Dude, my last trip to Ikea made me weak in the knees (especially since they rolled out a bunch of new stuff) so I took a bunch of photos for ya. Not for compensation or anything – these sprees are just for fun. So here’s a little virtual store tour for ya. Let’s get down to bid-ness.
Check out this gorgeous chair. I want him. Bad. This guy is the Storsele and it’s $119. The black lacquer-ish finish had me at hello.
There were also these beauties: Hogsten ($89.99) & Storsele in yellow ($119.99). Doesn’t that sound like a fancy store that sells… ties? Or cigars? Welcome to Hogsten & Storsele. It has a nice ring to it, right? And on a different subject, I totally want two yellow Storseles in my sunroom. I need me some Storsele, stat!
Then there are these guys. The name? Vittsjo (the small one is $40 and the big is $70). There have been some pretty awesome blogosphere makeovers with these guys (sprayed gold, white, teal, etc). Love that.
We also gave this little Stockholm Sofa Table ($199) a few looks. It’s charmingly mid-century-modern-ish. Nice legs ya got there girl.
They also had these new colored Malm dressers, which were $49.99 for the small one and $79.99 for the large one. I thought the teal color was nice and muddy (not too neon, sort of moody and smokey).
There were also these Slatthult stickers for $9.99, which could probably look pretty sweet in the right application (I’m picturing them in girl’s room with light light light pink walls and a bunch of white furniture and bedding) so it’s a pretty little pop of flower power in an otherwise understated space.
We tried to link to as many things as we could find on ikea.com in this post, so if you don’t see a link/price it’s just because we couldn’t find it (but if you love something I would just go to ikea.com or the store to see if you can find more info). No idea what this table’s name is but I thought he was charming. The price was good too, although I don’t remember it. I know, I’m useless. Haha.
Oh yeah and I liked this little pantry. Probably because I have a pantry obsession (someday I WILL have one!). It was just a small room they added shelving to (the Broder series) and made it all organized and pantry like. Cuteness.
Then we stopped to watch the cabinet drawers open and close a million times like a big kitchen robot (it’s a little durability demonstration). Clara was mesmerized.
Speaking of Clara, I thought this cute kid bedding was sweet. I could totally picture the woodland duvet on the left working in a rustic space with a faux sheepskin rug and some raw wood floors and beams. And the modern green duvet on the right would be sweet in a room with dark charcoal walls and sleek white furniture.
When it came to adult bedding, this Malin Blad duvet ($19.99) was cute. It was sort of inky, like someone sketched it with a ball point pen.
I grabbed two of these $7 pillow covers (Malin Figur) – couldn’t resist them. I could totally build an entire big girl room for Clara around them. Completely smitten.
This map pillow was cute too (Benzy Land, $12.99). Might look dapper in a navy den with lots of wood furniture and a brick fireplace. Kinda cozy meets pirate. Is that a decor style?
Of course I stopped to gaze up at all the fun fabrics (here’s their fabric page). These two were my favorites. The one on the left felt like a very very abstract ikat with the same soft colors as the pillow covers I got. Pretty. And the one on the right was sort of a modern floral illustration. So cool.
I’m also forever in love with these curtains. I’m pretty sure I take a picture of them every time we go.
John and I aren’t the only ones who check out curtains, here’s Clara completely immersing herself in curtain hunting. She was hilarious.
This kids light was also pretty funny (Ikea PS) since you could fill it with anything. So from matchbox cars to finger puppets or whatever else your kid is into, it’s kinda fun. Heck, it would be sweet full of colorful spools of thread in a craft room or playroom too.
This $10 poster was cute too (Bild, cosmos 4). Might have jumped in our cart since it looked so cute with my pillow covers. Yes, apparently I’m already well on the way to completing Clara’s big girl room (meanwhile the playroom is completely full of secret book stuff and unfinished projects that we have to deal with first). Oh well, at least I’m ready when that day comes…
This new little potting/storage bench was pretty cute too (Applaro, $126.96). The colorful blue planters on the top shelf = my kinda pots.
We also checked the As-Is section for deals and saw this guy sitting there waiting for someone to take him home. It looked new and was 33% off (and already assembled, which can be a huge plus if you have a big enough car to cart him home like that).
And so ends our Ikea adventure. Anyone else been there poking around lately? Were you as smitten with Hogsten and Storsele? Did you indulge in a delectable ice cream cone on the way out?
Notice we (and by we I mean Clara) had a little outfit change since we were heading to see the family? Probably should have done that after the ice cream cone…
Psst- Once again for the people in the back, we weren’t paid or perked for this post, I just like taking you guys shopping with me. Check out all of our other Window Shopping sprees (both here in Richmond and on the road, in big box stores or small local shops).
Pssst- We’re over on Young House Life talking about Burger. Specifically, what he doesn’t like. Dude’s got opinions.

