so many different ways on many blogs. they are so versatile & just great!

I love Ikea. I just went the other day, but didn’t buy anything major.
Hey, you don’t happen to know anything about the white cabinet behind the black chair in the very first picture, do you? :)

So sorry I don’t! Maybe troll around ikea.com?

hi Sherry
This is so beautiful furniture, desk and chairs.
In China, IKEA is what I like to go, because there’s something very beautiful.
In addition, you write the article is great!

my mom and I just took a day trip to ikea (our closest one is about 2 hours away). I got a little teal kitchen cart for toy kitchen storage and it is perfect! it holds all of my daughter’s toy foods and dishes and is the perfect size for tucking next to her toy kitchen. and I can’t wait until she outgrows it so I can figure out where to use it next.

(and I got those same malin figur pillows when I was there over spring break, and I love them but wish I hadn’t wasted the money on the ikea pillow inserts which seem too small)

Ooh I love that thing! I hear it’s sold out everywhere so you were lucky to grab it!

I visited Ikea for the first time this week…to start the layout of our kitchen/pantry/laundry room. I photographed that same pantry…love it. Hopefully we will have some serious progress on the rebuild of our house…and I will be inspired to bring my blog out of “park” to document our journey back home. It has been a long recovery since our tornado in March…picking out paint colors and finishes and roof shingles and cabinetry has made it to the forefront of our daily decisions…finally.
Keep those awesome decorating ideas coming…I have a WHOLE house to decorate. Very little of our previous life survived, so we are truly starting over. I am excited and terrified all at once…it took 18 years to get to where we were before.

Could you share some of these blogs that you follow who do IKEA makeovers? I’d be very interested in checking them out!
Thank you!

Centsationalgirl.com did an awesome one and I think I saw one on Little Green Notebook. There’s also a site called ikeahackers.com that is really fun! I think if you google the name of the furniture item from Ikea you might even come up with posts about what people did to alter them!

I bought the Stockholm Sofa Table last year and it is one of my favorite purchases from Ikea. It’s very sturdy. We have a Kramsfors sofa (which was discontinued) and the table height is just perfect behind the sofa. I got a fun tray from Ikea to put on the table to help keep clutter (keys, mail, etc…) somewhat confined.
Maryellen says
At work and couldn’t read through comments, so apologies in advance if someone mentioned or asked this!
I purchased two of the smaller Vittsjo shelving units off craigslist (great deal at two for $40!). I would love to spray paint them and have been looking at pinterest for inspiration. Any places I can check to see what others have done to spruce them up?
Thank you, and as always you guys are the best!

Oh wish I lived in that area because I really like that dresser! We live around the corner from IKEA (literally it takes as long to drive there and walk from the parking lot as it does to just walk there from our apartment) which is sooooo dangerous because I know if I go in I will leave with a bunch of stuff!
I also think that lamp would be pretty awesome in an even larger version filled with wine corks over a dining room table. Yep we’ve got a wine obsession around here…

I have that map pillow! Great for naps on the couch!

Embarrassingly, I have never been to an IKEA. ::Ali hangs head in shame:: Is this the one in Woodbridge? That’s the closest one, right? I think I need to have a specific object in mind to go, otherwise I’ll never get there. Would love to pick up one of those chairs!

We just took advantage of the Hemnes bedroom sale and got the queen-sized bed and 8 drawer dresser. Picked out some cute bedding that I forgot the name of and one of the glass-bottomed lamps, too.

We have the Hemnes bed and 8 drawer dresser and it’s fantastic! We’ve had it for 2 years and it still looks great!

What a funny coincidence. I was looking through Ikea’s fabrics online last night and decided I need a trip to Ikea this weekend to buy exactly those two you selected as your favourites! Hubby not happy because he knows a trip to Ikea never means “I’m just gonna grab these two fabrics”, lol.

I’m digging the “Hogsten & Storsele” store name and also the cozy meets pirate decor look! I haven’t been to IKEA in a while and this post made me want to clock out of work right now so I can start my 2 hour trek up to the closest one. Sigh, maybe tomorrow ;)

Thank you for this post! I haven’t been to Ikea in ages. I felt like we were buying TOO MUCH Ikea stuff and our home was become one of their catalogues, so I’ve been slowly editing it out of our home. But now, I have an urge to go check out their textiles and I LOVE that wicker chair, especially in the yellow!
And Clara looks SO cute in that last photo. :)

I absolutely LOVE Ikea! My poor husband is not a fan, but we live about 5 minutes from one and I admit, I spend many afternoons there browsing. Your picks are awesome, too! We actually have that dining room table in the light birch color paired with the dark espresso chairs. Love the validation that comes from choosing the same stuff as you oh-so-cool people!
Karisa says
When I downloaded the new catalogue I about died when I saw te hogsten lounge chair! I told the hubs it would be amazing in our office (which I am in the midst of revamping right now) and I am so smitten I might have to buy two of the taller hogsten chairs for our dining table… which I am sure is a bit wierd since these are probably supposed to be patio chairs, hah!
Vica says
I have the black storsele chairs and they are awesome! I would definitely recommend. Even my picky husband thinks they are comfy.
Christine says
I love the Storsele! That baby has been teasing me on the European Ikea sites for over a year. I wish it was outdoor-hardy. I think the Vittsjo shelves would make a really good room divider if you lined up a couple in a row.
Lissa says
My ex-husband, brother, and many friends work at IKEA. I can’t wait to go see the new stuff!
The As-Is section is great. A lot of it is stuff that either came from the display rooms, returned items because the person could not figure out how to put it together or did not like how it looked in the room, or several other reasons why it is there in perfectly good condition. I got my sofa table for 50% off there because the box was damaged. The product was fine!
With the Benzy Land pillow you showed, I am actually purchasing that for a pirate themed basement bar/hangout I want to put together. I am still working on wall color for it.
Jenelle Ricci @ Del Mar Designs says
I have to say that Storsele also makes me go weak at the knees. So cute. Were there any center/end tables that matched?

