“Would love to see another post about your favourite finds at Target. They’re coming to Canada and I’m so giddy I could piddle! Love your blog!” – Jaye
It’s been way too long since our last window shopping adventure (10 months?!?!), so to everyone who has been requesting them (especially if you used the word piddle), we’re psyched to share the goods. For those who remember these things, we just stroll around a store (we’ve done big chains, small local shops, and even random little stores that we find while road tripping) and take photos of all of the things we love. Not for compensation or anything – these sprees are just for fun. So let’s all go skipping through Target together, shall we? First there were these giant blue glass lamps for $49 that we thought were pretty awesome.
And you know we love bees/hives, so these hex vases for $6.99 caught our eye.
There was a bit of an Americana theme going on, with lots of red and white rugs, pillows, and clean-lined side tables in that area with all the featured home accents. The side tables were on sale but I forget what the price was (tried looking them up online but no dice). Hopefully they’re still in the store if you feel like dropping in on them.
Speaking of Americana, this cool blue-stained wood mirror (for $19.99) could be really cool in a frame arrangement or a wall full of mixed and matched mirrors.
At $79.99 these Privet House poufs weren’t super cheap, but they were pretty darn cute (especially the coral one). They felt very West Elm/CB2 to us.
You know me and ceramic animals. We’re like this (picture me crossing my fingers and my eyes). Ever since I spotted this yellow cow creamer here, I’ve been smitten. He’s meant for serving cream with coffee, but wouldn’t he look cute with a small bunch of flowers? $4.99 cow vase, anyone?
These deep coral geometric glasses (for $3.49 and $3.99) were pretty cute.
They also had them in green with a different geometric pattern (same prices):
These babies were $5.49 and $5.99. They’d look pretty charming in a room with some of the red, white, and blue stuff above. There’s something really “lobster-bake chic” about them. Haha.
This sweet little utensil basket would come in handy for carrying stuff out for dinner alfresco once we have our deck built. I think it was $9.99 (and it also came in blue). Didn’t grab it, but I might go back for it as a reward for surviving the big deck-build in a month or two (assuming we do, haha).
These navy striped sheets felt like they could work in a dorm or a fancy Thom Filicia design. I love stuff with range like that. And I think a twin set was $20 and a queen set was $29 and a king set was $39 for anyone wondering.
These lamp shades could spice up a room for $19.99. I love the idea of someone shaking things up in a neutral room by just swapping out a white shade or two for one of these babies.
I guess I was subliminally on sort of a coral kick, huh? Anyway, I thought this quilt was interesting and sophisticated – sort of Thomas O’ Brien or Nate Berkus-ish thanks to the detailed almost-tribal feeling. I can picture it with a deep gray headboard and some navy accents in the room to keep it from skewing too “lady-palace.”
Oh and this gradated serving tray was fun.
I wanted this $12.99 pillow. John had to physically restrain me verbally restrain me by pointing out I have a severe pillow surplus already. But let the record state that this guy would have come home with me if John hadn’t talked me out of it.
These runners were $17.99 (I would bet they’ll go on sale at some point though) and would be a cute way to wake up a table with basic white plates and glassware.
These $29 full sheet sets (and $39 queen ones) were so cute for spring/summer. They made me want to be one of those people who switches out our bedding for the season. In the end I have just one set of sheets for each bed in our house, but at least it keeps things simple (and you know we’re minimalists when it comes to storing things from our tiny-apartmented days in NYC).
These doormats look a little lackluster in this picture, but I loved them so much. They were soft but made from indoor/outdoor material, so we actually grabbed a few of the green ones for the patio/sunroom to replace some old bedraggled jute ones from Ikea. They were $12 each I think, and so far we really love them (even after a rain/muddy feet, they look bright and happy).
This rug was awesome. I think it was 5 x 8′ and $126, and it had the coolest orange trim, which you can kind of see peeking out of the edge. It felt very West Elm to us. It would be awesome in a little boy’s room or a living room alike.
These glass soap pumps and bathroom items were charming in that “old apothecary” way.
These soft pink ones were my favorite:
I also loved the detailing on these tribal-ish white ones (they also reminded me of something Nate-Berkus-ish in their worldly sort of look):
Mmmm, gummy fried eggs from The Candy Store. Yes, please! If Clara decides to have an egg party next year I’ll have to hunt these down. Haha.
Two items that look cute in a garden, baskets and rain boots:
These all natural dog treats from Polka Dog Bakery were adorable.
And I loved their dog toys and colorful bowls too. Too bad this ice cream sandwhich toy was a bit too big for Burger to handle. Haha.
Oh but there is one thing we bought at Target a little while ago that we forgot to tell you about. But you might have seen it in Clara’s party pics:
See that toy storage bin next to those chairs we brought out? It’s packed with footballs and soccer balls and toy trucks and a lot of rock-box items that don’t fit in the rock box when the cover is down. So convenient! And it was on sale for $54 (down from $65) and we got another 5% off for using our Target card.
We’ve heard from a few folks that the lid can drop down on kiddo fingers (there’s no slow-closing function or anything), but since Clara plays in the fenced off patio area and we have this guy in the carport, we grab things for her and bring them over to the patio to play. So she won’t be going in and out of this bin unassisted until she’s a lot bigger. So far we really like how it’s working out.
So there you have a whole lotta Target stuff for everyone who has been requesting a Window Shopping excursion. And it’s so exciting that Tar-jay is finally coming to Canada. Have fun up there, guys! Haha. Tell me what you get!