Funny you should post this today … because I just got back from Ikea and am now in possession of a pair of those Stockholm Blad green print draperies that you love! I also got the Ransby drapery panels in brown for my teen son’s room, and the yummy thick textured Anita curtain panels in white to use in place of sliding doors for the guest room closet. Plus a green woven nubbly Gurly throw for the living room (goes perfectly with the Stockholm Blad drapes), some kassat boxes for office storage, and a planter that looks like a white-painted tall plank basket to use as a trash can in the guest room. Going to Ikea is so much fun, it always makes me want to just start redecorating every room all over from scratch.
Heather @ What Does She Do All Day? says
I was just there a few weeks ago and there was a lot of rearranging going on! I saw a few peaks of new items that I LOVED! I need to go back soon to pick up a few more things for my daughter’s new big girl room, so I’m hoping all the new stuff will be out. And I just got an email yesterday that my new catalog is on it’s way! Yipee!!!!
Tina Bland says
LOL so funny, I’m currently using the Benzy Land map pillow as my lap top cushion right now, I love all things maps! We have it living on our big red couch I call “Clifford” with other inky pillow!
Crystal says
I’m so in love with the Storsele chairs too! I think we are going to purchase them for our dinning room table (we have the Benchwirght Table from Pottery Barn). I just hope the arms will go under the table. We are off this weekend to measure and HOPEFULLY purchase them! Keep your fingers crossed for us.
Christina @ Homemade Ocean says
Oh how I long for an Ikea to be closer than 6 hours away. I will just continue to do all my “window shopping” through you guys :)
And I really want a bite of Clara’s cone! Looks delish :)
Anne says
I’m just curious which Ikea you go to?? I live in Richmond as well and like some of the things on this post!
YoungHouseLove says
We drive up to the one in Woodbridge. We’ve got family up there so sometimes we’re able to combine with a visit to them!

I spend way too much at Ikea, I’ve managed to be careful the last few times I’ve been but there’s gonna be a big one coming up soon. Brand new house calls for brand new things!
Krystle @ Color Transformed Family says
I got their new catalog the other day and I was so excited. I made myself a rule that I had to finish all my chores first before I was allowed to look at it. They have so many great new products!
Nicole says
Ahh I totally just hung those green curtains with the blue and teal flowers. I’m in love with them! Still trying to find an area rug that works with them though!

Me too!

Hi! I’m planning to lighten up the look of my currently-formal LR and repurpose a large and dark bookcase elsewhere in my house. You mentioned blogosphere makeovers of the Vittsjo shelving unit which I think would be light and perfect for the space. If you have one or two handy, would you mind sharing a link? Would truly appreciate some inspiration to get me motivated! Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
Centsationalgirl.com did an awesome one and I think I saw one on Little Green Notebook. There’s also a site called ikeahackers.com that is really fun! I think if you google the name of the furniture item from Ikea you might even come up with posts about what people did to alter them!

Ahhh, I love that modern floral fabric. They didn’t have it in fabric form when I was there, but they had it in curtain form (even easier!) so I had to snag them for my office!
Perfect match for my limey green walls.

Oh that BILD poster! And the ikat fabric, at Ikea, what? And the yellow chair, and of course the ice cream, yummm.
Aimee says
First ever post… can’t believe I’m so compelled to write one about non-dyi since I am a huge fan of your skills! Anyway, the Clara – ice cream – pic, looks like SNL’s Kristen Wiig in her Gilly skits! Those skits cracks me up everytime so I had to share my thoughts!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, someone totally said that when we put it on Instagram! Haha. So funny that she’s giving off such a strong Gilly vibe! Cracks us up. We love that skit too.

love the blue malm dresser! I actually just went to ikea in vienna austria this week myself testing karl :D I’m moving soon and I will get one of his brothers for my new place ;)

How timely! I was at Ikea not once, but twice! yesterday. They have so much new out it’s almost overwhelming. (It also doesn’t help that it’s about 10 minutes from our house….) We picked up two of the map pillows to use on a white slipcovered couch in our daughter’s new playroom – very adventurer/fantasy-play themed. And while I had visions of constructing a teepee a-la bowerpower, I also shamefully came home with the pop-up circus tent.