Speaking of Burger and Ikea, did you know in Germany they have an area outside of the stores now where you can tie out your dog? Shade, a bowl of water, and some faux grass.

No way! So cool – although Burger would die of fright from being surrounded by other dogs. But still very cool for all the normal dogs out there.

Oooh, I love the As-Is department at IKEA.
I once found a beautiful drop-leaf table sitting by its lonesome for $30 (originally over $150, with no scratches, dings, etc.). I somehow managed to drag it out to my car by myself but it was too big for my sedan. So, I then dragged it to the library next door to the IKEA, donated $5 to the volunteer working there to watch my new table, hightailed it to my mom’s to swap out my car for her SUV, and raced back to get my table. The volunteer was cracking up– told me he’d had a number of offers on the table in the 15 minutes I was gone!! It now sits proudly in our living room and I, of course, always tell that story to people who comment on the table. :)
Laura says
Ha! Loved your story!

I love going shopping with you. Sometimes, I don’t see the potential in something at the store by myself.
Susan (Between Naps on the Porch) says
Sherry, I love IKEA. I’m due for a trip so thanks for taking me there virtually. Okay, this is completely off topic but I just had to say, I’m getting the biggest kick out of watching Clara’s hair grow out in your recent posts. It’s amazing how fast it’s growing now. She’s growing from baby, to toddler into a precious little girl right before our eyes. Sooo sweet!
Okay, back to IKEA…gotta go soon and see all the new stuff! :)
YoungHouseLove says
Oh thank you for saying that! Maybe we’ll blink our eyes and it’ll be down to her shoulders soon.

This is unrelated to Ikea, but I have to ask how you keep Clara so entertained and happy on your shopping trips. I completely avoid taking my two-year-old anywhere he’ll have to sit in a cart unless I am fully stocked with lots of snacks, and even then he sometimes loses it! Any tips or tricks? Maybe she’s just used to going shopping with you? Or maybe I just have a wild little man, which is probably the case. :)
YoungHouseLove says
We definitely keep a stash of snacks with us, but often times it’s just about finding one object at the store that is “new and exciting” that she can hold while we shop. At Ikea it’s often one of their paper rulers, or a pack of napkins or something else completely and utterly thrilling to a two-year-old. It doesn’t always work and sometimes it’s a bit of a challenge getting that object away from her when it’s time to go (though we’re getting better at establishing upfront that “this has to live here at the store, so we’ll have to put it away soon”).

Jen@The Decor Scene says
I want a yellow Storseles or two for our Sunroom. OMG they are gorgeous!!! So what was in your cart with something that looks like birds I think? Napkins?
We were just at Ikea last week picking up a gift card. Of course we breezed through the store, but I didn’t see the Storseles chairs…NUTS!!! I guess they were only for indoor use right? But before we looked around, we ate some Swedish Meatballs with mac & cheese. Seriously, that is some good stuff. And it’s only $3.99 I believe when it’s a special. NICE!!! That is my kind of meal, good and cheap. ;)

I am having a serious case of the lazies about doing my daughter’s big girl room. She will be 3 in October, and she is still in a crib. I know I am terrible, but I wasn’t expecting the jump from nursery to big girl room would happen so quickly :( Here’s to accepting it and getting on that project.

I’m kinda pulling my hair out over that Edland dresser in the as-is section. I bought that sucker (full price) and put it together by myself (ok, I got a little bit of help from the hubby with tightening a few screws) while 8 and 1/2 months pregnant. It took ALL DAY!

Starr @ The Kiefer Cottage says
Those curtains you love, I believe I’ve seen Sarah Richardson use them in her designs. She goes to IKEA a lot. We live a day’s drive from there, which is probably a good thing for our wallets.
Another upside to the distance is that we sold a broken Hopen bed earlier this year. It was broken, mind you, and yet we had many inquiries and sold it for $50. The guy asked us if we had any other IKEA pieces because he loves them that much.
danielle says
i bet your blog window-shopping sprees keep you from spending “real-world” money. sometimes i go on crazy virtual shopping sprees and load up my cart at some online store to see what the grand total would be and it satiates the urge to shop without costing a penny. except- of course- for the oodles of time that i should be spending doing something else…
Lisa says
YHL saves the day, YET AGAIN! We have the green and white animal duvet in my son’s room, and I have been agonizing over what color to paint the walls… Never thought of charcoal. Hmmm… :) Someone might have a weekend project to do, and that someone might be me.
Seriously, does IKEA not have the best carts for zooming little kids around corners in or what? And yes we always indulge on ice cream on the way out. IKEA shopping is hard work.
Missy G. says
I’m so jealous of anyone with an Ikea in close proximity to them! The nearest one to me is in Houston, which is at least a 4-hour drive on a good day. Not really a day trip, so I’ve never been!
And I’ve been pining after the Edland dressers and wardrobes for about a year! Our bedrooms have teeny, tiny closets like your last house, so all my clothes are in the guest bedroom. I would love to one day flank our bed with the Edland wardrobes similar to how y’all did.