I am DROOLING over these Target posts. I miss that popcorn-smelling, possibility filled air. We are currently stationed in S. Korea~ ZERO Targets here, and I miss them! Seems lame to think that, because we are living in an awesome foreign country, but sometimes you miss those Americana comforts such as shopping through the bullseye. Thanks for giving me a taste of Target today!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw, you’re welcome! I’m sure Target misses you too! Haha.

We were this.close to buying those lamp shades at Target last week. Instead we went with the bold yellow base sold there and white shade. This reminds me, I really should send you our living room as a reader redesign :)

I bought those beautiful lamps about 2 weeks ago. It was love at first sight but not I could’t afford the 59.99 price tag for two. I waited and checked back every time I went to Target. (which is about 3 times a week, I know I have a problem.) I ended up buying them for $14.99 a piece! I was sooo excited!

SO awesome!

Oh, yeah. I bought that yellow pillow a few weeks ago. It was one of those purchases that went like this: See item. See price. Put in cart. Don’t look back.

A yellow dairy cow has wondered into my kitchen! It was kinda interesting though I noticed a varition in yellows through out that series (at least at my local Target store) so my cow is a little lighter. Hurray for Target and Hurray for Young House Love!

So funny! Each cow is like a snowflake- a little unique! Haha.

I’ve been counting down for Target’s grand opening in Canada. I also love that soft pink soap pump, and went through hoops to get my buddy in the States to get me the blue ones. I seriously can’t wait for Target stores to open in my neighborhood! Can’t resist the styles at the price tags!
Chrissy Henry says
I hope you picked up those blue lamps, they are amazing and perhaps a perfect addition to your bedroom?
YoungHouseLove says
We actually thought about it but thought it might be too much teal (in the rugs and the lamps and on the walls in a lighter tone might be too much).

Another canuck here waiting for Target to open up here! Was looking for that coral quilt you showed on their website, but came up empty. Wondering if you happen to remember the name of it? Loved the lamps too!!!! Love your site!

It does not look coral at all online that is probably why you could not find it. But I believe it is called the “Target Home Persian Fan Quilt”… I drooled over it at my local target for a while the other day ;)

The ceramic moo-cow is what I most want from this selection. Love the bright color.
As a side note, I’ve been pretty happy with the jersey sheets from Target (they pill a bit with use, but are comfy), but the other less expensive styles can be a bit scratchy.

Good to know Christine!

I’m loving so many of your Target finds too! In fact, we picked up two of the large blue lamps a few months back (http://www.diynewbies.com/colors-are-spring-ing-up-all-over/) and just love them. Such a fun place to shop, it’s hard to hold back on filling the cart. :)

I go on and on about not having an Ikea store within close driving distance, but no Target?! I’ll just be grateful for what I have! Meanwhile, congrats to Canadians who are getting access to Target– now you, too, can somehow manage to spend $50 before you even walk in the store, just like your American counterparts! ;)
p.s. At some point, I think most kiddos will manage to pinch fingers in the deck box, but the good news is, it probably won’t happen more than once!