OMG! I love the pillowcase with the map!
I’m always looking on the IKEA-Website and I’m kinda often in the store, as we have two in town (that’s the point where I LOVE living in Germany/Europe…) but I haven’t seen this pillowcase before. When I’m next there I have to look at which price they are sold here! (And I have to think about where I could put my 15638th pillow. Oops!)
Kerstin says
12,99 €, a little bit more expensive. The exchange rate makes it cheaper shopping in the US at the moment, but I don’t know if saving two euro ist worth a flight ;-)

Gonna have to go to IKEA next week and use the gift-card I still have!

I have Ikea envy, big time. Even though I live 8 hours away from the nearest one I still stalk the site and get the catalogue. A little dreaming……..

I saw the Storsele chair in the new catalog and totally thought of you Sherry! I was giddy at the sight of the catalog in the mailbox yesterday.
Robyn says
Sorry for the off-topic comment, but you know what is the MOST depressing thing?! Being named Robyn R. But NOT the Robyn R that won the giveaway. I was about to do a CRAZY happy dance. But now the dance will just have to be fair to middling…:)
Better luck next time to this Robyn R! Hahahahahah!

Aw man! What are the odds?! Better luck next time, for sure! Haha.

The duvet and fill-it-up light are lovely.
I can only dream of a day when we own our own place. We’re on a “not buying anything for permanency” because the hub plans to do his PhD overseas in 2 years which means selling and donating everything we have (minus the books and personal stuff of course!) :-)
The hub is so confident that he mentioned it to our landlord yesterday and offered him first dibs on a bunch of stuff.

I was very excited to see the title of this post because I’ve been seeing sneak peaks of the 2013 catalogue all over the blogs/ instagram. I live in Sydney, Australia and the new range isn’t due out for another month!
Were most of the items in this post part of the new range? We’ve had a lot of them in store for ages. Like the stickers and the Stockholm sofa table and all of the textiles. I can’t wait to see our new range! Hoping the chairs come down under!
YoungHouseLove says
I’d say 50% of the items are new and 50% (like the stickers and the stockholm sofa) are old. I think the chairs and the pillow covers and that potting bench were most of the new items along with that inky duvet.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I’ve never been to Ikea (I live in the middle of nowhere), but occasionally stare longingly at their website and incredible deals. Prepared for a repeat oogle-fest today, I noticed you can now buy online! I’m over the moon about it!

Hey guys, I’m trying to find an old post that I read a long time ago about what you do when there’s something you love that just doesn’t match/fit in your house. Any chance you could direct me to that one? I believe it featured a navy blue rug that both of you liked but that just didn’t go with everything else.
YoungHouseLove says
So sorry, was it this one? We took some images out of old posts since we didn’t know who the photographer was and didn’t want to use them uncredited, but I think this is that post (just doesn’t have the rug pic anymore): https://www.younghouselove.com/2010/06/three-fways-to-pin-down-your-style/

kat says
No.. I don’t think it’s that one. It was a post about how there were some items you guys loved but that you just couldn’t reconcile with the rest of your house. I wanted to read it again because I just bought a super bold floral duvet (discontinued Ikea Renate Blom) that I just love but that doesn’t go with ANYTHING in my room (everything else is vintagey and has a lot of soft colors and beiges that just look muddy and wrong next to the duvet.. but I still like it all). I originally thought that if I liked things, they would just sort of fall together.. but right now it’s not working for me). I just wish I had more than one room to decorate!

OMG, I can’t wait to see the new catalog!
I bought that fun colorful print a few weeks ago. It’s fabulous!

I was wondering if you thought the yellow/blue floral illustration print fabric would be ok to use for curtains? I am 10 hrs away from the nearest IKEA, but was thinking about sending a friend who lives in Seattle on a hunt for me… thanks for your help!
YoungHouseLove says
I think it could work! I didn’t touch it, I just looked up at it (it was hanging overhead) but my inclination is that it would work, it just wouldn’t look super thick like velvet or anything (more like simple cotton curtains).

I got so excited when I saw the start of the post – I’ve had the Storsele page open in my phone for about 2 weeks now, I’ve convinced Matt (my husband) that we should get two to replace our ridiculously large armchairs. They look so comfy, did you get to sit in them at all?
Those pirate cushions are AMAZING! Unfortunately I don’t know if they’ve made it over here yet, but when they do…. yarrrr!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw man, I didn’t sit in them. Boo! But I heard from someone in this round of comments that they thought it was really uncomfortable and a few others who said they think it’s comfy – so I think it might depend on the person! Let me know how you like them if you get to sit in them! Now I’m so curious!

Those green leaf curtains came with our house – we had 3 in the basement. I really did not like them in the basement and one is now our paint drop cloth!! However, I still have 2 that are good if you would like to take them off my hands!

Frozen Yogurt is an essential part of every ikea trip!
My favorite thing at Ikea this year has been the Raskog Trolley. I don’t think it is ever in the showroom because they can’t keep it in stock. I live about 20 minutes from Ikea and i stalked the website waiting for them to get a re-stock! They finally got 4 in and I was at the store when it opened to snag one!

Do you remember the name of those IKEA curtains you posted? White background with green leaves and some red and blue mixed in? I’ve been looking for curtains for our living room since we bought the house three years ago, and those are fabulous! I could finally get rid of those awful blinds!!!

I think people have posted links to them (they come in two colors so when you look at their curtain section the softer toned ones are in the picture but when you click into them you can choose the bright green colored ones. Hope it helps!

We too always end our Ikea shopping sprees with fro yo. If I could buy an Ikea fro yo machine, I think I would. It is the BEST.

Hi, I am new to your blog and I am already in LOVE with it :)Love your post and tips around DIY. I recently moved from Brazil to Canada and I had to buy everything new for my new home. That’s a great opportunity and a lot of people would “die” to do that, but I din’t know where the good stuff were and now most of my house is Ikea made. I don’t regret it, actually after checking other furniture places (although too late to buy big furniture, but like you, I love window shopping) I think I would still have stick with my Ikea stuff they have a more modern look and the price is very inviting :) Thank you for your blog.
Rebecca says
I love that map pillow. Also, pretty reasonably priced at $12.99 :)
Andrea says
Man, I love IKEA. I recently got the Malin blad duvets for our bedroom and painted a headboard (the room is just wide enough for our bed and a bit of space around it) in a color called curacao. I adore it. I purchased these pillows http://www.ikea.com/de/de/catalog/products/10224976/
in Vienna and they match the covers perfectly.
I also got two yards of the malin fabric (the one on the left) and curtains made from the right fabric. It’s got artichokes on it and had me at hello, just like the chair had you.
Jeff Patterson says
Thanks for the great updates from IKEA.
That last wooden chair looks awesome. Let us all know what you buy!!
IKEA is like Home Depot-way too addictive.
Wrenaria says
Oooh I like those Storsele chairs!
I have those leafy green curtains you’re coveting in my home office. The make the room super happy and I’ve never regretted getting them. They are called Stockholm Blad and here’s the Ikea website link to them:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70174983/#/90112017
I love them so much I wish I could get the brown versions for my work office too but they are too short for that space. Sad.

I’ve searched and searched the IKEA site and can’t find the white cabinet behind the Storsele chair. Any clues? It could be some cabinetry they cobbled together but I’m stumped.
We are going on Saturday to the Charlotte store and it’s such a treat. I have to purposefully wear uncomfortable shoes so we won’t stay all day! Even my husband gets into IKEA!

We have the map pillow in our surf/tiki/ship inspired living room. Brings a little old world into a mostly mid-mod design.

Hi I’ve been reading you for a while and I just love how fun you are! I think the table you posted is a Störnas, looks a lot like a Bjursta but the difference is thta Störnas is made with solid pine and birch.

This is totally unrelated, sorta, but you know how you like to do lots of research on products before you buy them? I’m thinking back to a week ago or so when you did the post on registries…for cookware and such, where do you usually look up reviews that are reliable? We need to update our cookware and a few other things (registries donts, unfortunately, live and learn) and I was wondering where to look things up? Do you just look at normal reviews like O.co and Amazon? Thanks friends!
YoungHouseLove says
Yes, we try to read reviews on those places, ask our friends what they think, and even just google the product to see what online info comes up!