I totally thought of YHL when I saw that creamer and the other red, mustard yellow, and blue ceramics at Tarjay. They have a lot of great decor right now!
Oh, and Fishs Eddy carries a cow creamer in emerald green. I happened across it a few weeks ago. It may have come home with me.

Ok, two things:
1. I have that blue lamp and it completes me.
2. This is a totally random question: where do you store all of your photos? I use blogger and am starting to run out of space, but when I delete them from Picasa they are gone from the blog as well. Do you have that issue? Just wondering!
Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
We actually use amazon.cloud, which is crazy expensive, but allows us to host all of our images (and keeps them loading fast so we don’t crash). Since we have 2,000+ posts full of pics, it was just something we had to do when we got to be a certain size. Maybe try flickr? They have an upgraded unlimited account for around $40 or so that might work for you!

Target is one of my go to places when I need a pick-me-up look for a room – for less. Even though I get wholesale as a designer, I can’t beat the prices that Target or some of the other Home-type discount places get.
Just adding those yellow ceramic cows to a breakfast table can make me smile! My aunt had a white one – and it’s something I always wanted as a kid…and never got. I have got to get me some of that cow happiness. I’m headed to Target!!!

I couldn’t believe you showed the gummy eggs! I bought a jar last time we were in Pittsburgh visiting our girls. They were too cute to pass up.

Love Target! Beware of the second soap pumps that you mentioned. I bought those a couple of years back and they stopped working after a month. When I checked the website, I noticed a lot of angry customers. They corrode, and I guess Target won’t stop selling them. It’s a shame. They are so darn cute.
YoungHouseLove says
Really? We have had the clear glass ones for 3+ years in all of our bathrooms and our kitchen and they haven’t corroded or gotten clogged – but I have heard others have had issues with that! We use Dr Bronner’s soap, which is meant to be watered down, so I do 1 part water and 1 part Dr Bronner’s in all of our dispensers and years later they’re going strong!

Ah Target – I always run in there for 1 thing and end up with a basket full. Every trip that should only be about $25 turns quickly into a $100+ trip. Crazy but I love that place. I went in there today and picked up a huge basket to hold my daughters toys for a steal at $24. It has a cute little black board attached to it :) Looks pretty good in my living room. And there aren’t toys strewn all over the room anymore. I will probably be making a trip there later in the week to pick up some stuff to finish up our bedroom which needs a makeover. I’m in love with those big glass lamps that remind me of the ones at the Marriott we stayed at here in Boston over our honeymoon. I want to get matching ones for our bedroom. Gotta love Target!

I have that serving tray!! We actually use it on our upholstered living room ottoman (http://www.crateandbarrel.com/furniture/ottomans-cubes/lounge-storage-ottoman-with-casters/s163158) because of the low sides (unlike other ottoman trays). Ooooh Sherry… Sometimes I think if we lived near one another, we would be such good friends!
About that cute yellow pillow: I DID buy that pillow and then brought it home only to set it out and realize I had just crossed the fine line between pillow haven and pillow hoarding. Upon prompting from my own husband, I returned the pillow – sad but having a better understanding of my own personal throw pillow threshold. Anyway, I’m glad to see you saw it’s potential too!

I love these posts! So excited to see another one! I also drool over the posts where you go to thrift/antique stores! I like hearing how you would use or repurpose something. Opens my mind to how to use things around the house that I wouldn’t have thought of before! Now I go to thrift stores with anticipation of finding something to use in a different way. Yeah!
CJ says
Ok this is random, but it’s how my mind works! And hope I didn’t miss the chat thread!
So I also have the blue glass soap pump but just for decoration in our half bath, which has a sea glass color theme (even found an awesome bubbly glass knob at Anthropologie for our mirror- one of my favorite things in the room! Haha). That room went through major DIY reno- all by my hubby! My question is, what to hang above the toilet? It is a narrow tiny closet sized space. Any ideas? I have a small ledge shelf there now but am too afraid that anything i place up there could potentially take a nasty plunge into unsafe waters! Lol! so for now i have a bunch of old shells up there collecting dust. I am going for a vintage/seaside look ( like weathered metal and glass bottles). Thanks so much and love your blog!!!!
PS ….I got married in Oct and we had lots of DIY aspects to keep it real and affordable, and have to say that you guys inspired me so much!!! (Wanted my chihuahua to be ring bearer but that idea was rejected- hey at least i tried!!!)
YoungHouseLove says
Hmm, I would find a small blue or green glass vase and sit it up there on the ledge and then hang a small picture on the wall (so it can’t tip off the ledge if it’s just leaning) to add more color. Maybe a beachy scene or a palm leaf or a sand dollar or starfish design could work?

I love Target and I loved those blue lamps so much, alas the $50 price tag times 2 and the $20 price tag for the gorgeous lamp shades times 2 was a budget buster at $140 for the pair :( I did however leave with a 4 pack of the napkins in the same pattern as the runners you showed and made two beautiful pillows for my couch (so glad I had Sue the Pillow/Napkin inspiration in my mind, haha). You can’t beat $10 for 2 pillow covers though.

Will def have to keep these items in mind as we move from a 2 BR 700 sq. foot home to a 3 BR 1100 sq. foot home in July! This helps with the “What do we put in all the space?” question! Although, part of me wants to say, “Nothing!”
PennySmith says
Ok, in my reading-to-catch-up (since I only just found ya like a month ago) I thought I read that when you got the house you were credited to enclose the carport… Did you post about that? Plan to do it? Or use it for something else? Just curious since you sounded convinced you didn’t like carports. (and you have no idea how it pains me to care about such things? Why do I feel so starker-ish? Lol!)
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, we are huge believers in waiting to do big renos until you’re 100% sure what you want (like how we waited a year to do the kitchen) so it’s still something we’re thinking through a lot – just since we want to make the right choices with doors/windows and all those big decisions when you’re adding major architectural elements to the house!

julianna says
Sherry, have you checked the code re: carports vs. garages? Some friends of ours in northern Virginia wanted to convert their carport, but found that garage floors were required to be much lower than carport floors (so the exhaust fumes would be less likely to drift into the house). In their case, they would have had to rip out the old carport, dig much deeper, pour a new foundation, etc. — basically way more expensive than just enclosing the existing carport. Hopefully your carport’s low enough that it wouldn’t be an issue for you.
YoungHouseLove says
We had a very experienced contractor come over before we put an offer on the house to tell us how much the conversion would be (so we could ask for a credit in that amount) and thankfully we wouldn’t have to lower ours (you have to walk up four steps to get into the kitchen, so the carport is a good deal lower than the interior floors of our house). We believe it was going to be a garage and at the last minute they left it open (since it even has a brick half-wall in the back, build in beams on the side, etc- in other words it’s a lot more finished than a lot of carports. So thankful!

What a great post. I love how you have taken us for a stroll through the store, and given us suggestions on where something would look good, or what else an item could be used for. For me, this is especially useful, as I sometimes have a hard time thinking outside the box and absolutely LOVE how you pull things together.
Thanx bunches and I look forward to the next window shopping/suggestion trip. Have you guys ever gone into an antique store, or better yet,a second hand type store and taken pictures with ideas attached to them?
have a terrific day!!

We fell in love with that soft pink soap dispenser, too…as in, my husband loved it so much, he was even willing to have a *pink* one! Until we saw the blue one, LOL. We have it next to the kitchen sink, filled with Dr. Bronner’s, and discovered (messily) last week that when the nozzle gets plugged, it becomes an ATTACK DISPENSER, which will shoot you dead on the stomach with soap at the slightest touch. LOL.
We’re careful to keep it cleaned out now!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh I have the trick! Dr Bronner’s is supposed to be watered down (says it on the bottle and everything) so I do 1 part water and 1 part Dr Bronner’s in my glass dispenser from Target (we have clear ones in every bathroom) and it doesn’t get clogged! Hope it helps!

Do you folks have an Ollie’s down by you? It’s basically a Big Lots on steroids. We found a 5×7 shag area rug (with the exact colors I wanted) for $50. Yay!
We have two sets of sheets for every bed in the house and a set for our air mattress when we go camping (we’re not quite glampers, but I’m slowly convincing Garry that’s the way to go). That way we can just take the dirty sheets off and put the clean ones on right away.
